RESUMEN

This paper describes a mild and efficient catalytic deprotection method for isopropylidene ketals and benzylidene acetals using AcOH/H2O/DME(1,2-Dimethoxyethane). The method effectively removes ketal and acetal protecting groups from 2-deoxyglycosides which are prone to hydrolysis under acidic conditions. Moreover, it enables the selective removal of the terminal ketal over an internal one.

The survival rate of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) has steadily improved. However, osteoporosis introduced by treatment is prevalent and associated with increased mortality and disability for patients with NHL. We aimed to investigate factors impacting bone mineral density (BMD) reduction and osteoporosis, and the trend of BMD after chemotherapy. Overall, 97 newly diagnosed patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) were retrospectively enrolled. CT attenuation values were measured to assess BMD levels. Although 73.2% of patients received calcium and vitamin D supplements, 44.3% showed significant BMD reduction, and baseline BMD and hemoglobin levels were the risk factors. 26.6% of patients newly developed osteoporosis post-chemotherapy where age and cumulative dose of glucocorticoid were risk factors. The results of 20 patients with consecutive follow-up showed that BMD continued to decline for 6 months post-chemotherapy and did not return to baseline values. Therefore, BMD evaluation and more positive anti-resorption treatments should be administered for high-risk patients.

It can provide ideas for the use of uranium elements in the treatment of spent fuel from nuclear wastewater to explore the application potential of uranium element. Thus, it is necessary to research the structure and properties of a novel uranyl coordination polymer (CP) for uranium recovery and reuse. Herein, we designed and prepared a new uranyl CP U-CMNDI based on UO22+ and H2CMNDI (H2CMNDI = N, N'-bis(carboxymethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide). Structural analysis shows that two uranyl ions are connected by two parallel deprotonated CMNDI ligands to form a discrete uranyl dimer structure. U-CMNDI can act as a potential stimulus-responsive halide ion sensor by a fluorescence "turn on" response in water. The limit of detection for fluoride (F-), bromide (Br-), iodide (I-), and chloride (Cl-) is 5.00, 5.32, 5.49, and 5.73 µM, respectively. The fluorescence "turn on" behavior is based on the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism between halide ions and electron-deficient NDI cores. In addition, U-CMNDI demonstrates a color response to ultraviolet light, exhibiting reversible photochromic behavior with a notable color change. The color change mechanism can contribute to the PET process and the radical process.

Phosphorus (P) is an important nutrient for plants, and a lack of available P greatly limits plant growth and development. Phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) significantly enhance the ability of plants to absorb and utilize P, which is important for improving plant nutrient turnover and yield. This article summarizes and analyzes how PSMs promote the absorption and utilization of P nutrients by plants from four perspectives: the types and functions of PSMs, phosphate-solubilizing mechanisms, main functional genes, and the impact of complex inoculation of PSMs on plant P acquisition. This article reviews the physiological and molecular mechanisms of phosphorus solubilization and growth promotion by PSMs, with a focus on analyzing the impact of PSMs on soil microbial communities and its interaction with root exudates. In order to better understand the ability of PSMs and their role in soil P transformation and to provide prospects for research on PSMs promoting plant P absorption. PSMs mainly activate insoluble P through the secretion of organic acids, phosphatase production, and mycorrhizal symbiosis, mycorrhizal symbiosis indirectly activates P via carbon exchange. PSMs can secrete organic acids and produce phosphatase, which plays a crucial role in soil P cycling, and related genes are involved in regulating the P-solubilization ability. This article reviews the mechanisms by which microorganisms promote plant uptake of soil P, which is of great significance for a deeper understanding of PSM-mediated soil P cycling, plant P uptake and utilization, and for improving the efficiency of P utilization in agriculture.

This editorial comments on an article published in a recent issue of World Journal of Gastroenterology, entitled "Association of low muscle strength with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease: A nationwide study". We focused on the association between muscle strength and the incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), as well as the mechanisms underlying the correlation and related clinical applications. NAFLD, which is now redefined as MAFLD, is one of the most common chronic liver diseases globally with an increasing prevalence and is characterized by malnutrition, which may contribute to decreased muscle strength. Reduction of muscle strength reportedly has a pathogenesis similar to that of NAFLD/ MAFLD, including insulin resistance, inflammation, sedentary behavior, as well as insufficient vitamin D. Multiple studies have focused on the relationship between sarcopenia or muscle strength and NAFLD. However, studies investigating the relationship between muscle strength and MAFLD are limited. Owing to the shortage of specific medications for NAFLD/MAFLD treatment, early detection is essential. Furthermore, the relationship between muscle strength and NAFLD/MAFLD suggests that improvements in muscle strength may have an impact on disease prevention and may provide novel insights into treatments including dietary therapy, as well as tailored physical activity.

Introduction: Sugarcane endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacterium Klebsiella variícola DX120E displayed broad impact on growth, but the exact biological mechanism, especially polyamines (PAs) role, is still meager. Methods: To reveal this relationship, the content of polyamine oxidase (PAO), PAs, reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging antioxidative enzymes, phytohormones, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic synthase (ACS), chlorophyll content, and biomass were determined in sugarcane incubated with the DX120E strain. In addition, expression levels of the genes associated with polyamine metabolism were measured by transcriptomic analysis. Results: Genomic analysis of Klebsiella variícola DX120E revealed that 39 genes were involved in polyamine metabolism, transport, and the strain secrete PAs in vitro. Following a 7-day inoculation period, DX120E stimulated an increase in the polyamine oxidase (PAO) enzyme in sugarcane leaves, however, the overall PAs content was reduced. At 15 days, the levels of PAs, ROS-scavenging antioxidative enzymes, and phytohormones showed an upward trend, especially spermidine (Spd), putrescine (Put), catalase (CAT), auxin (IAA), gibberellin (GA), and ACS showed a significant up-regulation. The GO and KEGG enrichment analysis found a total of 73 differentially expressed genes, involving in the cell wall (9), stimulus response (13), peroxidase activity (33), hormone (14) and polyamine metabolism (4). Discussion: This study demonstrated that endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacteria stimulated polyamine metabolism and phytohormones production in sugarcane plant tissues, resulting in enhanced growth. Dual RNA-seq analyses provided insight into the early-stage interaction between sugarcane seedlings and endophytic bacteria at the transcriptional level. It showed how diverse metabolic processes selectively use distinct molecules to complete the cell functions under present circumstances.

Sugarcane is a significant primitive source of sugar and energy worldwide. The progress in enhancing the sugar content in sugarcane cultivars remains limited due to an insufficient understanding of specific genes related to sucrose production. The present investigation examined the enzyme activities, levels of reducing and non-reducing sugars, and transcript expression using RT-qPCR to assess the gene expression associated with sucrose metabolism in a high-sucrose sugarcane clone (GXB9) in comparison to a low-sucrose sister clone (B9). Sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS), sucrose phosphate phosphatase (SPP), sucrose synthase (SuSy), cell wall invertase (CWI), soluble acid invertase (SAI), and neutral invertase (NI) are essential enzymes involved in sucrose metabolism in sugarcane. The activities of these enzymes were comparatively quantified and analyzed in immature and maturing internodes of the high- and low-sucrose clones. The results showed that the higher-sucrose-accumulating clone had greater sucrose concentrations than the low-sucrose-accumulating clone; however, maturing internodes had higher sucrose levels than immature internodes in both clones. Hexose concentrations were higher in immature internodes than in maturing internodes for both clones. The SPS and SPP enzymes activities were higher in the high-sucrose-storing clone than in the low-sucrose clone. SuSy activity was higher in the low-sucrose clone than in the high-sucrose clone; further, the degree of SuSy activity was higher in immature internodes than in maturing internodes for both clones. The SPS gene expression was considerably higher in mature internodes of the high-sucrose clones than the low-sucrose clone. Conversely, the SuSy gene exhibited up-regulated expression in the low-sucrose clone. The enhanced expression of SPS in the high-sucrose clone compared to the low-sucrose clone suggests that SPS plays a major role in the increased accumulation of sucrose. These findings provide the opportunity to improve sugarcane cultivars by regulating the activity of genes related to sucrose metabolism using transgenic techniques.

AIM: To define the predictive factors of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and develop a nomogram for predicting severe ROP in southeast China. METHODS: Totally 554 infants diagnosed with ROP hospitalized in the Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University and hospitalized in Taizhou Women and Children's Hospital were included. Clinical data and 43 candidate predictive factors of ROP infants were collected retrospectively. Logistic regression model was used to identify predictive factors of severe ROP and to propose a nomogram for individual risk prediction, which was compared with WINROP model and Digirop-Birth model. RESULTS: Infants from the Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (n=478) were randomly allocated into training (n=402) and internal validation group (n=76). Infants from Taizhou Women and Children's Hospital were set as external validation group (n=76). Severe ROP were found in 52 of 402 infants, 12 of 76 infants, and 7 of 76 infants in training group, internal validation group, and external validation group, respectively. Birth weight [odds ratio (OR), 0.997; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.996-0.999; P<0.001], multiple births (OR, 1.885; 95%CI, 1.013-3.506; P=0.045), and non-invasive ventilation (OR, 0.288; 95%CI, 0.146-0.570; P<0.001) were identified as predictive factors for the prediction of severe ROP, by univariate analysis and multivariate analysis. For predicting severe ROP based on the internal validation group, the areas under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 78.1 (95%CI, 64.2-92.0) for the nomogram, 32.9 (95%CI, 15.3-50.5) for WINROP model, 70.2 (95%CI, 55.8-84.6) for Digirop-Birth model. In external validation group, AUC of the nomogram was also higher than that of WINROP model and Digirop-Birth model (80.2 versus 51.1 and 63.4). The decision curve analysis of the nomogram demonstrated better clinical efficacy than that of WINROP model and Digirop-Birth model. The calibration curves demonstrated a good consistency between the actual severe ROP incidence and the predicted probability. CONCLUSION: Birth weight, multiple births, and non-invasive ventilation are independent predictors of severe ROP. The nomogram has a good ability to predict severe ROP and performed well on internal validation and external validation in southeast China.

Although spinal gas is common and can be found in various sites and lesions, it should prompt a search for the underlying cause, given that the clinical significance of ectopic gas varies from benign to scary. Spinal gas can occur in the traumatic, iatrogenic, degenerative, osteoporotic, infectious, or neoplastic lesions. The imaging similarity may cause the misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis which sometimes requires immediate attention. The pattern of gas distribution, detailed appearance, clinical history, and findings on examination can provide clues to diagnosis. Computed tomography is the best method for sensitive detection of gas.

Abstract Introduction: Propofol is a widely used anesthetic and its dose is closely related to aging. Telomere length (TL) is a unique heritable trait, and emerging as a biomarker of aging, health and disease. Telomerase RNA component (TERC) plays an important role in maintaining TL. We proposed a hypothesis that propofol dose in general anesthesia can be predicted by measuring TL before operation, which greatly reduced the risk of anesthesia, especially the elderly. Methods: The association between the propofol dose in anesthesia induction and: TL in the DNA of peripheral blood leukocytes; body weight; sex; difference of the Bispectral Index (BIS) before and after anesthesia induction in patients was evaluated by multivariable linear regression analyses. The mutation at the 5'end or 3'end of TERC was detected. We recruited 100 patients of elective surgery. Results: We found that propofol dose in anesthesia induction was clearly correlated significantly with TL (r = 0.78, p < 0.001), body weight (r = 0.84, p = 0.004), sex (r = 0.83, p= 0.84, p = 0.004), sex (r = 0.83, p = 0.004), and difference of BIS before and after anesthesia induction (r = 0.85, p = 0.029). By comparing the absolute values of standardized regression coefficients (0.58, 0.21, 0.19, and 0.12) of the four variables, it can be seen that TL contributes the most to the propofol dose in anesthesia induction. However, the mutation at the 5' end or 3' end of TERC was not found. Conclusions: These findings provide preliminary evidence that the propofol dose in anesthesia induction was clearly correlated with genetically determined TL. TL may be a promising predictor of the propofol dose, which is beneficial to improve the safety of anesthesia and reduce perioperative complications.

Triazole polycarboxylic acid ligands are widely employed in the construction of MOFs due to their strong coordination ability and flexible coordination modes. In this work, three novel complexes (Pb(MCTCA)(H2O) (1), Co(HMCTCA)2(H2O)2 (2) and Cu(HMCTCA)2(H2O)2 (3)) based on the H2MCTCA ligand (5-methyl-1-(4-carboxyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid) were successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, respectively. X-ray single crystal structure analysis shows that complex 1 is a 3D network structure, where the central metal Pb(II) is six coordinated to form deformed triangular prism geometry. The complexes 2 and 3 are both 2D layer supramolecular structures connected through intermolecular hydrogen, where the central metals (Co/Cu) are six coordinated to form octahedral configuration geometry. Based on functional properties, it is found that complex 1 exhibits excellent detection ability for small-molecule drugs (azithromycin, colchicine and balsalazide disodium) and actinide cations (Th4+ and UO22+) within a lower concentration range without interference from other components. In particular, the detection limits of three small-molecule drugs are all lower than 0.30 µM. In addition, complexes 2 and 3 exhibited excellent catalytic reduction performance toward p-nitrophenol (PNP), with a reduction efficiency exceeding 98%. These experimental results evidence that complexes 1-3 have potential application prospects in fluorescence sensing and catalytic reduction.

Tuber indicum is the most economically important member of Tuber, with the highest production and widest distribution in China. However, the overexploitation of immature ascocarps not only has driven wild resources of the species toward extinction, but also has caused enconomic losses and a decline in the reputation of T.indicum quality. In this study, stage-specific metabolites of T. indicum in relation to nutritional quality and the mechanism of their accumulations were explored by transcriptome and metabolome analysis at five harvest times, representing four maturation stages. A total of 663 compounds were identified in T. indicum ascocarps by a widely targeted metabolomic approach. Lipid compounds are the most prominent metabolites (18%) in our samples and also are higher accumulation at the immature stage than at mature stage, representing 30.16% differential accumulated metabolites in this stage. Levels of some of the amino acids, such as S-(methyl) glutathione, S-adenosylmethionine, which are known truffle aroma precursors, were increased at the mature stage. The gene expression level related to the biosynthesis of volatile organic compounds were verified by qPCR. This study contributes to the preliminary understanding of metabolites variations in T. indicum ascocarps during maturity for quality evaluation and truffle biology.

Luminescent metal-organic framework composites with multiple luminescence emissions have been efficient sensing platforms. Herein, a fluorescent sensor (RhB@1-0.4) with dual-emission fluorescence properties was prepared by introducing rhodamine B (RhB) into the framework of complex 1, [Mn2.5(HCPCP)(H2O)4]·(CH3CN)0.5 [HCPCP = hexa-(4-carboxyl-phenoxy)-cyclotriphosphazene and CH3CN = acetonitrile), which is a novel crystalline two-dimensional (2D) coordinated organic framework material. It is a highly desirable material, realizing a ratiometric fluorescence response to putrescine with a high signal-to-noise ratio, and the detection limit can be as low as 6.8 µM. In addition, RhB@1-0.4 exhibited a better fluorescent sensing performance for aromatic diamines and nitrophenols compared with that of complex 1. It is a potential functionalized MOF material for the application of multichannel fluorescence sensing.

Based on the importance of chronic inflammation in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and diabetes, the bidirectional relationship between these 2 diseases has been widely confirmed. However, the molecular mechanisms of bidirectional relationship still need to be studied further. In this study, gene expression profile data for diabetes and periodontitis were obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Integrative analytical platform were constructed, including common differentially expressed genes (cDEGs), Gene Ontology-Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (GO-KEGG), and protein-protein interaction. Hub genes and essential modules were detected via Cytoscape. Key hub genes and signaling pathway that mediate chronic inflammation were validated by qPCR and Western blot. Eleven cDEGs were identified. Function analysis showed that cDEGs plays an important role in inflammatory response, cytokine receptor binding, TNF signaling pathway. As hub genes, CXCR4, IL1B, IL6, CXCL2, and MMP9 were detected based on the protein-protein interactions network. IL1B, CXCR4 mRNA were up-regulated in gingivitis samples compared with normal tissues (P < .05). Western blot indicated that the levels of TNF were enhanced in gingivitis of type 2 diabetes compared with normal tissues (P < .01). Hub gene and TNF signaling pathway are helpful to elucidate the molecular mechanism of the bidirectional relationship between periodontitis and diabetes.

Toxic acids produced by industries are major hazards to the environment and human health, and luminescent pyrene-based crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate promising performance in the detection of toxic acids. Herein, two novel isostructural 3D porous lanthanide MOFs, H3O·[Ln3(TBAPy)2(µ2-H2O)2(OH)2]·2DMA·2Diox·6.5H2O (Ln = Pr (1) and Ce (2); H4TBAPy (1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene); and DMA: N,N-dimethylacetamide) were synthesized, which showed alb topology. Based on the protonation and hydrogen bond mechanism, complex 1 could be used as a fluorescence recognition sensor for HX (X = F, Cl, Br, and I) acid solutions with different luminescence behaviors. It is worth noting that complex 1 exhibited high sensitivity in the fluorescence enhancement sensing of hydrofluoric acid, oxalic acid, and trichloroacetic acid. In particular, complex 1 had a low limit of detection (LOD) for OA (0.1 µM) and was applied to real monitoring of orange fruit samples. In addition, the PVA@1 film could selectively, sensitively, and quantitatively respond to hydrochloric acid (HCl) vapor through fluorescent quenching; due to its protonation and adsorption capacity, the LOD was 0.18 ppm. Therefore, the portable optical device, the PVA@1 film, can detect HCl gas in trace amounts, achieving the ultimate goal of real-time and rapid detection, which has potential application value for industrial production safety.

BACKGROUND: In recognizing the need for a reliable and valid instrument to assess psychological distress among children and adolescents, the present study translated the newly developed Depression Anxiety Stress Scale for Youth (DASS-Y) into Chinese, while also comparing its psychometric properties with those of the well-established DASS-21 within a primary and middle school demographic. METHODS: Utilizing a combination of convenience sampling and purposive sampling, a cohort comprising 1,507 primary and 1,131 middle school students was recruited. Rasch analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used in the data analysis. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between the DASS-Y and the DASS-21, notably within the anxiety subscale. The proportions of individuals with clinical mood disorders identified by the two scales demonstrated a significant disparity. Both scales, following an adjustment of responses, exhibited satisfactory internal consistency and convergent validity, with the acceptance of a three-factor structure. Furthermore, the DASS-Y showed superior discriminant validity relative to the DASS-21, providing more compelling evidence regarding concurrent validity. CONCLUSION: Overall, the Chinese version of the DASS-Y demonstrated superior robustness to the DASS-21 in terms of psychometric properties. The findings provide initial evidence for the psychometric properties of the DASS-Y from another culture.

Rossellomorea sp. DA94, isolated from mangrove sediment in the South China Sea (Beihai, Guangxi province), is an agarolytic and orange-pigmented bacterium. Here, we present the complete genome sequence of strain DA94, which comprises 4.63 Mb sequences with 43.5% GC content. In total, 4589 CDSs, 33 rRNA genes and 110 tRNA genes were obtained. Genomic analysis of strain DA94 revealed that 108 CAZymes were organized in 4578 PULs involved in polysaccharides degradation, transport, and regulation. Further, we performed the diversity of CAZymes and PULs comparison among Rossellomorea strains. Less CAZymes were organized more PULs, indicating highly efficiently polysaccharides utilization in Rossellomorea. Meanwhile, PUL0459, PUL0460 and PUL0316 related to agar degradation, and exolytic beta-agarase GH50, endo-type beta-agarase GH86 and arylsulfatase were identified in the genome of strain DA94. We verified that strain DA94 can degrade agar to form a bright clear zone around the bacterial colonies in the laboratory. Moreover, the carotenoid biosynthetic pathways were proposed, which may be responsible for orange-pigment of Rossellomorea sp. DA94. This study represents a thorough genomic characterization of CAZymes repertoire and carotenoid biosynthetic pathways of Rossellomorea, provides insight into diversity of related enzymes and their potential biotechnological applications.

RESUMEN

A novel uranyl organic framework (U-hdpcp) based on flexible cyclic triphosphazene polycarboxylate ligands was prepared, which possesses the ability to sense aromatic aldehyde solutions (benzaldehyde, salicylaldehyde and 2-bromobenzaldehyde) and nitro compounds (2,4,6-trinitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol and o-nitrophenol). A fluorescent thin film based on U-hdpcp@PVA with the ability to sense aldehyde vapors was prepared via a spin coating method. The work expands the library of UOF materials based on large-sized carboxylic acid ligands and demonstrates promising applications in the field of fluorescent sensors.

BACKGROUND: Teachers in high-stress roles face increasing psychological distress such as anxiety and depression, underscoring the need for validated assessment instruments. Given the current absence of a comprehensive, designated, and time-efficient scale capable of evaluating depression, anxiety, and stress among the teacher population, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) presents itself as a promising alternative. Despite the widespread application of the DASS-21 for assessing psychological distress across various populations, its validity among teachers, along with questions about its factor structure and its potential property of time equivalence, remain unverified. This study endeavors to address these considerations by investigating the psychometric properties of the DASS-21 specifically within the population of Chinese primary and middle school teachers. METHODS: Cross-sectional (n = 9,030) and longitudinal surveys (n = 1,642) were conducted using a non-probability sampling method. In addition to the DASS-21, the Chinese version of Chinese Teachers' Job Burnout Questionnaire (CTJBO) was utilized to evaluate the criterion validity of this scale. Three different approaches, namely confirmatory factor analysis, Rasch analysis, and network analysis, were employed to evaluate internal reliability, construct validity, as well as time invariance of the DASS-21. RESULTS: The DASS-21 demonstrated a high degree of internal consistency (Cronbach's α > 0.85) as well as excellent convergent validity, despite poor discriminant validity as determined by average variance extracted. Confirmatory factor analysis and network analysis further supported convergent validity. The three-factor structure outperformed one- and two-factor alternatives, establishing time invariance. Rasch analysis at the item level identified six inappropriate items within the anxiety and stress subscales, which were subsequently removed. Network analysis presented a better revised network. Regression analysis with emotional exhaustion as the criterion provided logical and accurate results. CONCLUSION: The DASS-21 was found to be a reliable and valid tool for measuring the mental health of teachers over time. To assess the instrument's psychometric properties, a combination of confirmatory factor analysis, Rasch analysis, and network analysis was utilized, which proved effective and is recommended for evaluating contentious instruments. Based on the results of the study, researchers and healthcare professionals are recommended to use the DASS-21 for assessing teachers' psychological distress. However, certain items identified in the study may need to be removed to enhance the instrument's appropriateness for this specific population.
