RESUMEN

Microfluidic devices, which miniaturize cell culture and chemical experiments from lab-scale to microchip dimensions, have gained significant attention in recent years. Extensive research has been conducted on microfluidic mixers, which facilitate the mixing and agitation of chemicals. The "Sidewall-Driven Micromixer" that we are currently developing employs a unique mechanism; it induces a swirling flow within the main chamber by vibrating the silicone wall situated between the main and driving chambers using pressure fluctuations. In an earlier study, we found that Sidewall-Driven Micromixers of a size suitable for small cells could indeed produce this swirling flow. Furthermore, we successfully established concentration gradients within each mixer. However, when attempting to upscale the mixer while maintaining conventional proportions to accommodate larger cell aggregates such as spheroids, the desired swirling flow was not achieved. To address this challenge, we made adjustments to the wall dimensions, aiming to amplify wall deformation and thereby enhance the mixer's driving force. Concurrently, we modified the mixer's shape to ensure that the increased wall deformation would not hinder the fluid flow. These alterations not only improved the mixer's performance but also provided valuable insights for positioning the mixer's neck channel, considering the extent of wall deformation.

RESUMEN

Dispersal from wood to wood is essential for wood-inhabiting fungi and wood-inhabiting insects play an important role in the dispersal success of such fungi. However, it is poorly understood whether wood-inhabiting insects which change the habitats from wood to non-wood environments can contribute to the fungal dispersal. Larvae of most stag beetles (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) are wood feeders, while adults are sap feeders. Female adults of lulcanids possess specialized organs (mycetangia) for transportation of fungal symbionts and harbor specific yeasts (e.g., Scheffersomyces spp.) within. Here, we report that the lucanid Aegus subnitidus harbors non-specific yeasts facultatively in mycetangia. We conducted yeast isolation from mycetangia and hindguts of female adults, in a larval gallery in wood-associated materials, and in female-visiting fermented tree sap using culture-dependent methods. Less than half of the females carried a total of 20 yeast species with small amounts using mycetangia and a female harbored up to five species, suggesting the absence of an intimate association with specific yeasts that are found in other lucanids. Yeast species compositions markedly differed between the larval gallery and sap. Most yeasts from the larval galley exhibited xylose-assimilation abilities, while few yeasts from sap did. Mycetangial yeasts comprised a combination from both sources. In hindguts, most yeasts were found in sap (> 70%) with no yeasts in the larval gallery. Sap-associated yeasts in each female mycetangium were also obtained from the female-visiting sap patch, while mycetangial, larval gallery-associated yeasts were absent from the patch, suggesting the survival success of larval gallery-associated yeasts in mycetangia through sap patches. Therefore, wood-inhabiting insects that possess mycetangia can potentially act as vectors of non-symbiotic wood-inhabiting yeasts dispersing from wood to wood via other environments.

RESUMEN

This report presents a rare case of acute decompensated heart failure with technetium-99m-pyrophosphate accumulation in extracardiac sites, such as chest and abdominal walls, in addition to intense myocardial uptake of the tracer. Subsequently, an abdominal fat pad fine-needle aspiration biopsy, which provided positive findings for transthyretin amyloidosis, was performed. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).

RESUMEN

(Bi1-xLax)(Fe,Co)O3 multiferroic magnetic film were fabricated using pulsed DC (direct current) sputtering technique and demonstrated magnetization reversal by applied electric field. The fabricated (Bi0.41La0.59)(Fe0.75Co0.25)O3 films exhibited hysteresis curves of both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric behavior. The saturated magnetization (Ms) of the multiferroic film was about 70 emu/cm3. The squareness (S) (= remanent magnetization (Mr)/Ms) and coercivity (Hc) of perpendicular to film plane are 0.64 and 4.2 kOe which are larger compared with films in parallel to film plane of 0.5 and 2.5 kOe. The electric and magnetic domain structures of the (Bi0.41La0.59)(Fe0.75Co0.25)O3 film analyzed by electric force microscopy (EFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) were clearly induced with submicron scale by applying a local electric field. This magnetization reversal indicates the future realization of high performance magnetic device with low power consumption.

RESUMEN

Astrocytes exert neuroprotective effects through production of antioxidant molecules and neurotrophic factors. A recent study showed that stimulation of astrocyte serotonin 1A (5-HT1A) receptors promotes astrocyte proliferation and upregulation of the antioxidant molecules metallothionein (MT)-1,2, which protect dopaminergic neurons against oxidative stress. Rotigotine, an anti-parkinsonian drug, can bind to dopamine and 5-HT1A receptors. In this study, we examined neuroprotective effects of rotigotine in models of Parkinson's disease and involvement of astrocyte 5-HT1A receptors in neuroprotective effects of rotigotine against dopaminergic neurodegeneration. Rotigotine increased the number of astrocytes and MT-1,2 expression in cultured astrocytes. Pretreatment with conditioned media from rotigotine-treated astrocytes significantly inhibited 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity. These effects were completely blocked by a 5-HT1A antagonist or MT-1,2 specific antibody. Subcutaneous administration of rotigotine increased MT-1,2 expression in striatal astrocytes and prevented reduction of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of a 6-OHDA-lesioned mouse model of Parkinson's disease. These effects were blocked by co-administration with a 5-HT1A antagonist. These results suggest that rotigotine exerts neuroprotective effects through upregulation of MT expression in astrocytes by targeting 5-HT1A receptors. Our findings provide a possible therapeutic application of rotigotine to prevent dopaminergic neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease.

RESUMEN

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a relatively rare cause of acute coronary syndrome compared with atherosclerotic plaque rupture and predominantly occurs in young women. SCAD is associated with various conditions, such as emotional stress, pregnancy, hormonal therapy, collagen diseases, fibromuscular dysplasia, or vasospasm. Long-term cardiovascular events are common including the recurrence of SCAD. We report a case of SCAD with de novo recurrence at only 4 days after the first attack. .
