RESUMEN

The laser-induced damage of ultraviolet fused silica optics is a critical factor that limits the performance enhancement of high-power laser facility. Currently, wet etching technology based on hydrofluoric acid (HF) can effectively eliminate absorbing impurities and subsurface defects, thereby significantly enhancing the damage resistance of fused silica optics. However, with an increase in the operating fluence, the redeposition defects generated during wet etching gradually become the primary bottleneck that restricts its performance improvement. The composition and morphology of redeposition defects were initially identified in this study, followed by an elucidation of their formation mechanism. A mitigation strategy was then proposed, which combines a reduction in the generation of precipitation with an acceleration of the precipitation dissolution process. Additionally, we systematically investigated the influence of various process parameters such as extrinsic impurity, etching depth, and megasonic excitation on the mitigation of deposition defects. Furthermore, a novel multiple-step dynamic etching method was developed. Through comprehensive characterization techniques, it has been confirmed that this new etching process not only effectively mitigate redeposition defects under low fluence conditions but also exhibits significant inhibition effects on high fluence precursors. Consequently, it significantly enhances the laser damage resistance performance of fused silica optics.

RESUMEN

Background: The accurate assessment of lymph node metastasis (LNM) is crucial for the staging, treatment, and prognosis of lung cancer. In this study, we explored the potential value of dual-layer spectral detector computed tomography (SDCT) quantitative parameters in the prediction of LNM in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: In total, 91 patients presenting with solid solitary pulmonary nodules (8 mm < diameter ≤30 mm) with pathologically confirmed NSCLC (57 without LNM, and 34 with LNM) were enrolled in the study. The patients' basic clinical data and the SDCT morphological features were analyzed using the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. The Mann-Whitney U-test and independent sample t-test were used to analyze the differences in multiple SDCT quantitative parameters between the non-LNM and LNM groups. The diagnostic efficacy of the corresponding parameters in predicting LNM in NSCLC was evaluated by plotting the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the independent predictive factors of LNM in NSCLC. Interobserver agreement was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Bland-Altman plots. Results: There were no significant differences between the non-LNM and LNM groups in terms of age, sex, and smoking history. Lesion size and vascular convergence sign differed significantly between the two groups (P<0.05), but there were no significant differences in the six tumor markers. The SDCT quantitative parameters [SAR40keV, SAR70keV, Δ40keV, Δ70keV, CER40keV, CER70keV, NEF40keV, NEF70keV, λ, normalized iodine concentration (NIC) and NZeff] were significantly higher in the non-LNM group than the LNM group (P<0.05). The ROC analysis showed that CER40keV, NIC, and CER70keV had higher diagnostic efficacy than other quantitative parameters in predicting LNM [areas under the curve (AUCs) =0.794, 0.791, and 0.783, respectively]. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that size, λ, and NIC were independent predictive factors of LNM. The combination of size, λ, and NIC had the highest diagnostic efficacy (AUC =0.892). The interobserver repeatability of the SDCT quantitative and derived quantitative parameters in the study was good (ICC: 0.801-0.935). Conclusions: The SDCT quantitative parameters combined with the clinical data have potential value in predicting LNM in NSCLC. The size + λ + NIC combined parameter model could further improve the prediction efficacy of LNM.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Anti-hypertensive agents are one of the most frequently used drugs worldwide. However, no blood pressure-lowering strategy is superior to placebo with respect to survival in diabetic hypertensive patients. Previous findings show that Wnt co-receptors LDL receptor-related proteins 5 and 6 (LRP5/6) can directly bind to several G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Because angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) is the most important GPCR in regulating hypertension, this study examines the possible mechanistic association between LRP5/6 and their binding protein Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) and activation of the AT1R and further hypothesizes that the LRP5/6-GPCR interaction may affect hypertension and potentiate cardiac impairment in the setting of diabetes. METHODS: The roles of serum DKK1 and DKK1-LRP5/6 signalling in diabetic injuries were investigated in human and diabetic mice. RESULTS: Blood pressure up-regulation positively correlated with serum DKK1 elevations in humans. Notably, LRP5/6 physically and functionally interacted with AT1R. The loss of membrane LRP5/6 caused by injection of a recombinant DKK1 protein or conditional LRP5/6 deletions resulted in AT1R activation and hypertension, as well as ß-arrestin1 activation and cardiac impairment, possibly because of multiple GPCR alterations. Importantly, unlike commonly used anti-hypertensive agents, administration of the anti-DKK1 neutralizing antibody effectively prevented diabetic cardiac impairment in mice. CONCLUSIONS: These findings establish a novel DKK1-LRP5/6-GPCR pathway in inducing diabetic injuries and may resolve the long-standing conundrum as to why elevated blood DKK1 has deleterious effects. Thus, monitoring and therapeutic elimination of blood DKK1 may be a promising strategy to attenuate diabetic injuries.

RESUMEN

To investigate the comprehensive effects of the Al and Zr element contents on the microstructure evolution of the AlNbTiVZr series light-weight refractory high entropy alloys (HEAs), five samples were studied. Samples with different compositions were designated Al1.5NbTiVZr, Al1.5NbTiVZr0.5, AlNbTiVZr, AlNbTiVZr0.5, and Al0.5NbTiVZr0.5. The results demonstrated that the actual density of the studied HEA samples ranged from 5.291 to 5.826 g·cm-3. The microstructure of these HEAs contains a solid solution phase with a BCC structure and a Laves phase. The Laves phase was further identified as the ZrAlV intermetallic compound by TEM observations. The microstructure of the AlNbTiVZr series HEAs was affected by both the Al and Zr element contents, whereas the Zr element showed a more dominant effect due to Zr atoms occupying the core position of the ZrAlV Laves phase (C14 structure). Therefore, the as-cast Al0.5NbTiVZr0.5 sample exhibits the best room temperature compression property with a compression strength (σp) of 1783 MPa and an engineering strain of 28.8% due to having the lowest ZrAlV intermetallic compound area fraction (0.7%), as characterized by the EBSD technique.

RESUMEN

Hollow bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) formed from metal oxide NP templates are widely used catalysts for hydrogen evolution and CO2 reduction reactions. Despite their importance in catalysis, the details of how these NPs form on the NP templates remain unclear. Here, using in situ liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging, we describe the conversion of Cu2O template NPs to hollow PdCu NPs. Our observations show that a polycrystalline PdCu shell forms on the surface of the template via a galvanic replacement reaction while the template undergoes anisotropic etching. This study provides important insights into the synthesis of hollow metallic nanostructures from metal oxide templates.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The ultimate goal of medical care is to eradicate disease and restore normality to a person's life. Quality of life (QOL) is a concern as dermatologists and researchers strive to find better drug treatments. However, there have been few reports on the factors associated with QOL among Chinese people with psoriasis. METHODS: A total of 185 people with psoriasis were surveyed to assess their sociodemographic status, disease-related information, psychosocial status, and QOL. The questionnaires included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Athens Insomnia Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Psychosocial Adaptation Questionnaire of Chronic Skin Disease and the Dermatology Life Quality Index. Multiple stepwise regression and path analysis were used to study the factors associated with QOL among Chinese people with psoriasis and to analyse the relationship between them. RESULTS: The results showed that the presence of anxiety/depression, lesion area, sleep disorders, psychosocial adaptation, and sex could jointly predict 62.1% of the variance in QOL among Chinese people with psoriasis. According to previous theories and the literature, a path model was established for five variables. Four internal variables could be effectively explained. The values of the explanatory variables were 62.1% (F(1056) = 61.020, p = 0.000) for QOL, 71.8% (F(2433) = 117.370, p = 0.000) for anxiety/depression, 44.0% (F(660) = 36.935, p = 0.000) for sleep disorders, and 66.9% (F(6886) = 93.556, p = 0.000) for psychosocial adaptation. The path analysis confirmed that 9 paths were consistent with the predicted path, and 3 paths were not confirmed. CONCLUSION: To improve QOL among Chinese people with psoriasis, attention should be given to the presence of anxiety/depression, lesion area, sleep disorders, psychosocial adaptation and sex differences. Therefore, health care programs for psoriasis should include physical, psychological and social aspects.

RESUMEN

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of local oxygen therapy combined with vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) on the healing of stage IV pressure ulcers sacrococcygeal. In this prospective study, we included a total of 98 patients with stage IV sacrococcygeal pressure ulcers in our hospital between February 2021 and June 2022. The patients enrolled were randomly and equally divided into two groups: the study group (undergoing local oxygen therapy combined with VSD treatment) and the control group (receiving conventional treatment). The wound healing time and hospital stay were compared between the two groups. Additionally, the wound area, tissue type, wound exudation and pain intensity were assessed before treatment, 10, 20, 30 and 40 days after treatment. The incidence of complications was also calculated. The study group demonstrated significantly shorter wound healing time and hospital stays compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Before treatment, there were no significant differences in terms of wound area, tissue type and wound exudation between the two groups (p > 0.05); after 10, 20, 30 and 40 days of treatment, however, evidently smaller wound areas, improved tissue types and reduced wound exudation were observed in the study group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the study group exhibited increased microvascular count compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference in pain intensity between the two groups (p > 0.05), whereas markedly lower pain intensity was seen in the study group than in the control group after 10, 20, 30 and 40 days of treatment (p < 0.05). The incidence of complications did not significantly differ between the two groups after 40 days of treatment (p > 0.05). Local oxygen therapy combined with VSD was found to effectively accelerate the healing process of stage IV sacrococcygeal pressure ulcers, leading to shorter hospital stays and improved patient prognosis. This combined therapy shows promise for widespread application in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is a hallmark of various cardiovascular diseases (CVD) including chronic heart failure (HF) and an important target for the treatment of these diseases. Aberrant activation of Angiotensin II (Ang II)/AT1R signaling pathway is one of the main triggers of cardiac hypertrophy, which further gives rise to excessive inflammation that is mediated by the key transcription factor NF-κB. Resveratrol (REV) is a natural polyphenol with multiple anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects, however the ability of REV in preventing Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy in combination with NF-κB signaling activation remains unclear. METHODS: Murine models of cardiac hypertrophy was conducted via implantation of Ang II osmotic pumps. Primary neonatal rat cardiomyocyte and heart tissues were examined to determine the effect and underlying mechanism of REV in preventing Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy. RESULTS: Administrations of REV significantly prevented Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy, as well as robustly attenuated Ang II-induced cardiac fibrosis, and cardiac dysfunction. Furthermore, REV not only directly prevented Ang II/AT1R signal transductions, but also prevented Ang II-induced expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines and activation of NF-κB signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides important new mechanistic insight into the cardioprotective effects of REV in preventing Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy via inhibiting adverse NF-κB signaling activation. Our findings further suggest the therapeutic potential of REV as a promising drug for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure.

RESUMEN

The sole situation of semi-crystalline structure induced single performance remarkably limits the green cryogels in the application of soft devices due to uncontrolled freezing field. Here, a facile strategy for achieving multifunctionality of cryogels is proposed using total amorphization of polymer. Through precisely lowering the freezing point of precursor solutions with an antifreezing salt, the suppressed growth of ice is achieved, creating an unusually weak and homogenous aggregation of polymer chains upon freezing, thereby realizing the tunable amorphization of polymer and the coexistence of free and hydrogen bonding hydroxyl groups. Such multi-scale microstructures trigger the integrated properties of tissue-like ultrasoftness (Young's modulus <10 kPa) yet stretchability, high transparency (~92%), self-adhesion, and instantaneous self-healing (<0.3 s) for cryogels, along with superior ionic-conductivity, antifreezing (-58 °C) and water-retention abilities, pushing the development of skin-like cryogel electronics. These concepts open an attractive branch for cryogels that adopt regulated crystallization behavior for on-demand functionalities.

RESUMEN

Estradiol-17ß (E2) and aromatase inhibitor (AI) exposure can change the phenotypic sex of fish gonads. To investigated whether alterations in DNA methylation is involved in this process, the level of genome-wide DNA methylation in Takifugu rubripes gonads was quantitatively analyzed during the E2-induced feminization and AI-induced masculinization processes in this study. The methylation levels of the total cytosine (C) in control-XX(C-XX), control-XY (C-XY), E2-treated-XY (E-XY) and AI-treated-XX (AI-XX) were 9.11%, 9.19%, 8.63% and 9.23%, respectively. In the C-XX vs C-XY comparison, 4,196 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) overlapped with the gene body of 2,497 genes and 608 DMRs overlapped with the promoter of 575 genes. In the E-XY vs C-XY comparison, 6,539 DMRs overlapped with the gene body of 3,416 genes and 856 DMRs overlapped with the promoter of 776 genes. In the AI-XX vs C-XX comparison, 2,843 DMRs overlapped with the gene body of 1,831 genes and 461 DMRs overlapped with the promoter of 421 genes. Gonadal genomic methylation mainly occurred at CG sites and the genes that overlapped with DMRs on CG context were most enriched in the signaling pathways related to gonad differentiation, such as the Wnt, TGF-ß, MAPK, CAM and GnRH pathways. The DNA methylation levels of steroid synthesis genes and estrogen receptor genes promoter or gene body were negative correlated with their expression. After bisulfite sequencing verification, the DNA methylation level of the amhr2 promoter in XY was increased after E2 treatment, which consistent with the data from the genome-wide DNA methylation sequencing. In C-XY group, the expression of amhr2 was significantly higher than that in E-XY (p < 0.05). Additionally, dnmt1, which is responsible for methylation maintenance, expressed at similar level in four groups (p > 0.05). dnmt3, tet2, and setd1b, which were responsible for methylation modification, expressed at significantly higher levels in E-XY compared to the C-XY (p < 0.05). Dnmt3 and tet2 were expressed at significantly higher levels in AI-XX than that in C-XX (p < 0.05). These results indicated that E2 and AI treatment lead to the aberrant genome-wide DNA methylation level and expression level of dnmt3, tet2, and setd1b in T. rubripes gonad.

RESUMEN

Process economy and dynamic controllability are critical for DMC/MeOH separation via the PSD process. In this paper, rigorous steady-state and dynamic simulations of atmospheric-pressurized process for DMC/MeOH separation with no, partial, and full heat integration have been carried out with Aspen Plus and Aspen Dynamics. Further investigations have been conducted into the economic design and dynamic controllability of the three neat systems. Simulation results indicated that: the separation process via full and partial heat integration provided TAC savings of 39.2 and 36.2%, respectively, compared to that of no heat integration; the non-heat-integrated system displays good dynamic performance, critical dynamic penalties were demonstrated for both partial and full heat integration processes, while the partial one exhibited a more robust control except for precisely maintaining XB2(DMC); a PCTC scheme with a CC/TC cascade control was proposed to precisely maintain the product concentration for the fully heat-integrated PSD process. A comparison of the economy between atmospheric-pressurized and pressurized-atmospheric sequences indicated that the former is more energy efficient. Further, a comparison of the economy between atmospheric-pressurized and pressurized-atmospheric sequences indicated that the former is more energy efficient. This study will provide new insights into the energy efficiency and has some implications for design and control of DMC/MeOH separation in the industrialization process.

RESUMEN

Bimetallic nanoparticle (NP) catalysts are widely used in many heterogeneous gas-based reactions because they often outperform their monometallic counterparts. During these reactions, NPs often undergo structural changes, which impact their catalytic activity. Despite the important role of the structure in the catalytic activity, many aspects of how a reactive gaseous environment affects the structure of bimetallic nanocatalysts are still lacking. Here, using gas-cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM), it is shown that during a CO oxidation reaction over PdCu alloy NPs, the selective oxidation of Cu causes the segregation of Cu and transforms the NPs into Pd-CuO NPs. The segregated NPs are very stable and have high activity for the conversion of CO into CO2 . Based on the observations, the segregation of Cu from Cu-based alloys during a redox reaction is likely to be general and may have a positive impact on the catalytic activity. Hence, it is believed that similar insights based on direct observation of the reactions under relevant reactive conditions are critical both for understanding and designing high-performance catalysts.

RESUMEN

The 2198 Al-Li alloy has unique superiority in mechanical performance and has been extensively used in the aerospace field. In this study, the hot deformation behavior of the 2198 Al-Li alloy was investigated on a Gleeble-1500 thermomechanical simulator with a strain rate of 0.01-10 s-1 in the temperature range of 330-510 °C. The Arrhenius constitutive equation of the alloy was established based on the true stress-strain curves to describe the rheology behaviors during the deformation of the alloy. The processing maps under the strain of 0.2-0.8 were constructed, which indicates the efficiency of power dissipation and instability of the deformed alloy. It was found that the instability domains are more likely to occur in the regions of low deformation temperature and high strain rate, corresponding to the high Zener-Hollomon (Z) parameter. The microstructure evolution of the studied alloy with different Z parameters was characterized. Then, the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior was studied by electron backscatter diffraction, and the misorientation angle of deformed specimens was analyzed. The effect of different deformation temperatures and strain rates on the microstructure of the alloy and the behavior of dislocations and precipitations were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The results demonstrate that continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and geomatic dynamic recrystallization (GDRX) mainly occur at the deformation conditions of a low Z value, and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) is likely to occur with increasing Z values.

RESUMEN

In this study, the effects of Cu addition on artificial age hardening behavior and mechanical properties of Al-1.2Mg-1.2Si-(xCu) alloy was investigated quantitatively and qualitatively by Vickers hardness, tensile test, and transmission electron microscope. The results indicated that Cu addition enhanced the aging response of the alloy at 175 °C. With the increase in Cu content, the time for the alloys to reach peak aging decreased from 12 h to 10 h and 8 h. The tensile strength of the alloy was obviously improved with Cu added in which was 421 MPa of 0Cu alloy, 448 MPa of 0.18Cu alloy, and 459 MPa of 0.37Cu alloy. The results of TEM observation revealed that the addition of 0.37Cu changed the aging precipitation sequence of the alloy, in which the precipitation sequence of 0Cu and 0.18Cu alloy was SSSS→GP zones/pre-ß″→ß″→ß″ + ß', 0.37Cu alloy was SSSS→GP zones/pre-ß″→ß″ + L→ß″ + L + Q'. Moreover, with the addition of Cu, the number density and volume fraction of precipitates of the Al-1.2Mg-1.2Si-(xCu) alloy was evidently increased. The number density was increased from 0.23 × 1023/m3 to 0.73 × 1023/m3 in the initial aging stage and from 1.9 × 1023/m3 to 5.5 × 1023/m3 in the peak aging stage. The volume fraction was increased from 0.27% to 0.59% in the early aging stage and from 4.05% to 5.36% in the peak aging stage. It indicated that Cu addition promoted the precipitation of strengthening precipitates and boosted the mechanical properties of the alloy accordingly.

RESUMEN

In this paper, the effects of material removal strategies and initial stress states on the machining deformation of aluminum alloy plates were investigated through a combination of finite element simulation and experiments. We developed different machining strategies described by Tm+Bn, which removal m mm materials form top and n mm materials from the bottom of the plate. The results demonstrate that the maximum deformation of structural components with the T10+B0 machining strategy could reach 1.94 mm, whereas with the T3+B7 machining strategy was only 0.065 mm, decreasing by more than 95%. The asymmetric initial stress state had a significant impact on the machining deformation of the thick plate. The machined deformation of thick plates increased with the increase in the initial stress state. The concavity of the thick plates changed with the T3+B7 machining strategy due to the asymmetry of the stress level. The deformation of frame parts was smaller when the frame opening was facing the high-stress level surface during machining than when it was facing the low-stress level. Moreover, the modeling results for the stress state and machining deformation were accurate and in good accordance with the experimental findings.

RESUMEN

Background: Melanoma is a highly malignant skin tumor with a poor prognosis. Identification of novel biomarkers might potentially reveal the underlying mechanisms of melanoma progression. Methods: We demonstrated the relationship between pan-cancer CLEC2B expression and melanoma samples in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Next, the Kaplan-Meier plot and Cox regression analysis determined the prognostic value of CLEC2B in melanoma. Biological pathway enrichment was screened by Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), enabling the correlation analysis between the immune infiltration level and CLEC2B expression in melanoma. Our final claim was validated using qPCR, immunohistochemistry, Western blot, cell colony formation assays, ethynyldeoxyuridine (Edu) analysis, and cell Invasion assays. Results: Our study revealed that the high CLEC2B expression correlates with poor overall survival of melanoma patients. Moreover, a low expression of CLEC2B was found in the A375 cell line. In addition, CLEC2B has significant prognostic value in melanoma diagnosis, with an AUC of 0.896. Prognostic analysis showed the low expression of CLEC2B to be independently associated with melanoma patients. Moreover, the expression of CLEC2B was significantly correlated with B cells, eosinophils, macrophages, neutrophils, NK cells, T helper cells, Tregs, Th1 cells, Th17 cells, and Th2 cells. PCR and immunohistochemistry indicated CLEC2B to be significantly downregulated in melanoma. The cell colony formation assay showed CLEC2B knockout increased the proliferation of A375 cells. Conclusion: Our study established low levels of CLEC2B to be poor prognostic markers, enabling immunosuppressive cell infiltration in melanoma.

RESUMEN

The valuation of wetland ecosystem services and the construction of environmental landscapes are generally recognized as contributing to the sustainable development of human wellbeing. The valuation of ecosystem services plays an important role in planning for the recovery of degraded wetlands and in urban wetland park management; however, the role of the valuation of ecosystem services is always ignored. To bring more intuitive awareness to the importance of the ecological functions of wetlands and to rationally plan wetland parks, the Lotus Lake National Wetland Park (LLNWP), an urban wetland park in Northeast China, was selected as the study area. We referred to the millennium ecosystem assessment (MA) method and calculated the valuation of this park using the market value, benefit transfer, shadow engineering, carbon tax, and travel cost. ArcGIS was used for remote sensing interpretation. The research results were as follows. LLNWP was classified under seven types of land-use. The functions of the ecosystem services included provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services, and their total value in LLNWP was 11.68×108 CNY. Regarding the per-unit area value of the ecological service functions of different land types, it was found that forest swamp > herbaceous swamp > artificial wetland > permanent river > floodplain wetland. Combined with the characteristics of the functions of its ecosystem's services, LLNWP was divided into ecological and socio-cultural functions. Then, according to the main service functions of the different land types, we propose that the space in LLNWP can be reused, and proposal planning and management suggestions can be made with the aim of preserving the basic functions.

RESUMEN

Two most common crystal structures in metals and metal alloys are body-centered cubic (bcc) and face-centered cubic (fcc) structures. The phase transitions between these structures play an important role in the production of durable and functional metal alloys. Despite their technological significance, the details of such phase transitions are largely unknown because of the challenges associated with probing these processes. Here, we describe the nanoscopic details of an fcc-to-bcc phase transition in PdCu alloy nanoparticles (NPs) using in situ heating transmission electron microscopy. Our observations reveal that the bcc phase always nucleates from the edge of the fcc NP, and then propagates across the NP by forming a distinct few-atoms-wide coherent bcc-fcc interface. Notably, this interface acts as an intermediate precursor phase for the nucleation of a bcc phase. These insights into the fcc-to-bcc phase transition are important for understanding solid - solid phase transitions in general and can help to tailor the functional properties of metals and their alloys.

RESUMEN

The light-sensitive capacity of fish larvae is determined by the structure of the retina and the opsins expressed in the retinal and nonretinal photoreceptors. In this study, the retinal structure and expression of opsin genes during the early developmental stage of Takifugu rubripes larvae were investigated. Histological examination showed that at 1 days after hatching (dah), seven layers were observed in the retina of T. rubripes larva, including the pigment epithelial layer [retinal pigment epithelium layer (RPE)], photoreceptor layer (PRos/is), outer nuclear layer (ONL), outer plexiform layer (OPL), inner nuclear layer (INL), inner plexiform layer (IPL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL). At 2 dah, optic fibre layer (OFL) can be observed, and all eight layers were visible in the retina. By measuring the thickness of each layer, opposing developmental trends were found in the thickness of ONL, OPL, INL, IPL, GCL and OFL. The nuclear density of ONL, INL and GCL and the ratios of ONL/INL, ONL/GCL and INL/GCL were also measured and the ratio of ONL/GCL ranged from 1.9 at 2 dah to 3.4 at 8 dah and no significant difference was observed between the different developmental stages (P > 0.05). No significant difference was observed for the INL/GCL ratio between the different developmental stages, which ranged from 1.2 at 2 dah to 2.0 at 18 dah (P > 0.05). The results of quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed that the expression of RH1, LWS, RH2-1, RH2-2, SWS2, rod opsin, opsin3 and opsin5 could be detected from 1 dah. These results suggest that the well-developed retina and early expression of the opsins of T. rubripes during the period of transition from endogenous to mixed feeding might be critical for vision-based survival skills during the early life stages after hatching.
