RESUMEN

The adverse effects of heavy metals have arousing concern in the high geological background area, especially in southwestern Guizhou, China. However, the pollution status of heavy metals are still unclear when exposed to rice and corn in Guizhou province. Therefore, the concentration, pollution level, spatial distribution, and probabilistic health risks of Ni, Cr, Pb, Cu, and Zn are estimated in rice and corn. A total of 241 samples (117 for rice and 124 for corn) were collected from Guizhou province and measured by a method of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that rice and corn were contaminated with Ni and Cr. High concentrations of Ni were presented in the southeast of rice. It indicated that 22.0 % of rice samples were contaminated with Ni. HI values for children and adults exceeded 1.0 in rice and corn, suggesting that humans might be subject to probabilistic non-carcinogenic risks. FTCR demonstrated that rice and corn might cause probabilistic carcinogenic risks to children and adults, which were both greatly higher than 1.0 × 10-4. Moreover, the contributions of Ni to the HI and FTCR were the highest for adults and children. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the exposure of heavy metals in rice and corn, especially in Ni. The results would provide a novel prospective for pollution control and be helpful for environmental regulation.

Background: Cold stress usually occurs in winter and is one of the most significant environmental factors restricting the growth of the tea plant as well as its geographical distribution. Objective: It is necessary to identify the physiological and molecular mechanisms of plants under cold stress so that cold-tolerant crop varieties can be cultivated to limit production losses. At the same time, this would allow the crop planting area to be expanded, hence improving the economic benefits. Methods: In this study, the transcriptome data of Yunwu Tribute Tea under cold conditions were obtained using the Illumina HiSeq platform. By analyzing changes in transcriptome data associated with the antioxidant enzyme system, plant hormone signal transduction, proline and tyrosine metabolism pathways, and transcription factors, the molecular mechanisms involved in Yunwu Tribute Tea under cold stress were investigated. Results: In this study, Illumina HiSeq technology was applied to investigate the cold-tolerance mechanism. For this purpose, cDNA libraries were obtained from two groups of samples, namely the cold-treated group (DW) and the control group (CK). A total of 185,973 unigenes were produced from 511,987 assembled transcripts; among these, 16,020 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (corrected p-value < 0.01, |log2(fold change)| >3), including 9606 up-regulated and 6414 down-regulated genes, were obtained. Moreover, the antioxidant enzyme system, plant hormone signal transduction, proline and tyrosine metabolism pathways, and transcription factors were analyzed; based on these results, a series of candidate genes related to cold stress were screened out and discussed. The physiological indexes related to the low-temperature response were tested, along with five DEGs which were validated by quantitative real-time PCR. Conclusions: Differential gene expression analysis has confirmed that substantial cold-responsive genes are related to the antioxidant enzyme system, plant hormone signal transduction, proline metabolism pathway, tyrosine metabolism pathway, and transcription factors.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the perception of patient safety and the reporting system in public in China, and make further recommendations for the optimization of the reporting system of patient safety. METHODS: The following data were collected through an online questionnaire from medical staffs and patients: recognition of patient safety, comments on patient participation, comments on spontaneous reports, attitudes toward the principles of spontaneous reports, and willingness to participate. This information was presented with frequency and percentage with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Spearman rank correlation was used to evaluate the association of those data. RESULTS: A total of 27,493 valid questionnaires were collected in this study. The participants who knew patient safety very well, regarded patients as an essential part to enhance patient safety, viewed spontaneous reports helpful, agreed on the 3 principles of voluntariness, anonymity, and nonpunishment of the reporter, and were willing to participate in reporting were accounted for 39.2% (95% CI, 38.6%-39.8%), 31.2% (95% CI, 30.7%-31.8%), 25.2% (95% CI, 24.7%-25.7%), 24.0% (95% CI, 23.5%-24.5%), and 19.9% (95% CI, 19.4%-20.4%), respectively. A moderate positive correlation was observed between comments on spontaneous reports and attitudes toward the principles of spontaneous reports (medical staffs versus patients, rs = 0.452 versus rs = 0.439; both, P < 0.01), as well as comments on patient participation and comments on spontaneous reports (medical staffs versus patients, rs = 0.410 versus rs = 0.460; both, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The awareness of patient safety may influence the choices of the other questions subsequently and may affect their voluntariness for safety reports ultimately. Pertinent measures, such as publicity of the relevant concept, simplification of the reporting procedures, and promotion of incentive mechanisms, should be adopted to promote the optimization of the reporting system.

Low temperature is an important factor that affects the growth and reproduction of tea plants [Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze]. In this study, Yunwu Tribute Tea cutting seedlings [Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze var. niaowangensis Q.H. Chen] were subjected to different low-temperature treatments in Guizhou Province, China, and the changes in physiological indicators of the leaves were measured to investigate the physiological response and cold tolerance of this variety. Under cold stress, the peak of antioxidant enzyme activity appeared on the third day of treatment at 1°C, indicating that Yunwu Tribute Tea could improve the resistance to cold stress through an increase in enzyme activity within a low-temperature range. However, after 3 days treatment at 1°C, the tolerance of plant had been exceeded; the ability to resist cold stress disappeared, and enzyme activity decreased. When the temperature or duration of stress exceeded the maximum tolerance of the plant, the synthesis of soluble substances decreased in concert with their protective effects. Under cold conditions, Yunwu Tribute Tea could increase the production of abscisic acid growth inhibitors and reduce those of indoleacetic acid, gibberellin, and other growth promoting substances to manage cold stress by regulating the balance of growth regulators in the plant. Five differential genes were screened as candidate genes from the Yunwu Tribute Tea cold stress transcriptome (DW, 1°C) for fluorescence quantitative analysis. The results showed that the changes in levels of expression of these genes under continuous cold stress significantly positively correlated with the corresponding physiological indicators. Nevertheless, the levels of expression of the Yunwu Tribute Tea polyphenol oxidase (PPO) gene and the gibberellin 3ß-dioxygenase gene (G3O2) were reversely inhibited under cold stress. The result was consistent with the corresponding physiological indicators, and it provides a basis for the study of cold resistance mechanisms in tea plants.

Considering the complexity of the physical model of wildfire occurrence, this paper develops a method to evaluate the wildfire risk of transmission-line corridors based on Naïve Bayes Network (NBN). First, the data of 14 wildfire-related factors including anthropogenic, physiographic, and meteorologic factors, were collected and analyzed. Then, the relief algorithm is used to rank the importance of factors according to their impacts on wildfire occurrence. After eliminating the least important factors in turn, an optimal wildfire risk assessment model for transmission-line corridors was constructed based on the NBN. Finally, this model was carried out and visualized in Guangxi province in southern China. Then a cost function was proposed to further verify the applicability of the wildfire risk distribution map. The fire events monitored by satellites during the first season in 2020 shows that 81.8% of fires fall in high- and very-high-risk regions.

CONTEXT.­: Covert severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections could be seeding new outbreaks. How to identify asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections early has become a global focus. OBJECTIVE.­: To explore the roles of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies detection, nucleic acid tests, and computed tomography (CT) scanning to identify asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection. DESIGN.­: The clinical data of 389 individuals with close contacts, including in general characteristics, SARS-CoV-2 etiology, serum-specific IgM and IgG antibody detection and CT imaging results, were systematically analyzed. RESULTS.­: The present study showed that only 89 of 389 individuals with close contacts were positive after the first nucleic acid test, while 300 individuals were still negative after 2 nucleic acid tests. Among the 300 individuals, 75 did not have pneumonia, and the other 225 individuals had pulmonary imaging changes. A total of 143 individuals were eventually diagnosed as having asymptomatic infection through IgM antibody and IgG antibody detection. The sensitivity, specificity, and false-negative rate of IgM and IgG antibody detection were approximately 97.1% (347 of 357), 95.3% (204 of 214), and 4.67% (10 of 214), respectively. It also indicated that during approximately 2 weeks, most individuals were both IgM positive and IgG positive, accounting for 68.57% (72 of 105). During approximately 3 weeks, the proportion of IgM-positive and IgG-positive individuals decreased to 8.57% (9 of 105), and the proportion of IgM-negative and IgG-positive individuals increased to 76.19% (80 of 105). CONCLUSIONS.­: There are highlighted prospects of IgM/IgG antibody detection as a preferred method in identifying the individuals with asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially combined with nucleic acid tests and pulmonary CT scanning.

A fungal strain able to rapidly degrade bensulphuron-methyl (BSM), called BP-H-02, was isolated for the first time from soil that had been contaminated with BSM for several years. BP-H-02 can use BSM as the sole carbon and energy source for growth in a mineral salt medium. Based on morphological and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) analysis, BP-H-02 was identified as Penicillium pinophilum. Under optimal conditions (pH 6.5, temperature 30 °C and 200 mg/L VSSinoculum), more than 87% of the initially added BSM (50mg/L) was degraded after 60 h. Metabolites were identified as 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine and 1-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl) urea by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and a possible degradation pathway was deduced. In a soil bioremediation experiment, inoculation of soil with BP-H-02 promoted the degradation of BSM more effectively than did the control. These results revealed that BP-H-02 can biodegrade bensulphuron-methyl efficiently and could potentially be used to bioremediate sulphonylurea herbicides contamination.

AIM: To discuss the merits of "tubes treatment" for esophageal fistula (EF). METHODS: A 66-year-old female who suffered from a bronchoesophageal and esophagothoratic fistula underwent a successful "three tubes treatment" (close chest drainage, negative pressure suction at the leak, and nasojejunal feeding tube), combination of antibiotics, antacid drugs and nutritional support. Another 55-year-old male patient developed an esophagopleural fistula (EPF) after esophageal carcinoma operation. He too was treated conservatively with the three tubes strategy as mentioned above towards a favorable outcome. RESULTS: The two patients recovered with the tubes treatment, felt well and became able to eat and drink, presenting no complaint. CONCLUSION: Tubes treatment is an effective basic way for EF. It may be an alternative treatment option.
