BACKGROUND: Presently, the majority of investigations primarily evaluate the correlation between triglyceride-glucose index (TyGI) with lung diseases, such as asthma. However, they did not delve into the correlation between TyGI and inflammatory responses related to the disease. Few studies have explored the association between TyGI and blood eosinophil count (BEOC). Thus, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data were used in this study to evaluate the correlation between TyGI and BEOC in individuals with asthma. METHODS: This study investigated 3902 individuals with asthma. Linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between TyGI and BEOC in patients with asthma. Subsequently, the GAM and threshold effect models were used to validate the presence of either a nonlinear or linear association between TyGI and BEOC. Finally, stratified analyses were conducted to ascertain the correlations between different subgroups. RESULTS: Four linear regression models confirmed a positive linear correlation between TyGI and BEOC in patients with asthma. In Model D, which controlled for all covariates, BEOC increased by 12.44 cells/uL for every extra unit of TyGI. The GAM and threshold effect models further verified the positive linear correlation between TyGI and BEOC. The XGBoost model indicated that the six most significant variables influencing BEOC, in order of relative importance, were age, cholesterol level, body mass index (BMI), poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), BNEUC, and TyGI. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with asthma, the study discovered a linear positive correlation between TyGI and BEOC. This indicates a potential connection between TyGI and alterations in the immune status of individuals with asthma, which may help detect abnormalities in a timely manner and provide a reference for clinical decision-making. This study offers fresh insights for the future exploration of the management and treatment of asthma.

Background: Increasing evidence emphasizes the potential relationship between diabetes and OAB (overactive bladder). However, large population epidemiology is still lacking. Methods: This cross-sectional study included six cycle NHANES surveys, with a total of 23863 participants. Logistic regression models were constructed to analyze the association between diabetes mellitus, diabetes-related markers, and inflammatory biomarkers with OAB. Restricted cubic splines were used to analyze the non-linear associations. Mediating analysis was performed to test the effect of inflammatory biomarkers on the relationship between diabetes-related markers and OAB. Finally, machine learning models were applied to predict the relative importance and construct the best-fit model. Results: Diabetes mellitus participants' OAB prevalence increased by 77% compared with non-diabetes. As the quartiles of diabetes-related markers increased, the odds of OAB monotonically increased in three models (all p for trend < 0.001). Glycohemoglobin exhibited a linear association with OAB (p for nonlinearity > 0.05). White blood cells significantly mediated the associations between diabetes-related markers (glycohemoglobin, fasting glucose, and insulin) with OAB, and the proportions were 7.23%, 8.08%, and 17.74%, respectively (all p < 0.0001). Neutrophils partly mediated the correlation between (glycohemoglobin, fasting glucose, and insulin) and OAB at 6.58%, 9.64%, and 17.93%, respectively (all p < 0.0001). Machine learning of the XGBoost model constructs the best fit model, and XGBoost predicts glycohemoglobin is the most important indicator on OAB. Conclusion: Our research revealed diabetes mellitus and diabetes-related markers were remarkably associated with OAB, and systemic inflammation was an important mediator of this association.

Introduction: Serological responses following hepatitis B vaccination are crucial for preventing hepatitis B (HBV). However, the potential relationship between serum lipid levels and immunity from HBV vaccination remains poorly understood. Methods: In this study, we conducted an analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data spanning from 2003 to 2016. Multivariable weighted logistic regression models, generalized linear analysis, stratified models, smooth curve fitting, segmentation effect analysis and sensitivity analysis were utilized to assess the relationships. Results: After adjusting for relevant covariates, we observed that low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) were independently linked to a significantly lower seroprotective rate. Compared to HDL levels of ≥ 60 mg/dL, the odds ratios (ORs) for individuals with borderline levels (40-59 mg/dL for men, 50-59 mg/dL for women) and low levels (< 40 mg/dL for men, < 50 mg/dL for women) were 0.83 (95% CI 0.69-0.99) and 0.65 (95% CI 0.56-0.78), respectively. This association was particularly pronounced in individuals aged 40 or older. Conversely, higher levels of the triglyceride to HDL (TG/HDL) ratio (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.84-0.98), total cholesterol to HDL (Chol/HDL) ratio (OR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.64-0.92), and low-density lipoprotein to HDL (LDL/HDL) ratio (OR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.76-0.96) were associated with a decreased likelihood of seroprotection. Conclusion: This study suggests that lipid levels may play a role in modulating the immune response following HBV vaccination.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate predictive factors for irreversible organ damage in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and establish a nomogram model. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with SSc who were treated at our hospital between March 2013 and March 2023. Irreversible organ damage included heart failure, respiratory failure, renal failure, and gangrene of the hands and feet. Cox and LASSO regression analyses were performed to determine the predictive factors. Based on the results, a nomogram model was developed. The model was evaluated using the C-indices, calibration plots, and DCA. RESULTS: A total of 361 patients with systemic sclerosis were randomly divided into the development (n = 181) and validation (n = 180) groups. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that age ≥65 years, weight loss, digital ulcers, mRSS ≥16, elevated creatinine, elevated myoglobin, elevated C-reactive protein, renal involvement, and cardiac involvement were independent risk factors. Based on the LASSO analysis, a nomogram model of irreversible organ damage was established. The C-indices of the development group at 24, 60, and 96 m were 96.7, 84.5, and 85.7, whereas those of the validation group at 24, 60, and 96 m were 86.6, 79.1, and 78.5, respectively. The results of the DCA showed that the nomogram can be used as a valuable tool to predict irreversible organ damage in patients with SSc. CONCLUSION: We included commonly used clinical indicators. According to the nomogram, the probability of irreversible organ damage can be calculated and high-risk patients can be identified.

BACKGROUND: The crosstalk between genomic alterations and metabolic dysregulation in bladder cancer is largely unknown. A deep understanding of the interactions between cancer drivers and cancer metabolic changes will provide novel opportunities for targeted therapeutic strategies. METHODS: Three primary bladder cancer specimens with paired normal tissues or blood samples were subjected to whole-exome sequencing, DNA methylation array and whole-transcriptome sequencing by next-generation sequencing technology. We applied the methods to multi-omics data combining the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) bladder cancer samples, including somatic mutation, DNA copy number, DNA methylation and gene expression profile for validation. RESULTS: We identified 34 mutated cancer driver genes in bladder cancer. KDM6A was the most significantly mutated cancer driver gene. Metabolic pathways were enriched in both differentially methylated regions (DMRs) and differentially expressed genes. Twenty-nine DMRs in the TSS200 region were highly correlated with the upregulation of gene expression, and 24 DMRs in the genome were highly correlated with the downregulation of gene expression. A total of 201 genes had highly correlated DNA methylation and expression. Thirty-four genes, including the known metabolic genes CXXC5, PRR5, ABCB8 and BAHD1, were further validated in the TCGA cohort. Multi-omics alterations identified two new candidate driver genes, WIPI2 and GFM2, that warrant future studies. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis, focusing on identifying key regulatory factors that may lead to cancer metabolic heterogeneity. Further understanding and verification of the cancer genes driving metabolic reprogramming and their role in the progression of bladder cancer will help to identify new therapeutic targets.

Simple ball milling technology can simultaneously improve the adsorption performance of adsorbents for heavy metals and organic pollutants and has attracted increasing attention. Iron-modified biochar (Fe@MBC) was prepared by one-step ball milling, and the characterization results proved that FeCl3 was successfully loaded on biochar. The removal rates of Cr(VI) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) by Fe@MBC were increased by 88.27% and 82.64% compared with BC. The average pore size, oxygen-containing functional groups and graphitization degree of Fe@MBC are higher than those of BC, which is more conducive to promoting adsorption. The adsorption isotherms show that the adsorption of Cr(VI) and TC on the Fe@MBC surface conforms to the Langmuir type of single-layer adsorption and the Freundlich model of multilayer adsorption, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cr(VI) and TC are 25.46 and 66.91 mg·g-1, respectively. Kinetic experiments show that the adsorption process is more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model of chemical adsorption. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) and TC on the Fe@MBC surface is a spontaneous endothermic process that becomes more obvious as the temperature increases. The increase in solution pH has a significant impact on the removal rate of Fe@MBC. When the pH value increased from 3 to 11, the adsorption rates decreased by 53.74% and 17.16%, respectively. The presence of PO43-, CO32-, K+, and Cu2+ significantly affects the adsorption of TC by Fe@MBC, and PO43- and CO32- also affect the adsorption of Cr(VI). Mechanistic studies show that ion exchange, electrostatic interaction, pore filling, and hydrogen bonding contribute to the removal of Cr(VI) and TC by Fe@MBC. The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) also involves complexation and redox reactions, and the removal mechanism of TC involves π-π bonds and van der Waals forces. The results show that Fe@MBC is a green and efficient adsorbent.

Background: Currently, there is limited research on the specific relationship between N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) exposure and the odds of kidney stones. We aimed to investigate the relationship between DEET exposure and the prevalence of kidney stones. Methods: We included 7,567 qualified participants in our research from the 2007-2016 NHANES survey. We carried out three logistic regression models to explore the potential association between DEET exposure and the odds of kidney stones. Spline smoothing with generalized additive models (GAM) was utilized to assess the non-linear relationship and restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves was to determine the dose-response association. Multivariate regression models were used to conduct stratified analysis and sensitivity analysis. Results: Baseline characteristics of study participants presented the distribution of covariables. Regression analysis revealed that the odds of kidney stones were positively associated with the main metabolites of 3-diethyl-carbamoyl benzoic acid (DCBA) (log2) (OR = 1.05, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.08). The fourth quartile of urine DCBA showed a greater risk of kidney stones in the fully adjusted model (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.72). Another DEET metabolite of N, N-diethyl-3-hydroxymethylbenzamide (DHMB) was used to confirm the accuracy and stability of the results. The spline smoothing curve represented two main DEET metabolites had similar no-linear relationships and a positive trend with kidney stones proportion. RCS implied that the incidence of kidney stones rose with increasing levels of DEET exposure. High-risk groups on kidney stones were exhibited by stratified analysis under DEET exposure. Conclusion: Our study suggests that DEET exposure is positively associated with odds of kidney stones. Further investigation into the underlying processes of this association is required to guide the prevention and treatment of kidney stones.

The formation of nitrogen-containing organic compounds is crucial for understanding chemical evolution and the origin of life in the interstellar medium (ISM). In this study, we explore whether acrylonitrile (AN) and pyrrole (Py) can form new nitrogen-containing compounds after single-photon ionization in their gaseous clusters by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-infrared (IR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The results show that a strong linear H-bond is formed in neutral AN-Py, while cyclic or bicyclic H-bonded networks are formed in the neutral AN-Py2 cluster. It is found that the structure containing a new C-C covalent bond between two moieties in (AN-Py)+ is formed besides the formation of H-bonded structures after AN-Py is ionized by VUV light. In (AN-Py2)+ cluster cations, new C-C or C-N covalent bonds tend to be formed between two Py, with (Py)2+ as the core in the cluster. The results reveal that new covalent bonds are more likely to be formed between two Py species when AN and Py are present in the cationic clusters. These results provide spectroscopic evidence of the formation of new nitrogen-containing organic compounds from AN and Py induced by VUV, which are helpful for our understanding of the formation of diverse prebiotic molecules in interstellar space.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that the consumption of trans-fatty acids (TFAs) can increase the incidence of total mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. However, there are still no demographic studies on the effects of circulating TFA isoforms on the albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR), an early marker of chronic kidney disease. Our goal was to explore the possible relationships between TFAs and ACR. METHODS: In this study, complete TFAs and urinary ACR data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2009-2010 and 1999-2000 cycles). The independent linear relationships between different circulating TFA isoforms and the ACR were examined by performing multivariable linear regression models. Machine learning was used to analyze the contribution of the different TFA isoforms to the ACR. To assess the nonlinearity of the relationship, smooth curve fitting and an analysis of threshold effect were performed, and a stratified analysis was conducted to identify possible susceptible populations. RESULTS: Our analysis included a total of 3785 individuals. Elaidic acid, linolelaidic acid, and sum TFAs were shown to be positively associated with the ACR after full adjustment by weighted multivariable regression analysis. In the subgroup analysis, the positive associations were maintained in participants with hypertension and without diabetes. In the XGBoost model of the ACR, Sum TFAs were found to be the most crucial factor. In addition, smooth curve fitting showed that there was a nonlinear relationship between the different TFAs and the ACR, and there was a saturation point. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that TFA isoforms were positively and independently correlated with urinary albumin excretion, especially in participants with hypertension and without diabetes. This suggested that reducing trans fatty acid intake may reduce the risk of renal events.

There is growing evidence suggesting that exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can pose significant health risks, including interference with the function of the reproductive system. However, there has been a lack of research focused on the impact of common environmental VOCs on the levels of sex hormones in the general female population. In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis utilizing the database of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2013-2016). A total of 2633 participants were included in this study. The Pearson correlation model revealed the potential of co-exposure or co-toxicity between benzene and 2,5-dimethylfuran. According to GLM models, we discovered a significant positive association between blood levels of 2,5-dimethylfuran and benzene with testosterone levels in women. Subgroup analysis further identified that the women with underweight and healthy weight might be the high-risk subgroup. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was applied to further assess the univariate and bivariate exposure-response relationships between multiple VOCs. Our research systemically formulated the possible relationship between exposure to VOCs and female sex hormones, indicating the role of VOCs as a risk factor for endocrine disruption, especially benzene and 2,5-dimethylfuran. These findings have important implications for public health and call for further investigation.

Background: A series of novel inflammation-related indexes has been confirmed to be efficient indicators of human immune and inflammatory status, with great potential as predictors for a variety of diseases. However, the association between inflammation-related indexes and sex hormones in the general population remained uncertain. Methods: We incorporated data from the NHANES 2013-2016 survey of American adults. On the basis of distribution and comparison analysis, we chose to undertake separate analyses of men and women (including premenopausal and postmenopausal groups). Multivariable weighted linear regression models, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models, generalized linear analysis, stratified models, logistic regression models and sensitivity analysis were utilized to assess the relationships between inflammation-related indexes and sex hormones. Results: Total 9372 participants out of 20146 were fitted into our research. We conducted separate gender analysis due to different distribution. Multivariable weighted linear regression indicated every component of the inflammation-related index was negatively correlated with at least one component of the male hormone indexes. However, SII, NLR, PPN, and NC were associated positively with female estradiol. XGBoost identify SII, PLR and NLR were the critical indexes on sex hormones. Inflammation-related indexes was associated with Testosterone deficiency in male and postmenstrual group and associated with Excessive Estradiol in premenstrual group. Finally, the subgroup analysis revealed that the association between sex hormones and inflammatory indicators was prominent in American adults over the age of 60 or those with BMI (>28 kg/m2). Conclusion: In all, inflammation-related indexes act as independent risks associated with sex hormone alterations and metabolic disorder in both genders. Using multiple models, we revealed the relative importance of inflammation-related indexes. Subgroup analysis also identified the high-risk population. More prospective and experimental research should be conducted to validate the results.

Biochar has been recognized as a promising sustainable adsorbent for removing pollutants from wastewater. In this study, two natural minerals, attapulgite (ATP) and diatomite (DE) were co-ball milled with sawdust biochar (pyrolyzed at 600 °C for 2 h) at ratios of 10-40% (w/w) and examined the ability of methylene blue (MB) to be removed from aqueous solutions by them. All the mineral-biochar composites sorbed more MB than both ball milled biochar (MBC) and ball milled mineral alone, indicating there was a positive synergy in co-ball milling biochar with these minerals. The 10% (w/w) composites of ATP:BC (MABC10%) and DE:BC (MDBC10%) had the greatest MB maximum adsorption capacities (modeled by Langmuir isotherm modeling) and were 2.7 and 2.3 times that of MBC, respectively. The adsorption capacities of MABC10% and MDBA10% were 183.0 mg g-1 and 155.0 mg g-1 at adsorption equilibrium, respectively. These improvements can be owing to the greater content of oxygen-containing functional groups and higher cation exchange capacity of the MABC10% and MDBC10% composites. In addition, the characterization results also reveal that pore filling, π-π stacking interactions, hydrogen bonding of hydrophilic functional groups, and electrostatic adsorption of oxygen-containing functional groups also contribute prominently to the adsorption of MB. This, along with the greater MB adsorption at higher pH and ionic strengths, suggests the roles in MB adsorption was an electrostatic interaction and an ion exchange mechanism. These results demonstrate that mineral-biochar composites prepared by co-ball milling treatment were promising sorbents of ionic contaminants for environmental applications.

The formation of photodimers of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds (NHCs) can partially explain the DNA damage due to radiation. Pyrrole and its derivatives, as major components of DNA, are used to understand the phenomena at the molecular level. With the aid of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-infrared (IR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, herein, we explore the possibility of the formation of a new C-C or C-N bond in pyrrole (py) clusters in a supersonic jet after single-photon ionization. Both neutral (py)2 and (py)3 clusters are stabilized by multiple interactions, such as N-H⋯π hydrogen bonds and π⋯π interactions. With 118 nm light ionization of the (py)2, we elucidate that the two py are more inclined to be stabilized by a newly formed C-C or C-N covalent bond, besides the π-stacked parallel structure of (py)2+. The (py)3+ with a C-C or C-N covalent bonded (py)2+ core mainly contributes to the IR spectrum of (py)3+. The present results are helpful to elucidate the mechanism of DNA damage at a molecular level.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of lung function is essential for the early screening chronic airway diseases (CADs). Nevertheless, it is still not widely used for early diagnosing CADs in epidemiological or primary care settings. Thus, we used data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to discuss the relationship between the serum uric acid/serum creatinine (SUA/SCr) ratio and lung function in general adults to gain the role of SUA/SCr in early assessment of lung function abnormalities. METHODS: From 2007 to 2012 NHANES, a total of 9569 people were included in our study. Using the regression model, XGBoost algorithm model, generalised linear model and two-piecewise linear regression model, the link between the SUA/SCr ratio and lung function was investigated. RESULTS: After correcting for confounding variables, the data revealed that forced vital capacity (FVC) declined by 47.630 and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) decreased by 36.956 for each additional unit of SUA/SCr ratio. However, there was no association between SUA/SCr and FEV1/FVC. In the XGBoost model of FVC, the top five most important were glycohaemoglobin, total bilirubin, SUA/SCr, total cholesterol and aspartate aminotransferase, whereas in FEV1, were glycohaemoglobin, total bilirubin, total cholesterol, SUA/SCr and serum calcium. In addition, we determined the linear and inverse association between SUA/SCr ratio and FVC or FEV1 by constructing a smooth curve. CONCLUSIONS: In the general American population, the SUA/SCr ratio is inversely linked with FVC and FEV1, but not with FEV1/FVC, according to our research. Future studies should investigate the impact of SUA/SCr on lung function and identify possible mechanisms of action.

We carried out whole transcriptome sequencing (WTS) on the tumor and the matching adjacent normal tissues from five patients having Xp11 translocation renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This was performed in terms of obtaining more understanding of the genomic panorama and molecular basis of this cancer. To examine gene-regulatory networks in XP11 translocation RCC, variance expression analysis was carried out, followed by functional enrichment analysis. Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) of Xp11 translocation RCC data was used to validate the results. As per inclusion criteria, a total of 1886 differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs), 56 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs), 223 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), and 1764 differentially expressed circRNAs (DEcircRNAs) were found. KEGG enrichment study of DEmiRNA, DElncRNA, and DEcircRNA target genes identified the function of protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome, and neutrophil-mediated immunity. Three subnetwork modules integrated from the PPI network also revealed the genes involved in protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome, and protein degradation processes, which may regulate the Xp11 translocation RCC process. The ceRNA complex network was created by Cytoscape, which included three upregulated circRNAs, five upregulated lncRNAs, 24 upregulated mRNAs, and two downregulated miRNAs (hsa-let-7d-5p and hsa-miR-433-3p). The genes as a prominent component of the complex ceRNA network may be key factors in the pathogenesis of Xp11 translocation RCC. Our findings clarified the genomic and transcriptional complexity of Xp11 translocation RCC while also pointing to possible new targets for Xp11 translocation RCC characterization.

Alternative polyadenylation (APA) is emerging as a crucial regulatory mechanism in bladder cancer (BC), while it remains elusive whether APA influences the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) in BC. We identified two distinct subtypes of BC by APA-related regulatory genes expression profiles. The two subtypes have different pathological grades, prognostic outcomes, tumor immune infiltration characteristics, and pathway enrichment. Subsequently, CPSF3 was identified as a potential immune infiltration-related gene in BC. Highly expressed CPSF3 was positively correlated with unfavorable prognosis and high CD276 expression in BC. Moreover, we verified the expression of CPSF3 in BC tissues and cell lines by qRT-PCR. In conclusion, the study indicates that APA regulatory factors play an important role in immune infiltration of BC, and that CPSF3 was a potentially prognostic marker and immunotherapy target for BC.

Background: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a large group of chemicals widely used in people's daily routines. Increasing evidence revealed the VOCs' accumulating toxicity. However, the VOCs toxicity in male prostate has not been reported previously. Thus, we comprehensively evaluated the association between VOCs and prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Methods: A total of 2016 subjects were included in our study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with VOCs, PSA, and other variables among U.S. average population. We constructed XGBoost Algorithm Model, Regression Model, and Generalized linear Model (GAM) to analyze the potential association. Stratified analysis was used to identify high-risk populations. Results: XGBoost Algorithm model identified blood chloroform as the most critical variable in the PSA concentration. Regression analysis suggested that blood chloroform was a positive association with PSA, which showed that environmental chloroform exposure is an independent risk factor that may cause prostate gland changes [ß, (95% CI), P = 0.007, (0.003, 0.011), 0.00019]. GAM observed the linear relationship between blood chloroform and PSA concentration. Meanwhile, blood chloroform linear correlated with water chloroform in the lower dose range, indicating that the absorption of water may be the primary origin of chloroform. Stratified associations analysis identified the high-risk group on the chloroform exposures. Conclusion: This study revealed that blood chloroform was positively and independently associated with total PSA level, suggesting that long-term environmental chloroform exposure may cause changes in the prostate gland.

We report the influence of sp2 content in carbon catalyst on the catalytic activity for acetylene hydrochlorination. Nanodiamonds (NDs) were used as the precursor and calcinated under different temperatures. The resulting ND500, ND700, ND900, and ND1100 catalysts were characterized, and the sp2 content increased with increasing calcination temperature. The specific activities of the catalysts first increased and then decreased with increasing sp2 content. The highest catalytic activity could be obtained in the ND-900 catalyst with a sp2 value of 43.9%. The density functional theory results showed that the adsorption sites for acetylene and hydrogen chloride were located at the interface between sp2 and sp3 configuration.

Computational and condensed phase experimental evidence for the existence of S∴N and S∴O hemibonded structures has been reported previously, but no gas phase experimental evidence has been reported. To experimentally explore the existence of the S∴N and S∴O hemibonds in the gas phase, we recorded the infrared photodissociation action spectra of four cationic clusters: [CH3SH-NH3]+, [CH3SCH3-NH3]+, [CH3SCH3-H2O]+, and [CH3OCH3-H2O]+. Combined with the calculation results, it is found that the S∴N hemibonded structure is competitive with the S⋯HN H-bonded structure, though only the latter structure is actually observed in [CH3SH-NH3]+. The spectral and theoretical results show that hemibonds can form between the second- (oxygen or nitrogen) and the third-period elements (sulfur) in the heterodimer clusters of [CH3SCH3-NH3]+ and [CH3SCH3-H2O]+. However, the S∴N and S∴O hemibonded structures are found competitive with the C⋯HN and CH⋯O H-bonded structures, respectively, and both the structures coexist. On the other hand, the O∴O hemibonded structure is much less stable than other hydrogen bonded (H-bonded) structures in [CH3OCH3-H2O]+, and it shows no clear contribution to the observed spectrum. This study provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the existence of S∴N and S∴O hemibonds in the gas phase and their competition with the H-bonds, which may be also fundamentally important in biological processes.

(1) Background: Increasing evidence indicates that lipid metabolism may influence the concentration of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). However, the association between triglycerides and PSA remains unclear and complicated. Hence, we evaluated the correlation between triglycerides and PSA based on the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. (2) Methods: A total of 2910 participants out of 41,156 participants fit into our study after conducting the screening from the 2003 to 2010 NHANES survey. Serum triglycerides were the independent variable of our study, and PSA was the dependent variable; (3) Results: In our study, the average age of chosen participants was 59.7 years (±12.7). After adjusting for covariates, the result indicated that for each additional unit of serum triglyceride (mg/dL), the PSA concentrations were reduced by 0.0043 ng/mL (-0.0082, -0.0005) with a statistical difference. Furthermore, we used machine learning of the XGBoost model to determine the relative importance of selected variables as well as constructed a smooth curve based on the fully adjusted model to investigate the possible linear relationship between the triglyceride and PSA concentrations. (4) Conclusions: The serum triglyceride is independently and negatively correlated with PSA among American males, which may make it hard to detect asymptomatic prostate cancer and diagnose at an advance stage with higher triglycerides due to detection bias.
