RESUMEN
Members of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) are the primary cause of Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat, and frequently contaminate grain with trichothecene mycotoxins that pose a serious threat to food safety and animal health. The species identity and trichothecene toxin potential of 151 FGSC isolates collected from wheat in Uruguay were determined via multilocus genotyping. Although F. graminearum with the 15ADON trichothecene type accounted for 86% of the isolates examined, five different FGSC species and all three trichothecene types were identified in this collection. This is the first report of Fusarium asiaticum, Fusarium brasilicum, Fusarium cortaderiae, and Fusarium austroamericanum from Uruguay. In addition, we observed significant (P<0.001) regional differences in the composition of FGSC species and trichothecene types within Uruguay. Isolates of F. graminearum with the 15ADON type were the most prevalent in western provinces (95%), while F. asiaticum (43%) and the NIV type (61%) predominated in the new wheat production zone in Cerro Largo along Uruguay's eastern border with Brazil. F. graminearum isolates (15ADON type) were significantly (P<0.005) more aggressive on wheat than were isolates from the other species examined (NIV or 3ADON types). However, F. graminearum isolates (15ADON type) were significantly (P<0.05) more sensitive to tebuconazole than isolates from other species (NIV type). These results document substantial heterogeneity among the pathogens responsible for FHB in Uruguay. In addition, the regional predominance of the NIV trichothecene type is of significant concern to food safety and indicates that additional monitoring of nivalenol levels in grain may be required.

Adducts of a number of tertiary pnicogen ligands ER(3) (triphenyl-phosphine and -arsine (PPh(3),AsPh(3)), diphenyl,2-pyridylphosphine (PPh(2)py), tris(4-fluorophenyl)phosphine (P(C(6)H(4)-4F)(3)), tris(2-tolyl)phosphine (P(o-tol)(3)), tris(cyclohexyl)phosphine (PCy(3))), with silver(I) thiocyanate, AgSCN are structurally and spectroscopically characterized. The 1:3 AgSCN : ER(3) complexes structurally defined (for PPh(3),AsPh(3) (diversely solvated)) take the form [(R(3)E)(3)AgX], the thiocyanate X = NCS being N-bound, thus [(Ph(3)E)Ag(NCS)]. A 1:2 complex with PPh(2)py, takes the binuclear form [(pyPh(2)P)(2)Ag()Ag(PPh(2)py)(2)] with an eight-membered cyclic core. 1:1 complexes are defined with PPh(2)py, P(o-tol)(3) and PCy(3); binuclear forms [(R(3)P)Ag()Ag(PR(3))] are obtained with P(o-tol)(3) (two polymorphs), while novel isomeric tetranuclear forms, which may be envisaged as dimers of dimers, are obtained with PPh(2)py, and, as further polymorphs, with PCy(3); these latter may be considered as extensions of the 'cubane' and 'step' forms previously described for [(R(3)E)AgX](4) (X = halide) complexes. Solvent-assisted mechanochemical or solvent-assisted solid-state synthesis methods were employed in some cases, where complexes could not be obtained by conventional solution methods, or where such methods yielded a mixture of polymorphs unsuitable for solid-state spectroscopy. The wavenumbers of the ν(CN) bands in the IR spectra are in broad agreement with the empirical rule that distinguishes bridging from terminal bonding, but exceptions occur for compounds that have a double SCN bridged dimeric structure, and replacement of PPh(3) with PPh(2)py apparently causes a significant decrease in ν(CN) to well below the range expected for bridging SCN in these structures. (31)P CP MAS NMR spectra yield additional parameters that allow a correlation between the structures and spectra.

Members of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (Fg complex) are the causal agents of ear rot in maize and Fusarium head blight of wheat and other small grain cereals. The potential of these pathogens to contaminate cereals with trichothecene mycotoxins is a health risk for both humans and animals. A survey of ear rot isolates from maize collected in northwest Argentina recovered 66 isolates belonging to the Fg complex. A multilocus genotyping (MLGT) assay for determination of Fg complex species and trichothecene chemotypes was used to identify 56 of these isolates as F. meridionale and 10 isolates as F. boothii. F. meridionale was fixed for the nivalenol (NIV) chemotype, and all of the F. boothii isolates had the 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15ADON) chemotype. The results of genetic diversity analysis based on nine variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) loci supported the hypothesis of genetic isolation between F. meridionale and F. boothii, and provided little evidence of geographic substructure among populations of the dominant pathogen species, F. meridionale. This is the first study to indicate that F. meridionale and F. boothii may play a substantial role in the infection and trichothecene contamination of maize in Argentina. In addition, dominance of the NIV chemotype among Fg complex isolates from Argentina is unprecedented, and of significant concern to food safety and animal production.

OBJECTIVE: To validate the Zung depression scale in a Jamaican population in order to incorporate its use in primary health care facilities. METHODS: The Zung depression scale is a 20-item questionnaire used in the evaluation and detection of depression in individuals. Four mental health officers administered the scale to a cohort of 584 persons at the Maxfield Park Health Centre. RESULTS: Approximately 17 percent of the sample fell in the category of moderate depression and 5 percent in the category of severe depression. These results are consistent with other international studies. Wide variations were seen in the age bands designated adolescent, young adult, adult and elderly. The results showed good internal consistency with Cronbach of 0.813. Factor analysis using principle component analysis and varimax rotation identified three factors: positive outlook, physical activity and psychological symptoms. CONCLUSION: Overall, items were highly predictive of depression. (AU)

AIMS: This paper sets out to evaluate the possibility that smoking cessation interventions which make use of current psychological theories and constructs can be more successful than programmes based largely on nicotine replacement therapy and will be more satisfying to participants. RATIONALE: Nicotine replacement therapy is currently the most widely used method for helping smokers give up the habit. Numerous studies have shown this to be a successful approach for many smokers, but the majority still fail to benefit. Typically three quarters of smokers given nicotine replacement are smoking again one year later. This study investigates whether nicotine replacement can be enhanced by the addition of psychological techniques. DESIGN: Smokers recruited via publicity in the local media were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions. The first condition consisted of a series of group sessions in which volunteers were instructed in nicotine replacement, and a number of psychological techniques, the most important being cognitive counter conditioning. The second condition was identical to the first but without the cognitive counter conditioning. Finally background quit rate was determined using waiting list controls. RESULTS: Both interventions were successful in helping smokers quit the habit, based upon an analysis at 6 months, compared with waiting list controls. The experimental condition incorporating cognitive counter conditioning produced a much higher quit rate than the condition based largely upon nicotine replacement, although the difference was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: This study is highly suggestive that nicotine replacement therapy can be enhanced by the inclusion of psychological techniques in group work, resulting in abstention rates higher than nicotine replacement alone and increasing participant satisfaction. Further work is needed with larger numbers to verify that this is indeed a significant gain and to investigate whether psychological techniques can give longer term benefits.

To determine risk factors for HIV-1 among drug injectors in Rio de Janeiro, where cocaine is the dominant drug of injection, subjects were recruited using the criteria and interview instrument of the World Health Organization's Cross-National Study of HIV infection and risk behaviour in injecting drug users. HIV antibody test results were derived both from serum tests and from self-reports of previous tests (documented evidence of self-reported seropositivity was required). The analytical sample consists of 123 subjects, recruited both at drug abuse treatment sites and at street locations. Of 27 subjects with both serological and self-reported antibody status data, 20 reported previous negative tests; of these three had positive sera and may have seroconverted. Seven subjects reporting prior positive serostatus all tested positive. For the 123 subjects, seroprevalence was 34%. Independent significant risk factors in multivariate logistic regression with backwards elimination are: years of injection greater than 5; being a male who has had sex with men in the previous 5 years; and not having taken deliberate steps to protect oneself against AIDS. These findings indicate that homosexual/bisexual male drug injectors may be a bridge group through which HIV is entering drug-injecting networks in Rio de Janeiro. Efforts by drug injectors to reduce their risk of infection seem to have protective effects. This underscores the importance of HIV prevention efforts aimed at drug injectors.
