RESUMEN

The maturity of fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes significantly impacts indicators of their quality, such as taste, nutritional value, and shelf life, making maturity determination vital in agricultural production and the food processing industry. Tomatoes mature from the inside out, leading to an uneven ripening process inside and outside, and these situations make it very challenging to judge their maturity with the help of a single modality. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-assisted multimodal data fusion technique combining color imaging, spectroscopy, and haptic sensing for the maturity assessment of tomatoes. The method uses feature fusion to integrate feature information from images, near-infrared spectra, and haptic modalities into a unified feature set and then classifies the maturity of tomatoes through deep learning. Each modality independently extracts features, capturing the tomatoes' exterior color from color images, internal and surface spectral features linked to chemical compositions in the visible and near-infrared spectra (350 nm to 1100 nm), and physical firmness using haptic sensing. By combining preprocessed and extracted features from multiple modalities, data fusion creates a comprehensive representation of information from all three modalities using an eigenvector in an eigenspace suitable for tomato maturity assessment. Then, a fully connected neural network is constructed to process these fused data. This neural network model achieves 99.4% accuracy in tomato maturity classification, surpassing single-modal methods (color imaging: 94.2%; spectroscopy: 87.8%; haptics: 87.2%). For internal and external maturity unevenness, the classification accuracy reaches 94.4%, demonstrating effective results. A comparative analysis of performance between multimodal fusion and single-modal methods validates the stability and applicability of the multimodal fusion technique. These findings demonstrate the key benefits of multimodal fusion in terms of improving the accuracy of tomato ripening classification and provide a strong theoretical and practical basis for applying multimodal fusion technology to classify the quality and maturity of other fruits and vegetables. Utilizing deep learning (a fully connected neural network) for processing multimodal data provides a new and efficient non-destructive approach for the massive classification of agricultural and food products.

RESUMEN

Aspergillus flavus and its toxic metabolites-aflatoxins infect and contaminate maize kernels, posing a threat to grain safety and human health. Due to the complexity of microbial growth and metabolic processes, dynamic mechanisms among fungal growth, nutrient depletion of maize kernels and aflatoxin production is still unclear. In this study, visible/near infrared (Vis/NIR) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with the scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to elucidate the critical organismal interaction at kernel (macro-) and microscopic levels. As kernel damage is the main entrance for fungal invasion, maize kernels with gradually aggravated damages from intact to pierced to halved kernels with A. flavus were cultured for 0-120 h. The spectral fingerprints of the A. flavus-maize kernel complex over time were analyzed with principal components analysis (PCA) of hyperspectral images, where the pseudo-color score maps and the loading plots of the first three PCs were used to investigate the dynamic process of fungal infection and to capture the subtle changes in the complex with different hardness of the maize matrix. The dynamic growth process of A. flavus and the interactions of fungus-maize complexes were explained on a microscopic level using SEM. Specifically, fungus morphology, e.g., hyphae, conidia, and conidiophore (stipe) was accurately captured on the microscopic level, and the interaction process between A. flavus and nutrient loss from the maize kernel tissues (i.e., embryo, and endosperm) was described. Furthermore, the growth stage discrimination models based on PLSDA with the results of CCRC = 100 %, CCRV = 97 %, CCRIV = 93 %, and the prediction models of AFB1 based on PLSR with satisfactory performance (R2C = 0.96, R2V = 0.95, R2IV = 0.93 and RPD = 3.58) were both achieved. In conclusion, the results from both macro-level (Vis/NIR-HSI) and micro-level (SEM) assessments revealed the dynamic organismal interactions in A. flavus-maize kernel complex, and the detailed data could be used for modeling, and quantitative prediction of aflatoxin, which would establish a theoretical foundation for the early detection of fungal or toxin contaminated grains to ensure food security.

RESUMEN

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are global pollutants with emerging concerns. Methods to predict and screen their toxicity are crucial. Elemental dyshomeostasis can be used to assess toxicity of environmental pollutants. Non-targeted metallomics, combining synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SRXRF) and machine learning, has successfully differentiated cancer patients from healthy individuals. The whole idea of this work is to screen the phytotoxicity of nano polyethylene terephthalate (nPET) and micro polyethylene terephthalate (mPET) through non-targeted metallomics with SRXRF and deep learning algorithms. Firstly, Seed germination, seedling growth, photosynthetic changes, and antioxidant activity were used to evaluate the toxicity of mPET and nPET. It was showed that nPET, at 10 mg/L, was more toxic to rice seedlings, inhibiting growth and impairing chlorophyll content, MDA content, and SOD activity compared to mPET. Then, rice seedling leaves exposed to nPET or mPET was examined with SRXRF, and the SRXRF data was differentiated with deep learning algorithms. It was showed that the one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) model achieved 98.99% accuracy without data preprocessing in screening mPET and nPET exposure. In all, non-targeted metallomics with SRXRF and 1D-CNN can effectively screen the exposure and phytotoxicity of nPET/mPET and potentially other emerging pollutants. Further research is needed to assess the phytotoxicity of different types of MPs/NPs using non-targeted metallomics.

RESUMEN

Depression has long been considered a disease involving immune hyperactivation. The impact of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-8 on depression has been widely studied. However, the effect of IL-33, another pro-inflammatory cytokine, has been less researched. Currently, research on the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk is inconsistent. In response to these divergent results, we conducted a review and meta-analysis aimed at resolving published research on the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk, and understanding the potential role of IL-33 in the development and treatment of depression. After searching different databases, we analyzed 8 studies. Our meta-analysis showed that IL-33 had a positive correlation with reduced risk of depression. The pooled standard mean differences (SMD) = 0.14, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.05-0.24. Subgroup analysis results showed that IL-33 and ST2 levels in cerebrospinal fluid and serum is positive correlated with reduced risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). According to the characteristics of the included literature, the results mainly focuses on Caucasian. Furthermore, according to the subgroup analysis of depression-related data sources for disease or treatment, the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk is reflected throughout the entire process of depression development and treatment. Therefore, the change of IL-33 level in serum and cerebrospinal fluid can serve as useful indicators for assessing the risk of depression, and the biomarker provides potential treatment strategies for reducing the burden of the disease.

RESUMEN

Interleukin 17 (IL-17) is an inflammatory cytokine with multiple roles in immune protection, immunopathology, and inflammation-related tumors. Lung cancer is inflammation-related cancer, and a large number of studies have shown that IL-17 contributes to the metastasis and progression of lung cancer. However, some studies have shown that IL17 inhibits the occurrence of lung cancer. At present, there is still some controversy about the role of IL17 in the occurrence and development of lung cancer. This review introduces the basic characteristics of IL-17 and focuses on its role in lung cancer, in order to provide a certain theoretical basis for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: Background: Immunosuppression caused by immune cell apoptosis and an imbalance of T helper 2 cells (T H 2) and T helper 1 cells (T H 1), is associated with poor outcomes in septic patients. Esmolol was reported to improve survival by modulating immune responses in septic shock. Whether esmolol could alleviate sepsis-induced immunosuppression and the optimal dose are unclear. Methods: Four hours after cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), Wistar rats were randomized into CLP, CLP + E-5 (esmolol: 5 mg·kg -1 ·h -1 ) and CLP + E-18 (esmolol: 18 mg·kg -1 ·h -1 ) groups. Eight rats were underwent sham operation. Eighteen hours after CLP, hemodynamics and organ histological injuries were evaluated, peripheral blood mononuclear cells apoptosis and T-lymphocyte subsets counts were determined by flow cytometry, and the expression of p-Akt, Bcl-2, cleaved Caspase-3, and p-Erk1/2 in splenic CD4 + T-lymphocytes was determined by western blot and immunohistochemistry. ß 1 -Adrenoreceptor expressions were evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. Results: Cecal ligation and puncture induced tachycardia, hypotension, hyperlactatemia, and multiple organ injury. Heart rate was unchanged in the CLP + E-5 group but decreased in the CLP + E-18 group. Hypotension, lactatemia, and multiple organ injuries were improved only in the CLP + E-5 group. T-lymphocyte apoptosis and T H 2/T H 1 ratio was decreased in CLP + E-5 but not in CLP + E-18. p-Akt and Bcl-2 expressions were increased, while cleaved Caspase-3 and p-Erk1/2 expressions were decreased in CLP + E-5. ß 1 -Adrenoreceptor expressions were unchanged in both CLP + E-5 and CLP + E-18 groups. Conclusions: Low dose of esmolol reduced T-lymphocyte apoptosis and restored T H 2/T H 1 ratio in septic shock. Esmolol might modulate Akt/Bcl-2/Caspase-3 pathway to relieve T-lymphocyte apoptosis and inhibit Erk1/2 activity to decrease T H 0 differentiation to T H 2. Esmolol may be a potential immunoregulator of septic shock.

RESUMEN

Introduction: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a large number of critically ill and severe COVID-19 patients meet the diagnostic criteria for sepsis and even septic shock. The treatments for COVID-19 patients with sepsis are still very limited. For sepsis, improving ventilation is one of the main treatments. Nitric oxide (NO) and almitrine have been reported to improve oxygenation in patients with "classical" sepsis. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NO, almitrine, and the combination of both for COVID-19 (at the edge of sepsis) patients. Method: A systematic search was performed on Embase, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, Wanfang Data, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. Randomized clinical trials, cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, case series, and case reports in COVID-19 patients with suspected or confirmed sepsis were performed. Study characteristics, patient demographics, interventions, and outcomes were extracted from eligible articles. Results: A total of 35 studies representing 1,701 patients met eligibility criteria. Inhaled NO did not affect the mortality (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.33-2.8, I2 = 81%, very low certainty), hospital length of stay (SMD 0.62, 95% CI 0.04-1.17, I2 = 83%, very low certainty), and intubation needs (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.34-1.93, I2 = 56%, very low certainty) of patients with COVID-19 (at the edge of sepsis). Meanwhile, almitrine did not affect the mortality (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.17-1.13, low certainty), hospital length of stay (SMD 0.00, 95% CI -0.29-0.29, low certainty), intubation needs (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.5-1.79, low certainty), and SAEs (OR 1.16, 95% CI 0.63-2.15, low certainty). Compared with pre-administration, the PaO2/FiO2 of patients with NO (SMD-0.87, 95% CI -1.08-0.66, I2 = 0%, very low certainty), almitrine (SMD-0.73, 95% CI-1.06-0.4, I2 = 1%, very low certainty), and the combination of both (SMD-0.94, 95% CI-1.71-0.16, I2 = 47%, very low certainty) increased significantly. Conclusion: Inhaled NO, almitrine, and the combination of the two drugs improved oxygenation significantly, but did not affect the patients' mortality, hospitalization duration, and intubation needs. Almitrine did not significantly increase the patients' SAEs. Well-designed high-quality studies are needed for establishing a stronger quality of evidence. RESUMEN

The IL-33/ST2 axis is reported to be controversially associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). A systematic review of the association between the IL-33/ST2 axis and CAD revealed that IL-33/ST2 plays a protective role in CAD and serum sST2 and IL-33 levels are increased in patients with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the association of IL-33/ST2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with CAD prevalence, prognosis, and risk factors was assessed by performing a meta-analysis. Through a literature search of relevant articles in various databases using the relevant keywords, seven studies were included in the analysis. The meta-analysis showed that the IL-33/ST2 axis was associated with increased CAD risk [pooled odds ratio (OR) = 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13-1.20]. Gene subgroup analysis showed a close association of IL1RL1 (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.20-1.30; I 2 = 85.9%; p = 0.000) and IL1RAcP (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.26-1.60; I 2 = 27.1%; p = 0.203) with increased CAD risk. However, the association for the IL-33 gene was not statistically significant. SNPs rs7044343 (T), rs10435816 (G), rs11792633 (C) in IL-33 gene were associated with a protective effect in CAD. However, rs7025417 (T) in IL-33, rs11685424 (G) in IL1RL1, rs950880 (A) in sST2, and rs4624606 (A) in IL1RAcP were related to increased CAD risk. Overall, polymorphisms in IL-33/ST2 axis components were associated with increased CAD risk. These results may help identify key features of IL-33/ST2 immunobiology in CAD along with potential treatment strategies to lower disease burden.

RESUMEN

A 5 kHz sub-nanosecond master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser system was reported in this paper. The master oscillator was an electro-optically Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser directly pumped at 879 nm, yielding a pulse energy of 520 µJ and a pulse width of 900 ps at 5 kHz. With two Nd:YVO4 amplifiers directly pumped at 914 nm, the pulse energy was further scaled up. Under the absorbed pump energy of 11.0 mJ, the pulse energy was amplified to 4.2 mJ, corresponding to a peak power of 4.7 MW. The optical-to-optical efficiency of the amplifiers reached 33.5%.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The application of autopilot technology is conductive to achieving path planning navigation and liberating labor productivity. In addition, the self-driving vehicles can drive according to the growth state of crops to ensure the accuracy of spraying and pesticide effect. Navigation line detection is the core technology of self-driving technology, which plays a more important role in the development of Chinese intelligent agriculture. The general algorithms for seedling line extraction in the agricultural fields are for large seedling crops. At present, scholars focus more on how to reduce the impact of crop row adhesion on extraction of crop rows. However, for seedling crops, especially double-row sown seedling crops, the navigation lines cannot be extracted very effectively due to the lack of plants or the interference of rut marks caused by wheel pressure on seedlings. To solve these problems, this paper proposed an algorithm that combined edge detection and OTSU to determine the seedling column contours of two narrow rows for cotton crops sown in wide and narrow rows. Furthermore, the least squares were used to fit the navigation line where the gap between two narrow rows of cotton was located, which could be well adapted to missing seedlings and rutted print interference. RESULTS: The algorithm was developed using images of cotton at the seedling stage. Apart from that, the accuracy of route detection was tested under different lighting conditions and in maize and soybean at the seedling stage. According to the research results, the accuracy of the line of sight for seedling cotton was 99.2%, with an average processing time of 6.63 ms per frame; the accuracy of the line of sight for seedling corn was 98.1%, with an average processing time of 6.97 ms per frame; the accuracy of the line of sight for seedling soybean was 98.4%, with an average processing time of 6.72 ms per frame. In addition, the standard deviation of lateral deviation is 2 cm, and the standard deviation of heading deviation is 0.57 deg. CONCLUSION: The proposed rows detection algorithm could achieve state-of-the-art performance. Besides, this method could ensure the normal spraying speed by adapting to different shadow interference and the randomness of crop row growth. In terms of the applications, it could be used as a reference for the navigation line fitting of other growing crops in complex environments disturbed by shadow.

RESUMEN

Relaxor-lead titanate (PbTiO3) crystals, which exhibit extremely high piezoelectricity, are believed to possess high electro-optic (EO) coefficients. However, the optical transparency of relaxor-PbTiO3 crystals is severely reduced as a result of light scattering and reflection by domain walls, limiting electro-optic applications. Through synergistic design of a ferroelectric phase, crystal orientation, and poling technique, we successfully removed all light-scattering domain walls and achieved an extremely high transmittance of 99.6% in antireflection film-coated crystals, with an ultrahigh EO coefficient r33 of 900 picometers per volt (pm V-1), >30 times as high as that of conventionally used EO crystals. Using these crystals, we fabricated ultracompact EO Q-switches that require very low driving voltages, with superior performance to that of commercial Q-switches. Development of these materials is important for the portability and low driving voltage of EO devices.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) can improve ventilatory function in patients with acute COPD exacerbation. However, its effect on clinical outcomes remains uncertain. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was conducted from July 2017 to December 2020 in 16 tertiary hospitals in China. Patients with acute COPD exacerbation with mild hypercapnia (pH ≥ 7.35 and arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide > 45 mmHg) were randomly assigned to either HFNC or conventional oxygen therapy. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients who met the criteria for intubation during hospitalization. Secondary outcomes included treatment failure (intolerance and need for non-invasive or invasive ventilation), length of hospital stay, hospital cost, mortality, and readmission at day 90. RESULTS: Among 337 randomized patients (median age, 70.0 years; 280 men [83.1%]; median pH 7.399; arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide 51 mmHg), 330 completed the trial. 4/158 patients on HFNC and 1/172 patient on conventional oxygen therapy met the criteria for intubation (P = 0.198). Patients progressed to NPPV in both groups were comparable (15 [9.5%] in the HFNC group vs. 22 [12.8%] in the conventional oxygen therapy group; P = 0.343). Compared with conventional oxygen therapy, HFNC yielded a significantly longer median length of hospital stay (9.0 [interquartile range, 7.0-13.0] vs. 8.0 [interquartile range, 7.0-11.0] days) and a higher median hospital cost (approximately $2298 [interquartile range, $1613-$3782] vs. $2005 [interquartile range, $1439-$2968]). There were no significant differences in other secondary outcomes between groups. CONCLUSIONS: In this multi-center randomized controlled study, HFNC compared to conventional oxygen therapy did not reduce need for intubation among acute COPD exacerbation patients with mild hypercapnia. The future studies should focus on patients with acute COPD exacerbation with respiratory acidosis (pH < 7.35). However, because the primary outcome rate was well below expected, the study was underpowered to show a meaningful difference between the two treatment groups. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT03003559 . RESUMEN

Some studies suggest that a higher phytochemical index (PI) is associated with a lower risk of overweight/obesity. This meta-analysis is performed to summarize published studies on the relationship of PI and the risk of overweight/obesity. We searched on PubMed, Cochrane Library and Web of Science from the inception dates to February 2022. The random-effect model was used based on heterogeneity. Meta-regression was used to explore potential sources of between-study heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated using Begg's and Egger's tests. The dose-response relationship was assessed using a restricted cubic spline model. Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis, with a total of 100,753 participants. The meta-analysis showed that the phytochemical index was associated with a decreased risk of overweight/obesity. The pooled OR (95% CI) was 0.81 (0.74-0.90). The findings from dose-response analysis showed a nonlinear association between the phytochemical index and the risk of overweight/obesity. The results of the meta-regression showed that gender and area were significant covariates influencing the heterogeneity between studies. There was no publication bias in the meta-analysis of this study. In conclusion, although this meta-analysis indicates that a high phytochemical index is associated with a reduced risk of overweight/obesity, all the studies included in this meta-analysis were cross-sectional studies with high heterogeneity. As such, more data from randomized controlled trials are required to confirm the efficacy of PI in evaluating the risk of overweight/obesity.

RESUMEN

Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China in December 2019, it has been characterized as a pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO). It was reported that asymptomatic persons are potential sources of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. We present an outbreak among health-care workers incited by a doctor who cared a patient with COVID-19 in a Hospital in Wuhan, Hubei, China, which indicates existence of super-spreader even during incubation period.

RESUMEN

COVID-19 has been widely spreading. We aimed to examine adaptive immune cells in non-severe patients with persistent SARS-CoV-2 shedding. 37 non-severe patients with persistent SARS-CoV-2 presence that were transferred to Zhongnan hospital of Wuhan University were retrospectively recruited to the PP (persistently positive) group, which was further allocated to PPP group (n = 19) and PPN group (n = 18), according to their testing results after 7 days (N = negative). Epidemiological, demographic, clinical and laboratory data were collected and analyzed. Data from age- and sex-matched non-severe patients at disease onset (PA [positive on admission] patients, n = 37), and lymphocyte subpopulation measurements from matched 54 healthy subjects were extracted for comparison (HC). Compared with PA patients, PP patients had much improved laboratory findings. The absolute numbers of CD3+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, and NK cells were significantly higher in PP group than that in PA group, and were comparable to that in healthy controls. PPP subgroup had markedly reduced B cells and T cells compared to PPN group and healthy subjects. Finally, paired results of these lymphocyte subpopulations from 10 PPN patients demonstrated that the number of T cells and B cells significantly increased when the SARS-CoV-2 tests turned negative. Persistent SARS-CoV-2 presence in non-severe COVID-19 patients is associated with reduced numbers of adaptive immune cells. Monitoring lymphocyte subpopulations could be clinically meaningful in identifying fully recovered COVID-19 patients.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Allergen exposure induces aberrant T helper (Th) 2 immune responses in patients with allergic asthma, but not in sensitized asymptomatic and nonallergic subjects. Interleukin (IL)-35-induced regulatory T (iTr35) cells are a new subset of regulatory T cells with immunoregulatory properties. These cells can significantly suppress Th2 responses in seasonal allergic rhinitis. However, it remains unknown whether iTr35 cells are involved in the immunoregulation of allergic asthmatic individuals after specific allergen exposure. METHODS: The iTr35 cell frequency in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was measured in patients with allergic asthma as well as in asymptomatic and healthy subjects. The difference in naïve CD4⁺ T cell conversion to iTr35 cells in vitro during allergen stimulation was also investigated. The effects of iTr35 cells on naïve CD4⁺ T cell differentiation into Th2 cells, CD4⁺CD25- T (Teff) cell proliferation and Th2 cytokine production in vitro were assessed. RESULTS: Significantly reduced iTr35 cell frequencies and IL-35 expression levels were found in asthmatic patients with Derp1 allergy compared with asymptomatic and healthy subjects. Moreover, the circulating iTr35 cell proportion and IL-35 expression level in asthmatic patients gradually decreased with disease severity. Patients with allergic asthma had reduced transformation of naïve CD4⁺ T cells into iTr35 cells and IL-35 production after allergen exposure compared with asymptomatic and healthy subjects. Most importantly, iTr35 cells inhibited allergen-driven differentiation of naïve CD4⁺ T cells into Th2 cells, Teff cell proliferation and Th2 cytokine production in an IL-35-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study suggest that iTr35 cells may play an important role in preventing Th2 responses to allergens by secreting IL-35 and that iTr35 cells may be a potential new immune regulator of allergic asthma.

RESUMEN

From December 25, 2019 to January 31, 2020, 33 cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were identified in the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, China, yet none of the affiliated HCWs was infected. Here we analyzed the infection control measures used in three different departments in the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University and correlated the measures with the corresponding infection data of HCWs affiliated with these departments. We found that three infection control measures, namely the isolation of the presumed positive patients, the use of facemasks and intensified hand hygiene play important roles in preventing nosocomial transmission of COVID-19.

RESUMEN

In December 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged in Wuhan, China, and has spread globally. However, the transmission route of SARS-CoV-2 has not been fully understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate SARS-CoV-2 shedding in the excreta of COVID-19 patients. Electronical medical records, including demographics, clinical characteristics, laboratory and radiological findings of enrolled patients were extracted and analyzed. Pharyngeal swab, stool, and urine specimens were collected and tested for SARS-CoV-2 RNA by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Viral shedding at multiple time points in specimens was recorded, and its correlation analyzed with clinical manifestations and the severity of illness. A total of 42 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled, 8 (19.05%) of whom had gastrointestinal symptoms. A total of 28 (66.67%) patients tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA in stool specimens, and this was not associated with the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms and the severity of illness. Among them, 18 (64.29%) patients remained positive for viral RNA in the feces after the pharyngeal swabs turned negative. The duration of viral shedding from the feces after negative conversion in pharyngeal swabs was 7 (6-10) days, regardless of COVID-19 severity. The demographics, clinical characteristics, laboratory and radiologic findings did not differ between patients who tested positive and negative for SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the feces. Viral RNA was not detectable in urine specimens from 10 patients. Our results demonstrated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the feces of COVID-19 patients and suggested the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 transmission via the fecal-oral route.
