INTRODUCTION: Understanding the sex determination mechanisms in birds has great significance for the biological sciences and production in the poultry industry. Sex determination in chickens is a complex process that involves fate decisions of supporting cells such as granulosa or Sertoli cells. However, a systematic understanding of the genetic regulation and cell commitment process underlying sex determination in chickens is still lacking. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to dissect the molecular characteristics associated with sex determination in the gonads of chicken embryos. METHODS: Single-nucleus RNA-seq (snRNA-seq) and ATAC-seq (snATAC-seq) analysis were conducted on the gonads of female and male chickens at embryonic day 3.5 (E3.5), E4.5, and E5.5. RESULTS: Here, we provided a time-course transcriptional and chromatin accessible profiling of gonads during chicken sex determination at single-cell resolution. We uncovered differences in cell composition and developmental trajectories between female and male gonads and found that the divergence of transcription and accessibility in gonadal cells first emerged at E5.5. Furthermore, we revealed key cell-type-specific transcription factors (TFs) and regulatory networks that drive lineage commitment. Sex determination signaling pathways, dominated by BMP signaling, are preferentially activated in males during gonadal development. Further pseudotime analysis of the supporting cells indicated that granulosa cells were regulated mainly by the TEAD gene family and that Sertoli cells were driven by the DMRT1 regulons. Cross-species analysis suggested high conservation of both cell types and cell-lineage-specific TFs across the six vertebrates. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our study will contribute to accelerating the development of sex manipulation technology in the poultry industry and the application of chickens as a unique model for studying cell fate decisions.

Individual sociability and alcohol drinking are interacted to escalate alcohol use. An impairment in perceiving and discriminating the difference in incentive values between social interaction and drinking behavior indicates a shift from moderate alcohol consumption to misuse. However, few studies have evaluated the incentive value of these two behaviors in the same scenario. Thus, we modified a behavioral test protocol to evaluate rodents' ability to perceive and discriminate the differences in incentive value between alcohol drinking and interaction with their social partners. The present protocol is simple and practicable. Only 2-3 days are required to complete the whole process. Compared with existing methods, our protocol is simple and practicable. Our findings suggested that subtle changes in the incentive value of distinct behaviors can be accurately and reliably assessed using the present protocol in mice with low or high levels of alcohol preference.•We described a modified behavioral test protocol to simultaneously evaluate the incentive value of alcohol drinking and social interaction.•The subtle changes in the incentive value of mice with different levels of alcohol preference can be accurately and reliably assessed in the present protocol.•Using our modified protocol, the differences of incentive value between distinct behaviors can be accurately and reliably assessed in mice with different risks to develop into AUD.

Egg quality and nutritional value are becoming increasingly important to consumers, offering a new direction for the development of high-quality eggs. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of egg quality and nutrient profiles in native breeds at different ages, integrating pedigree data. Our results reveal dynamic changes in egg qualities, stronger associations among eggshell-related traits, and the effect of onset production and body weight on egg qualities. The heritability of different traits was estimated, ranging from 0.05 to 0.62. Subsequently, we elucidated that the moisture and nutritional content in the egg yolk were not influenced by the percentage of yolk but were indeed subject to age regulation. There was a notable decrease in moisture, an elevation in crude fat, and an increase in the diversity of fatty acids of yolk with advancing age. In summary, investigating the trends and interrelationships in egg quality, nutrient content, and heritability across the whole laying cycle offers valuable insights for breeders to optimize feeding management strategies and aids consumers in meeting their expectations of egg quality.

Eggshell translucency, an externally observable feature, can influence consumer purchase intentions. The eggshell quality often deteriorates in aging laying hens, leading to increased eggshell translucency. Eggs exchange water vapor through the pores. It is commonly believed that the moisture remaining in the mastoid space contributes to translucent egg formation. However, the precise mechanisms underlying eggshell translucency require further structural investigations. This study aimed to explore the 3-dimensional microstructure of eggshells using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to provide insights into the microstructural basis of eggshell translucency. The results revealed that the ratio of pore volume to mastoid space volume was significantly higher in the high-translucency (TH) group than that in the low-translucency (TL) group (P < 0.01); however, the ratio of mastoid space to eggshell volume showed no significant difference. Additionally, measurements of the individual pore morphological features showed that the roundness of the pores in the TH group was significantly higher than that in the TL group, whereas the flatness of the pores in the TH group was significantly lower (P = 0.01). Eggshell porosity directly reflects the water vapor exchange capacity of eggshells, with the TL group exhibiting significantly higher eggshell porosity compared to the TH group (P = 0.02). In conclusion, based on observations of the 3-dimensional microstructure of eggshells, this study elucidated how the volume and morphological characteristics of pores influence the water vapor exchange capacity of eggshells, resulting in eggshell translucency.

The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in the content of functional nutrients in eggs, performance parameters, and egg quality parameters of different chicken breeds. In Trial 1, 150 41-week-old hens of each breed, including the Dwarf Layer, White Leghorn, Silky fowl, Beijing-you chicken, and Shouguang chicken, were randomly assigned to the control (CON) and 2.5% flaxseed oil (FSO) groups to compare the difference in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content in eggs. The contents of α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and total n-3 PUFA in eggs were increased (p < 0.05) in the FSO groups. The ALA (4.28%), DHA (2.03%), and total n-3 PUFA (6.46%) contents in eggs of Dwarf Layer were the highest among the five breeds (p < 0.05). To further verify if other functional nutrients also have such differences, 600 24-week-old White Leghorn and Dwarf Layer were allocated to four groups: CON, FSO, 0.02% selenium-enriched yeast (SEY), and 0.20% marigold flower extract (MFE), in Trial 2. The content of functional nutrients in eggs was significantly increased (p < 0.05) after feeding these additions. After feeding FSO, the eggs of the Dwarf Layer had a higher n-3 PUFA content than the White Leghorn (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were found in selenium and lutein content in different breeds. Performance and egg quality were not negatively impacted by FSO, SEY, or MFE.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of egg consumption in China and the production of functional eggs, and finally enrich the types of shell egg products. Trial 1 explored the influence of egg quality on Chinese consumers' willingness to purchase eggs through a questionnaire, which investigated 1,317 consumers' preferences for egg appearance, factors influencing egg purchase, and purchase of functional eggs. The results showed that about 65% of respondents ate more than 4 eggs per wk, pink eggs were the most popular in China, about 65% of consumers preferred eggs with an egg weight of 48 to 58 grams. For functional eggs, 75.32% of consumers have never heard of them. Preferences for eggshell color and yolk color varied by geographic region, with darker colors preferred in Northeast China. Based on the survey results of functional eggs consumption in Trial 1, the dwarf layers of China Agricultural University were used in Trial 2 to produce functional eggs. The eggs are small and pink in color, which is in line with the preferences of Chinese consumers. Three hundred dwarf layers were divided into 4 groups, using the linseed oil added, marigold extract added, and yeast selenium added diets to produce normal, n-3 fatty acid-enriched, lutein-enriched and selenium-enriched eggs by feeding for 28 d, determined the eggs' nutrient content and egg quality. The results showed that the n-3 fatty acid, lutein and selenium contents of the eggs of dwarf layers were significantly increased by changing the diets and did not affect the egg weight, eggshell strength, Haugh units or the proportion of egg parts. The results of this study are helpful to understand the trend of egg consumption preferences in China, and on this basis to produce functional eggs that meet the consumers' expectations.

Translucent egg consumption is low due to consumer acceptance and quality concerns, which is a problem that egg producers need to address. This study was performed to evaluate the reasons for the high occurrence of egg translucency in summer, as well as whether the addition of mono-dicalcium phosphate (MDCP) to the diet can relieve eggshell translucency and whether eggshell translucency is associated with the risk of bacterial invasion. A total of 72 laying hens that were 36 weeks old were randomly divided into control (CON) and MDCP groups and fed in the same environment. Results showed that the number of translucent eggs increases in July and August as the temperature and humidity increase. Compared with the CON group, in July, August, and October, the translucent egg grade (TEG) of the MDCP group was lower than that of the CON group (p < 0.05). TEG was correlated with mastoid space height (MSH), width (MSW), and area (MSA) (correlation coefficients 0.63, 0.59, and 0.68, respectively, p ≤ 0.05). There was no significant difference in the invasion rate of E. coli between translucent and non-translucent egg groups (47.2% vs. 39.33%), and translucent area and non-translucent area (13.49% vs. 15.08%). In conclusion, our results show that dietary MDCP may alleviate eggshell translucency and that eggshell translucency would not increase the probability of E. coli cross-shell penetration rate.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) with atypical features, namely depression with atypical features (AFD), is one of the most common clinical specifiers of MDD, closely associated with bipolar disorder (BD). However, there is still a lack of clinical guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of AFD. Our study mainly focuses on three issues about how to identify AFD, what is the appropriate individualized treatment for AFD, and what are the predictive biomarkers of conversion to BD. METHODS: The Study of Individualized Diagnosis and Treatment for Depression with Atypical Features (iDoT-AFD) is a multicenter, prospective, open-label study consisting of a 12-week randomized controlled trial (RCT) and a continued follow-up until 4 years or reaching the study endpoint. It is enrolling 480 patients with AFD (120 per treatment arm), 100 patients with BD, and 100 healthy controls (HC). Multivariate dimension information is collected including clinical features, cognitive function, kynurenine pathway metabolomics, and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. Firstly, multivariate informatics analyses are performed to recognize patients with AFD from participants including the first-episode and recurrent atypical depression, patients with BD, and patients with HC. Secondly, patients with atypical depression are randomly allocated to one of the four treatment groups including "single application of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)", "SSRI/SNRI combined with mood stabilizer," "SSRI/SNRI combined with quetiapine (≥ 150 mg/day)," or "treatment as usual (TAU)" and then followed up 12 weeks to find out the optimized treatment strategies. Thirdly, patients with atypical depression are followed up until 4 years or switching to BD, to explore the risk factors of conversion from atypical depression to BD and eventually build the risk warning model of conversion to BD. DISCUSSION: The first enrolment was in August 2019. The iDoT-AFD study explores the clinical and biological markers for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of AFD and further provides evidence for clinical guidelines of AFD. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a common chronic mental disorder usually characterized by manic, hypomanic and depressive episodes. Patients diagnosed with BD have cognitive impairments in both the mood attack and remission stages, that is impairment of attention, memory and executive function. Up till the present moment, the causative mechanisms of cognitive impairment in BD patients remain poorly understood. Several studies have demonstrated that cognitive impairment in patients with bipolar disorder is not associated with a single factor, but with gene polymorphism, brain structural and functional variables, inflammatory and metabolic factors. Herein, we reviewed and summarized the recent reports on cognitive impairment mechanisms in patients with BD. To prevent or alleviate cognitive damage at an early stage, we propose that future research should focus on investigating the pathological mechanism of specific cognitive dimension damage as well as the pathological mechanism network between the damage of each dimension. It is crucial to recognize mechanisms of cognitive impairment for improving the symptoms and prognosis of BD patients, restoring their social function and integration.

This 3-month randomized psychoeducation-controlled trial (RCT) of exercise was undertaken in young adolescents with subthreshold depression to examine the impact on gut microbiota. Participants (aged 12-14 years) were randomly assigned to an exercise or a psychoeducation-controlled group. The exercise intervention arm took moderate-intensity exercise, comprised of 30 min of running per day, 4 days a week for 3 months. Psychoeducation intervention consisted of 6 sessions of group activity including gaming, reading, and singing. The gut microbiota was assessed by metagenomic sequencing. After 3-month moderate-intensity exercise, the intervention group increased the relative abundance of Coprococcus, Blautia, Dorea, Tyzzerella at the genus level, as well as Tyzzerella nexilis, Ruminococcus obeum at species level when compared to the psychoeducation-controlled group. Moreover, EggNOG analyses showed that the defense and signal transduction mechanism were highly enriched after the active intervention, and changes were correlated with improvements in depressive symptoms measured by Chinese Patient Depression Questionnaire 9. The KEGG pathway of neurodegenerative diseases was depleted in the microbiome in young adolescents with subthreshold depression after exercise intervention. This 3-month RCT suggests that at both the genus and species levels, aerobic group exercise intervention improved in depressive symptoms and revealed changes in gut microbiota suggesting beneficial effects.

BACKGROUND: Most duck eggs possess a fishy odor, indicating that ducks generally exhibit impaired trimethylamine (TMA) metabolism. TMA accumulation is responsible for this unpleasant odor, and TMA metabolism plays an essential role in trimethylaminuria (TMAU), also known as fish odor syndrome. In this study, we focused on the unusual TMA metabolism mechanism in ducks, and further explored the unclear reasons leading to the debilitating TMA metabolism. METHODS: To achieve this, transcriptome, proteome, and metagenome analyses were first integrated based on the constructed duck populations with high and low TMA metabolism abilities. Additionally, further experiments were conducted to validate the hypothesis regarding the limited flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) metabolism ability of ducks. RESULTS: The study demonstrated that liver FMO3 and cecal microbes, including Akkermansia and Mucispirillum, participated in TMA metabolism in ducks. The limited oxidation ability of FMO3 explains the weakening of TMA metabolism in ducks. Nevertheless, it decreases lipid deposition and increases antibacterial activity, contributing to its survival and reproduction during the evolutionary adaptation process. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the function of FMO3 and intestinal microbes in regulating TMA metabolism and illustrated the biological significance of FMO3 impairment in ducks.

BACKGROUND: Protoporphyrin IX (Pp IX) is the primary pigment for brown eggshells. However, the regulatory mechanisms directing Pp IX synthesis, transport, and genetic regulation during eggshell calcification in chickens remain obscure. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of brown eggshell formation at different times following oviposition, using White Leghorn hens (WS group), Rhode Island Red light brown eggshell line hens (LBS group) and Rhode Island Red dark brown eggshell line hens (DBS group). RESULTS: At 4, 16 and 22 h following oviposition, Pp IX concentrations in LBS and DBS groups were significantly higher in shell glands than in liver (P < 0.05). Pp IX concentrations in shell glands of LBS and DBS groups at 16 and 22 h following oviposition were significantly higher than WS group (P < 0.05). In comparative transcriptome analysis, δ-aminolevulinate synthase 1 (ALAS1), solute carrier family 25 member 38 (SLC25A38), ATP binding cassette subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) and feline leukemia virus subgroup C cellular receptor 1 (FLVCR1), which were associated with Pp IX synthesis, were identified as differentially expressed genes (DEGs). RT-qPCR results showed that the expression level of ALAS1 in shell glands was significantly higher in DBS group than in WS group at 16 and 22 h following oviposition (P < 0.05). In addition, four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ALAS1 gene that were significantly associated with eggshell brownness were identified. By identifying the differential metabolites in LBS and DBS groups, we found 11-hydroxy-E4-neuroprostane in shell glands and 15-dehydro-prostaglandin E1(1-) and prostaglandin G2 2-glyceryl ester in uterine fluid were related to eggshell pigment secretion. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the regulatory mechanisms of eggshell brownness were studied comprehensively by different eggshell color and time following oviposition. Results show that Pp IX is synthesized de novo and stored in shell gland, and ALAS1 is a key gene regulating Pp IX synthesis in the shell gland. We found three transporters in Pp IX pathway and three metabolites in shell glands and uterine fluid that may influence eggshell browning.

The fishy odor of duck eggs has restricted their consumption and industrial development, a problem that producers need to address. We estimated the effects of cage, floor, and pond rearing systems on duck egg flavor, egg quality, and microbial diversity by evaluating yolk trimethylamine (TMA) content, egg quality, and the differences between duck cecum (cage cecum, CC; floor cecum, FC; pond cecum, PC) and the environment (cage environment, CE; floor environment, FE; pond environment, PE). The results show that the yolk TMA content of the floor-rearing and pond-rearing systems was significantly higher than that of the cage-rearing system (P < 0.001), with no difference between the floor and pond-rearing systems. No significant differences were detected in egg quality among the rearing systems. Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla in the cecum, and in the rearing environment, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla. The results of α and ß diversity analyses show that changes in the rearing system affected the composition and diversity of duck cecal microbes. In addition, we screened several genera that may be related to the production of TMA in duck cecum under different rearing systems using LEfSe analysis; for example, Subdoligranulum in the CC group; Romboutsia in the FC group; and Lactobacillus, Clostridium, and Streptococcus in the PC group. In conclusion, the rearing system affects the cecal microbes of ducks, which in turn affect the deposition of TMA in duck eggs but have no adverse effect on egg quality. This study provides a basis for the development of rearing strategies to reduce the fishy odor of egg yolk in the duck industry.

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a highly heritable mood disorder. Activated low-grade inflammation may not only play an adverse role in the pathophysiology of BD, but also contribute to a resilience process. The neuroinflammatory processes may underlie the attention deficit and alteration of gray matter volume (GMV) in the early stage and premorbid period of BD. Also, the differential inflammation-brain relationship may be identified as biological markers for BD pathology or resilience.Methods: The present data were collected between March 2013 and June 2016. Sixty-four offspring of BD patients were recruited and subdivided into asymptomatic (n = 33, mean age = 17.8 years) and symptomatic (n = 31, mean age = 16.2 years) groups according to whether they manifested subthreshold mood symptoms. The diagnosis of BD was confirmed according to DSM-IV criteria. C-reactive protein (CRP) level, attention functioning, and GMV data were measured by ELISA, the Continuous Performance Test-Identical Pair test (CPT-IP), and 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging, respectively. Their relationships were examined with mediation and moderation analyses.Results: We observed a higher level of CRP and poorer attention in the symptomatic group than the asymptomatic group and found a significant group × CRP interactive effect on GMV in regions spanning right precentral and postcentral gyri (P = .043). CRP levels negatively mediated the relationship between the group and CPT-IP scores, and the group marginally moderated the relationship between pre/postcentral gyri volumes and CPT-IP scores (P = .05).Conclusions: Symptomatic and asymptomatic bipolar offspring manifested differential inflammation-GMV-attention relationships, which may represent, respectively, an endophenotype or a resilience process for BD.

This study evaluated the effects of three polysaccharides, xanthan gum (XG), kappa-carrageenan (CA), and guar gum (GG), on the foaming and emulsifying properties of egg white liquid (EWL) and explored the intermolecular interactions and aggregation states in the initial polysaccharide−EWL complex. The results showed that the addition of XG and GG significantly improved the foaming stability of EWL on the one hand, from 66% to 78% and 69%, respectively (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the addition of XG and GG significantly improved the foam uniformity and density, and the average foam area decreased from 0.127 to 0.052 and 0.022 mm2, respectively (p < 0.05). The addition of XG and CA significantly improved the emulsification activity index (from 13.32 to 14.58 and 14.36 m2/mg, respectively, p < 0.05) and the emulsion stability index (from 50.89 to 53.62 and 52.18 min, respectively, p < 0.05), as well as the interfacial protein adsorption at the oil−water interface; it also reduced the creaming index. However, GG negatively affected these indicators. Furthermore, the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions among molecules in EWL due to XG and the electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions among molecules in EWL due to CA ultimately led to the irregular aggregation of egg white proteins. Hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bonds between molecules in EWL−containing GG formed filamentous aggregations of egg white proteins. This work reveals that molecules in the polysaccharide−egg white complexes aggregate by interaction forces, which in turn have different effects on the foaming and emulsifying properties of egg white proteins.

Eggshell color is the most intuitive external feature that affects consumer acceptance. Different eggshell colors are mainly determined by protoporphyrin IX and biliverdin content. The selection of eggshell color by the human eye with an eggshell color fan can be roughly classified. Although more technologically advanced, a colorimeter or spectrophotometer might be of limited use when observing a variety of shell colors, such as brown, olive, green, and blue. This study aimed to provide a convenient and accurate method for predicting the content of eggshell pigments by measuring eggshell color using the Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE) L*a*b* system. The results showed the deepening of eggshell color in brown and blue eggs was correlated with increased eggshell pigment deposition, and eggshell color was significantly positively correlated with eggshell pigment content (P < 0.01). Furthermore, the adjusted R2 of the fitted function was in the range of 0.81 to 0.89, and the Spearman rank correlation coefficient between the predicted and true values was in the range of 0.89 to 0.93. In brief, the L*a*b* method of measuring eggshell color to predict the amount of eggshell pigment deposition is convenient, effective, and promising for layer production.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the spontaneous genetic mutation T329S in flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) on atherosclerosis (AS), fatty liver syndrome (FLS), and adiposity in 90-week-old layers. At 90 weeks of age, 27 FMO3 genotyped Rhode Island White chickens (consisting of nine AA hens, nine AT hens, and nine TT hens) with normal laying performance were selected. The AS lesions, incidence of FLS, fat deposition, metabolic characteristics, and production performance of these egg-layers with different FMO3 genotypes were assessed. The T329S mutation in TT hens reduced the AS lesions (P < 0.01) and altered the plasma metabolic indices more than it did in the AA and AT hens. Furthermore, it reduced the incidence of FLS, hepatic triglyceride deposition (P < 0.05), liver indices (P < 0.05), and fat deposition (P < 0.05) in the subcutis and abdomen of TT hens compared to those of AA and AT hens. Moreover, as an effect of T329S, TT hens laid a higher than average number of eggs and maintained a higher egg-laying rate from 68 to 90 weeks than AA and AT hens. Our study confirmed that the T329S mutation in FMO3 could reduce the development of AS lesions, the incidence of FLS, and fat deposition, which are associated with changes in plasma and hepatic metabolic indices and improvements in the laying performance of older layers. Our results may provide a new strategy for using the T329S mutation to improve the health status and production performance of layers during the late laying period.

In this study, soybean oil, lard and mixed oils were added to the feed in two concentrations (1.5% and 3% of each), resulting in six experimental groups. The control group was fed with a base diet without additions, and used to compare the effects of feeding on production performance and egg quality of laying hens. The results demonstrated that: (1) the 3% supplemented-oils or lard group showed a decrease in laying rate; (2) 1.5% and 3% added-lard significantly increased the total amount of unsaturated fatty acids in eggs, compared to the control group; (3) 1.5% and 3% soybean oil increased the content of mono/polyunsaturated fatty acids, cholesterol, phospholipids and choline in eggs; (4) glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) contents were increased in all groups, being the most evident in the lard-treated group; (5) all experimental groups showed an increase in the content of essential and non-essential amino acids in albumen; (6) 3% oils, especially the mixed oils, damaged the structure of globules of cooked egg yolks. Therefore, the use of 1.5% soybean oil in the feed diet of Hyline brown hens resulted in the most adequate oil to ensure animal health and economic significant improvements in this experiment.

Studies on trimethylamine (TMA) in egg yolk have focused on how it impacts the flavor of eggs, but there has been little focus on its other functions. We designed an in vitro antibacterial test of TMA according to TMA concentrations that covered the TMA contents typically found in egg yolk. The change in TMA content in yolk was analyzed at different storage temperatures and for different storage durations. The known antibacterial components of eggs, including the cuticle quality of the eggshell and the lysozyme activity and content in egg white, were also assessed. The total bacterial count (TBC) of different parts of eggs were detected. The results showed that the inhibitory effect of TMA on Escherichia coli (E. coli) growth increased with increasing TMA concentration, and the yolk TMA content significantly increased with storage duration (p < 0.05). The cuticle quality and lysozyme content and activity significantly decreased with storage time and increasing temperature, accompanied by a significant increase in the TBC on the eggshell surface and in the egg white (p < 0.05). This work reveals a new role for trace TMA in yolks because it reduces the risk of bacterial colonization, especially when the antibacterial function of eggs is gradually weakened during storage.

With the development of a large-scale and intensive production industry, the number of laying hens in China is rapidly increasing. Oils, as an important source of essential fatty acids, can be added to the diet to effectively improve the production performance and absorption of other nutrients. The present review discusses the practical application of different types and qualities of oils in poultry diets and studies the critical effects of these oils on production performance, such as the egg weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and various egg quality parameters, including the albumen height, Haugh units, yolk color, and saturated/unsaturated fatty acids. This article reviews the effects of different dietary oil sources on the production performance and egg quality of laying hens and their potential functional mechanisms and provides a reference for the selection of different sources of oils to include in the diet with the aim of improving egg production. This review thus provides a reference for the application of oils to the diets of laying hens. Future studies are needed to determine how poultry products can be produced with the appropriate proper oils in the diet and without negative effects on production performance and egg quality.
