RESUMEN

Silver-metal organic framework (Ag@MOF) has exhibited outstanding antimicrobial activity in antimicrobial applications, and reducing the biotoxicity associated with silver has become a research priority. In this study, Ag@MOF was initially modified with sodium alginate (SA) to form SA-Ag@MOF. The results showed that SA could control the release of Ag+, reducing the release by about 8% at 24 h, and the biotoxicity was significantly reduced. Finally, SA-Ag@MOF was applied as an antimicrobial agent in citric acid-modified PVA film to develop a novel composite antimicrobial film. When added at 2 MIC, the CA3-M2 film can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus, and the inhibition rate has reached 98%. For white radish packaging applications, CA3-M2 film inhibited the growth of surface microorganisms, while ensuring moisture and tissue hardness to extend shelf-life up to 7 days. Overall, the strategy conceived here can be a theoretical basis for novel antimicrobial packaging.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing number of different brands of robotic total knee arthroplasty (TKA) systems. Most robotic TKA systems share the same coronal alignment, while the definitions of sagittal alignment vary. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether these discrepancies impact the sagittal alignment of the lower extremity. METHODS: A total of 72 lower extremity computed tomography scans were included in our study, and 3-dimensional models were obtained using software. A total of 7 brands of robotic TKA systems were included in the study. The lower extremity axes were defined based on the surgical guide for each implant. We also set the intramedullary axis as a reference to evaluate the discrepancies in sagittal alignment of each brand of robotic system. RESULTS: On the femoral side, the axis definition was the same for all 7 robotic TKA systems. The robotic TKA axes showed a 2.41° (1.58°, 3.38°) deviation from the intramedullary axis. On the tibial side, the 7 robots had different axis definitions. The tibial mechanical axis of 6 of the TKA systems was more flexed than that of the intramedullary axis, which means the posterior tibial slope was decreased while the tibial mechanical axis of the remaining system was more extended. CONCLUSIONS: The sagittal alignment of the lower extremity for 7 different brands of robotic TKA systems differed from each other and all deviated from the intramedullary axis. Surgeons should be aware of this discrepancy when using different brands of robotic TKA systems to avoid unexpected sagittal alignment and corresponding adverse clinical outcomes. Ras homology enriched in the brain (Rheb) is well established as a critical regulator of cell proliferation and differentiation in response to growth factors and nutrients. However, the role of Rheb1 in limb development remains unknown. Here, we found that Rheb1 was dynamically expressed during the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes in the growth plate. Given that Prrx1+ limb-bud-like mesenchymal cells are the source of limb chondrocytes and are essential for endochondral ossification, we conditionally deleted Rheb1 using Prrx1-Cre and found a limb dwarfism in Prrx1-Cre; Rheb1fl/fl mice. Normalized to growth plate height, the conditional knockout (cKO) mice exhibited a significant decrease in column count of proliferative zones which was increased in hypertrophic zones resulting in decreased growth plate size, indicating abnormal endochondral ossification. Interestingly, although Rheb1 deletion profoundly inhibited the transcription factor Sox9 in limb cartilage; levels of runx2 and collagen type 2 were both increased. These novel findings highlight the essential role of Rheb1 in limb growth and indicate a complex regulation of Rheb1 in chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation.

In order to cope with the increasingly severe food contamination and safety problems, a powerful sterilization of food packaging material is urgently needed. Chitosan (CS) has potential applications in food packaging due to its good film-forming properties, but its antibacterial activity is not sufficient to meet the needs in practical applications. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have the problem of weak immediate antibacterial activity as a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. Therefore, in this study, AgNPs@GA@Cur-POTS (AGCP) composite antibacterial system was prepared by combining AgNPs with antibacterial photodynamic therapy using gallic acid (GA) as a reducing agent, curcumin (Cur) as a photosensitizer and perfluorosilane (POTS) for surface modification. The results showed that AGCP could produce a large number of reactive oxygen species under blue light irradiation, killing >90 % of E. coli and S. aureus within 2 h. Subsequently, the composite film of CS loaded with AGCP (CS/AGCP) was prepared by the flow-delay method. The CS/AGCP composite film exhibited excellent barrier properties and antioxidant activity, while its antibacterial rates against E. coli and S. aureus reached 98.44 ± 1.27 % and 99.11 ± 0.24 %, respectively, while the OD630 values of the two groups of bacteria treated with it showed no significant increase in incubation for up to 132 h, exhibiting remarkable and sustained antibacterial effects. Taken together, this work will provide a new strategy for antibacterial food packaging.

Leptin protein was thought to be unique to leptin receptor (LepR), but the phenotypes of mice with mutation in LepR [db/db (diabetes)] and leptin [ob/ob (obese)] are not identical, and the cause remains unclear. Here, we show that db/db, but not ob/ob, mice had defect in tenotomy-induced heterotopic ossification (HO), implicating alternative ligand(s) for LepR might be involved. Ligand screening revealed that ANGPTL4 (angiopoietin-like protein 4), a stress and fasting-induced factor, was elicited from brown adipose tissue after tenotomy, bound to LepR on PRRX1+ mesenchymal cells at the HO site, thus promotes chondrogenesis and HO development. Disruption of LepR in PRRX1+ cells, or lineage ablation of LepR+ cells, or deletion of ANGPTL4 impeded chondrogenesis and HO in mice. Together, these findings identify ANGPTL4 as a ligand for LepR to regulate the formation of acquired HO.

Capripox viruses (CaPVs), including sheep pox virus (SPV), goat pox virus (GPV), and lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), are the cause of sheep pox (SPP), goat pox (GTP), and lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle. These diseases are of great economic significance to farmers, as they are endemic on farms and are a major constraint to international trade in livestock and their products. Capripoxvirus (CaPV) infections produce similar symptoms in sheep and goats, and the three viruses cannot be distinguished serologically. In this study, we developed a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) method for identifying CaPV in goats, sheep, and cattle. Clinical samples were tested and verified. The developed assay was highly specific for target viruses, including GPVSPV and LSDV, which had no cross-reaction with other viruses causing similar clinical symptoms. An artificially synthesized positive control plasmid using the CaPV 32 gene inserted into the vector pMD19-T was used as a template, and the correlation coefficient of the linear regression curve (R2) was 0.9916, the estimated amplification efficiency (E) was 96.06%, and the sensitivity (limit of detection, LOD) was 3.80 copies per reaction. Using the clinical samples as a template, the limit of detection (LOD) was 4.91 × 10-5 ng per reaction (1.60 × 10-5-2.13 × 10-3 ng, 95% confidence interval (CI)), which means that this method was one of the most sensitive detection assays for CaPVs. A total of 85 clinical samples from CaPV-infected animals (goats, sheep, and cattle) and 50 clinical samples from healthy animals were used to test and compare the diagnostic results using the Synergy Brands (SYBR) Green-based PCR method recommended by the World Organization of Animal Health (WOAH). Both diagnostic sensitivity (DSe) (95.8-100%, 95% CI) and diagnostic specificity (DSp) (92.9-100%, 95% CI) results of the real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and SYBR Green PCR were 100%, and the kappa value (κ) was 1.0 (1-1, 95% CI). In summary, the assay established based on TaqMan probes was advantageous in high specificity, sensitivity, and general applicability and could be a competitive candidate tool for the diagnosis of CaPV in clinically suspected animals.

Introduction: The growing demand for mental health support has highlighted the importance of conversational agents as human supporters worldwide and in China. These agents could increase availability and reduce the relative costs of mental health support. The provided support can be divided into two main types: cognitive and emotional. Existing work on this topic mainly focuses on constructing agents that adopt Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) principles. Such agents operate based on pre-defined templates and exercises to provide cognitive support. However, research on emotional support using such agents is limited. In addition, most of the constructed agents operate in English, highlighting the importance of conducting such studies in China. To this end, we introduce Emohaa, a conversational agent that provides cognitive support through CBT-Bot exercises and guided conversations. It also emotionally supports users through ES-Bot, enabling them to vent their emotional problems. In this study, we analyze the effectiveness of Emohaa in reducing symptoms of mental distress. Methods and Results: Following the RCT design, the current study randomly assigned participants into three groups: Emohaa (CBT-Bot), Emohaa (Full), and control. With both Intention-To-Treat (N=247) and PerProtocol (N=134) analyses, the results demonstrated that compared to the control group, participants who used two types of Emohaa experienced considerably more significant improvements in symptoms of mental distress, including depression (F[2,244]=6.26, p=0.002), negative affect (F[2,244]=6.09, p=0.003), and insomnia (F[2,244]=3.69, p=0.026). Discussion: Based on the obtained results and participants' satisfaction with the platform, we concluded that Emohaa is a practical and effective tool for reducing mental distress.

OBJECTIVE: Periprosthetic fracture in total hip arthroplasty (THA) can be catastrophic, and early detection and appropriate management are vital to the overall prognosis. This study aimed to describe and summarize the features of undetected intraoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures (IPFFs) in primary THA patients and treatment measures and to review the relevant literature. METHODS: We reviewed a total of 6350 primary THAs performed at our institution between January 2013 and December 2020 and screened all IPFFs. Of 138 IPFFs, 24 were undetected and met the inclusion criteria. We recorded and compared basic patient and operative information and measured some parameters to evaluate canal morphologies based on preoperative radiographs. We also compared fracture line characteristics using postoperative radiographs to summarize the features of intraoperative fractures and propose treatment strategies. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to test the normality of the variable distributions. Measured parameters in all groups were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and compared using Dunnett's test. The χ2 and Fisher exact tests were used to compare reoperation rates across the groups. Interrater and intrarater reliability were evaluated by intraclass correlation coefficients. RESULTS: Among the 24 hips, there was no significant difference in patient demographics, basic operative information or morphology. The incidence of IPFFs in primary THA patients was 2.17%, and up to 17.4% of IPFFs were undetected until postoperative fluoroscopy. The incidence of undetected IPFFs among all primary THA patients was 0.38% and varied by stem type, with the highest incidence in femurs with either anatomical (1.04%, 4/385) or modular stems (0.90%, 9/1003). Femurs with anatomical stems had a higher reoperation rate. The distal periprosthetic (Gruen zone 4) fracture line of femurs with tapered stems was more prone to involve the medial or lateral bone cortex, which could cause instability. CONCLUSION: An undetected IPFF is most likely in femurs fitted with a prosthesis of an inappropriate size or type. Anatomical stems will most likely cause unstable fractures; thus, it is recommended to use them with caution and note the possibility of medial distal femoral fracture. Improper modular stem type or size selection results in longitudinal fractures of the distal femur, and prophylactic cerclage wire binding is recommended in dysplastic hips. Incorrect use of tapered stems in well-ossified femurs may cause distal femoral fractures involving the medial or lateral bone cortex. Intraoperative fluoroscopy after implantation may help detect hidden fractures.

BACKGROUND: Petal blotch is a unique ornamental trait in angiosperm families, and blotch in rose petal is rare and has great esthetic value. However, the cause of the formation of petal blotch in rose is still unclear. The influence of key enzyme genes and regulatory genes in the pigment synthesis pathways needs to be explored and clarified. RESULTS: In this study, the rose cultivar 'Sunset Babylon Eyes' with rose-red to dark red blotch at the base of petal was selected as the experimental material. The HPLC-DAD and UPLC-TQ-MS analyses indicated that only cyanidin 3,5-O-diglucoside (Cy3G5G) contributed to the blotch pigmentation of 'Sunset Babylon Eyes', and the amounts of Cy3G5G varied at different developmental stages. Only flavonols but no flavone were found in blotch and non-blotch parts. As a consequence, kaempferol and its derivatives as well as quercetin and its derivatives may act as background colors during flower developmental stages. Despite of the differences in composition, the total content of carotenoids in blotch and non-blotch parts were similar, and carotenoids may just make the petals show a brighter color. Transcriptomic data, quantitative real-time PCR and promoter sequence analyses indicated that RC7G0058400 (F3'H), RC6G0470600 (DFR) and RC7G0212200 (ANS) may be the key enzyme genes for the early formation and color deepening of blotch at later stages. As for two transcription factor, RC7G0019000 (MYB) and RC1G0363600 (WRKY) may bind to the promoters of critical enzyme genes, or RC1G0363600 (WRKY) may bind to the promoter of RC7G0019000 (MYB) to activate the anthocyanin accumulation in blotch parts of 'Sunset Babylon Eyes'. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide a theoretical basis for the understanding of the chemical and molecular mechanism for the formation of petal blotch in rose.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a complex developmental deformity whose pathogenesis and susceptibility-related genes have yet to be elucidated. This systematic review summarizes the current literature on DDH-related gene mutations, animal model experiments, and epigenetic changes in DDH. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search of relevant documents in the Medline, Scopus, Cochrane, and ScienceDirect databases covering the period from October 1991 to October 2021. We analyzed basic information on the included studies and summarized the DDH-related mutation sites, animal model experiments, and epigenetic changes associated with DDH. RESULTS: A total of 63 studies were included in the analysis, of which 54 dealt with the detection of gene mutations, 7 presented details of animal experiments, and 6 were epigenetic studies. No genetic mutations were clearly related to the pathogenesis of DDH, including the most frequently studied genes on chromosomes 1, 17, and 20. Most gene-related studies were performed in Han Chinese or North American populations, and the quality of these studies was medium or low. GDF5 was examined in the greatest number of studies, and mutation sites with odds ratios > 10 were located on chromosomes 3, 9, and 13. Six mutations were found in animal experiments (i.e., CX3CR1, GDF5, PAPPA2, TENM3, UFSP2, and WISP3). Epigenetics research on DDH has focused on GDF5 promoter methylation, three microRNAs (miRNAs), and long noncoding RNAs. In addition, there was also a genetic test for miRNA and mRNA sequencing. CONCLUSIONS: DDH is a complex joint deformity with a considerable genetic component whose early diagnosis is significant for preventing disease. At present, no genes clearly involved in the pathogenesis of DDH have been identified. Research on mutations associated with this condition is progressing in the direction of in vivo experiments in animal models to identify DDH susceptibility genes and epigenetics analyses to provide novel insights into its pathogenesis. In the future, genetic profiling may improve matters.

The anammox process is considered as a revolutionary new denitrification technology. In this study, the anammox process was started in a single-stage moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) and the mechanism of excess removal of ammonia nitrogen was studied. At stage I (day 0-51), anammox bacteria (AnAOB) was enriched by feeding synthetic sewage without adding organic carbon. The removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was maintained at about 54% and the removal rate of total inorganic nitrogen was maintained at about 62%. At stage II (day 52-91), internal circulation was added into the MBBR. After adding internal circulation, the ammonium removal efficiency reached about 96% (at day 56) and the total nitrogen removal efficiency reached about 86%. At day 90, the biofilm sample was drowned out for high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the relative abundance of AnAOB was 23.23%. The dominant anammox genus was Candidatus Brocadia. The relative abundance of Nitrosomonas (ammonia oxidizing bacteria, AOB) was 0.63%. The excess ammonia nitrogen was removed by AOB and AnAOB through the partial nitrification and anammox (PNA) process.

This study evaluated the efficacy of neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy (Io+Chemo) versus chemotherapy alone (Chemo) in resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a real-world setting. The association of tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) with pathologic response to different neoadjuvant therapies was also explored.Stage I-III NSCLC patients who received Io+Chemo or Chemo alone followed by surgery were included in the study. Tumor tissues collected during surgery were subjected to TIME evaluation using multiplex immunohistochemistry to measure immune cell subsets, including T cells, B cells, NK cells, and macrophages. Fifty-five patients were included, including 24 treated with neoadjuvant Io+Chemo and 31 with Chemo alone. Io+Chemo induced significantly higher major pathologic response (MPR) (75.0% vs. 38.7%, P = 0.0133) and numerically better pathologic complete response (pCR) (33.3% vs. 12.9%, P = 0.1013) than Chemo. Compared with tumors with Chemo, tumors with Io+Chemo demonstrated a significantly higher ratio of M1 macrophage density in the tumor to that in the stroma (P = 0.0446), more abundant CD8+ cells in the stroma (P = 0.0335), and fewer PD-L1+CD68+ cells in both tumor and stroma. pCR/MPR patients displayed significantly higher density of CD3+, CD3+CD4+, CD20+, CD56 bright cell subsets and more tertiary lymphoid structures and significantly lower density of PD-L1+CD68+ and CD3+CD4+Foxp3+cells in the tumor or stroma. This study favored neoadjuvant Io+Chemo over Chemo and revealed the TIME features underlying the outperformance of Io+Chemo over Chemo.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to overview the findings of reported meta-analyses on unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) and high tibial osteotomy (HTO). METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis 2020 (PRISMA 2020) guidelines were followed. Two independent reviewers conducted a literature search of PubMed, Embase, the Web of Science, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for meta-analyses comparing UKA and HTO that were published prior to September 2021. Literature screening, data extraction, and article quality appraisal were performed according to the study protocol registered online at PROSPERO (CRD42021279152). RESULTS: A total of 10 meta-analyses were identified, and different studies reported different results. Five of the seven meta-analyses showed that the proportion of subjects with excellent or good functional results was higher for UKA than for HTO. All three meta-analyses showed that UKA was associated with lower pain levels, and all six of the studies that included an analysis of range of motion (ROM) reported that UKA was inferior to HTO. Four of the eight meta-analyses found that total complication rates were lower for UKA. Only 3 of the 10 meta-analyses found that UKA had lower revision rates. Moreover, in the subgroup analysis, the revision and complication rates of UKA were similar to those of opening-wedge HTO but much lower than those of closing-wedge HTO. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to HTO, UKA was associated with lower pain levels but inferior postoperative ROM. The results were inconclusive regarding whether UKA yielded better knee function scores and lower revision or complication rates than HTO. Accurate identification of indications and appropriate patient selection are essential for treating individuals with OA.

This study focused on the epigenetic alterations of DNA methylation and miRNAs for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) diagnosis and treatment using bioinformatics analyses. DNA methylation data and mRNA and miRNA expression microarray data were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The differentially methylated genes (DMGs), differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and differentially expressed miRNAs were analyzed by using the limma package. The DAVID database performed GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses. Using STRING and Cytoscape, we constructed the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and achieved visualization. The online analysis tool CMap was used to identify potential small-molecule drugs for LUAD. In LUAD, 607 high miRNA-targeting downregulated genes and 925 low miRNA-targeting upregulated genes, as well as 284 hypermethylated low-expression genes and 315 hypomethylated high-expression genes, were obtained. They were mainly enriched in terms of pathways in cancer, neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, cAMP signaling pathway, and cytosolic DNA-sensing pathway. In addition, 40 upregulated and 84 downregulated genes were regulated by both aberrant alternations of DNA methylation and miRNAs. Five small-molecule drugs were identified as a potential treatment for LUAD, and five hub genes (SLC2A1, PAX6, LEP, KLF4, and FGF10) were found in PPI, and two of them (SLC2A1 and KLF4) may be related to the prognosis of LUAD. In summary, our study identified a series of differentially expressed genes associated with epigenetic alterations of DNA methylation and miRNA in LUAD. Five small-molecule drugs and five hub genes may be promising drugs and targets for LUAD treatment.

In order to control COVID-19, rapid and accurate detection of the pathogenic, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is an urgent task. The target spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2 have been detected experimentally via Raman spectroscopy. However, there lacks high-accuracy theoretical Raman spectra of the spike proteins to as a standard reference for the clinic diagnostic purpose. In this paper, we propose a large fragment method to construct the high-precision Raman spectra for the spike proteins. The large fragment method not only reduces the calculation error but also improves the accuracy of the protein Raman spectra by completely calculating the interactions within the large fragment. The Pearson correlation coefficient of theoretical Raman spectra is greater than 0.929 or more. Compared with the experimental spectra, the characteristic patterns are easily visible. This work provides a detection standard for the spike proteins which shall bring a step closer to the fast recognition of SARS-CoV-2 via Raman spectroscopy method.

Morphology engineering was an effective strategy for 1,2-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) oxidation. Herein, TiO2 nanosheet supported MnCeOx (TiMn15Ce30-NS) showed excellent catalytic activity with T50% = 156 °C and T90% = 238 °C, which was better than the T50% = 213 °C and T90% = 247 °C for TiO2 nano truncated octahedron supported MnCeOx (TiMn15Ce30-NTO). TiMn15Ce30-NS also exhibited enhanced water resistance (T50% = 179 °C, T90% = 240 °C), and good stability with the o-DCB conversion retained at 98.9% for 12 h at 350 °C. The excellent catalytic activity of TiMn15Ce30-NS could be mainly ascribed to the preferentially exposed {001} crystal plane and Ce addition which favored the higher concentration of Mn4+ and surface active oxygen, along with stronger interaction between MnOx and CeOx. The present results deepen the understanding of the morphology-dependent effect on o-DCB oxidation.

An accurate mass database and a method based on ultra high performance liquid chromatography-electrostatic field orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap HRMS) were developed. These were applied in the screening and identification of illegally added medicines in herbal tea. Based on investigations, 167 medicines were selected to build an accurate MS database; these medicines included antipyretic analgesics, glucocorticoids, antibiotics, and antihistamines, among other categories. The database was established using Orbitrap HRMS and TraceFinder software. The database carried information on all selected compounds, including the molecular formula, accurate mass of precursor ions and fragment ions, retention time, and mass spectra. The samples were ultrasonically extracted with a 50% (v/v) methanol aqueous solution. The extracted solutions were separated using a Waters XBrigde BEH C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 2.5 µm). As the mobile phases, 0.1% (v/v) formic acid aqueous solution and acetonitrile containing 0.1% (v/v) formic acid were used, with gradient elution. The sample solutions were analyzed by Orbitrap HRMS in the full-scan MS and data-dependent MS/MS acquisition modes (Full MS/dd-MS2). Positive and negative polarity data were simultaneously acquired. Some parameters were optimized to increase the peak intensity and sensitivity of all compounds. The resolutions in the full-MS scan and dd-MS2 scan were set to 70000 and 17500, respectively. In the full-MS mode, scanning was performed in the range of m/z 100 to 1000. In the MS/MS mode, the normalized collision energy (NEC) was set to 20%, 40%, and 60% for each compound. The inclusion list was not used during the measurement, and the dynamic exclusion time was set to 10.0 s. The loop count was set to 5. After acquiring the sample data with these conditions using Orbitrap MS, they were imported into TraceFinder software, through which the sample information was extracted and automatically matched with the information on compounds in the MS database. Screening and identification were conducted by comparing the retention times as well as the exact masses of precursor ions and fragment ions that were experimentally measured. If the errors between the experimentally and theoretically obtained masses of the precursor ions were below 5×10-6 and the deviations in retention times were less than 20 s, then suspicious positive compounds might be identified. Furthermore, if such compounds possess more than one similar fragment ion with a mass tolerance below 5×10-6, and exhibit similar ion distributions in the MS/MS profiles (compared to those in the database), they could be confirmed to be the same. The validation result showed that all compounds had good linear relationships, with correlation coefficients (r) greater than 0.99. Because pefloxacin, norfloxacin, desloratadine, astemizole and clindamycin had background interference, the method was not suitable for their quantification. Following experiments using three spiked concentrations, the recoveries of the rest 162 compounds were found to be in the range of 66.4%-118.1%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs, n=6), in the range of 0.1%-16.1%. When the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.2 mg/kg, 83 compounds were detected, while when the LOD was 1.0 mg/kg, 167 compounds were detected. All compounds were matched successfully to the standard added sample with the MS database in TraceFinder software. To lower the likelihood of false positive and false negative results, a quality control method was recommended. The method was applied to analyze 245 herbal tea samples, among which 12 positive samples were detected. Thirteen positive compounds were found, including acetaminophen, diclofenac sodium, chlorpheniramine, brompheniramine, dexamethasone, dexamethasone 21-acetate, prednisone, prednisone 21-acetate, metronidazole, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, amantadine, and dextromethorphan. In particular, amantadine, dextromethorphan, brompheniramine, and ciprofloxacin were newly detected, compared to standard methods. The developed method is rapid and accurate, and will be useful in the high-throughput screening of illegally added medicines in herbal tea.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the feasibility of using human cadavers to demonstrate enzymatic burn debridement, as a training aid for clinical staff. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single, fresh-frozen human cadaver was used. Prior consent had been given. Burns were created by flame and scalding. Unburned control sites were also assessed. Nexobrid® enzymatic burn debridement paste was applied to all sites, in adherence to the local clinical protocol for treating burned patients. After removal of Nexobrid®, wounds were assessed to determine if the cadaveric tissue appeared similar to what would be expected in living burned patients and whether the technique could be viable for training of burn care staff. RESULTS: Nexobrid® had a very similar effect upon burned cadaveric skin to what would have been expected in living burned skin. Burns of partial thickness burn depth and full thickness burn depth were debrided and could be clearly identified. CONCLUSIONS: Fresh-frozen human cadaveric tissue is a valid means of provision of training in the technique of enzymatic burn debridement. This finding was unexpected and shows that our understanding of the mechanism of action of Nexobrid® is incomplete.

A cost-effective and highly efficient electrolyte with a wide electrochemical window, high reversibility of Mg plating/stripping, non-/low-corrosivity, good compatibility with cathode materials, and tolerance of trace water and impurity is crucial for the commercialization of rechargeable magnesium batteries. In this work, a novel boron-centered non-nucleophilic electrolyte that meets all the above requirements is prepared via a facile and economic approach from the raw materials B(TFE)3/MgCl2/CrCl3/Mg (BMCM). The as-prepared BMCM electrolyte is mainly composed of tetracoordinated anions [B(TFE)4]- and solvated cations [Mg2(µ-Cl)2(DME)4]2+. The BMCM electrolyte demonstrates attractive electrochemical performance, with a low overpotential (∼139 mV), a high Coulombic efficiency (∼97%), a high anodic stability (∼3.5 V vs Mg/Mg2+), and a long-term (more than 500 h) cycling stability. Moreover, BMCM shows good compatibility with the CuS cathode material. The CuS|BMCM|Mg full cell delivers a discharge specific capacity of 231 mAh g-1 (at 56 mA g-1), which can retain ∼88% even after 100 cycles. Importantly, the BMCM electrolyte is cost-effective and tolerant of trace impurity and water, which has great potential to be commercialized. This work is expected to promote the development of practical rechargeable magnesium batteries.

As a member of chlorophenolic compounds, 2-chlorohydroquinone (H2QCl) has been widely used as intermediates in various chemical industries and leaded to serious threat on the environment. It is urgent to develop simple and robust analytical method for sensitive and selective determination of H2QCl. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a promising photoluminescence nanomaterial, have gained sufficient concern as optical sensors owing to their outstanding photochemical properties. In this work, nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were successfully synthesized by a simple secondary hydrothermal method and applied as a fluorescent probe for the quantitation of H2QCl. A new fluorescence region centered at excitation wavelength of 310 nm and emission wavelength of 390 nm appeared after nitrogen doping. It was found that the N-CQDs exhibited a high selectivity towards H2QCl with sensitive fluorescence response and the fluorescence quenching of N-CQDs was linear with the concentration of H2QCl in the range of 30-90 µM (Y = 0.0049X + 0.1255, R2 = 0.996). This is the first time that the dual role of excitation light was observed in the fluorescence detection system. The ultraviolet light acted as not only the excitation energy source for N-CQDs photoluminescence, but also the light source for photolysis of H2QCl. In the detection process, H2QCl was degraded to p-benzoquinone by light, and then the CQDs combined with p-benzoquinone through Michael addition reaction under the action of doped nitrogen. The electron transfer from N-CQDs to the linked p-benzoquinone caused the quenching of fluorescence originated from the edge state of N-CQDs. Furthermore, this established method can be applied for the quantitative determination of H2QCl in environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries between 94.31 and 105.51%.
