RESUMEN

Environmentally acceptable and renewably sourced flame retardants are in demand. Recent studies have shown that the incorporation of the biopolymer lignin into a polymer can improve its ability to form a char layer upon heating to a high temperature. Char layer formation is a central component of flame-retardant activity. The covalent modification of lignin is an established technique that is being applied to the development of potential flame retardants. In this study, four novel modified lignins were prepared, and their char-forming abilities were assessed using thermogravimetric analysis. The lignin was obtained from date palm wood using a butanosolv pretreatment. The removal of the majority of the ester groups from this heavily acylated lignin was achieved via alkaline hydrolysis. The subsequent modification of the lignin involved the incorporation of an azide functional group and copper-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions. These reactions enabled novel organophosphorus heterocycles to be linked to the lignin. Our preliminary results suggest that the modified lignins had improved char-forming activity compared to the controls. 31P and HSQC NMR and small-molecule X-ray crystallography were used to analyse the prepared compounds and lignins.

RESUMEN

The reactivity between bis(pyridin-2-yl)diselane o Py2 Se2 and ditellane o Py2 Te2 (L1 and L2, respectively; o Py=pyridyn-2-yl) and I2 /Br2 is discussed. Single-crystal structure analysis revealed that the reaction of L1 with I2 yielded [(HL1+ )(I- )⋅5/2I2 ]∞ (1) in which monoprotonated cations HL1+ template a self-assembled infinite pseudo-cubic polyiodide 3D-network, while the reaction with Br2 yielded the dibromide Ho PySeII Br2 (2). The oxidation of L2 with I2 and Br2 yielded the compounds Ho PyTeII I2 (3) and Ho PyTeIV Br4 (6), respectively, whose structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis. FT-Raman spectroscopy measurements are consistent with a 3c-4e description of all the X-Ch-X three-body systems (Ch=Se, Te; X=Br, I) in compounds 2, 3, Ho PyTeII Br2 (5), and 6. The structural and spectroscopic observations are supported by extensive theoretical calculations carried out at the DFT level that were employed to study the electronic structure of the investigated compounds, the thermodynamic aspects of their formation, and the role of noncovalent σ-hole halogen and chalcogen bonds in the X⋅⋅⋅X, X⋅⋅⋅Ch and Ch⋅⋅⋅Ch interactions evidenced structurally.

RESUMEN

A series of peri-substituted acenaphthene-based phosphine selenoether bidentate ligands Acenap(iPr2P)(SeAr) (L1-L4, Acenap = acenaphthene-5,6-diyl, Ar = Ph, mesityl, 2,4,6-trisopropylphenyl and supermesityl) were prepared. The rigid acenaphthene framework induces a forced overlap of the phosphine and selenoether lone pairs, resulting in a large magnitude of through-space 4JPSe coupling, ranging from 452 to 545 Hz. These rigid ligands L1-L4 were used to prepare a series of selected late d-block metals, mercury, and borane complexes, which were characterized, including by multinuclear NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Lewis acidic motifs (BH3, Mo(CO)4, Ag+, PdCl2, PtCl2, and HgCl2) bridge the two donor atoms (P and Se) in all but one case in the solid-state structures. Where the bridging motif contained NMR-active nuclei (11B, 107Ag, 109Ag, 195Pt, and 199Hg), JPM and JSeM couplings are observed directly, in addition to the altered JPSe in the respective NMR spectra. The solution NMR data are correlated with single-crystal diffraction data, and in the case of mercury(II) complexes, they are also correlated with the solid-state NMR data and coupling deformation density calculations. The latter indicate that the through-space interaction dominates in free L1, while in the L1HgCl2 complex, the main coupling pathway is via the metal atom and not through the carbon framework of the acenaphthene ring system.

RESUMEN

While thiocarbonyl-stabilised phosphonium ylides generally react upon flash vacuum pyrolysis by the extrusion of Ph3PS to give alkynes in an analogous way to their carbonyl-stabilised analogues, two examples with a hydrogen atom on the ylidic carbon are found to undergo a quite different process. The net transfer of a phenyl group from P to S gives (Z)-configured 1-diphenylphosphino-2-(phenylsulfenyl)alkenes in a novel isomerisation process via intermediate λ5-1,2-thiaphosphetes. These prove to be versatile hemilabile ligands with a total of seven complexes prepared involving five different transition metals. Four of these are characterised by X-ray diffraction with two involving the bidentate ligand forming a five-membered ring metallacycle and two with the ligand coordinating to the metal only through phosphorus.

RESUMEN

The reaction of the complex [Au(phen)Br2](PF6) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) with molecular dibromine afforded {[Au(phen)Br2](Br3)}∞ (1). Single crystal diffraction analysis showed that the [Au(phen)Br2]+ complex cations were bridged by asymmetric tribromide anions to form infinite zig-zag chains featuring the motif ···Au-Br···Br-Br-Br···Au-Br···Br-Br-Br···. The complex cation played an unprecedented halogen bonding (XB) donor role engaging type-I and type-II XB noncovalent interactions of comparable strength with symmetry related [Br3]- anions. A network of hydrogen bonds connects parallel chains in an infinite 2D network, contributing to the layered supramolecular architecture. DFT calculations allowed clarification of the nature of the XB interactions, showing the interplay between orbital mixing, analyzed at the NBO level, and electrostatic contribution, explored based on the molecular potential energy (MEP) maps of the interacting synthons.

RESUMEN

A series of phosphorus-arsenic peri-substituted acenaphthene species have been isolated and fully characterised, including single crystal X-ray diffraction. Reactions of EBr3 (E = P, As) with iPr2PAcenapLi (Acenap = acenaphthene-5,6-diyl) afforded the thermally stable peri-substitution supported donor-acceptor complexes, iPr2PAcenapEBr23 and 4. Both complexes show a strong P→E dative interaction, as observed by X-ray crystallography and 31P NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations indicated the unusual As∙∙∙As contact (3.50 Å) observed in the solid state structure of 4 results from dispersion forces rather than metallic interactions. Incorporation of the excess AsBr3 in the crystal structure of 3 promotes the formation of the ion separated species [iPr2PAcenapAsBr]+Br- 5. A decomposition product 6 containing the rare [As6Br8]2- heterocubane dianion was isolated and characterised crystallographically. The reaction between iPr2PAcenapLi and EtAsI2 afforded tertiary arsine (BrAcenap)2AsEt 7, which was subsequently lithiated and reacted with PhPCl2 and Ph2PCl to afford cyclic PhP(Acenap)2AsEt 8 and acyclic EtAs(AcenapPPh2)2 9.

RESUMEN

An improved approach for the preparation of 2,4-bis(phenyl)-1,3-diselena-2,4-diphosphetane-2,4-diselenide (Woollins' reagent) is described. Reacting dichlorophenylphosphine with Na2Se which was in situ prepared from the reaction of elemental selenium and metal sodium in the presence of naphthalene in refluxing tetrahydrofuran generated Woollins' reagent with excellent purity and a yield of up to 96.4%.

RESUMEN

The reaction of the bis(1,2-dithiolene) complex [Pd(Me2timdt)2] (1; Me2timdt•- = monoreduced 1,3-dimethyl-2,4,5-trithioxoimidazolidine) with Br2 yielded the complex [Pd(Me2timdt)Br2] (2), which was reacted with Na2mnt (mnt2- = 1,2-dicyano-1,2-ethylenedithiolate) to give the neutral mixed-ligand complex [Pd(Me2timdt)(mnt)] (3). Complex 3 shows an intense solvatochromic near-infrared (NIR) absorption band falling between 955 nm in DMF and 1060 nm in CHCl3 (ε = 10700 M-1 cm-1 in CHCl3). DFT calculations were used to elucidate the electronic structure of complex 3 and to compare it with those of the corresponding homoleptic complexes 1 and [Pd(mnt)2] (4). An in-depth comparison of calculated and experimental structural and vis-NIR spectroscopic properties, supported by IEF-PCM TD-DFT and NBO calculations, clearly points to a description of 3 as a dithione-dithiolato complex. For the first time, a broken-symmetry (BS) procedure for the evaluation of the singlet diradical character (DC) of heteroleptic bis(1,2-dithiolene) complexes has been developed and applied to complex 3. The DC, predominant for 1 (nDC = 55.4%), provides a remarkable contribution to the electronic structures of the ground states of both 3 and 4, showing a diradicaloid nature (nDC = 24.9% and 27.5%, respectively). The computational approach developed here clearly shows that a rational design of the DC of bis(1,2-ditiolene) metal complexes, and hence their linear and nonlinear optical properties, can be achieved by a proper choice of the 1,2-dithiolene ligands based on their electronic structure.

RESUMEN

Woollins' reagent, [2,4-bis(phenyl)-1,3-diselenadiphosphetane-2,4-diselenide], serving as a selenating-reductive cycloaddition reagent, reacts with nonconjugated amido-Schiff bases to give the corresponding six-membered 1,3,4-selenadiazoles via a ring-expansion accompanied by an additional selenation/cyclization to the imine bond and C=O group; meanwhile, under the same reaction conditions, the selenation of conjugated amido-Schiff bases leads to a series of fused heterocycles with two five-membered rings. Eight single-crystal X-ray structures confirming the formation of these five- and six-membered heterocycles are discussed.

RESUMEN

A series of acenaphthene species with a diisopropylphosphino group and a variety of bismuth functionalities in the peri positions were synthesized and fully characterized, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The majority of the reported species feature a relatively rare interpnictogen P-Bi bond. The series includes the phosphine-bismuthine Acenap(PiPr2)(BiPh2) (2; Acenap = acenaphthene-5,6-diyl), which was subjected to a fluorodearylation reaction to produce Acenap(PiPr2)(BiPhX) (5-8 and 10; X = BF4-, Cl, Br, I, SPh), displaying varying degrees of ionicity. The geminally bis(acenaphthyl)-substituted [Acenap(PiPr2)]2BiPh (3) shows a large through-space coupling of 17.8 Hz, formally 8TSJPP. Coupling deformation density calculations confirm the double through-space coupling pathway, in which the P and Bi lone pairs mediate communication between the two 31P nuclei. Several synthetic routes toward the phosphine-diiodobismuthine Acenap(PiPr2)(BiI2) (9) have been investigated; however, the purity of this, surprisingly thermally stable potential synthon, remains poor.

RESUMEN

Reacting aroyl chlorides with an equivalent of potassium selenocyanate, followed by treating with an equivalent of 1,2,4-tri-tert-butylaniline at room temperature, resulted in the expected selenoureas and unusual diselenazoles. The selenation of selenourea by Woollins Reagent gave a new selenoformamide. Nucleophilic addition of selenoureas with acyl bromides led to the formation of new carbamimidoselenoates rather than the expected 1,3-selenazoles. The novel compounds prepared were characterised spectroscopically and crystallographically.

RESUMEN

A series of P-E-containing heterocycles (E=chalcogen) with aromatic backbones were synthesised and characterised by single-crystal and powder XRD, microanalysis and mass spectrometry. Solution- and solid-state 31 P and 77 Se NMR spectroscopy revealed significant differences between the NMR parameters in solution and in the solid state, related to conformational changes in the molecules. Many compounds were shown to exhibit a number of different polymorphic structures (identified by single-crystal XRD), although the bulk material studied by solid-state NMR spectroscopy often contained just one major polymorph. For the unoxidised heterocycles, the presence of weak intermolecular J couplings was also investigated by DFT calculations.

RESUMEN

A series of representative late d-block metal complexes bearing a rigid bis(phosphine) ligand, iPr2P-Ace-PPh2 (L, Ace = acenaphthene-5,6-diyl), was prepared and fully characterized by various techniques, including multinuclear NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The heteroleptic nature of the peri-substituted ligand L allows for the direct observation of the JPP couplings in the 31P{1H} NMR spectra. Magnitudes of JPP are correlated with the identity and geometry of the metal and the distortions of the ligand L. The forced overlap of the phosphine lone pairs due to the constraints imposed by the rigid acenaphthene skeleton in L results in a large 4 JPP of 180 Hz. Sequestration of the lone pairs, either via oxidation of the phosphine or via metal chelation, results in distinct changes in the magnitude of JPP. For tetrahedral d10 complexes ([LMCl2], M = Zn, Cd, Hg), the JPP is comparable to or larger than (193-309 Hz) that in free ligand L, although the P···P separation in these complexes is increased by ca. 0.4 Å (compare to free ligand L). The magnitude of JPP diminishes to 26-117 Hz in square planar d8 complexes ([LMX2], M = Ni, Pd, Pt; X = Cl, Br) and the octahedral Mo0 complex ([LMo(CO)4], 33 Hz). Coupling deformation density calculations indicate the through-space interaction dominates in free L, while in metal complexes the main coupling pathway is via the metal atom.

RESUMEN

A compartmental Schiff base ligand, 2,2'-((((((2-hydroxypropane-1,3-diyl)bis(oxy))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(methylene))bis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(4-bromophenol) (H3LBr) and its complexes with cobalt(ii), copper(ii) and zinc(ii) including, [Co(HLBr)] (1), [Cu2(LBr)(µ-1,3-OAc)]·MeOH (2) and [Zn(HLBr)] (3) were prepared using template synthesis and characterised by elemental analysis, FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the structure of complexes 1 and 3 the metal atom has a MN2O2 environment with tetrahedral geometry while complex 2 has a binuclear structure with a MNO4 environment and square planar geometry around the copper atom. The ability of all compounds to interact with the nine biomacromolecules (BRAF kinase, CatB, DNA gyrase, HDAC7, rHA, RNR, TrxR, TS and Top II) are investigated by docking calculations. For examination of the docking results, the in vitro activities of eight compounds against the human leukemia cell line K562 was investigated by evaluation of IC50 values and mode of cell death (apoptosis).

RESUMEN

2-(2-(2-Hydroxyethylamino)ethylamino)cyclohexanol (HEAC) and copper and zinc complexes, [Cu(HEAC)Cl]Cl (1), [Cu(HEAC)Br]Br (2), [Zn(HEAC)Cl2] (3), were prepared and identified by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Also nanoparticles of 1-3 were prepared for anticancer studies by ultrasonic irradiation. Particle size and morphology of the nano particles are investigated by PXRD and SEM, respectively. X-ray analysis revealed that the ionic complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural. In the structure of complexes 1 and 2, the metal atom has a CuN2O2X (X: Cl (1), Br (2)) environment with square-pyramidal geometry, containing the tetradentate N2O2-donor HEAC. The bond length of the axial position in the square-pyramidal geometry of 1 and 2 is elongated. Complex 3 has a ZnN2OCl2 environment with trigonal bipyramidal geometry around the zinc atom in which the HEAC acts as mer-N2O-donor. The ability of HEAC and nano particles 1-3 to interact with the nine biomacromolecules (BRAF kinase, CatB, DNA gyrase, HDAC7, rHA, RNR, TrxR, TS and Top II) are investigated by docking calculations. For examination of the docking results, the in vitro activities of four compounds against the human leukemia cell line K562 were investigated by evaluation of IC50 values and mode of cell death (apoptosis). The thermodynamic stability of the compounds along with the charge distribution pattern were studied by DFT and NBO analysis, respectively.

RESUMEN

Here, we highlight the ability of peri-substitution chemistry to promote a series of unique P-P/P-As coupling reactions, which proceed with concomitant C-H bond formation. This dealkanative reactivity represents an interesting and unexpected expansion to the established family of main-group dehydrocoupling reactions. These transformations are exceptionally clean, proceeding essentially quantitatively at relatively low temperatures (70-140 °C), with 100% diastereoselectivity in the products. The reaction appears to be radical in nature, with the addition of small quantities of a radical initiator (azobis(isobutyronitrile)) increasing the rate dramatically, as well as altering the apparent order of reaction. DFT calculations suggest that the reaction involves dissociation of a phosphorus centered radical (stabilized by the peri-backbone) to the P-P coupled product and a free propyl radical, which carries the chain. This unusual reaction demonstrates the powerful effect that geometric constraints, in this case a rigid scaffold, can have on the reactivity of main group species, an area of research that is gaining increasing prominence in recent years.
