BACKGROUND: Excessive or inappropriate use of social media has been linked to disruptions in regular work, well-being, mental health, and overall reduction of quality of life. However, a limited number of studies documenting the impact of social media on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are available globally. AIM: This study aimed to explore the perceived social media needs and their impact on the quality of life among the adult population of various selected countries. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional, quantitative design and analytical study utilized an online survey disseminated from November to December 2021. RESULTS: A total of 6689 respondents from ten countries participated in the study. The largest number of respondents was from Malaysia (23.9%), followed by Bangladesh (15.5%), Georgia (14.8%), and Turkey (12.2%). The prevalence of social media users was over 90% in Austria, Georgia, Myanmar, Nigeria, and the Philippines. The majority of social media users were from the 18-24 age group. Multiple regression analysis showed that higher education level was positively correlated with all four domains of WHOQoL. In addition, the psychological health domain of quality of life was positively associated in all countries. Predictors among Social Media Needs, Affective Needs (ß = -0.07), and Social Integrative Needs (ß = 0.09) were significantly associated with psychological health. CONCLUSION: The study illuminates the positive correlation between higher education levels and improved life quality among social media users, highlighting an opportunity for policymakers to craft education-focused initiatives that enhance well-being. The findings call for strategic interventions to safeguard the mental health of the global social media populace, particularly those at educational and health disadvantages.

BACKGROUND: Surface remineralization is recommended for the management of active non-cavitated interproximal carious lesions in primary teeth. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a recently recognized category of materials called bioactive restorative materials can be used for remineralization. This study aimed to evaluate the release of fluoride (F), calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) ions from Predicta® Bioactive Bulk-fill composite compared with EQUIA Forte® and Filtek™ Z350 and to determine the remineralization effect of these 3 restorative materials on adjacent initial interproximal enamel carious lesions. METHODS: The release of F, Ca and P ions from 3 groups ((n = 10/group) (Group 1- Predicta®, Group 2- EQUIA Forte® and Group 3- Filtek™ Z350)) was determined at 1st, 4th, 7th and 14th days. After creating artificial carious lesions, human enamel samples were randomly assigned into 3 groups (n = 13/group) which were placed in contact with occluso-proximal restorative materials and exposed to a 14-day pH cycling period. Surface microhardness was determined using a Knoop microhardness assay at baseline, after artificial carious lesions formation and after pH cycling. The difference in the percentage of surface microhardness recovery (%SMHR) among groups was compared. Mineral deposition was analyzed with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and the enamel surface morphology was evaluated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Kruskal-Wallis's test with Dunn's post hoc test and one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test were used for data analysis. RESULTS: EQUIA Forte® released the highest cumulative amount of F and P ions, followed by Predicta® and Filtek™ Z350. Predicta® released higher amount of Ca ions than EQUIA Forte® and Filtek™ Z350. Predicta® demonstrated the highest %SMHR, followed by EQUIA Forte® and Filtek™ Z350. There was a significant difference in the %SMHR between Predicta® and Filtek™ Z350 (p < 0.05). However, EQUIA Forte® demonstrated the highest fluoride content, followed by Predicta® and Filtek™ Z350. The SEM images of EQUIA Forte® and Predicta® revealed the greater mineral deposition. CONCLUSION: Predicta® demonstrated a marked increase in surface microhardness and fluoride content of adjacent initial interproximal enamel carious lesions in primary molars compared with Filtek™ Z350. Predicta® is an alternative restorative material to remineralize adjacent initial interproximal enamel carious lesions in primary molars, especially in high-risk caries patients.

BACKGROUND: Clinical collaboration between spine professionals in high-income countries (HICs) and low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) may provide improvements in the accessibility, efficacy, and safety of global spine care. Currently, the scope and effectiveness of these collaborations remain unclear. In this review, we describe the literature on the current state of these partnerships to provide a framework for exploring future best practices. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were queried for articles on spine-based clinical partnerships between HICs and LMICs published between 2000 and March 10, 2023. This search yielded 1528 total publications. After systematic screening, nineteen articles were included in the final review. RESULTS: All published partnerships involved direct clinical care and 13/19 included clinical training of local providers. Most of the published collaborations reviewed involved one of four major global outreach organizations with the majority of sites in Africa. Participants were primarily physicians and physicians-in-training. Only 5/19 studies reported needs assessments prior to starting their partnerships. Articles were split on evaluative focus, with some only evaluating clinical outcomes and some evaluating the nature of the partnership itself. CONCLUSIONS: Published studies on spine-focused clinical partnerships between HICs and LMICs remain scarce. Those that are published often do not report needs assessments and formal metrics to evaluate the efficacy of such partnerships. Toward improving the quality of spine care globally, we recommend an increase in the quality and quantity of published studies involving clinical collaborations between HICs and LICs, with careful attention to reporting early needs assessments and evaluation strategies.

Introduction: Visual seizure is one of the rare complications of poorly controlled chronic hyperglycaemia. This condition can be debilitating for patients. Early recognition and careful control of hyperglycaemia is vital. Case description: A middle-aged female was found collapsed at her home after missing insulin for several days. She was found to have diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA) and she was started on treatment for DKA. She reported visual hallucinations in the right side of her visual field for a week. Further assessment with EEG and brain MRI suggested an occipital seizure consistent with metabolic disturbances. She was initially started on antiepileptic medication. After strict diabetes control, her symptoms resolved, and she no longer needed antiepileptic treatment. Conclusion: Experiencing diabetes-related seizures can be terrifying both for patients and their family. Early recognition and quick control of hyperglycaemia is important in treating these patients. LEARNING POINTS: Hyperglycaemia can present with different symptoms of osmotic imbalance including seizures.All patients presenting with visual seizures should be investigates for all metabolic abnormalities including hyperglycaemia.Correction of hyperglycaemia can improve clinical symptoms as well as physical and psychological well-being of patients.

Agrifood sector mechanization service providers (MSP) and mechanization equipment retailers (MER) have increasingly become the providers of mechanical technologies for smallholders in developing countries, including Myanmar. Evidence remains scarce on the effects of COVID-19 on these MSPs and MERs. This study provides insights into the effects of COVID-19 restrictions on MSPs and MERs in Myanmar, using unbalanced panel data from five rounds of phone surveys. Direct responses to COVID-19 involving movement restrictions, market disruptions, and growing financial challenges had significant negative effects on revenue prospects, service delivery, and sales of machines and equipment. Negative revenue prospects during a particular period can further hurt revenue prospects in subsequent periods. This is consistent with the hypotheses that MSPs who had incurred high sunk costs in machines can engage in more desperate and, thus, potentially suboptimal business practices to recover the sunk cost. Overall, policies to minimize movement restrictions and various financial struggles and mitigate any pessimism at the beginning of the production season are all important to make sure MSPs and MERs continue to function effectively under COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Heterozygous activating mutations in KCNJ11 cause both permanent and transient neonatal diabetes. A minority of patients also have neurological features. Early genetic diagnosis has important therapeutic implications as treatment with sulfonylurea provides good metabolic control and exerts a protective effect on neuromuscular function. CASE PRESENTATION: A term female infant with normal birth weight (2.73 kg, z-score: -1.69) was admitted to the Neonatal Unit at Addenbrookes Hospital. She had been antenatally diagnosed with KCNJ11 mutation-R201C inherited from her glibenclamide-treated mother who continued sulfonylurea treatment throughout pregnancy. A continuous glucose-monitoring system inserted at 20 h of age showed progressive rise of blood glucose concentrations, prompting treatment with glibenclamide on day 2 of life. Initial attempts to treat with an extemporaneous solution of glibenclamide (starting dose 0.2 mg/kg/day) resulted in inconsistent response and significant hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia. A licenced liquid formulation of glibenclamide (AMGLIDIA) at a starting dose of 0.05 mg/kg/day was used with stabilization of blood glucose profile within 24 h. Other than a mild transient elevation in transaminase, treatment was well tolerated. At most recent review (age 12 months), the patient remains well with age-appropriate neurodevelopment. Overall glucose control is reasonable with estimated HbA1c of 7.6% (59.9 mmol/mol). CONCLUSION: Early postnatal glibenclamide treatment of insulin-naive patients with KATP-dependent neonatal diabetes is safe, provides good metabolic control, and has a potential protective effect on neurological function. The formulation of the medicine needs to be carefully considered in the context of the very small doses required in this age group.

BACKGROUND: Persistent hypoglycemia is common in the newborn and is associated with poor neurodevelopmental outcome. Adequate monitoring is critical in prevention, but is dependent on frequent, often hourly blood sampling. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is increasingly being used in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus, but use in neonatology remains limited. We aimed to introduce real-time CGM to provide insights into patterns of dysglycemia and to support the management of persistent neonatal hypoglycemia. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective study of real-time CGM use over a 4-year period in babies with persistent hypoglycemia. RESULTS: CGMs were inserted in 14 babies: 8 term and 6 preterm infants, 9 with evidence of congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI). A total of 224 days of data was collected demonstrating marked fluctuations in glucose levels in babies with CHI, with a higher sensor glucose SD (1.52 ±â€…0.79 mmol/L vs 0.77 ±â€…0.22 mmol/L) in infants with CHI compared with preterm infants. A total of 1254 paired glucose values (CGM and blood) were compared and gave a mean absolute relative difference of 11%. CONCLUSION: CGM highlighted the challenges of preventing hypoglycemia in these babies when using intermittent blood glucose levels alone, and the potential application of CGM as an adjunct to clinical care.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 pandemic reached a public health emergency status of international concern. The impacts and events associated with this were associated with adverse psychological impacts among the general public globally. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of psychological distress and to identify predictors associated with psychological distress due to the COVID-19 pandemic among the population in Myanmar. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from March to April 2020 among adults, 18 years old and above, who reside in Myanmar through a structured questionnaire distributed in social media platforms. Univariate and Bivariate analyses were used to estimate the prevalence of COVID-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index (CPDI) symptoms and to test the associations between CPDI and the exposure variables. Logistic Regression Analysis was done to identify significant predictors of distress. RESULTS: There were 530 participants in this study.37.4% of them did not have psychological distress,55.6% experienced mild to moderate psychological distress, and 7% experienced severe psychological distress due to COVID-19 pandemic. Simple and Multiple Logistic Regression Analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with psychological distress due to COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: It was shown that the self-employed group and age group older than 45 years old had more psychological distress than others. However, Buddhists and people from the capital city had less distress than other religions and districts. This study recommends the government to develop better strategies for self-employed groups, elders, and the poor for a support, relief, and resettlement of their ruined status.

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is one of the most common inherited cardiac channelopathies with a prevalence of 1:2000. The condition can be congenital or acquired with 15 recognized genotypes; the most common subtypes are LQTS 1, 2, and 3 making up to 85%-90% of the cases. LQTS is characterized by delayed ventricular cardiomyocyte repolarization manifesting on the surface electrocardiogram (EKG) by a prolonged corrected QT (QTc) interval. The mainstay of treatment for this condition involves in part or combination medical therapy via ß-blockers as first-line (or other anti-arrhythmic), left cardiac sympathectomy, or implantable cardiac defibrillator placement. Given the high rate of adverse cardiac events (ACE) or sudden cardiac death (SCD) in this population of patients with this disease, this review seeks to highlight the genotype-specific treatment consensus in ß-blocker therapy of the most common subtypes. A database search of PubMed, PMC, and Medline was conducted to ascertain the most recent data in the last five years on the management of LQTS types 1-3 and the role of ß-blockers in reducing ACE in these types. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were adhered to in the study selection, and selected studies focused on humans, written in the English Language, and within the last five years of LQTS subtypes 1, 2, and 3. Eleven relevant studies were selected after considering inclusion criteria, exclusion criteria, and quality appraisal within the last five years, focusing on ß-blocker selection directed based on the subtypes of LQTS. Two meta-analyses, one cohort study, and eight reviews provided significant data that non-selective ß-blockers unequivocally are of benefit in these LQTS types. Summary of findings suggested nadolol followed by propranolol yields the best results in LQTS 1, while nadolol would yield the best effect in LQTS 2 and 3.

Peritoneal metastasis is associated with poor prognosis, with studies in the literature reporting the survival of peritoneal metastasis without treatment to be three to six months. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has shown positive outcomes by improving the prognosis in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies. This systematic review of randomized controlled trials was done to determine the prophylactic role of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in preventing and controlling peritoneal metastasis gastrointestinal origin. Randomized controlled trials published between January 2019 to June 2021 were included. The databases used were MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE (Ovid), and the Cochrane library. Cochrane handbook for systematic review of intervention was used to assess the risk of bias in included trials. The results were reported using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of five trials met the inclusion criteria. Two studies were on patients with gastric cancer, and the other three studies were on patients with colorectal cancer. HIPEC was given to a total of 116 gastric cancer patients and 308 colorectal cancer patients. In all the included studies on patients with gastric cancer, the peritoneal recurrence-free survival was significantly higher in the group that received HIPEC. There was no significant improvement in peritoneal-free survival in patients with colorectal cancer who received HIPEC. HIPEC appears to be effective in preventing peritoneal metastasis in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer without minimal postoperative complications. However, in patients with advanced colorectal malignancy, HIPEC does not seem to play a crucial role in preventing and controlling peritoneal metastasis.

Latest advancements in science lead to drastic improvements in patient health care. Techniques and technology evolved in surgery over the years have resulted in the improvement of patient outcomes by leaps and bounds. Open surgeries previously done for procedures like appendectomy and cholecystectomy evolved into laparoscopic minimally invasive procedures. Such procedures pose few challenges to the surgeons, like lack of tissue feedback and fulcrum effect of the abdominal wall. But training surgeons for such an advanced skill is still following conventional methods. These procedures can be effectively trained using Virtual Reality (VR), which can simulate operations outside the operating room (OR). To maximize the outcomes of VR training, knowledge on various strategies affecting the skills acquisition and retention in VR training is essential. This review collected information from PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library (CENTRAL) databases. Data from the previous ten years are included in the review. This included documents, clinical trials, meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials, reviews, systematic reviews, letters to editors, and grey literature. After an advanced Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) search, we got 59,532 results, and after the application of filters, 189 results showed up. Out of these, studies that were not exclusively relevant to the use of VR in laparoscopic surgery were manually excluded, and a total of 35 articles were included in the study. VR is found to be an excellent training modality with promising outcomes. It helps the surgeons perform the surgery accurately at a faster pace and improves confidence and multitasking ability in OR. Instructor feedback from mentors and deliberate practice of trainees, and early introduction of haptics in VR resulted in the most effective outcomes of the VR training. Box trainers are also compared with VR trainers as they are the cheaper modalities of training. However, this area needs more research to conclude if box trainers can act as a cheaper alternative to VR training providing similar outcomes.

Pilonidal sinus is an acquired condition caused by irritation to the hair follicles at the natal cleft, presenting with an abscess or chronic infection. It is prevalent in young adults affecting their productive lifestyle with morbidities. There are varieties of treatment options; however, there is no consensus yet for the ideal procedure. Less invasive procedures have evolved to replace the traditional surgical techniques, which cannot significantly reduce the risks of recurrence and wound complications despite extensive surgeries. We aimed to assess the effect of fibrin glue as a primary treatment after cleaning the sinus in pilonidal sinus disease. We searched for articles from PubMed®, Ovid MEDLINE®, Ovid EMBASE®, and Cochrane CENTRAL. Six studies that included 336 patients in total were analyzed. Fibrin glue treatment in these studies reported a quicker return to normal activities postoperatively, a low rate of infection, and an acceptable rate of recurrence. Thus, fibrin glue seems beneficial in the management of pilonidal disease. However, further high-quality studies are essential to support and confirm this evidence. Future research should also evaluate its cost and implications in the ambulatory service.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent one of the most important complications occurring postoperatively following surgical procedures. The SSI incidence is higher following gastrointestinal (GI) surgeries compared to any other surgery. It contributes to the majority of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing GI surgeries. The accepted practice worldwide for the prevention and control of SSIs is providing antimicrobial prophylaxis. The appropriate antimicrobial and dose are chosen depending on the microbial flora, complications, and patient risk factors. The objective of this review was to determine the sufficient number of prophylactic antimicrobial doses that would be efficacious and safe in controlling the SSIs following GI oncological surgeries. Single-dose antimicrobial prophylaxis has shown the same efficacy as the multiple-dose antimicrobial regimen in controlling SSIs in esophageal, gastric, and colorectal surgeries. The advantages of a single-dose regimen include less chance of emergence of resistance, less chance for allergies or toxicity, and less cost. The addition of metronidazole with single-dose antimicrobial prophylaxis in colorectal surgery should be considered due to its beneficial effect in further reducing infections. Further randomized controlled trials are needed for the literature to determine the efficacy and safety of single-dose antimicrobial prophylaxis in patients undergoing esophageal and colorectal surgeries. In addition, studies are required to determine the individual effectiveness of metronidazole in controlling SSIs in colorectal surgeries.

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Breast cancer is still a major cause of morbidity and mortality among women despite all the available diagnostic and treatment modalities. The gut microbiota has drawn keen interest as an additional environmental risk factor in breast cancer, especially in sporadic cases. This article explores factors that disrupt the normal gut microbial composition and the role of gut microbial dysbiosis in the development of breast cancer. We finalized 40 relevant articles after searching Pubmed and Google Scholar using regular keywords and the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) strategy. Gut microbiota dysbiosis has been shown to play a role in the development of breast cancer via estrogen-dependent mechanisms and non-estrogen-dependent mechanisms involving the production of microbial-derived metabolites, immune regulation, and effects on DNA. The gut microbiota influence estrogen metabolism hence estrogen levels. The metabolites that have demonstrated anticancer properties include lithocholic acid, butyrate, and cadaverine. New approaches targeting the gut microbiota have come up and may yield new advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer. They include the use of prebiotics, probiotics, and hormone supplements to restore normobiosis in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as the "Silent Epidemic," is a growing devastating global health problem estimated to affect millions of individuals yearly worldwide with little public recognition, leading to many individuals living with a TBI-related disability. TBI has been associated with up to five times increase in the risk of dementia among multiple neurologic complications compared with the general population. Several therapies, including statins, have been tried and showed promising benefits for TBI patients. In this systematic review, we evaluated the recent literature that tested the role of statins on neurological and cognitive outcomes such as Alzheimer's Disease and non-Alzheimer's dementia in survivors of TBI with various severities. We conducted a systematic search on PubMed, PubMed Central, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. MeSH terms and keywords were used to search for full-text randomized clinical trials (RCTs), cross-sectional, case-control, cohort studies, systematic reviews, and animal studies published in English. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and the articles were subjected to quality appraisal by two reviewers. Our data search retrieved 4948 nonduplicate records. A total of 18 studies were included - nine human studies, and nine animal laboratory trials - after meeting inclusion, eligibility, and quality assessment criteria. Simvastatin was the most tested statin, and the oral route of administration was the most used. Eight human studies showed a significant neuroprotective effect and improvement in the cognitive outcomes, including dementia. Four randomized clinical trials with 296 patients showed that statins play a neuroprotective role and improve cognitive outcomes through different mechanisms, especially their anti-inflammatory effect; they were shown to lower tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Also, they decreased axonal injury and cortical thickness changes. In addition, four cohort studies compared a total of 867.953 patients. One study showed a decrease in mortality in statin-treated patients (p=0.05). Another study showed a reduction in the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (RR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.73-0.81), while one study showed a decreased risk of dementia after concussions by 6.13% (p=0.001). On the other hand, one cohort study showed no significant difference with the use of statins. In eight animal trials, statins showed a significant neuroprotective effect, improved cognitive outcomes, and neurological functions. Different molecular and cellular mechanisms were suggested, including anti-inflammatory effects, promoting angiogenesis, neurogenesis, increasing cerebral blood flow, neurite outgrowth, promoting the proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells, and reducing axonal injury. On the contrary, one study showed no benefit and actual adverse effect on the cognitive outcome. Most of the studies showed promising neuroprotective effects of statins in TBI patients. Cognitive outcomes, especially dementia, were improved. However, the optimal therapeutic protocol is still unknown. Thus, statins are candidates for more advanced studies to test their efficacy in preventing cognitive decline in patients with TBI.

The normal function of mitochondria in the hepatic parenchyma can be disrupted by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) damage during liver transplantation. The pathology of these insults involves various cellular and molecular steps of events that have been extensively researched over decades but are yet to provide complete answers. This review discusses the brief mechanism of the pathophysiology following ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) and various targeting strategies that could result in improved graft function. The traditional treatment for end-stage liver disease i.e., liver transplantation, has been complicated by I/R damage. The poor graft function or primary non-function found after liver transplantation may be due to mitochondrial dysfunction following IRI. As a result, determining the sequence of incidents that cause human hepatic mitochondrial dysfunction is crucial; it might contribute to further improvements in the outcome of liver transplantation. Early discovery of novel prognostic factors involved in IRI could serve as a primary endpoint for predicting the outcome of liver grafts as well as promoting the early implementation of novel IRI-prevention strategies. In this review, recent developments in the study of mitochondrial dysfunction and I/R damage are discussed, specifically those concerning liver transplantation. Furthermore, we also explore different pharmacological therapeutic methods that may be used and their connections to mitochondrion-related processes and goals. Although significant progress has been made in our understanding of IRI and mitochondrial dysfunction, further research is needed to elucidate the cellular and molecular pathways underlying these processes to help identify biomarkers that can aid donor organ evaluation.

Soluble iron from atmospheric aerosol particles has toxicological effects on ambient environment due to their oxidative potential. However, the dissolution process and factors affecting this process are poorly understood. In this study, by solid phase characterization and aqueous dissolution experiments, we investigated the influence of acids, including HCl, H2SO4 and HNO3, and H+ concentration on iron dissolution rate, solubility and speciation of iron in chlorite, illite, kaolinite and pyrite. The dissolution of iron-bearing clay minerals, i.e. chlorite, illite and kaolinite, was a multi-stage process with a rapid rate in the initial stage and then decreasing rate in the following stages. In contrast, the regularly crystallized pyrite proceeded with an extremely rapid dissolution rate at very beginning and then remained almost constant. In all acid solutions, the dissolution rate was in the order of pyrite > illite > chlorite > kaolinite. H2SO4 was stronger than HCl and HNO3 in the destruction of mineral structures to release iron, while HNO3 dissolved more iron in pyrite (FeS2). High H+ concentration easily destroyed the mineral structures to release the structural or interlayer iron, whereas low H+ concentration increased the proportion of Fe (II) in clay minerals. Non-linear fitting of continuous dissolution models showed that the iron dissolution rates and iron redox speciation as functions of time were well predicted, with r2 > 0.99 for chlorite and illite, and r2 > 0.96 for kaolinite. Oxidative potential analysis proved that the dissolved iron possessed a considerable potential to generate reactive oxygen species.

Atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS) are not only an unresolved mixture of macro-organic compounds but also powerful chelating agents in atmospheric particulate matters (PMs); impacting on both the properties of aerosol particles and health effects by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Currently, the interests of HULIS are intensively shifting to the investigations of HULIS-metal synergic effects and kinetics modeling studies, as well as the development of HULIS quantification, findings of possible HULIS sources and generation of ROS from HULIS. In light of HULIS studies, we comprehensively review the current knowledge of isolation and physicochemical characterization of HULIS from atmospheric samples as well as HULIS properties (hygroscopic, surface activity, and colloidal) and possible sources of HULIS. This review mainly highlights the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from PMs, HULIS and transition metals, especially iron. This review also summarized the mechanism of iron-organic complexation and recent findings of OH formation from HULIS-metal complexes. This review will be helpful to carry out the modeling studies that concern with HULIS-transition metals and for further studies in the generation of ROS from HULIS-metal complexes.

As an accumulation of solid organic and inorganic pollutant particles on outdoor ground surfaces, road dust is an important carrier of heavy metal contaminants and can be a valuable medium for characterizing urban environmental quality. Because the dusts can be an important source of atmospheric particles and take impact on human health, the aim of this study described in detail the mineralogical characteristics, morphology, and heavy metal content of road dust from Xuanwei and Fuyuan, locations with high lung cancer incidence. Our results show that the average concentrations of heavy metals in road dust were higher than their background values. Higher concentrations of heavy metals were found in the magnetic fractions (MFs) than in the non-magnetic fractions (NMFs). Magnetic measurements revealed high magnetic susceptibility values in the road dust samples, and the dominant magnetic carrier was magnetite. The magnetic grains were predominantly pseudo-single domain, multi-domain, and coarse-grained stable single domains (coarse SSD) in size. SEM/XRD analysis identified two groups of magnetic particles: spherules and angular/aggregate particles. Hazard index (HI) values for adults exposure to road dust samples, including MF, Bulk, and NMF, in both areas were lower or close to safe levels, while HI values for childhood exposure to magnetic fractions in both areas were very close or higher than safe levels. Cancer risks from road dust exposure in both areas were in the acceptable value range.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children <5 years of age in Myanmar. The purpose of this analysis is to report from the sentinel surveillance system for rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE), which collects information on the epidemiology and circulating genotypes to assess the disease burden and support vaccine introduction in Myanmar. METHODS: Prospective, active surveillance for RVGE-associated hospitalizations was conducted during 2009 -2014 at Yangon Children's Hospital. Stool samples collected from children <5 years of age admitted for AGE were screened for rotavirus antigen by ELISA (ProSpecT™ Rotavirus, OXOID-UK). G and P genotyping was performed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Overall, 1860/3724 (49.9%) of stool samples tested positive for rotavirus, ranging from 42-56% of hospitalized AGE cases each year. RVGE was predominant in the 6-11 months age group 889/1860 (47.8%) as compared with 12-23 months 633/1860 (34.0%), 0-5 months 226/1860 (12.2 %) and 24-59 months 112/1860 (6.0%). RVGE occurred in a seasonal cycle with peak occurrence in the cold and dry months (November to February), accounting for 65.3% (1151/1763) among enrolled AGE cases. Vomiting (84.1% Vs 67.9%; P < .01), fever (84.5% Vs 75.6%; P < .01) and dehydration (78% Vs 69%; P < .01) were more frequently observed in RVGE than non-RVGE. Genotyping revealed that G1P[8] was predominant from January to June 2009, G12P[8] was predominant throughout 2009-2012 which was replaced in 2012-2013 by G2P[4] and changed again to G1P[8] in 2013-2014 and G9P[8] in late 2014. CONCLUSIONS: Rotavirus is accounting for approximately half of AGE-associated hospitalizations among children <5 years of age in Myanmar. There is immense diversity of rotavirus strains similar to that reported previously for other countries in the region. Information gained from this surveillance system highlights consideration of rotavirus vaccine introduction into this target population.
