RESUMEN

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the Xianling Gubao (XLGB) capsule alone and its combination therapy in primary osteoporosis (POP). Methods: Databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP, and SinoMed were searched from their inception to January 16, 2024, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the XLGB treatment for POP. A network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of multiple interventions in the treatment of POP. The Cochrane risk-of-bias tool was used to assess the quality of RCTs included in the meta-analysis. Software Stata (version 15.0) was used for statistical analysis. The surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) method was used to present the findings from this NMA numerically and graphically by ranking multiple interventions. Results: A total of 107 RCTs were included in the meta-analysis, involving 10,032 participants and 21 interventions. Meta-analysis showed that XLGB + calcium (Ca) + calcitonin (99.9 %) was the most desirable treatment option for improving clinical efficacy. XLGB + Ca + bisphosphonate (BP) was most effective for improving bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine, femoral neck BMD, and serum bone Gla protein (BGP). SUCRA values for improving these three outcome measures by XLGB + Ca + BP were 87.4 %, 77.2 %, and 84.3 %, respectively. XLGB + calcitonin was the optimal option in terms of safety evaluation and improving visual analogue scale (VAS), with the SUCRA values being 89.6 % and 94.9 %, respectively. Conclusions: The XLGB combination therapy is a desirable option for treating POP as it can effectively improve the therapeutic effects, BMD, and serum BGP, as well as relieve pain in patients with POP.

RESUMEN

Background: Ondansetron reduces the median effective dose (ED50) of prophylactic phenylephrine to prevent spinal-induced hypotension (SIH) during cesarean delivery. However, the exact dose response of phenylephrine in combination with prophylactic ondansetron for preventing SIH is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the dose-response of phenylephrine to prevent SIH in cesarean delivery when 4 mg of ondansetron was used as a preventive method. Methods: A total of 80 parturients were enrolled and divided randomly into four groups (n = 20 in each group) who received either 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, or 0.5 µg/kg/min of prophylactic phenylephrine. Ten minutes before the initiation of spinal induction, 4 mg prophylactic ondansetron was administered. The effective dose of prophylactic phenylephrine was defined as the dose required to prevent hypotension after the period of intrathecal injection and up to neonatal delivery. The ED50 and ED90 of prophylactic phenylephrine and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated using probit analysis. Results: The ED50 and ED90 for prophylactic phenylephrine to prevent SIH were 0.25 (95% CI, 0.15 to 0.30), and 0.45 (95% CI, 0.39 to 0.59) µg/kg/min, respectively. No significant differences were observed in the side effects and neonatal outcomes between the four groups. Conclusion: The administration of 4 mg of prophylactic ondansetron was associated with an ED50 of 0.25 (95% CI, 0.15~0.30) and ED90 of 0.45 (95% CI, 0.39~0.59) µg/kg/min for phenylephrine to prevent SIH.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The current study aimed to explore the associations of diet quality assessed by healthy eating index-2015 (HEI-2015) with risks of osteoporosis and low bone mineral density (BMD) among American postmenopausal women aged 50 years and older. Methods: Postmenopausal women aged 50 years and older in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 through 2018 were included in the final sample. Analysis of variance and Rao-Scott adjusted chi-square tests were used to compare the characteristics across tertiles of HEI-2015. Univariate and multivariate weighted logistic regression models were employed to explore the associations of HEI-2015 tertiles and continuous HEI-2015 with the risks of osteoporosis and low BMD. Nonlinear dose-response associations were evaluated using weighted restricted cubic spline analyses, and the contributions of various HEI-2015 components were assessed using weighted quantile sum regression models. Results: The final sample included 3,421 postmenopausal women aged 50 years and older representative for approximately 28.38 million non-institutionalized U.S. postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis prevalence decreased with HEI-2015 tertiles while the prevalence of low BMD showed no significant decrease. Compared with postmenopausal women in the first tertile of HEI-2015, those with the second (OR: 0.57, 95%CI: 0.38-0.84) and third (OR: 0.48, 95%CI: 0.29-0.78) HEI-2015 tertiles were associated with reduced osteoporosis risk after multivariate adjustments, but no significant association of HEI-2015 with the risk of BMD was identified. Furthermore, similar effects were confirmed in the sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses and interaction effects. Moreover, significant nonlinear associations were observed between HEI-2015 with osteoporosis risk, and total vegetables, refined grains and greens and beans demonstrated the strongest protective effect among HEI-2015 components against osteoporosis. Conclusions: This study strongly suggests the significant negative associations of HEI-2015 with osteoporosis risk in American postmenopausal women. These findings highlight the importance of adherence to the dietary guidelines for Americans in reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

RESUMEN

Background: Previous studies have explored the median effective concentration (EC50) of ropivacaine for labor epidural analgesia in parturients with obesity. However, the clinical relevance of the 90% effective concentration (EC90) remains unclear. This study aimed to determine and compare the dose-response curve of epidural ropivacaine for labor analgesia between parturients with and without obesity. Methods: Parturients were divided into two groups based on body mass index (BMI): group N, consisting of parturients with BMI <30 kg/m2, and group O, consisting of parturients with BMI >30 kg/m2. Within each group, the patients were randomized to receive one of five concentrations (0.0375%, 0.075%, 0.1125%, 0.15%, or 0.1875%) of epidural ropivacaine for labor analgesia. Analgesia was induced with a loading dose of 15 mL of the assigned concentration. Visual analogue scale (VAS) scores were recorded at baseline and 30 min post-dose to calculate the response (%) using the formula [(baseline VAS pain score-VAS pain score at 30 min)/baseline VAS pain score] ×100%. The EC50 and EC90 values were determined via nonlinear regression analysis. Results: The EC50 and EC90 values of ropivacaine were 0.061% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.056%-0.066%) and 0.177% (95% CI, 0.152%-0.206%) in group N and 0.056% (95% CI, 0.051%-0.061%) and 0.161% (95% CI, 0.138%-0.187%) in group O, respectively. No significant differences were observed in the EC50 and EC90 values between the two groups (p-values = 0.121 and 0.351, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, within the parameters of this study, our findings suggest that obesity, characterized by a mean BMI value of 30.9, does not significantly influence the EC50 and EC90 values of epidural ropivacaine for labor analgesia. Further investigations are warranted to elucidate the dose-response relationship between ropivacaine and obesity with higher BMI values. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a leading cause of respiratory failure, with substantial attributable morbidity and mortality. The small animal models that are currently used for ARDS do not fully manifest all of the pathological hallmarks of human patients, which hampers both the studies of disease mechanism and drug development. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether the phenotypic changes of primate-like tree shrews in response to a one-hit lipopolysaccharides (LPS) injury resemble human ARDS features. METHODS: LPS was administered to tree shrews through intratracheal instillation; then, the animals underwent CT or PET/CT imaging to examine the changes in the structure and function of the whole lung. The lung histology was analyzed by H&E staining and immunohistochemical staining of inflammatory cells. RESULTS: Results demonstrated that tree shrews exhibited an average survival time of 3-5 days after LPS insult, as well as an obvious symptom of dyspnea before death. The ratios of PaO2 to FiO2 (P/F ratio) were close to those of moderate ARDS in humans. CT imaging showed that the scope of the lung injury in tree shrews after LPS treatment were extensive. PET/CT imaging with 18F-FDG displayed an obvious inflammatory infiltration. Histological analysis detected the formation of a hyaline membrane, which is usually present in human ARDS. CONCLUSION: This study established a lung injury model with a primate-like small animal model and confirmed that they have similar features to human ARDS, which might provide a valuable tool for translational research.

RESUMEN

The knowledge of dynamic trend in soil heavy metal contamination and associated risk is important for soil pollution prevention, safe utilization and early warning of soil environmental quality and ecological risk. In this study, a modified integrated risk index (NIRI) was adopted to evaluate ecological risk in agricultural soil in Wenzhou with 70 samples, which is located in the southeast of China. In addition, two scenarios with different metal fluxes (optimistic and default scenario) were constructed to predict future dynamic trend of metal concentrations. Results showed the agricultural soil was mainly contaminated by Cd and Pb. The NIRI indicated moderate to considerable risk in most sites and Cd posed the greatest contribution to NIRI value. Besides, higher risk was determined in paddy soil than that in vegetable. Scenario simulation results revealed general declining trend in optimistic scenario while increasing trend in default scenario for metal concentration. However, exceedance varied with prediction period, soil types and metals. Ecological risk probability showed similar trend with metal concentration, indicating significant shift to higher risk level in default scenario while insignificant decrease in optimistic scenario. The proposed scenario simulation results provide reference to support soil quality improvement and risk management.

RESUMEN

Given the global prevalence of soil heavy metal contamination, knowledge concerning of soil environmental quality assessment, pollution area identification and source apportionment is critical for implementation of soil pollution prevention and safe utilization strategies. In this study, soil static environmental capacity (QI) for heavy metals was selected to evaluate pollution risks in agricultural soils of Wenzhou, southeast China. Combined with geostatistical methods, the pollution area was identified along with uncertainty analysis. Potential sources were quantitatively apportioned using a positive matrix factorization model (PMF). Results showed that agricultural soils in this study were mainly contaminated by Cd and Pb based on both Nemerow and QI indices. The environmental capacity assessment found more than 90% areas were identified as polluted soils for Qi-Zn, Qi-Cd and Qi-Pb, with minor uncertain areas. Cu was identified as having a high proportion of uncertain pollution area status, which was similar to the results of the integrated environmental capacity for all metals. PMF results indicated that industrial discharge, agrochemicals and parent material accounted for 32.1%, 32.2% and 35.7% of heavy metal accumulation in soils, respectively. Implementation of strict policies to reduce anthropogenic source emissions and remediate soil pollution are crucial to minimize metal pollution inputs, improve agricultural soil quality and enhance food safety.

RESUMEN

Objective: This study aimed to explore the association of the oxidative balance score (OBS) with total abdominal fat mass (TAFM) and visceral adipose tissue mass (VATM) percentages among young and middle-aged U.S. adults. Methods: Young and middle-aged adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018 were included. Analysis of variance and Rao-Scott adjusted chi-square tests were used to compare the characteristics across quartiles of OBS. Univariate and multivariate weighted logistic regression models were employed to explore the relationship between OBS and the risks of high TAFM or high VATM percentage in the general population and subgroups, while the interaction effects were tested with a likelihood test. Weighted restricted cubic spline analyses were utilized to assess the non-linear association of OBS with TAFM and VATM percentages. Results: The final sample included 8,734 young and middle-aged non-institutionalized U.S. adults representing 134.7 million adults. Compared with adults in the first quartile of OBS, those with higher OBS were less likely to have a high TAFM percentage; the ORs and 95% CI for adults in the second, third, and highest quartiles of OBS were 0.70 (0.53-0.94), 0.49 (0.36-0.60), and 0.25 (0.18-0.36), respectively. Similar trends were observed in the association between OBS and VATM percentages. Moreover, similar effects were confirmed in the sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses according to demographic characteristics. Regarding the OBS subclass, higher dietary OBS and lifestyle OBS were also correlated with decreased ORs of high TAFM and VATM percentages. Conclusion: This study strongly suggests that higher OBS, as well as higher dietary OBS and lifestyle OBS, are significantly correlated with lower risks of abdominal obesity and visceral fat accumulation. The findings highlight the importance of an antioxidant-rich diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in reducing the risks.

RESUMEN

Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship of metal exposure and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among US adults and adolescents. Methods: Participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES 2011 ~ 2012) were included. Multiple logistic regression models were used to explore the associations between metal exposure and LTBI. A total of 5,248 adults and 1,860 adolescents were included in the present analysis. Results: For adults, we only found a positive association between total mercury and LTBI (OR: 1.411; 95% CI: 1.164 ~ 1.710) when used as a continuous variable. Compared with Q1, Q4 increased the prevalence of LTBI (2.303; 1.455 ~ 3.644) when used as a quartile. The OR of total mercury and LTBI was higher among females (1.517; 1.009 ~ 2.279), individuals aged 45 ~ 64 (1.457; 1.060 ~ 2.002), and non-Hispanic White individuals (1.773; 1.316 ~ 2.388). A relationship was observed among only participants with obesity (1.553; 1.040 ~ 2.319) or underweight (1.380; 1.076 ~ 1.771), with college or above (1.645; 1.184 ~ 2.286), with PIR > 3.0 (1.701; 1.217 ~ 2.376), reported smoking (1.535; 1.235 ~ 1.907) and drinking (1.464; 1.232 ~ 1.739). For adolescents, blood manganese was positively associated with LTBI. The OR and 95% CIs for each one-unit increase in the log-transformed level of blood manganese with LTBI were 9.954 (1.389 ~ 71.344). Conclusion: Significant associations were observed in girls, aged ≥12 years and in the non-Hispanic white population. In conclusion, total mercury is associated with an increased prevalence of LTBI among adults and positive association between blood manganese and LTBI was observed among adolescents. Further studies should be conducted to verify the results and explore potential biological mechanisms.

RESUMEN

The critical prerequisite for the prevention and control of soil heavy metal (HM) pollution is the identification of factors that influence soil HM accumulation. The dominant factors have been individually identified and apportioned in existing studies. However, the accumulation of soil HMs results from a combination of multiple factors, and the influence of a single factor is less than the interaction of multiple parameters on soil HM pollution. In this study, we employed Geodetector to delve into the interaction effect of the influencing factors on the variations of soil HMs. We performed partial dependence plot to depict how these factors interact with each other to affect the HM content. We found that both individually and interactively, pH and agricultural activities significantly impact soil HM content. Except for Hg and Cu, the pairs with the most significant interaction effects all involve pH. For Pb, As and Zn, interaction with pH has the most significant driving force compared to the other factors. For Cu, Hg, and Ni, all environmental factor interactions increased their explanatory power, while for Cr, the single most significant driver decreased its driving power when interacting with other factors. Additionally, the study area exhibited a widespread prevalence of changes in HM concentration being governed by the synergistic effect of two factors. For the response of HMs to the interaction of pH and fertilizer, soil HM concentration was sensitive to pH, while fertilizer had less effect. These results provide a dependable method of investigating the interaction of environmental factors on soil HM content and put forth efficacious and potent tactical measures for soil HM pollution prevention and control based on the interaction type.

RESUMEN

Although the gut microbiota has been reported to influence osteoporosis risk, the individual species involved, and underlying mechanisms, remain largely unknown. We performed integrative analyses in a Chinese cohort of peri-/post-menopausal women with metagenomics/targeted metabolomics/whole-genome sequencing to identify novel microbiome-related biomarkers for bone health. Bacteroides vulgatus was found to be negatively associated with bone mineral density (BMD), which was validated in US white people. Serum valeric acid (VA), a microbiota derived metabolite, was positively associated with BMD and causally downregulated by B. vulgatus. Ovariectomized mice fed B. vulgatus demonstrated increased bone resorption and poorer bone micro-structure, while those fed VA demonstrated reduced bone resorption and better bone micro-structure. VA suppressed RELA protein production (pro-inflammatory), and enhanced IL10 mRNA expression (anti-inflammatory), leading to suppressed maturation of osteoclast-like cells and enhanced maturation of osteoblasts in vitro. The findings suggest that B. vulgatus and VA may represent promising targets for osteoporosis prevention/treatment.

RESUMEN

The intricate and multifaceted nature of soil system profoundly influences the highly complex and often nonlinear changes that soil heavy metals (HM) undergo. Spatial heterogeneity, location and scale variability, and the interaction and superposition among environmental drivers challenged researchers to determine the sophisticated nature of soil HMs changes at the regional scale. This study aims to develop a new method framework and selects Ningbo as the case study to apportion the environmental factors responsible for soil HMs pollution that include Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, As, Cu, Zn and Ni, focusing on nonlinearity and interaction. We harnessed the Random Forest model to apportion the environmental drivers of soil HM change. The directionality and shape of the nonlinear relationship between HMs and their individual contributors were derived by Partial Dependence Plots. The interactions of multiple drivers were quantitatively assessed by the Conditional Inference Tree. Our results demonstrated that soil HMs in the study area varied spatially. Soil HMs pollution was mitigated by natural factors and anthropogenic factors. The main influencing factors were pH, soil parent material type, enterprise activities, and agricultural application. The effects of some factors on soil HMs showed a monotonic linear trend, but some have apparent threshold effects. The direction of influence on soil HMs will shift when pH and phosphate fertilizer reach a specific value. The addition of enterprises in the area would rarely have an impact on the HMs pollution once it reached around 2 per km2 because of the industrial agglomeration. Soil HM concentrations were mainly from multi-pollutants and were governed by a combination of environmental factors. Our study provided managers and policymakers with site-specific and definite guidelines for preventing and controlling soil HM pollution.

RESUMEN

Importance: Albuminuria testing is crucial for guiding evidence-based treatments to mitigate chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and cardiovascular morbidity, but it is widely underutilized among persons with or at risk for CKD. Objective: To estimate the extent of albuminuria underdetection from lack of testing and evaluate its association with CKD treatment in a large US cohort of patients with hypertension or diabetes. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study examined adults with hypertension or diabetes, using data from the 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) and the Optum deidentified electronic health record (EHR) data set of diverse US health care organizations. Analyses were conducted from October 31, 2022, to May 19, 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures: Using NHANES as a nationally representative sample, a logistic regression model was developed to estimate albuminuria (urine albumin-creatinine ratio ≥30 mg/g). This model was then applied to active outpatients in the EHR from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2018. The prevalence of albuminuria among those with and without albuminuria testing during this period was estimated. A multivariable logistic regression was used to examine associations between having albuminuria testing and CKD therapies within the subsequent year (prescription for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor [ACEi] or angiotensin II receptor blocker [ARB], prescription for sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor [SGLT2i], and blood pressure control to less than 130/80 mm Hg or less than 140/90 mm Hg on the latest outpatient measure). Results: The total EHR study population included 192 108 patients (mean [SD] age, 60.3 [15.1] years; 185 589 [96.6%] with hypertension; 50 507 [26.2%] with diabetes; mean [SD] eGFR, 84 [21] mL/min/1.73 m2). There were 33 629 patients (17.5%) who had albuminuria testing; of whom 11 525 (34.3%) had albuminuria. Among 158 479 patients who were untested, the estimated albuminuria prevalence rate was 13.4% (n = 21 231). Thus, only 35.2% (11 525 of 32 756) of the projected population with albuminuria had been tested. Albuminuria testing was associated with higher adjusted odds of receiving ACEi or ARB treatment (OR, 2.39 [95% CI, 2.32-2.46]), SGLT2i treatment (OR, 8.22 [95% CI, 7.56-8.94]), and having blood pressure controlled to less than 140/90 mm Hg (OR, 1.20 [95% CI, 1.16-1.23]). Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study of patients with hypertension or diabetes, it was estimated that approximately two-thirds of patients with albuminuria were undetected due to lack of testing. These results suggest that improving detection of CKD with albuminuria testing represents a substantial opportunity to optimize care delivery for reducing CKD progression and cardiovascular complications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To address the situation that the accuracy of concentration intervals (CI) corresponding to dipstick grades is not given by the manufacturers or literature, we developed a method that determined reasonable dipstick grades with concentration intervals (GCIs) based on the percent agreement (PA) and discussed the GCI application to comparability among currently dipstick tests. METHODS: By comparing the results of 2 dipstick tests (iChem and KU-500) with the quantitative test (AU5800), the GCIs were verified and established based on the PAs, which were calculated and used as an indicator of GCI's accuracy. The overlap (percent) between the 2 GCIs with the same grade (2 dipstick devices), was calculated and used to evaluate the agreement between their test results. RESULTS: After verification and adjustment, the GCI and PA combinations for iChem Velocity were as follows: - (<0.1 g/l, 85 %), ± (0.1-0.3 g/l, 66 %), 1+ (0.3-1 g/l, 78 %), 2+ (1-3 g/l, 74 %), 3+ (3-6 g/l, 77 %), and 4+ (≥6 g/l, 84 %). The determined GCI and PA combinations for KU-500 were: - (<0.1.2 g/l, 75 %), ± (0.12-0.5 g/l, 63 %), 1+ (0.5-1.2 g/l, 69 %), 2+ (1.2-3.2 g/l, 76 %), and 3+ (≥3.2 g/l, 82 %). The GCI overlaps between the 2 dipstick devices were - (83 %), ± (45 %), 1+ (56 %), 2+ (82 %), and 3+ or ≥3+ (94 %). The overall overlap was 72 %. Since the overlaps ± (45 %) and 1+ (56 %) were within the overlap reject limit for any grade (70 %), and the overall overlap (72 %) was within the overall overlap reject limit (80 %), the test results of the 2 devices were not comparable. CONCLUSIONS: GCIs can be verified and established correctly based on PAs, and industry standards for dipstick tests can be established based on GCIs and PAs. Comparability between dipstick devices, historical data, and literature data can be roughly determined based on the overlap.

RESUMEN

Macrophages are involved in the whole process of atherosclerosis, which is characterized by accumulation of lipid and inflammation. Presently, clinically used lipid-lowering drugs cannot completely retard the progress of atherosclerosis. Liver X receptor (LXR) plays a key role in regulation of lipid metabolism and inflammation. Accumulating evidence have demonstrated that synthetic LXR agonists can significantly retard the development of atherosclerosis. However, these agonists induce sever hypertriglyceridemia and liver steatosis. These side effects have greatly limited their potential application for therapy of atherosclerosis. The rapid development of drug delivery system makes it possible to delivery interested drugs to special organs or cells using nanocarriers. Macrophages express various receptors which can recognize and ingest specially modified nanocarriers loaded with LXR agonists. In the past decades, a great progress has been made in this field. These macrophage-targeted nanocarriers loaded with LXR agonists are found to decrease atherosclerosis by reducing cholesterol accumulation and inflammatory reactions. Of important, these nanocarriers can alleviate side effects of LXR agonists. In this article, we briefly review the roles of macrophages in atherosclerosis, mechanisms of action of LXR agonists, and focus on the advances of macrophage-targeted nanocarriers loaded with LXR agonists. This work may promote the potential clinical application of these nanocarriers.

RESUMEN

Assembling two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials into laminar membranes with a subnanometer (subnm) interlayer spacing provides a material platform for studying a range of nanoconfinement effects and exploring the technological applications related to the transport of electrons, ions and molecules. However, the strong tendency for 2D nanomaterials to restack to their bulk crystalline-like structure makes it challenging to control their spacing at the subnm scale. It is thus necessary to understand what nanotextures can be formed at the subnm scale and how they can be engineered experimentally. In this work, with dense reduced graphene oxide membranes as a model system, we combine synchrotron-based X-ray scattering and ionic electrosorption analysis to reveal that their subnanometric stacking can result in a hybrid nanostructure of subnm channels and graphitized clusters. We demonstrate that the ratio of these two structural units, their sizes and connectivity can be engineered by stacking kinetics through the reduction temperature to allow the realization of high-performance compact capacitive energy storage. This work highlights the great complexity of subnm stacking of 2D nanomaterials and provides potential methods to engineer their nanotextures at will.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: According to previous reports, obesity especially visceral fat has become an important public health problem, causing an estimation of 20.5 disability-adjusted life years per 1000 inhabitants. Those who exercised for 1 or 2 days per week and reached the recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity (PA) per week have been defined as "weekend warriors" (WWs). Although the benefits of PA in suppressing obesity have been widely studied, the association of WWs with the Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) and the difference between WW activity and regular PA are yet to be explored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the association between WW activity and other PA patterns with VAI in US adults. METHODS: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2016 data set was used, and the analytic sample was limited to adults 20 years and older who had complete information about VAI, PA patterns, and other covariates, including demographic characteristics, behavioral factors, and disease conditions. Participants' characteristics in different PA pattern groups were tested using the Rao and Scott adjusted χ2 test and ANOVA. Univariate and multivariate stepped linear regression models were then used to explore the association between the PA pattern and VAI. Finally, stratified analyses and interaction effects were conducted to investigate whether the association was stable among subgroups. RESULTS: The final sample included 9642 adults 20 years or older, which is representative of 158.1 million noninstitutionalized US adults, with 52.15% (n=5169) being male and 70.8% (n=4443) being non-Hispanic White. Gender, age group, race, education level, income level, marital status, smoking status, alcoholism, VAI, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes were all correlated with the PA pattern, but no relationship between hypertension and PA pattern was observed. After adjusting for demographic covariates, smoking status, alcoholism, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension, WW and regularly active adults had a ß of .307 (95% CI -0.611 to -0.003) and .354 (95% CI -0.467 to -0.241), respectively, for reduced VAI when compared with inactive adults, but no significant effect of lowering VAI (ß=-.132, 95% CI -0.282 to 0.018) was observed in insufficiently active adults when compared with inactive adults. Besides, no significant difference was exhibited between WW adults and regularly active adults (ß=.047, 95% CI -0.258 to 0.352), suggesting WW adults had the same benefit of decreasing VAI as regularly active adults. Stratified analyses results exhibited that WW activity was related to reduced VAI in female adults aged 20-44 years who were non-Hispanic Black, other, or multiracial; high school or General Educational Development education; and never married, and the association between PA pattern and VAI remained stable in all demographic subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with inactive adults, WWs could reduce VAI, and there was no significant difference between WWs and regular active adults in decreasing VAI. Our study provides compelling evidence of the beneficial effect of WW activity on visceral obesity.

RESUMEN

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), which is caused by a novel Bunyavirus, has gradually become a threatening infectious disease in rural areas of Asia. Studies have identified a severe cytokine storm and impaired humoral immune response in SFTS. However, the cellular immune response to SFTS virus (SFTSV) infection remains largely unknown. Here we report that SFTS patients had a cytokine storm accompanied by high levels of chemokines. CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of SFTS patients exhibited a more activated phenotype and enhanced the antiviral responses. They increased the expression of CD69 and CD25, secreted a higher level of IFN-γ and granzyme, and had a stronger proliferative ability than in healthy controls. In convalescent SFTS patients, the expression of CD69 and CD25 on CD8+ T cells was reduced. In addition, we found the ratio and cellularity of CD14+ CD16+ intermediate monocytes were increased in peripheral blood of SFTS patients. Both the expression of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) on CD14+ CD16+ intermediate monocytes and the expression of C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 3 (CXCR3) on CD8+ T cells increased dramatically in SFTS patients. Our studies reveal a potential pathway that CD8+ T cells rapidly activate and are mostly recruited by intermediate monocytes through CXCL10 in SFTSV infection. Our results may be of clinical relevance for further treatment and discharge instructions in SFTSV infections.

RESUMEN

Fluoranthene (FLU) has shown relatively high toxicity to aquatic life as a priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). Considering the toxic effects of FLU on aquatic organisms and its high detection frequency in the aquatic environment, it is necessary and critical to derive FLU water quality criteria (WQC) for the protection of aquatic organisms and ecological risk assessment. However, due to the lack of toxicity data at different classification levels, there has been no research about the WQC of FLU. In this study, nine acute and three chronic toxicity tests were carried out on 9 Chinese indigenous aquatic species from different classification levels to obtain toxicity data. According to the US EPA guidelines, the criterion maximum concentration of 0.570 mg/L and the criterion continuous concentration of 0.174 mg/L were developed. There is no significant difference when comparing the species sensitivity distributions between indigenous and exotic species. Therefore, it is possible to use toxicity data from organisms in different areas for ecological risk assessment of FLU. CAPSULE: We compared the sensitivity between indigenous and exotic aquatic species for fluoranthene and derived its water quality criteria.
