RESUMEN

The neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) is a product of inorganic mercury (IHg) after microbial transformation. Yet it remains unclear whether microbial activity or IHg supply dominates Hg methylation in paddies, hotspots of MeHg formation. Here, we quantified the response of MeHg production to changes in microbial activity and Hg supply using 63 paddy soils under the common scenario of straw amendment, a globally prevalent agricultural practice. We demonstrate that the IHg supply is the limiting factor for Hg methylation in paddies. This is because IHg supply is generally low in soils and can largely be facilitated (by 336-747 %) by straw amendment. The generally high activities of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) do not limit Hg methylation, even though SRB have been validated as the predominant microbial Hg methylators in paddies in this study. These findings caution against the mobilization of legacy Hg triggered by human activities and climate change, resulting in increased MeHg production and the subsequent flux of this potent neurotoxin to our dining tables.

Aesthetic perception is a human instinct that is responsive to multimedia stimuli. Giving computers the ability to assess human sensory and perceptual experience of aesthetics is a well-recognized need for the intelligent design industry and multimedia intelligence study. In this work, we constructed a novel database for the aesthetic evaluation of design, using 2,918 images collected from the archives of two major design awards, and we also present a method of aesthetic evaluation that uses machine learning algorithms. Reviewers' ratings of the design works are set as the ground-truth annotations for the dataset. Furthermore, multiple image features are extracted and fused. The experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach. Primary screening using aesthetic computing can be an intelligent assistant for various design evaluations and can reduce misjudgment in art and design review due to visual aesthetic fatigue after a long period of viewing. The study of computational aesthetic evaluation can provide positive effect on the efficiency of design review, and it is of great significance to aesthetic recognition exploration and applications development.

Pharmaceuticals in surface waters have raised significant concern in recent years for their potential environmental effects. This study identified that at present a total of 477 substances (including 66 metabolites and transformation products) have been analyzed in European surface waters. Around 60% (284) of these compounds belonging to 16 different therapeutic groups were positively detected in one or more of 33 European countries. To conveniently and effectively prioritize potential high-risk compounds, an optimized method that considers the frequency of concentrations above predicted no effects levels was developed on the basis of the traditional method, and it was then used to identify and screen candidate priority pollutants in European surface waters. The results proved the feasibility and advantages of the optimized method. Pharmaceuticals detected in European surface waters were classified into 5 categories (high, moderate, endurable, negligible and safe) depending on their potential environmental effects and the distribution of pharmaceuticals. Circa 9% (45 out of 477) analyzed compounds showed a potential environmental risk to aquatic ecosystems. Among these 45 compounds, 12 compounds were indicated to have high environmental risk in aquatic environments, while 17 and 7 compounds showed moderate and small-scale environmental risks, respectively.
