RESUMEN

Perilla leaf oil (PLO) is a global premium vegetable oil with abundant nutrients and substantial economic value, rendering it susceptible to potential adulteration by unscrupulous entrepreneurs. The addition of cinnamon oil (CO) is one of the main adulteration avenues for illegal PLOs. In this study, new and real-time ambient mass spectrometric methods were developed to detect CO adulteration in PLO. First, atmospheric solids analysis probe tandem mass spectrometry combined with principal component analysis and principal component analysis-linear discriminant analysis was employed to differentiate between authentic and adulterated PLO. Then, a spectral library was established for the instantaneous matching of cinnamaldehyde in the samples. Finally, the results were verified using the SRM mode of ASAP-MS/MS. Within 3 min, the three methods successfully identified CO adulteration in PLO at concentrations as low as 5% v/v with 100% accuracy. The proposed strategy was successfully applied to the fraud detection of CO in PLO.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether the association between dyslipidemia status and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index with myocardial damage varies in the context of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study aimed to determine the differential effects of dyslipidemia status and TyG index on left ventricular (LV) global function and myocardial microcirculation in patients with T2DM using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. METHODS: A total of 226 T2DM patients and 72 controls who underwent CMR examination were included. The T2DM group was further categorized into subgroups based on the presence or absence of dyslipidemia (referred to as T2DM (DysL+) and T2DM (DysL-)) or whether the TyG index exceeded 9.06. CMR-derived LV perfusion parameters, remodeling index, and global function index (GFI) were assessed and compared among groups. A multivariable linear regression model was employed to evaluate the effects of various variables on LV myocardial microcirculation, remodeling index, and GFI. RESULTS: The LV GFI sequentially decreased in controls, T2DM (DysL-), and T2DM (DysL+) groups (p < 0.001), and was lower (p = 0.003) in T2DM with higher TyG index group than in lower TyG index group. The LV remodeling index was higher in higher TyG index group than in lower TyG index group (p = 0.002), but there was no significant difference in whether the subgroup was accompanied by dyslipidemia. Multivariable analysis revealed that the TyG index, but not dyslipidemia status, was independently associated with LV remodeling index (ß coefficient[95% confidence interval], 0.152[0.025, 0.268], p = 0.007) and LV GFI (- 0.159[- 0.281, - 0.032], p = 0.014). For LV myocardial microcirculation, perfusion index, upslope, and max signal intensity sequentially decreased in controls, T2DM (DysL-), and T2DM (DysL+) groups (all p < 0.001). Dyslipidemia status independently correlated with perfusion index (- 0.147[- 0.272, - 0.024], p = 0.02) and upslope (- 0.200[- 0.320, 0.083], p = 0.001), while TyG index was independently correlated with time to maximum signal intensity (0.141[0.019, 0.257], p = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS: Both dyslipidemia status and higher TyG index were associated with further deterioration of LV global function and myocardial microvascular function in the context of T2DM. The effects of dyslipidemia and a higher TyG index appear to be differential, which indicates that not only the amount of blood lipids and glucose but also the quality of blood lipids are therapeutic targets for preventing further myocardial damage.

Background: Smooth muscle cell (SMC) plasticity and phenotypic switching play prominent roles in the pathogenesis of multiple diseases, but their role in tumorigenesis is unknown. We investigated whether and how SMC diversity and plasticity plays a role in tumor angiogenesis and the tumor microenvironment. Methods and Results: We use SMC-specific lineage-tracing mouse models and single cell RNA sequencing to observe the phenotypic diversity of SMCs participating in tumor vascularization. We find that a significant proportion of SMCs adopt a phenotype traditionally associated with macrophage-like cells. These cells are transcriptionally similar to 'resolution phase' M2b macrophages, which have been described to have a role in inflammation resolution. Computationally predicted by the ligand-receptor algorithm CellChat, signaling from BST2 on the surface of tumor cells to PIRA2 on SMCs promote this phenotypic transition; in vitro SMC assays demonstrate upregulation of macrophage transcriptional programs, and increased proliferation, migration, and phagocytic ability when exposed to BST2. Knockdown of BST2 in the tumor significantly decreases the transition towards a macrophage-like phenotype, and cells that do transition have a comparatively higher inflammatory signal typically associated with anti-tumor effect. Conclusion: As BST2 is known to be a poor prognostic marker in multiple cancers where it is associated with an M2 macrophage-skewed TME, these studies suggest that phenotypically switched SMCs may have a previously unidentified role in this immunosuppressive milieu. Further translational work is needed to understand how this phenotypic switch could influence the response to anti-cancer agents and if targeted inhibition of SMC plasticity would be therapeutically beneficial.

AbstractInclusion body hepatitis (IBH) is an economically important viral disease primarily affecting the poultry industry. In this study, we isolated a strain of FAdV-8b (strain SDYT) from naturally infected ducks and the hexon and fiber gene sequences were analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. In order to study the pathogenicity of FAdV-8b on Cherry Valley ducks, we inoculated 10- and 20-day-old ducks with 0.3 ml of FAdV-4 virus (TCID50 of 105.5/0.1 ml) either orally or intramuscularly. Clinical signs, gross lesions and histopathological changes, cytokines, viral load and antibody levels were noticed and recorded within 15 days after infection.Pathomorphological investigations revealed that ducks in the experimental group exhibited hepatitis symptoms. Histopathology showed multiple-organ damage, including serious liver and kidney lesions. Furthermore, elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines and antibodies was noticed, due to the infection and innate immune response. At later stage of infection immunosuppression occurred, resulting in decreased levels of cytokines. Determination of viral load indicated that the virus was present in several organs, with the highest viral DNA load found in the liver, followed by the kidney. Compared to birds infected orally, the intramuscular group exhibited the highest viral load. In summary, this study increases our understanding of the pathogenicity of FAdV-8b in ducks and establishes a model that will inform antiviral drug testing and vaccine evaluation for IBH, thereby preventing and reducing the spread of IBH in the poultry industry.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a prevalent neurological complication that can impair learning and memory for days, months, or even years after anesthesia/surgery. POCD is strongly associated with an altered composition of the gut microbiota (dysbiosis), but the accompanying metabolic changes and their role in gut-brain communication and POCD pathogenesis remain unclear. Here, the present study reports that anesthesia/surgery in aged mice induces elevated intestinal indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) expression and activity, which shifts intestinal tryptophan (TRP) metabolism toward more IDO-catalyzed kynurenine (KYN) and less gut bacteria-catabolized indoleacetic acid (IAA). Both anesthesia/surgery and intraperitoneal KYN administration induce increased KYN levels that correlate with impaired spatial learning and memory, whereas dietary IAA supplementation attenuates the anesthesia/surgery-induced cognitive impairment. Mechanistically, anesthesia/surgery increases interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-producing group 1 innate lymphoid cells (ILC1) in the small intestine lamina propria and elevates intestinal IDO expression and activity, as indicated by the higher ratio of KYN to TRP. The IDO inhibitor 1-MT and antibodies targeting IFN-γ or ILCs mitigate anesthesia/surgery-induced cognitive dysfunction, suggesting that intestinal ILC1 expansion and the ensuing IFN-γ-induced IDO upregulation may be the primary pathway mediating the shift to the KYN pathway in POCD. The ILC1-KYN pathway in the intestine could be a promising therapeutic target for POCD.

RESUMEN

Scientific risk assessment of exogenous and endogenous toxic substances in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is of great significance. The present review comprises a comprehensive summary of progress in the health risk assessment of harmful exogenous substances in TCMs. Such substances include heavy metals, pesticide residues, biotoxins, and endogenous toxic components involving pyrrolizidine alkaloids. The review also discusses the strengths and weaknesses of various bioaccessibility and bioavailability models, and their applications in risk assessment. Future avenues of risk assessment research are highlighted, including further exploration of risk assessment parameters, innovation of bioaccessibility and bioavailability techniques, enhancement of probabilistic risk assessment combined with bioavailability, improvement of cumulative risk assessment strategies, and formulation of strategies for reducing relative bioavailability (RBA) values in TCMs. Such efforts represent an attempt to develop a risk assessment system that is capable of evaluating the exogenous and endogenous toxic substances in TCMs to ensure its safe use in clinics, and to promote the sustainable development of the TCM industry.

RESUMEN

The increasing frequency of cervical and lumbar spine disorders, driven by aging and evolving lifestyles, has led to a rise in spinal surgeries using pedicle screws. Robotic spinal surgery systems have emerged as a promising innovation, offering enhanced accuracy in screw placement and improved surgical outcomes. We focused on literature of this field from the past 5 years, and a comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar. Robotic spinal surgery systems have significantly impacted spinal procedures by improving pedicle screw placement accuracy and supporting various techniques. These systems facilitate personalized, minimally invasive, and low-radiation interventions, leading to greater precision, reduced patient risk, and decreased radiation exposure. Despite advantages, challenges such as high costs and a steep learning curve remain. Ongoing advancements are expected to further enhance these systems' role in spinal surgery.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, debilitating condition with limited therapeutic options. Dietary components like blueberries have emerged as potential modulators of inflammation and tissue repair in gastrointestinal diseases. This study investigated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis mediated protective effects of blueberries in ameliorating dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced IBD. Firstly, a total of 86 anthocyanin compounds were identified in blueberry extract by LC-MS spectroscopy, including 35 cyanidin, 9 delphinidin, 14 malvidin, 10 peonidin, and 9 petunidin. Then, the animal study showed that blueberry supplementation notably ameliorated DSS-induced IBD symptoms, as evidenced by improved histopathological scores and a reduced disease activity index (DAI) score. Additionally, blueberries attenuated ER stress by inhibiting the colonic PERK/eIF2α/ATF4/CHOP signaling pathway. Furthermore, blueberries inhibited the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, caspase-3, and decreased colonic apoptosis, as evidenced by TUNEL assay results. However, it did not affect the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins, bcl-2 and bcl-xl. Finally, blueberries enhanced the intestinal barrier by upregulating ZO-1, claudin-1, occludin, and E-cadherin. In conclusion, blueberries demonstrate therapeutic potential against DSS-induced IBD-like symptoms in mice, possibly by regulating ER stress-mediated apoptosis pathways. These findings suggest that blueberries might be an effective dietary intervention for IBD management.

C_(20)-diterpenoid alkaloids are mainly distributed in plants of genus Aconitum, Delphinium, and Consolida in the Ranunculaceae. Their chemical structures are mainly categorized into nine types such as atisines, denudatines, hetidines, and hetisines. Bioactivity studies have shown that C_(20)-diterpenoid alkaloids have exhibited superior anti-tumor, analgesic, antiarrhythmic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this review, the chemical structures and biological activities of 190 C_(20)-diterpenoid alkaloids reported in the Ranunculaceae from 2002 to the present were summarized, so as to provide a reference for the subsequent research on C_(20)-diterpenoid alkaloids in plants of Ranunculaceae.

The National Nutrition Plan(2017-2030) and the Healthy China Action Plan(2019-2030) propose to vigorously develop traditional dietary care services, fully leverage the role of traditional dietary care in modern nutrition, and guide citizens to develop dietary habits that are in line with the dietary characteristics of different regions in China. Traditional dietary care has a long history in China and is one of the brilliant treasures of Chinese cuisine and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) culture. It has played an important role in disease prevention, treatment, and health preservation and longevity. To promote the traditional culture of TCM, and guide and standardize the application and promotion of dietary care, it is necessary to develop a dietary care guideline with TCM characteristics. Based on the theories and practices of TCM, the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences(CACMS) has developed this guideline, which is tailored to local conditions and combined with modern nutrition, and targets people with different physical constitutions. According to the principles of dialectical diet, tailored to people, times, and local conditions, reinforcing healthy qi, correction, the combination of meat and vegetables, and the combination of four qi and five flavors, suitable ingredients are recommended(including TCM materials that are both food and medicinal materials). By promoting the popularization and development of traditional dietary care, this guideline contributes to integrating the strength of TCM into a unique nutritional and health model with Chinese characteristics.

Introduction: Osimertinib, a third-generation EGFR-TKI, is known for its high efficacy against brain metastases (BM) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) due to its ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. This study aims to evaluate the use of brain MRI radiomics in predicting the intracranial efficacy to osimertinib in NSCLC patients with BM. Materials and methods: This study analyzed 115 brain metastases from NSCLC patients with the EGFR-T790M mutation treated with second-line osimertinib. The primary endpoint was intracranial response, and the secondary endpoint was intracranial progression-free survival (iPFS). We performed tumor delineation, image preprocessing, and radiomics feature extraction. Using a 5-fold cross-validation strategy, we built radiomic models with eight feature selectors and eight machine learning classifiers. The models' performance was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis. Results: The dataset of 115 brain metastases was divided into training and validation sets in a 7:3 ratio. The radiomic model utilizing the mRMR feature selector and stepwise logistic regression classifier showed the highest predictive accuracy, with AUCs of 0.879 for the training cohort and 0.786 for the validation cohort. This model outperformed a clinical-MRI morphological model, which included age, ring enhancement, and peritumoral edema (AUC: 0.794 for the training cohort and 0.697 for the validation cohort). The radiomic model also showed strong performance in calibration and decision curve analyses. Using a radiomic-score threshold of 199, patients were classified into two groups with significantly different median iPFS (3.0 months vs. 15.4 months, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that MRI radiomics can effectively predict the intracranial efficacy of osimertinib in NSCLC patients with brain metastases. This approach holds promise for assisting clinicians in personalizing treatment strategies.

Nonionic surfactant aerosols play a crucial role in many industries, but they can cause acute irritation to users' eyes during spraying. This cytotoxic process is associated with corneal cell necrosis causing cell membrane disruption. Industrial grade surfactants are typically polydisperse mixtures described by their nominal chemical structure but how the polydispersity affects their interactions with cell membrane, remains largely unexplored. A better understanding could benefit product formulations to maximise their efficiency whilst minimising their toxicity to the users. In this study, poly-oxyethylene glycol monododecyl ethers (C12E4, C12E23) were used to form ideal binary surfactant mixtures. The cytotoxicities of mono and polydispersed surfactants towards human corneal epithelial cells were examined, followed by a series of biophysical characterisations of interactions between surfactants and model cell membranes. Notably, to probe the journey of individual C12E4 and C12E23 surfactant molecules across the cell membrane from a binary surfactant mixture, "two-colour" neutron reflection measurements were achieved via Hydrogen/Deuterium substitution. The relative distributions of C12E4 and C12E23 across cell membranes and their nanostructural conformations revealed a synergistic membrane-lytic ability initiated by surfactant mixing, with the more hydrophobic C12E4 exhibiting stronger membrane binding potency than the hydrophilic C12E23. The exact molar ratio of C12E4 against C12E23 in the mixture determined how the mixed surfactant interacted with the cell membrane, and how the process directly impacted cytotoxicity and eye irritation. Thus, the cytotoxicity of polydisperse surfactants is not the same as monodisperse surfactant of the same average structure. This work provides a useful basis for the assessment of surfactant mixing by balancing their efficiency and toxicity.

BACKGROUND: IgA vasculitis (IgAV), previously known as Henoch-Schönlein purpura, is an IgA-mediated systemic small vessel vasculitis that tends to be more severe in adults than in children. Early diagnosis of IgAV involving the gastrointestinal tract remains difficult, especially in patients who present with gastrointestinal symptoms before purpura. This study aims to systematically analyze the abdominal imaging and endoscopic features of adult patients with abdominal IgAV, providing assistance to clinicians in the early recognition of this condition. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study was conducted in three large tertiary hospitals in China from January 2017 to January 2024. A total of 108 adult patients with abdominal IgAV, who had complete abdominal imaging and/or endoscopy results, were enrolled. The clinical manifestations, abdominal imaging findings, endoscopic characteristics, and serological indicators of the patients were analyzed. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 40 years (IQR: 26-55), with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1. Acute abdominal pain was the most common presenting symptom (100 patients, 92.59%). Bowel wall thickening was the most frequent finding on abdominal imaging (50/86 patients, 58.14%). Gastrointestinal endoscopy showed findings of congestion and erosion (32/67 patients, 47.76%), and erosion with ulcers (21/67 patients, 31.34%). Among patients with both imaging and endoscopic results, the duodenum (28/51 patients, 54.90%) and ileum (28/51 patients, 54.90%) were the most commonly affected sites. Laboratory findings revealed elevated white blood cell count (WBC), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer and fibrinogen levels, along with decreased albumin level. Comparing patients with gastrointestinal symptoms versus purpura as the initial symptom, those with gastrointestinal symptoms had higher levels of WBC (p < 0.05) and NLR (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The most common symptom in adult abdominal IgAV patients is acute abdominal pain. In the early stage of the disease, most patients exhibit elevated levels of WBC, NLR, CRP, D-dimer, and fibrinogen, along with decreased albumin level. The duodenum and ileum are the most commonly affected sites. By integrating these findings, clinicians can identify abdominal IgAV patients earlier and more accurately.


Adult abdominal IgAV is prevalent in middle-aged adults, with abdominal pain being the main presenting symptom. Abdominal imaging and endoscopy suggest that the duodenum and ileum are particularly susceptible to involvement. Laboratory tests typically show elevated white blood cell count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, C-reactive protein, D-dimer and fibrinogen levels, along with decreased albumin level. These findings can aid in the early recognition of IgAV and facilitate timely treatment, thereby improving patient prognosis.

Currently, few studies have examined the relationship between imaging data from chest computed tomography (CT) and HF. This study demonstrated that pectoral muscle index (PMI) and vertebral body attenuation values could predict HF, aiming to opportunistically assess the risk of HF in patients without bone mineral density (BMD) based on chest CT for other diseases. METHODS: In the retrospective study, 800 participants who had both BMD and chest CT were enrolled from January 2021 to January 2024. After exclusion, 472 patients were finally enrolled, divided into the healthy control (HC) group and the HF group. Clinical data were collected, and differences between the two groups were compared. A predictive model was constructed based on the PMI and CT value of the fourth thoracic vertebra (T4HU) by logistic regression analysis, and the predictive effect of the model was analyzed by using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Finally, the clinical utility of the model was analyzed using decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curves. RESULTS: Both PMI and T4HU were lower in the HF group than in the HC group (p < 0.05); low PMI and low T4HU were risk factors for HF. The predictive model incorporating PMI and T4HU on the basis of age and BMI had excellent diagnostic efficacy with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.865 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.830-0.894, p < 0.01), sensitivity and specificity of 0.820 and 0.754, respectively. The clinical utility of the model was validated using calibration curves and DCA. The AUC of the predictive model incorporating BMD based on age and BMI was 0.865 (95% CI: 0.831-0.895, p < 0.01), with sensitivity and specificity of 0.698 and 0.711, respectively. There was no significant difference in diagnostic efficacy between the two models (p = 0.967). CONCLUSIONS: PMI and T4HU are predictors of HF in patients. In the absence of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the risk of HF can be assessed by measuring the PMI and T4HU on chest CT examination due to other diseases, and further treatment can be provided in time to reduce the incidence of HF.

The self-assembling morphologies of proteins, nucleic acids, and peptides are well correlated with their functioning in biological systems. In spite of extensive studies for the morphologies regulating, the directional control of the assembly morphology structure for the peptides still remains challenging. Here, the directional structure control of a bola-like peptide Ac-KIIF-CONH2 (KIIF) was realized by introducing different amount of acetonitrile to the system. The morphologies were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the secondary structure was evaluated by circular dichroism (CD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results demonstrated that the introducing of different amount of acetonitrile has significantly tuned the hydrophobic interactions amongst the side chains, thus affecting the self-assembling morphologies. As acetonitrile content increased, the assemblies changed from nanotubes to helical/twisted ribbons and then to thin fibrils, with a steady decrease in the width. In contrast, the assemblies changed from thin fibrils to helical/twisted ribbons, and then to matured nanotubes, exhibiting a steady increase in the width with peptide concentration increasing. Complementary molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrated the important role of acetonitrile in controlling the hydrophobic interactions, providing microscopic evidence for the structure transition process. We believe such observations provide important insights into the design and fabrication of functional materials with controlled shape and size.

One new meroterpene derivative, millmerranones G (1), and three known analogues (2-4) were identified from the mangrove-derived fungus Aspergillus sp. GXIMD 03004, which was isolated from the leaves of mangrove Acanthus ilicifolius L. collected from Beibu Gulf in China. The structure of 1 was characterised by a comprehensive interpretation of the NMR spectroscopic and HRESIMS data. The absolute configuration for 1 was established using experimental and calculated ECD data. The anti-Vibrio activities of all compounds were evaluated, the result showed that compounds 1 and 2 has weak activity against Vibrio harveyi.

BACKGROUND: Local vegetable production is susceptible to various fungal pathogens, the most common and lethal of which are Fusarium commune and Rhizoctonia solani. Early detection of these pathogens is challenging, and by the time visual symptoms appear, the pathogens may have already spread extensively, causing massive damage to the production. In this study, we explored the use of hyperspectral data for early detection of diseases caused by F. commune or R. solani in bok choy Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis by collecting hyperspectral data from healthy plants and plants inoculated with either fungal pathogen in a controlled experimental set-up. RESULTS: Based on the collected data, we employed various tree-based, distribution-based, geometric, neural networks and ensemble learning algorithms to train detection models. Among the trained models, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) models performed the best with overall accuracy reaching 95.9 ± 0.26%. MLP models could differentiate between healthy and infected plants with 99% precision after 1 day of infection, and distinguish between different fungal pathogens with 99% precision after 2 days. During this period, no visible symptoms of fungal infection could be observed. Further analysis into trained MLP models and general reflectance profiles of plants also revealed a high correlation of the spectral regions 445-460, 560-595, 606-620 and 719-728 nm with fungal infection in bok choy plants. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the potential of hyperspectral imaging as a highly precise early detection tool for fungal diseases in plants. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Two sulfur-containing heterodimers of a cytochalasan and a macrolide, sucurchalasins A and B (1 and 2), and four known cytochalasan monomers (3-6), as well as four known macrolide derivatives (7-10), were obtained from the endophytic fungus Aspergillus spelaeus GDGJ-286. Sucurchalasins A and B (1 and 2) are the first cytochalasan heterodimers formed via a thioether bridge between cytochalasan and curvularin macrolide units. Their structures were elucidated by detailed analysis of NMR, LC-MS/MS, and X-ray crystallography. In bioassays, 1 and 2 exhibited cytotoxic effects on A2780 cells, with IC50 values of 3.9 and 8.3 µM, respectively. They also showed antibacterial activities against E. faecalis and B. subtilis with MIC values of 3.1 and 6.3 µg/mL, respectively.

Heterotrophic nitrification remains a mystery for decades. It has been commonly hypothesized that heterotrophic nitrifiers oxidize ammonia to hydroxylamine and then to nitrite in a way similar to autotrophic AOA and AOB. Recently, heterotrophic nitrifiers from Alcaligenes were found to oxidize ammonia to hydroxylamine and then to N2 ("dirammox", direct ammonia oxidation) by the gene cluster dnfABC with a yet-to-be-reported mechanism. The role of a potential glutamine amidotransferase DnfC clues the heterotrophic ammonia oxidation might involving in glutamine. Here, we found Alcaligenes faecalis JQ135 could oxidize amino acids besides ammonia. We discovered that glutamine is an intermediate of the dirammox pathway and the glutamine synthetase gene is essential for both A. faecalis JQ135 and the E. coli cells harboring dnfABC gene cluster to oxidize amino acids and ammonia. Our study expands understanding of heterotrophic nitrifiers and challenges the classical paradigm of heterotrophic nitrification.
