RESUMEN

Background: The Barthel Index (BI) is used to standardize the grading of assessments for clinical needs, insurance support, and long-term care resource allocation in China. However, its psychometric properties among nursing home residents remain unclear. Therefore, this study aims to assess and modify the psychometric properties of BI in nursing home residents. Methods: A total of 1,402 individuals undergoing evaluation in a nursing home facility in China were included in this study from November 2021 to November 2022. Correlations between items were examined to identify the potential multicollinearity concerns. The unidimensional item response theory (IRT) was used to validate and modify the single structure of BI. Furthermore, the logistic regression/IRT hybrid DIF detection method was conducted to assess differential item functioning (DIF) between the dementia group and the normal group. Results: The pairing of items 5 ("bowl control") and 6 ("bladder control") revealed a local dependence issue, leading to their consolidation. Items 56 (bowel and bladder control) and 9 (mobility) both displayed poor fit indices and underwent category collapsing. Through the application of the generalized partial credit model, the adjusted scale displayed better fit indices, demonstrating a robust discriminative power (DC >1.5) and orderly thresholds. Furthermore, non-uniform DIF was identified in item 2 (bathing) between the dementia group and the normal group. Conclusion: The modified BI demonstrated favorable psychometric properties and proved to be suitable for evaluating nursing home residents experiencing moderate functional impairment, which may provide a precise evaluation for long-term care resource allocation. Future studies could explore integrating supplementary measurements, such as objective indices, to assess a broader spectrum of functional statuses to potentially enhance the limited precision width observed in BI.

RESUMEN

The development of antibiotic-loaded microneedles has been hindered for years by limited excipient options, restricted drug-loading space, poor microneedle formability, and short-term drug retention. Therefore, this study proposes a dissolving microneedle fabricated from the host-defense peptide ε-poly-l-lysine (EPL) as an antibacterial adjuvant system for delivering antibiotics. EPL serves not only as a major matrix material for the microneedle tips, but also as a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent that facilitates the intracellular accumulation of the antibiotic doxycycline (DOX) by increasing bacterial cell membrane permeability. Furthermore, the formation of physically crosslinked networks of EPL affords microneedle tips with improved formability, good mechanical properties, and amorphous nanoparticles (approximately 7.2 nm) of encapsulated DOX. As a result, a high total loading content of both antimicrobials up to 2319.1 µg/patch is achieved for efficient transdermal drug delivery. In a Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced deep cutaneous infection model, the EPL microneedles demonstrates potent and long-term effects by synergistically enhancing antibiotic activities and prolonging drug retention in infected lesions, resulting in remarkable therapeutic efficacy with 99.91 % (3.04 log) reduction in skin bacterial burden after a single administration. Overall, our study highlights the distinct advantages of EPL microneedles and their potential in clinical antibacterial practice when loaded with amorphous DOX nanoparticles.

RESUMEN

Some patients with heatstroke also experience intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). However, clinical case reports of heatstroke-induced ICH are rare. The risk factors for cerebral hemorrhage after heatstroke remain unknown. The present study evaluated the clinical characteristics and risk factors of patients with heatstroke-related ICH. In this retrospective observational study, we collected data on all ICHs after heatstroke occurred between 2012 and 2022. The characteristics of patients with heatstroke-induced ICH were described. The risk factors for cerebral hemorrhage after heatstroke were examined using logistic regression analysis. In total, 177 patients were included in this study, and 11 patients with ICH secondary to heatstroke were identified. Variables with P values of <.05 in univariate models, comparing the cerebral hemorrhage and control groups, included heatstroke cause, temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, vasopressor use, mechanical ventilation use, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II, total bilirubin, creatinine, platelet count, prothrombin time, procalcitonin, creatine kinase, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) occurrence, and DIC score. Multivariate logistic regression showed that heatstroke patients with higher DIC scores (odds ratio, 18.402, 95% confidence interval, 1.384-244.763, P = .027) and higher creatine kinase levels (odds ratio, 1.021, 95% confidence interval, 1.002-1.041, P = .033) were at a higher risk of developing ICH. The death rate was higher in the cerebral hemorrhage group than in the control group (P = .042). Heatstroke-related cerebral hemorrhage may be associated with elevated creatinine levels and DIC severity (International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis score) after heatstroke, and heatstroke with cerebral hemorrhage may accelerate death.

RESUMEN

Total glucosides picrorhizae rhizome (TGPR) is an innovative traditional Chinese medicine, which is a candidate drug for the treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). However, there is still lack of deep research on the behaviors of TGPR in vivo. In this study, a reliable, specific, and sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method has been constructed for simultaneous determination of picroside I, picroside II, vanillic acid, androsin, cinnamic acid and picroside IV, the major active constituents of TGPR, in rat various biological matrices (plasma, tissue, bile, urine and feces) using diphenhydramine hydrochloride and paeoniflorin as the internal standard. All biosamples were prepared using a simple protein precipitation with acetonitrile. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a waters UHPLC® HSS T3 (100×2.1 mm, 1.8 µm) column. The mobile phase consisted of methanol: acetonitrile1(1:1, V/V) and 0.5 mM ammonium formate in water, was employed to separate six components from endogenous interferences. The components were detected with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer using positive and negative ion multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The newly developed method was successfully applied to investigate the pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution and excretion of six components in rats. The pharmacokinetic results indicated that the six components in TGPR could be quickly absorbed and slowly eliminated and their bioavailability were less than 12.37%, which implied the poor absorption after intragastric dosing. For tissue distribution, the six components in TGPR were detected in liver and only androsin could penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Meanwhile, the excretion study demonstrated that vanillic acid was mostly excreted as prototype drugs and the remaining five components might be widely metabolized in vivo as the metabolites, the unconverted form was excreted mainly by feces route. The pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution and excretion characteristics of six bioactive components in TGPR were firstly revealed, which will provide references for further clinical application of TGPR as an anti-NASH drug.

RESUMEN

The dramatic changes in global climate on human health have been extremely severe. The immune disorder caused by low temperature and high humidity (LTHH) have become a severe public health issue. Clinically, Jingfang granule (JF) has the effect of dispelling cold and eliminating dampness, and is widely used in the treatment of cold caused by wind and cold, autoimmune diseases, and COVID-19 with cold-dampness stagnating in the lung pattern. Our study aims to elucidate the effect of JF on LTHH-induced immune disorders in mice as well as the underlying mechanisms. In this study, JF increased the spleen index, improved fecal character, repaired the intestinal barrier and alleviated intestinal inflammatory responses. Most importantly, JF ameliorated immune disorder in LTHH mice, which was manifested primarily by the significant increase in gdT, CD8+ Tcm, and CD8+ Tem cells, as well as the decrease in TH1, TH17, CD4+ Tem1, CD4+ Tem2, immature NK, mature NK cells, and M1-like macrophages. Interestingly, the JF treatment not only regulated the gut microbiota by decreasing the abundance of harmful bacteria, as well as up-regulating the abundance of beneficial bacteria, but also ameliorated the metabolic disorders by reversing the levels of fecal metabolites to normality. The results of the correlation analysis demonstrated a significant association among gut microbiota, fecal metabolites and immune cells. In addition, JF inhibited the TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway in LTHH mice. In conclusion, our results suggested that JF alleviated inflammation and immune disorders in LTHH mice by restoring gut microbiota and fecal metabolism.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare modified knotless transscleral suture fixation of intraocular lens (IOL) with traditional transscleral suture fixation for adolescents and young patients with congenital ectopia lentis (CEL). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 49 patients with CEL (60 eyes) who underwent surgery at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. Improvements based on knotless Z-suture fixation technique were made to form a modified knotless method, in which thicker 8-0 polypropylene sutures were used, and double parallel scleral grooves were constructed behind the limbus instead of triangular lamellar scleral flaps to cover suture stitches. Modified knotless transscleral fixation of IOL was conducted on 30 eyes, and the other 30 eyes underwent traditional transscleral fixation surgery. Pre- and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refractive error, astigmatism, other ocular parameters, and complications were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: For patients in the modified knotless group, the mean cylindrical refractive error and astigmatism at 1 month and 3 months postoperative were lower (all P < 0.05), and the mean IOL tilt degree was smaller at 3 months postoperative (3.21° ± 2.13° vs. 5.65° ± 3.66°, P = 0.032). The incidence of suture exposure in the modified knotless group was also lower than in the controls (0 vs. 16.7%, P = 0.026). No group differences were observed in mean BCVA, spherical equivalent, or other ocular biometric parameters between groups. CONCLUSION: Modified knotless technique was a valid method to achieve optimal IOL position and reduce postoperative astigmatism for adolescents and young patients with CEL. It effectively reduced the incidence of knot-related complications, greatly improved the postoperative comfort, and achieved aesthetic benefits.

RESUMEN

Background: The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is involved in the expression of cocaine addictive phenotypes, including acquisition, extinction, and reinstatement. In the NAc, D1-medium spiny neurons (MSNs) encode cocaine reward, whereas D2-MSNs encode aversive responses in drug addiction. Glutamate receptor-interacting protein 1 (GRIP1) is known to be associated with cocaine addiction, but the role of GRIP1 in D1-MSNs and D2-MSNs of the NAc in cocaine acquisition and reinstatement remains unknown. Methods: A conditioned place preference apparatus was used to establish cocaine acquisition, extinction, and reinstatement in mouse models. GRIP1 expression was evaluated using Western blotting. Furthermore, GRIP1-siRNA and GRIP1 overexpression lentivirus were used to interfere with GRIP1 in the NAc. After the behavioral test, green fluorescent protein immunostaining of brain slices was used to detect spine density. Results: GRIP1 expression decreased during cocaine acquisition and reinstatement. GRIP1-siRNA enhanced cocaine-induced CPP behavior in acquisition and reinstatement and regulated associated spine plasticity. Importantly, the decreased GRIP1 expression that mediated cocaine acquisition and reinstatement was mainly driven by the interference of the GRIP1-GluA2 interaction in D1-MSNs and could be blocked by the interference of the GRIP1-GluA2 interaction in D2-MSNs. Interference with the GRIP1-GluA2 interaction in D1- and D2-MSNs decreased spine density in D1- and D2-MSNs, respectively. Conclusion: GRIP1 in D1- and D2-MSNs of the NAc differentially modulates cocaine acquisition and reinstatement. GRIP1 downregulation in D1-MSNs has a positive effect on cocaine acquisition and reinstatement, while GRIP1 downregulation in D2-MSNs has a negative effect. Additionally, GRIP1 downregulation in D1-MSNs plays a leading role in cocaine acquisition and reinstatement.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Misuse of disinfectants during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has led to several poisoning incidents. However, there are few clinical case reports on poisoning caused by improper mixing of household disinfectants. AIM: To summarize the clinical characteristics and treatment effects of chlorine poisoning caused by improper mixing of hypochlorite bleach with acidic cleaning agents.METHODSWe retrospectively analyzed baseline and clinical data, clinical symptoms, and treatment methods of seven patients with chlorine poisoning who were admitted to the National Army Poisoning Treatment Center. RESULTS: Among the seven patients, the average poisoning time (exposure to admission) was 57 h (4-240 h). All patients were involved in cleaning bathrooms. Chest computed tomography scans revealed bilateral lung effusions or inflammatory changes in five patients. The partial pressure of oxygen decreased in six patients, and respiratory failure occurred in one. Five patients had different degrees of increase in white blood cell count. Humidified oxygen therapy, non-invasive mechanical ventilation, anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, antioxidants, and antibiotics were administered for treatment. The average length of hospital stay was 7 d (4-9 d). All seven patients recovered and were discharged. CONCLUSION: Improper mixing of household disinfectants may cause damage to the respiratory system due to chlorine poisoning. Corticosteroids may improve lung exudation in severe cases, and symptomatic supportive treatment should be performed early.

RESUMEN

Monitoring and mapping agricultural cultural ecosystem services (CES) is essential, especially in areas with a sharp contradiction between agricultural land protection and urban development. Despite research assessing CES increasing exponentially in recent years, our knowledge of the CES of agricultural landscapes is still inadequate. This study used four types of agricultural landscapes in Hangzhou, China, as the study area, analyzed their CES spatial patterns, and explored their societal preferences by integrating the multi-sourced datasets, clustering algorithms, and Maxent model. The results indicated that hot spots of agricultural CES correspond to river valley plains, which were also easily vulnerable to urbanization. Moreover, we found that the CES level of paddy field and dry farmland were higher than tea garden and orchard. Based on the above spatial patterns of supply, demand, and flow of CES, we identified four groups of agricultural land by cluster analysis, distinguishing between significant, unimportant, little used, and potential CES. Further, our results showed that natural and human factors could explain societal preferences. This study can provide a valuable basis for stakeholders to develop balanced strategies by the aforementioned results.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The current study examines the mediating roles of resilience and self-efficacy and the moderating role of gender in the association between neuroticism and psychological distress in Chinese freshman nursing students (FNSs). METHODS: A total of 1220 FNSs were enrolled from the Be Resilient to Nursing Career (ChiCTR2000038693) Programme and the following instruments were administered to them: NEO Five-Factor Inventory, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. A moderated mediation analysis and a generalised additive model analysis were performed. RESULTS: The direct and indirect effects of neuroticism on psychological distress were significantly mediated by self-efficacy (B = 0.200, 95% CI 0.001 to 0.039), resilience (B = 0.021, 95% CI 0.007 to 0.038) and the interaction between self-efficacy and resilience (B = 0.016, 95% CI 0.005 to 0.028). The interactions between neuroticism and gender (ß = 0.102, 95% CI 0.001 to 0.203, p<0.05) and between resilience and gender were significant (ß = 0.160, 95% CI 0.045 to 0.275, p<0.01). A non-linear and positive association was confirmed between neuroticism and psychological distress. CONCLUSIONS: Self-efficacy and resilience significantly mediate the relationship between neuroticism and psychological distress. Gender moderates the relationships between neuroticism and resilience and between resilience and psychological distress.

RESUMEN

Populus euphratica Oliv. has a high tolerance for drought, salinity, and alkalinity. The main purpose of this study is to explore the effects of environments of different salinity intensities on endophytic community structure and the possible roles of endophytes in the tolerance of host plants. The characterization of endogenous bacteria in diversity has been investigated by using the Illumina high-throughput sequencing technique. The research showed that endophytic bacteria of P. euphratica in an extremely saline environment had low species diversity, especially in sap tissue. The dominant phyla in all groups were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Notably, Firmicutes (relative abundance >5%) was a different dominant phylum in the samples from the high-saline environment compared with the relatively low-saline-environment group. The linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis found that there were significant differences in different saline environments of Cytophagaceae (family), Rhodobacteraceae (family), and Rhodobacterales (order). These results indicated that the composition of the endogenous bacterial community was related to the growth environment of host plants. The predictive analysis of KEGG pathways and enzymes showed that the abundance of some enzymes and metabolic pathways of endophytes of P. euphratica increased with the increase of soil salinity, and most of the enzymes were related to energy metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism. These findings suggested that the endogenous bacteria of the host plant had different expression mechanisms under different degrees of stress, and this mechanism was very obvious in the distribution of endophytes, while the function of the endogenous bacteria needs to be further explored. IMPORTANCE Euphrates poplar (Populus euphratica Oliv.), as the only tree species that grows in the desert, has tenacious vitality with the characteristics of cold tolerance, drought tolerance, salt-alkali tolerance, and wind-sand resistance. P. euphratica has a long growth cycle and a high growth rate, which can break wind, fix sand, green the environment, and protect farmland, making it an important afforestation tree species in arid and semiarid areas. The area of P. euphratica in Xinjiang accounts for 91.1% of its area in China. Studying the endophytic bacteria of P. euphratica can give people a systematic understanding of it and the adaptability of the endogenous flora to the host and special environments. In this study, by analyzing the endophytic bacteria of P. euphratica in different saline-alkali regions of Xinjiang, it was found that the bacteria in different tissues of P. euphratica changed with the change of soil salinity. Especially in the sap tissue of P. euphratica under extremely high salinity, the diversity of endogenous bacteria was significantly lower than that in other tissues. These differential bacteria under different salinities were mostly related to the stress resistance of themselves and the host. Not only that, we also selected a strain of Bacillus with high stress resistance from the tissues of P. euphratica, which can survive under the extreme conditions of 10% NaCl and pH 11. We obtained a genome completion map of this strain, named it Bacillus haynesii P19 (GenBank accession no. PRJNA648288), and tried to use it for fermentation but in a different work, so as to develop it into a promising industrial fermentation chassis bacterium. Therefore, this study was of great significance for the understanding of endophytic bacteria in P. euphratica and the acquisition of extremophilic microbial resources.

RESUMEN

With the increased emergence and threat of multi-drug resistant microorganisms, MXenes have become not only an emerging class of two-dimensional functional nanomaterials, but also potential nanomedicines (i.e., antimicrobial agents) that deserve further exploration. Very recently, Ti3C2 MXene was observed to offer a unique membrane-disruption effect and superior light-to-heat conversion efficiency, but its antibacterial property remains unsatisfactory due to poor MXene-bacteria interactions, low photothermal therapy efficiency, and occurrence of bacterial rebound in vivo. Herein, the cationic antibiotic ciprofloxacin (Cip) is combined with Ti3C2 MXene, and a hybrid hydrogel was constructed by incorporating Cip-Ti3C2 nanocomposites into the network structure of a Cip-loaded hydrogels to effectively trap and kill bacteria. We found that the Cip-Ti3C2 nanocomposites achieved an impressive in vitro bactericidal efficiency of >99.99999% (7.03 log10) for the inhibition of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) by combining chemotherapy with photothermal therapy. In an MRSA-induced murine abscess model, the hybrid hydrogel simultaneously achieved high-efficiency sterilization and long-term inhibition effects, avoiding the rebound of bacteria after photothermal therapy, and thus maximized the in vivo therapeutic efficacy of Ti3C2 MXene-based systems. Overall, this work provides a strategy for efficiently combating localized bacterial infection by rationally designing MXene-based hybrid hydrogels. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Two-dimensional Ti3C2 MXene was recently regarded as a promising functional nanomaterial, however, its antibacterial applications are limited by the poor MXene-bacteria interactions, low photothermal therapy efficiency, and the occurrence of bacterial rebound in vivo. This work aims to construct a Ti3C2 MXene-based hybrid hydrogel for chemo-photothermal therapy and enhance the antimicrobial performance via a combination of the high-efficiency sterilization of ciprofloxacin-Ti3C2 nanocomposites with the long-term inhibition effect of ciprofloxacin hydrogel. The present study provides an example of efficient MXene-based antimicrobials to treat localized bacterial infection such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced skin abscess.

RESUMEN

@#Objective To explore the effect of resilience in the relationship between workplace bullying (WPB) and professional identity among nursing interns. Methods A total of 292 nursing interns from six grade A hospitals were selected as the research subjects using convenience sampling method. The WPB,professional identity, resilience, perceived stress and coping styles were investigated by the Negative Acts Questionnaire Revised, the Professional Identity Questionnaire for nurse students, the Chinese version of 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. Results The scores of WPB and perceived stress were negatively correlated with those of professional identity, resilience, and positive coping styles(PCS)[Spearman correlation coefficients(rS )were −0.354,−0.316,−0.388,−0.488,−0.636 and −0.478,all P<0.01]. There was a negative correlation between negative coping styles(NCS)and professional identity(rS =−0.117,P=0.046). The scores of resilience and professional identity were positively correlated with that of PCS(rS were 0.539 and 0.482,both P<0.01). There was a positive correlation between resilience and professional identity (rS =0.567,P<0.01). The scores of WPB and perceived stress were positively correlated with that of NCS(rS were 0.350 and 0.281,both P<0.01). There was a positive correlation between WPB and perceived stress(rS =0.419,P<0.01). The scores of resilience and PCS were not correlated with that of NCS(both P>0.05). Resilience played a mediating role between WPB and professional identity. The interaction between WPB and NCS could predict the professional identity and resilience of nursing interns(standardized regression coefficient were 0.31 and 0.17,both P<0.01). Conclusion WPB can directly or indirectly affect nursing interns’professional identity through resilience, and NCS plays a moderating role on the direct effect of WPB and professional identity, and the relationship between WPB and resilience.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess a new method to measure the distance of the needle passage from the ciliary sulcus to the corneal limbus anterior border (CTC) in eyes with ectopia lentis directly in vivo via endoscopy and to further evaluate the correlations among the CTC, age, automated horizontal white-to-white distance (WTW), and ocular axial length (AL). METHODS: The WTW and AL were measured using an optical biometer. An intraocular endoscope was used during transscleral suture fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses to identify the true location of the ciliary sulcus. Linear regression analysis was used to assess the correlation between the CTC and other ocular biological parameters, including age, WTW, and AL. RESULTS: Thirty eyes of 30 children with ectopia lentis were evaluated. A statistically significant correlation was found between age and the CTC. The CTC could be predicted by the equation CTC = 0.1313 × Age + 0.9666. No statistically significant correlations were found between CTC and WTW, CTC and AL, WTW and AL, or WTW and age. CONCLUSION: Endoscopy is useful for precisely suturing intraocular lens haptics in the real ciliary sulcus. Age can be used as an equivalent parameter for prediction of the true ciliary sulcus location.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate the ocular characteristics of Chinese patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of ocular parameters in distinguishing MFS from ectopia lentis. METHODS: A total of 103 patients (103 eyes) with ectopia lentis from 13 provinces and 47 cities were recruited from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, from June 2017 to June 2019. Ghent-2 criteria were used, as they are the gold standard diagnostic criteria for MFS. Ocular parameters, such as flat keratometry (Kf), steep keratometry (Ks), mean keratometry (Km), corneal astigmatism (AST), axial length (AL), white-to-white corneal diameter (WTW), central corneal thickness (CCT), and axial length/curvature radius (AL/CR), were recorded. Diagnostic analyses based on various combinations of parameters to differentiate MFS from ectopia lentis were made using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: The mean age of the 103 included patients was 10.25±9.67 (range: 3-48) years, and 66.02% were male. Km combined with CCT was found to have good sensitivity and specificity in the differential diagnosis of MFS from ectopia lentis; Km of 41.36 D and CCT of 537.32 mm were found to be the optimal cut-off points, representing a sensitivity of 89.8% and specificity of 68.7%. CONCLUSIONS: Special characteristics of ocular parameters were detected in MFS. Our findings indicate that ocular biologic parameters are valuable for the differential diagnosis of MFS from ectopia lentis. Km, combined with CCT, could be used as a screening tool for MFS.

RESUMEN

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are regarded as a class of promising materials for spintronic and ultrahigh-density storage devices. Tuning the magnetic dynamics of single-molecule magnets is a crucial challenge for chemists. Lanthanide ions are not only highly magnetically anisotropic but also highly sensitive to the changes in the coordination environments. We developed a feasible approach to understand parts of the magneto-structure correlations and propose to regulate the relaxation behaviors via rational design. A series of Co(II)-Dy(III)-Co(II) complexes were obtained using in situ synthesis; in this system of complexes, the relaxation dynamics can be greatly improved, accompanied with desolvation, via single-crystal to single-crystal transformation. The effective energy barrier can be increased from 293 cm(-1) (422 K) to 416 cm(-1) (600 K), and the tunneling relaxation time can be grown from 8.5 × 10(-4) s to 7.4 × 10(-2) s. These remarkable improvements are due to the change in the coordination environments of Dy(III) and Co(II). Ab initio calculations were performed to better understand the magnetic dynamics.

A record anisotropy barrier (319 cm(-1) ) for all d-f complexes was observed for a unique Fe(II) -Dy(III) -Fe(II) single-molecule magnet (SMM), which possesses two asymmetric and distorted Fe(II) ions and one quasi-D5h Dy(III) ion. The frozen magnetization of the Dy(III) ion leads to the decreased Fe(II) relaxation rates evident in the Mössbauer spectrum. Ab initio calculations suggest that tunneling is interrupted effectively thanks to the exchange doublets.
