RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of the most common salivary gland malignancies, mostly occurs in the major and minor salivary glands in the oral and maxillofacial region. The development of ACC in the retromolar pad is extremely rare, which limits establishing proper diagnosis and management. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A patient described a 2-month history of finding a mass behind the lower left posterior teeth. Based on the physical examination and radiographic findings, we got an initial impression of a benign mucocele, the nature of which was to be investigated further. Pathological examination of the resected tissue resulted in a diagnosis of ACC. Follow-up visits showed no recurrence during the subsequent 54 months. DISCUSSION: In cases with an uncertain diagnosis based on medical history, clinical features and imaging examinations, it is important to proceed carefully with the possibility of a tumor in mind. CONCLUSION: ACC in the retromolar pad is rare and can be easily misdiagnosed. Clinical, radiographic, and pathological evidence confirm a definitive diagnosis. Long-term follow-up is important for the full analysis of ACC treatment.

RESUMEN

Food preservation is a critical issue in ensuring food safety and quality. Growing concern around industrial pollution of food and demand for environmentally sustainable food has led to increased interest in developing effective and eco-friendly preservation techniques. Gaseous ClO2 has gained attention for its strong oxidizing properties, high efficacy in microorganism inactivation, and potential for preserving the attributes and nutritional quality of fresh food while avoiding the formation of toxic byproducts or unacceptable levels of residues. However, the widespread use of gaseous ClO2 in the food industry is limited by several challenges. These include large-scale generation, high cost and environmental considerations, a lack of understanding of its mechanism of action, and the need for mathematical models to predict inactivation kinetics. This review aims to provide an overview of the up-to-date research and application of gaseous ClO2 . It covers preparation methods, preservation mechanisms, and kinetic models that predict the sterilizing efficacy of gaseous ClO2 under different conditions. The impacts of gaseous ClO2 on the quality attributes of fresh produce and low-moisture foods, such as seeds, sprouts, and spices, are also summarized. Overall, gaseous ClO2 is a promising preservation approach, and future studies are needed to address the challenges in large-scale generation and environmental considerations and to develop standardized protocols and databases for safe and effective use in the food industry.

RESUMEN

Ophiocordyceps sinensis Berk. is a fungal parasite that parasitizes the larvae of Hepialidae and is endemic to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). The phylogeny and divergence time of O. sinensis and its host insects were analyzed for 137 individuals from 48 O. sinensis populations based on the elongation factor 1 alpha (EF-1α) gene. Lower nucleotide variation, with only 7 and 16 EF-1α haplotypes, was detected in O. sinensis and its host insects, respectively. The isolated and broad distribution patterns coexisted in both O. sinensis and its host insects on the QTP. The divergence time estimates show that O. sinensis and its host insects originated later than 14.33 million years (Myr) and earlier than 23.60 Myr in the Miocene period, and the major differentiation occurred later than 4 Myr. Their origin and differentiation match well with the second and third uplifts of the QTP, respectively. The host insects from the O. sinensis populations distributed around Qinghai Lake are inferred as an ancient and relict species that has survived various geological events of the QTP. It is suitable to estimate the divergence times of both O. sinensis and its host insects from the same individuals using one gene: EF-1α. Our findings of the origin, phylogeny, and evolution of the endemic species also support the epoch of geological events on the QTP.

RESUMEN

Excessive activity of osteoclasts causes many bone-related diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. Agrimophol (AGR), a phenolic compound, originated from Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. In prior studies, AGR is reported to possess schistosomicidal and mycobactericidal activities. However, no reports covered its anti-osteoclastogenesis characteristic. In this study, we found that AGR inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis, bone-resorption, F-actin ring formation, and the mRNA expression of osteoclast-associated genes such as CTSK, TRAP, MMP-9, and ATP6v0d2 in vitro. In addition, AGR suppressed RANKL-induced expression of c-Fos and NFATc1. However, AGR treatment did not affect NF-κB activation and MAPKs phosphorylation in RANKL-stimulated BMMs, which implicated that AGR might not influence the initial expression of NFATc1 mediated by NF-κB and MAPKs signaling. Our results further indicated that AGR did not alter phosphorylation levels of GSK3ß and the expression of calcineurin, which implicated that AGR treatment might not interfere with phosphorylation and de-phosphorylation of NFATc1 mediated by GSK3ß and calcineurin, respectively. B-lymphocyte-induced maturation protein-1 (Blimp1), which was regarded as a transcriptional repressor of negative regulators of osteoclastogenesis, was markedly attenuated in the presence of AGR, leading to the enhanced expression of B-cell lymphoma 6 (Bcl-6). Meanwhile, Blimp1 knockdown in BMMs by siRNA strongly enhanced the expression of Bcl6 and reduced NFATc1 induction by RANKL. These findings suggested that AGR inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation through Blimp1-Bcl-6 signaling mediated modulation of NFATc1 and its target genes. Consistent with these in vitro results, AGR exhibited a protective influence in an in vivo mouse model of LPS-induced bone loss by suppressing excessive osteoclast activity and attenuating LPS-induced bone destruction. Hence, these results identified that AGR could be considered as a potential therapeutic agent against bone lysis disease.

RESUMEN

Ophiocordyceps sinensis Berk. is a fungal parasite that parasitizes the larvae of Hepialidae and is used as a traditional Chinese medicine. However, it is not clear how O. sinensis infects its host. The encoding gene haplotype diversity and predicted function of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR) related to the fungal pathogenicity was analyzed for 219 individuals from 47 O. sinensis populations. Two NADPH CPR genes of O. sinensis were detected and their dominant haplotypes were widely distributed throughout the entire distribution range in Western China. Only 5.43% of all O. sinensis individuals possessed the specific private haplotypes of NADPH CPR-1 and CPR-2 genes. Bioinformatic analyses predicted that the phosphorylation sites, motifs, and domains of NADPH CPR of O. sinensis were different between those encoding by the dominant and private gene haplotypes. The one-to-one match fungus-host correspondence of the same individual suggested that the widely distributed O. sinensis with the dominant NADPH CPR gene haplotypes may strongly infect almost all host insects through a random infection by oral or respiratory pores. Conversely, O. sinensis with the specific private NADPH CPR gene haplotypes is likely to infect only a few corresponding host insects by breaching the cuticle, due to the changed NADPH CPR structure and function.

RESUMEN

Nucleosides are active components in Ophiocordyceps sinensis. All individual nucleoside contents in both fruiting and caterpillar bodies were significantly different among the 24 O. sinensis populations that are distributed across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China. The nucleoside contents of the fruiting and caterpillar bodies show significant positive correlations with the geographical distances of O. sinensis populations, and the nucleoside contents in the O. sinensis populations with the non-dominant fungus-host haplotype associations from isolated geographical areas show significant positive correlations with the genetic distances among those populations based on nrDNA ITS and COI sequences, respectively. The fungus-host associations play important roles in the nucleoside differences of O. sinensis populations.

RESUMEN

SCOPE: Crab is a major source of shellfish allergens. Most studies have focused on allergens in crab muscle (CM) rather than on allergens in crab ovary (CO). This study aimed to identify potential allergens in CO from Eriocheir sinensis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Dot blot and immunoblotting results revealed the differential reactivity of CM and CO extracts to positive sera from patients allergic to crabs. Four CO proteins showed good specific IgE-binding activities in 2-DE/immunoblotting analysis; mass spectrometry identified the proteins as hemocyanin, vitellogenin, ovary development-related protein EJO1and EJO2. The recently identified allergen EJO1 is named 'Eri s 2' in the World Health Organization and International Union of Immunological Societies (WHO/IUIS) allergen nomenclature database. Recombinant Eri s 2 exhibited good reactivity to positive sera, and pre-incubation with recombinant Eri s 2 abrogated the reactivity of positive sera from two patients to CO in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, co-incubation of recombinant Eri s 2 with patient basophils dose-dependently promoted basophil activation, confirming the biological activity of Eri s 2. CONCLUSION: CO tissue is an important allergen source, and Eri s 2 is a new crab allergen. This study provides insights that will be useful for component-resolved diagnostics for crab allergy.
