AIM: To evaluate ethiodised oil retention of transarterial embolisation using ethiodised oil (ethiodised oil marking) before computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous cryoablation (PCA) according to renal cell carcinoma (RCC) subtype. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ethiodised oil marking was performed 1-3 days before PCA in 99 patients with 99 RCCs from 2016 to 2020. Ethiodised oil retention on CT images was evaluated retrospectively and CT attenuation values in the tumour were measured. Regions of interest (ROI) were placed on the tumours to calculate: average (ROI-average), maximal (ROI-max), minimum (ROI-min), and standard deviation (ROI-SD). Qualitative scores comprising a five-point scale (5, excellent; 1, poor) were evaluated for the retention scores (RS) of ethiodised oil in the tumour (ethiodised oil-RS) and the visualisation scores (VS) of the boundary between the tumour and renal parenchyma (boundary-VS). RESULTS: The histological subtypes comprised clear cell (ccRCC; n=85), papillary (pRCC; n=6), and chromophobe/oncocytoma renal cell carcinoma (chrRCC; n=8). The mean ROI-average, ROI-max, and ROI-SD were significantly higher in ccRCCs than in chrRCCs and pRCCs (p<0.05). The mean ethiodised oil-RS was significantly lower in pRCCs than in ccRCCs (p=0.039), and the mean boundary-VS was >4 in all subtypes. Even with poor intratumour ethiodised oil retention (n=6), sufficient boundary-VS was obtained due to "inverted marking." All PCA procedures were completed without additional intravenous contrast material injection at the time of PCA. CONCLUSION: Regardless of the tumour subtypes, ethiodised oil marking aids in visualising the boundary between the tumour and parenchyma on non-contrast CT in PCA.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are self-assemblies of metal ions and organic ligands, provide a tunable platform to search a new state of matter. A two-dimensional (2D) perfect kagome lattice, whose geometrical frustration is a key to realizing quantum spin liquids, has been formed in the π - d conjugated 2D MOF [Cu3(C6S6)] n (Cu-BHT). The recent discovery of its superconductivity with a critical temperature T c of 0.25 kelvin raises fundamental questions about the nature of electron pairing. Here, we show that Cu-BHT is a strongly correlated unconventional superconductor with extremely low superfluid density. A nonexponential temperature dependence of superfluid density is observed, indicating the possible presence of superconducting gap nodes. The magnitude of superfluid density is much smaller than those in conventional superconductors and follows the Uemura's relation of strongly correlated superconductors. These results imply that the unconventional superconductivity in Cu-BHT originates from electron correlations related to spin fluctuations of kagome lattice.

Os óleos vegetais encapsulados podem ser extraídos a frio e ter como origem fontes não convencionais, reconhecidos por preservarem compostos bioativos característicos e, alguns deles, serem fontes de ácidos graxos essenciais. No entanto, são produtos geralmente onerosos e por este motivo, passíveis de adulteração com óleos de menor qualidade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a identidade e a contaminação por hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos (HPAs) de óleos encapsulados. Foram avaliadas catorze amostras, de diferentes tipos e marcas, comercializadas na cidade de São Paulo. Os ensaios realizados incluíram perfil de ácidos graxos e HPAs [benzo(a)antraceno, criseno, benzo(b)fluoranteno e benzo(a)pireno]. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the hop-derived polyphenol isoxanthohumol suppresses insulin resistance by changing the intestinal microbiota. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice (7 weeks of age) were divided into five groups (n = 9-10): Normal Diet (ND), High Fat Diet (HFD), HFD + low dose isoxanthohumol (0.01%IX), HFD + medium dose isoxanthohumol (0.03% IX), and HFD + high dose isoxanthohumol (0.1% IX). Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) were performed at 4 and 8 weeks, and insulin tolerance tests (ITTs) were performed at 13 weeks. 16S rRNA gene sequencing analyses revealed the fecal microbiota profiles, and the relative abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila and Clostridium cluster XI was calculated by qRT-PCR. Plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels were measured by ELISA, and mRNA expression levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-1ß in epididymal adipose tissues were measured by qRT-PCR. RESULTS: Isoxanthohumol showed antibacterial activity towards several bacterial species and mitigated impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance induced by the HFD in a dose-dependent manner, as shown by OGTTs and ITTs. The concentration of phylum Verrucomicrobia bacteria dramatically increased in the 0.1% IX group, the relative abundance of A. muciniphila increased, and that of Clostridium cluster XI decreased. Moreover, the intake of isoxanthohumol decreased the levels of plasma LPS and mRNA expression of TNF-α and IL-1ß in epididymal adipose tissues. CONCLUSIONS: We found that isoxanthohumol can suppress HFD-induced insulin resistance by changing the intestinal microbiota and reducing the expression of inflammation factors.

Photodynamic detection using 5-aminolevulinic acid has been used to identify the surgical margins during resection of human primary brain tumours. Although there are some reports on its use in malignant tumours in veterinary medicine, it has never been used for primary brain tumours. Here we describe a canine glioblastoma that was detected at autopsy with protoporphyrin IX fluorescence induced by orally administered 5-aminolevulinic acid. The fluorescence was strongest towards the centre of the lesion and was absent in normal brain tissue. Moreover, the fluorescence findings were consistent with MRI and histopathological findings. Our findings suggest that photodynamic detection using 5-aminolevulinic acid might be useful for intraoperative fluorescence-guided resection of malignant gliomas in dogs.

RESUMEN

Intracranial abscess is a rare but life-threatening disease. There have been no reports on intracranial abscess induced by the residual primary tooth and the impacted successive permanent tooth with infection. We report on an interesting case of a 29-year-old man suffering from an epidural abscess, potentially caused by an infection of the residual primary maxillary right canine and the impacted permanent maxillary right canine. The patient recovered completely after prolonged antibiotic treatment and extraction of both of the suspected teeth. Fusobacterium sp. was isolated from the culture of a peripheral blood sample. This case alerts us to realize that the lack of suitable and timely intervention in oral conditions might produce a harmful effect on general health.

The goal of the present study was to determine the effect of sole horn thickness (SHT) and sole horn hardness (SHD) on ultrasonographic visualization of sole structures in the inner and outer claws of 150 Holstein-Friesian cows, and to evaluate different ultrasound frequencies for this purpose. Ultrasonographic views of the sole structure were considered complete when 3 echogenic lines, representing the ventral surface of the sole horn, the borders of the sole horn and soft-tissue layer, and the ventral surface of the distal phalanx, were seen. The proportion of complete ultrasonographic views of the sole structures, designated as the ultrasonographic visualization proportion (UVP), and the measurement errors of SHT were evaluated by comparing images from computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography. The latter images were generated using 3 different probes, frequencies of 6.5 and 5.0 MHz, and 2 different ultrasound machines (#1 and #2) to assess the apex, middle, and heel regions of the claws. The UVP were 60.8 to 77.9% for the 6.5-MHz probe in ultrasound machine #1 (probe A), which were lower than those (>90%) for both the 5.0-MHz probe in ultrasound machine #1 (probe B) and the 5.0-MHz probe in ultrasound machine #2 (probe C). The UVP was significantly lower in claws with an SHD ≥50 units than in claws with an SHD <40 or 40 to <50 units (UVP: 77.1% compared with 93.7 and 91.4%, respectively) when measured with probe B. In claws with an SHT <10 mm, the UVP was significantly lower when SHD was ≥50 units compared with <40 or 40 to >50 units; the values were 69.0% versus 91.3 and 85.9%, respectively, for probe A, and 89.7% versus 100 and 100%, respectively, for probe B. When SHT were measured by either probes A or B in ultrasound machine #1, the proportions of claws in which ultrasonographic values were within a ±1 mm range compared with the values obtained by CT were 84.9 to 91.3% for CT-determined SHT <5 mm, 66.7 to 71.9% for CT-determined SHT 5 to <7 mm, 28.9 to 51.2% for CT-determined SHT 7 to <10 mm, and 6.2 to 19.7% for CT-determined SHT ≥10 mm. The data indicated that increased SHT was associated with a decrease in ultrasonographic measurement accuracy. In claws with an SHT <5 mm, the high proportion of ultrasonographic values that were accurate within a ±1 mm range suggests that this imaging modality would be useful in cows with thin soles.

A multiple-hydrogen-bond approach was applied to shorten Pt-X-Pt distances in Cl- and Br-bridged Pt chain complexes. [Pt(dabdOH)2Cl]Cl2 (5) and [Pt(dabdOH)2Br]Br2 (6) (dabdOH = (2 S,3 S)-2,3-diaminobutane-1,4-diol) contain hydroxy groups, which form additional hydrogen bonds with counteranions. 5 has the shortest Pt-Cl-Pt distance (5.0747(8) Å) of all Cl-bridged Pt chain complexes reported to date. Furthermore, the smallest optical gap (1.45 eV for 5 and 1.19 eV for 6) in any Cl- or Br-bridged Pt chain complex was achieved. 6 has the highest electrical conductivity (1.9 × 10-5 S cm-1 at room temperature) of all Br-bridged Pt chain complexes. This study shows that the introduction of additional hydrogen bonds between the ligands and halides is effective to enhance the electronic properties of halogen-bridged metal complexes.

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid displays the fractionalization of quantum spins into Majorana fermions. The emergent Majorana edge current is predicted to manifest itself in the form of a finite thermal Hall effect, a feature commonly discussed in topological superconductors. Here we report on thermal Hall conductivity κ_{xy} measurements in α-RuCl_{3}, a candidate Kitaev magnet with the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. In a spin-liquid (Kitaev paramagnetic) state below the temperature characterized by the Kitaev interaction J_{K}/k_{B}∼80 K, positive κ_{xy} develops gradually upon cooling, demonstrating the presence of highly unusual itinerant excitations. Although the zero-temperature property is masked by the magnetic ordering at T_{N}=7 K, the sign, magnitude, and T dependence of κ_{xy}/T at intermediate temperatures follows the predicted trend of the itinerant Majorana excitations.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Arm circumference (AC) and nutritional screening tools have been shown to have prognostic capability in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to compare the prognostic predictive capabilities of AC and nutritional screening tools in older patients with CVD. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study population consisted of 949 admitted patients ≥60 years old with CVD. Patients underwent AC measurement and nutritional screening before hospital discharge. We used the controlling nutritional status index (CONUT), the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI), and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) as nutritional screening tools. The end point of the study was all-cause mortality. The mean age of the study population was 72.3 ± 7.2 years, and 68.2% of the patients were male. A total of 130 deaths occurred over a median follow-up period of 2.2 years (interquartile range, 1.1-3.8 years). After adjusting for other prognostic factors, AC (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.59; p < 0.001), CONUT (HR: 0.82; p = 0.016), GNRI (HR: 0.77; p = 0.040), and PNI (HR: 0.80; p = 0.014) were significant predictors of mortality. However, adding AC to the multivariate-adjusted model (0.739 vs. 0.714, respectively; p = 0.037), but not CONUT, GNRI, or PNI (0.724, 0.717, and 0.723 vs. 0.714; p = 0.072, p = 0.306, and p = 0.127, respectively), significantly increased the area under the curve on receiver operating characteristic curve. CONCLUSIONS: AC, but not nutritional screening tools, plays a complementary role to preexisting prognostic factors for predicting prognosis in older patients with CVD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of paraoxonase 1 (PON1) are known to be associated with the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and periodontitis. However, the effects of PON1 on the osteoblastic differentiation of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells are unclear. In this study, we examined the effects of PON1 on the osteoblastic differentiation of PDL cells, and analysed the role of PON1 SNPs on the pathogenesis of aggressive periodontitis (AgP) in the Japanese population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Human PDL (HPDL) cells were exposed to the PON1 plasmid and PON1 inhibitor, 2-hydroxyquinoline, and cultured in mineralization medium. Expression of calcification-related genes and calcified nodule formation were assessed by real-time PCR, an alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) activity assay and Alizarin red staining. Sanger sequencing was performed to evaluate whether PON1 SNPs are associated with the pathogenesis of AgP in Japanese people. RESULTS: During osteoblastic differentiation of HPDL cells, expression of PON1 mRNA increased in a time-dependent manner. PON1 stimulated an increase in expression of mRNA for calcification-related genes, as well as ALPase activity. In contrast, 2-hydroxyquinoline clearly inhibited the expression of calcification-related genes, ALPase activity and calcified nodule formation in HPDL cells. Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference in the minor allele frequency of PON1 SNP rs854560 between the Japanese control database and patients with AgP in the Japanese population (P = .0190). CONCLUSION: PON1 induced cytodifferentiation and mineralization of HPDL cells, and PON1 SNP rs854560 may be associated with the pathogenesis of AgP in the Japanese population.

Strongly enhanced quantum fluctuations often lead to a rich variety of quantum-disordered states. Developing approaches to enhance quantum fluctuations may open paths to realize even more fascinating quantum states. Here, we demonstrate that a coupling of localized spins with the zero-point motion of hydrogen atoms, that is, proton fluctuations in a hydrogen-bonded organic Mott insulator provides a different class of quantum spin liquids (QSLs). We find that divergent dielectric behavior associated with the approach to hydrogen-bond order is suppressed by the quantum proton fluctuations, resulting in a quantum paraelectric (QPE) state. Furthermore, our thermal-transport measurements reveal that a QSL state with gapless spin excitations rapidly emerges upon entering the QPE state. These findings indicate that the quantum proton fluctuations give rise to a QSL-a quantum-disordered state of magnetic and electric dipoles-through the coupling between the electron and proton degrees of freedom.

A distinct thermal Hall signal is observed in a quantum spin liquid candidate Ba_{3}CuSb_{2}O_{9}. The transverse thermal conductivity shows a power-law temperature dependence below 50 K, where a spin gap opens. We suggest that because of the very low longitudinal thermal conductivity and the thermal Hall signals, a phonon Hall effect is induced by strong phonon scattering of orphan Cu^{2+} spins formed in the random domains of the Cu^{2+}-Sb^{5+} dumbbells in Ba_{3}CuSb_{2}O_{9}.

Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 3 ( Smpd3), which encodes neutral sphingomyelinase 2 (nSMase2), is a key molecule for skeletal development as well as for the cytodifferentiation of odontoblasts and alveolar bone. However, the effects of nSMase2 on the cytodifferentiation of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells are still unclear. In this study, the authors analyzed the effects of Smpd3 on the cytodifferentiation of human PDL (HPDL) cells. The authors found that Smpd3 increases the mRNA expression of calcification-related genes, such as alkaline phosphatase (ALPase), type I collagen, osteopontin, Osterix (Osx), and runt-related transcription factor (Runx)-2 in HPDL cells. In contrast, GW4869, an inhibitor of nSMase2, clearly decreased the mRNA expression of ALPase, type I collagen, and osteocalcin in HPDL cells, suggesting that Smpd3 enhances HPDL cytodifferentiation. Next, the authors used exome sequencing to evaluate the genetic variants of Smpd3 in a Japanese population with aggressive periodontitis (AgP). Among 44 unrelated subjects, the authors identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs145616324, in Smpd3 as a putative genetic variant for AgP among Japanese people. Moreover, Smpd3 harboring this SNP did not increase the sphingomyelinase activity or mRNA expression of ALPase, type I collagen, osteopontin, Osx, or Runx2, suggesting that this SNP inhibits Smpd3 such that it has no effect on the cytodifferentiation of HPDL cells. These data suggest that Smpd3 plays a crucial role in maintaining the homeostasis of PDL tissue.

To demonstrate the effect of climatic elements on Campylobacter colonization in broiler chickens reared in Japan, the correlation between Campylobacter isolated from chickens (191 of 236 flocks, 80.9%) between 2008 and 2012 and climatic elements was analyzed by logistic regression. We divided the rearing process into 13 terms of 5 d each (total: 65 d). Terms were numbered backwards, wherein a 0-term lag was considered as the sampling day plus 4 d before sampling; 1-term lag was the 5-d term before the 0-term lag, and so on, until the 12-term lag. We obtained climatic data tracing back from the 0-term to the 12-term lags. For evaluation in each season, we divided chickens reared during periods of rising temperature (spring, summer) and decreasing temperature (autumn, winter). Air temperature showed a positive correlation with Campylobacter colonization from the 0- to 12-term lags in chickens reared during the period of rising temperature (odds ratio [OR], 1.069 to 1.104), and from the 0- to 4- and 6-term lags (OR, 1.079 to 1.105) in chickens reared during the period of decreasing temperature. The strong positive effect of air temperature on Campylobacter colonization, particularly during the period of rising temperature, may be associated with the effect on the Campylobacter environmental sources and/or vectors. A positive correlation was observed between Campylobacter colonization and humidity when chicken houses were empty and new chicks were introduced (from the 9- to 12-term lags) during the period of decreasing temperature (OR, 1.076 to 1.141). Thus, high humidity would be an important factor causing carry-over of Campylobacter infection during the period of decreasing temperature. We also found that solar radiation increased Campylobacter colonization during the period of decreasing temperature, from the 2- to 8-term lags, except for the 4- and 5-term lags, in Japan. The results of this study demonstrate the effects of air temperature, humidity, and solar radiation on Campylobacter colonization in broiler chickens, and are potentially important for developing strategies to reduce the risk of Campylobacter contamination in broiler chickens.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most fatal types of cancer and the 5-year survival rate is only 5%. Several studies have suggested that cancer stem cells (CSCs) are thought to be involved in recurrence and metastasis and so it is essential to establish an approach targeting CSCs. Here we have demonstrated that cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) suppressed CD44 expression and the properties of CSCs in PDAC. Microarray analysis suggested that cGMP inhibited Forkhead box O3 (FOXO3), which is known as a tumor suppressor. Surprisingly, our data demonstrated that FOXO3 is essential for CD44 expression and the properties of CSCs. Our data also indicated that patients with high FOXO3 activation signatures had poor prognoses. This evidence suggested that cGMP induction and FOXO3 inhibition could be ideal candidates for pancreatic CSC.

RESUMEN

The coexistence and competition between superconductivity and electronic orders, such as spin or charge density waves, have been a central issue in high transition-temperature (Tc) superconductors. Unlike other iron-based superconductors, FeSe exhibits nematic ordering without magnetism whose relationship with its superconductivity remains unclear. Moreover, a pressure-induced fourfold increase of Tc has been reported, which poses a profound mystery. Here we report high-pressure magnetotransport measurements in FeSe up to ∼15 GPa, which uncover the dome shape of magnetic phase superseding the nematic order. Above ∼6 GPa the sudden enhancement of superconductivity (Tc≤38.3 K) accompanies a suppression of magnetic order, demonstrating their competing nature with very similar energy scales. Above the magnetic dome, we find anomalous transport properties suggesting a possible pseudogap formation, whereas linear-in-temperature resistivity is observed in the normal states of the high-Tc phase above 6 GPa. The obtained phase diagram highlights unique features of FeSe among iron-based superconductors, but bears some resemblance to that of high-Tc cuprates.
