RESUMEN

Large-scale, highly integrated and low-power-consuming hardware is becoming progressively more important for realizing optical neural networks (ONNs) capable of advanced optical computing. Traditional experimental implementations need N2 units such as Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) for an input dimension N to realize typical computing operations (convolutions and matrix multiplication), resulting in limited scalability and consuming excessive power. Here, we propose the integrated diffractive optical network for implementing parallel Fourier transforms, convolution operations and application-specific optical computing using two ultracompact diffractive cells (Fourier transform operation) and only N MZIs. The footprint and energy consumption scales linearly with the input data dimension, instead of the quadratic scaling in the traditional ONN framework. A ~10-fold reduction in both footprint and energy consumption, as well as equal high accuracy with previous MZI-based ONNs was experimentally achieved for computations performed on the MNIST and Fashion-MNIST datasets. The integrated diffractive optical network (IDNN) chip demonstrates a promising avenue towards scalable and low-power-consumption optical computational chips for optical-artificial-intelligence.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) serve as important regulators of diverse types of cancer, including glioma. Nevertheless, their precise roles in cancers remain sufficiently unexplored. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantitative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to determine the levels of HOMEOBOX A11 antisense RNA (HOXA11-AS) and miR-130a-5p in glioma tissues and cell lines. Short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) targeting HOXA11-AS or pcDNA3.1 were transfected into cells via a vector encoding HOXA11-AS to decrease or increase the level of HOXA11-AS. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation, wound healing, flow cytometry and transwell assays were applied to assess the role of HOXA11-AS in glioblastoma cell growth, apoptosis and aggressiveness. The expression of N-cadherin and E-cadherin was determined using immunofluorescence staining. The expression of high-mobility group protein B2 (HMGB2) was determined using Western blot analysis in vitro and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining in vivo. The direct target of HOXA11-AS and miR-130a-5p was confirmed using the Luciferase reporter assay. Glioblastoma cells were subcutaneously implanted into nude mice to determine the role of HOXA11-AS in tumor growth in vivo. RESULTS: In the current study, we demonstrated that the lncRNA HOXA11-AS was overexpressed in glioma. The overexpression of HOXA11-AS was correlated with advanced stages of glioma and poor prognosis. Downregulating HOXA11-AS expression significantly suppressed the proliferation, migration and invasion of glioma cells and increased their apoptosis. The growth of glioma cells in vitro was also suppressed by the downregulation of HOXA11-AS. Finally, we revealed that HOXA11-AS exerted its oncogenic effects by binding to miR-130a-5p, thereby neutralizing the suppressive effect of miR-130a-5p on HMGB2. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that HOXA11-AS regulates the growth and metastasis of glioma by targeting the miR-130a-5p-HMGB2 signaling axis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic periodontitis (CP) both are multifactorial chronic diseases and related to inflammation. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. The purpose of the study was to investigate the association among IL-6 gene polymorphisms, CP and CHD susceptibility in a Chinese population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The investigation was conducted as a case-control study involving 505 individuals: 113 patients with CHD and CP, 84 patients with CHD, 178 patients with CP and 130 control individuals. The polymorphisms of IL-6 gene were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Relationships between the distributions of the genotypes and risk factors were also assessed. RESULTS: Mutations at the loci -174 G/C, -597 G/A of IL-6 were rare in a Chinese population. No significant difference for IL-6-572C/G polymorphism was detected among moderate CP group, severe CP group and control (P = 0.312 and 0.481), significant differences were found between CHD groups and non-CHD groups (P ≤ 0.001). After adjustment for CHD risk factors, the G allele resulted in an increased risk (OR = 1.676-1.856), the GG/CG genotype was nearly two times higher risk compared to CC genotype (OR = 2.010-2.136). CONCLUSIONS: IL-6-572C/G polymorphism did not correlate with CP susceptibility, but might be a potential risk factor for CHD in a Chinese population.

RESUMEN

We have formed low-loss fusion splices from highly nonlinear (HNL) photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with small cores and high air-filling fractions to fibers with much larger mode field diameters (MFDs). The PCF core was locally enlarged by the controlled collapse of holes around the core while keeping other holes open. The fiber was then cleaved at the enlarged core and spliced to the large MFD fiber with a conventional electric arc fusion splicer. Splice losses as low as 0.36 dB were achieved between a PCF and a standard single-mode fiber (SMF) with MFDs of 1.8 microm and 5.9 microm, respectively.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Diabetics significantly increase risk for periodontitis. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene polymorphism may play certain roles in the progression of periodontitis with diabetes. The purpose of this study was to assess the association among IL-6 gene polymorphisms, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic periodontitis (CP) in a Chinese population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: DNA was obtained from 159 patients with CP, 88 patients with T2DM, 110 patients with CP&T2DM and 135 control subjects. The -174/-572/-597 polymorphisms of IL-6 gene were investigated by restriction fragment length polymorphism of polymerase chain reaction products. The results were further confirmed by sequencing. Significance was set at P < 0.008 after Bonferroni correction. RESULTS: Among four groups, CP&T2DM group showed the lowest IL-6-572 CC genotype and C-allele frequencies (54.5% and 74.1%). In this regard, there were significant differences between CP&T2DM group and the control group [P = 0.006, odds ratio (OR) = 0.475, 95% CI: 0.279-0.808 and P = 0.002, OR = 0.502, 95% CI: 0.319-0.788 respectively]. Logistic regression with adjustment for age, gender, body mass index, smoking and stress showed no significant difference in terms of IL-6-572 genotypes (P = 0.058, OR= 0.523, 95% CI: 0.268-1.022). CONCLUSIONS: The IL-6-572 genotype and allele distributions are unique to subjects with CP&T2DM in a Chinese population.

RESUMEN

The effects of sophoridine on acute myocardial infarction induced by ligation of left anterior descending coronary artery in 16 anesthetized and open-chest dogs were studied. Treatment with sophoridine 20 mg.kg-1 iv reduced the size of myocardial infarct 6 h after ligation and lowered the elevated plasma levels of lactic acid and pyruvic acid 15, 30 and 60 min after ligation. Sophoridine also lowered the activity of serum CPK 60 and 120 min after ligation and reduced TXB2 and increased 6-keto-PGF1 alpha, hence the metabolites of PGI2/TXA2 ratio after ligation was increased. Electron microscopy showed that sophoridine protected mitochondria of ischemic cells. These results indicated that sophoridine showed protective effects on acute myocardial infarction. The beneficial effect on PGI2/TXA2 and mitochondria seems to contribute its protective action.
