RESUMEN

Optofluidics, which utilizes the interactions between light and fluids to realize various functions, has garnered increasing attention owing to the advantages of operational simplicity, exceptional flexibility, rapid response, etc. As one of the typical light-fluid interactions, the localized photothermal effect serving as a stimulus has been widely used for fluid manipulation. Particularly, significant progress on photothermal-driven droplet manipulation has been made. In this perspective, recent advancements in localized photothermal effect driven droplet manipulation are summarized. First, the photothermal manipulation of droplets on open surfaces is outlined. An attractive droplet manipulation of light droplet levitation above the gas-liquid interface via localized photothermal effect is then discussed. Besides, the photothermal-driven manipulation of droplets in an immiscible liquid phase is also discussed. Although promising, further development of photothermal-driven droplet manipulation is still needed. The challenges and perspectives of this light droplet manipulation strategy for broad implementation are summarized, which will help future studies and applications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy (TP) presents a significant challenge due to the low bacterial load in pleural effusion (PE) samples. Cell-free Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA (cf-TB) in PE samples is considered an optimal biomarker for diagnosing TP. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of cf-TB testing across diverse research sites with a relatively large sample size. METHODS: Patients suspected of TP and presenting with clinical symptoms and radiological evidence of PE were consecutively enrolled by treating physicians from 11 research sites across 6 provinces in China between April 2020 and August 2022. Following centrifugation, sediments obtained from PE were used for Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert) and mycobacterial culture, while the supernatants were subjected to cf-TB testing. This study employed a composite reference standard to definite TP, which was characterized by any positive result for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) through either PE culture, PE Xpert, or pleural biopsy. RESULTS: A total of 1412 participants underwent screening, and 1344 (95.2%) were subsequently enrolled in this study. Data from 1241 (92.3%) participants were included, comprising 284 with definite TP, 677 with clinically diagnosed TP, and 280 without TP. The sensitivity of cf-TB testing in definite TP was 73.6% (95% CI 68.2-78.4), significantly higher than both Xpert (40.8%, 95% CI 35.3-46.7, P < 0.001) and mycobacterial culture (54.2%, 95% CI 48.4-59.9, P < 0.001). When clinically diagnosed TP was incorporated into the composite reference standard for sensitivity analysis, cf-TB testing showed a sensitivity of 46.8% (450/961, 95% CI 43.7-50.0), significantly higher than both Xpert (116/961, 12.1%, 95% CI 10.2-14.3, P < 0.001) and mycobacterial culture (154/961, 16.0%, 95% CI 13.8-18.5, P < 0.001). The specificities of cf-TB testing, Xpert, and mycobacterial culture were all 100.0%. CONCLUSIONS: The performance of cf-TB testing is significantly superior to that of Xpert and mycobacterial culture methods, indicating that it can be considered as the primary diagnostic approach for improving TP detection. Trial registration The trial was registered on Chictr.org.cn (ChiCTR2000031680, https://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.html?proj=49316 ).

RESUMEN

MoP, which possesses good conductivity and electrochemical activity, presents outstanding electrochemical performance when serving as an anode material for LIBs, yet it still suffers from rapid capacity attenuation because of its large volume change and inferior diffusion kinetics. Here, we employed a facile and scalable molten salt method to fabricate in situ sheet-like porous P-doped carbon-supported MoP nanoparticles (MoP@PC). The porous structure exhibits a high specific active surface area, which exposes more active sites and facilitates effective contact between the electrolyte and molybdenum phosphide, thereby limiting irreversible volume changes after electrochemical reactions and prolonging the battery cycle life. Compared with previous methods, this synthetic route avoids the use of toxic phosphorus sources and acids, which is green and environmentally friendly, and the reaction conditions can be adjusted, which is easy to be promoted. Thus, the MoP@PC cathode could achieve a capacity of 306 mA h g-1 at a high current density of 10 A g-1 and could run for 3500 cycles with a reduced decay rate. This work demonstrates a successful method for designing anode materials for LIBs.

RESUMEN

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major global health concern, and the development of effective treatment strategies is crucial. Enzyme prodrug therapy (EPT) shows promise in combating tumors but faces challenges in achieving sustained expression of therapeutic enzymes and optimal biological distribution. To address these issues, a fungi-triggered in situ chemotherapeutics generator (named as SC@CS@5-FC) was constructed via oral delivery of a prodrug (5-fluorocytosine, 5-FC) for the treatment of orthotopic colorectal tumor. When SC@CS@5-FC targets the tumor through tropism by Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC), the chemotherapeutic generator could be degraded under abundant hyaluronidase (HAase) in the tumor microenvironment by an enzyme-responsive gate to release prodrug (5-FC). And nontoxic 5-FC was catalyzed to toxic chemotherapy drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) by cytosine deaminase (CD) of SC. Meanwhile, SC and zinc-coordinated chitosan nanoparticles could be used as immune adjuvants to activate antigen-presenting cells and further enhance the therapeutic effect. Our results demonstrated that SC@CS@5-FC could effectively inhibit tumor growth and prolong mouse survival in an orthotopic colorectal cancer model. This work utilizes living SC as a dynamotor and positioning system for the chemotherapeutic generator SC@CS@5-FC, providing a strategy for oral enzyme prodrug therapy for the treatment of orthotopic colorectal.

RESUMEN

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is one of the most severe type of cerebral strokes, which can cause multiple cellular changes in the brain leading to neuronal injury and neurological deficits. Specifically, SAH can impair adult neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus, thus may affecting poststroke neurological and cognitive recovery. Here, we identified a non-canonical role of milk fat globule epidermal growth factor 8 (MFGE8) in rat brain after experimental SAH, involving a stimulation on adult hippocampal neurogenesis(AHN). Experimental SAH was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats via endovascular perforation, with the in vivo effect of MFGE8 evaluated via the application of recombinant human MFGE8 (rhMFGE8) along with pharmacological interventions, as determined by hemorrhagic grading, neurobehavioral test, and histological and biochemical analyses of neurogenesis related markers. Results: Levels of the endogenous hippocampal MFGE8 protein, integrin-ß3 and protein kinase B (p-Akt) were elevated in the SAH relative to control groups, while that of hippocalcin (HPCA) and cyclin D1 showed the opposite change. Intraventricular rhMGFE8 infusion reversed the decrease in doublecortin (DCX) immature neurons in the DG after SAH, along with improved the short/long term neurobehavioral scores. rhMGFE8 treatment elevated the levels of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), p-Akt, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), CyclinD1, HPCA and DCX in hippocampal lysates, but not that of integrin ß3 and Akt, at 24 hr after SAH. Treatment of integrin ß3 siRNA, the PI3K selective inhibitor ly294002 or Akt selective inhibitor MK2206 abolished the effects of rhMGFE8 after SAH. In conclusion, MFGE8 is upregulated in the hippocampus in adult rats with reduced granule cell genesis. rhMFGE8 administration can rescue this impaired adult neurogenesis and improve neurobehavioral recovery. Mechanistically, the effect of MFGE8 on hippocampal adult neurogenesis is mediated by the activation of integrin ß3/Akt pathway. These findings suggest that exogenous MFGE8 may be of potential therapeutic value in SAH management. Graphical abstract and proposed pathway of rhMFGE8 administration attenuate hippocampal injury by improving neurogenesis in SAH models. SAH caused hippocampal injury and neurogenesis interruption. Administered exogenous MFGE8, recombinant human MFGE8(rhMFGE8), could ameliorate hippocampal injury and improve neurological functions after SAH. Mechanistically, MFGE8 bind to the receptor integrin ß3, which activated the PI3K/Akt pathway to increase the mTOR expression, and further promote the expression of cyclin D1, HPCA and DCX. rhMFGE8 could attenuated hippocampal injury by improving neurogenesis after SAH, however, know down integrin ß3 or pharmacological inhibited PI3K/Akt by ly294002 or MK2206 reversed the neuro-protective effect of rhMFGE8.

RESUMEN

UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8 (UVR8) has been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana as the receptor mediating responses to UV-B radiation. However, UVR8-mediated UV-B signaling pathways in rice, which possesses two proteins (UVR8a and UVR8b) with high identities to AtUVR8, remain largely unknown. Here, UVR8a/b were found to be predominantly expressed in rice leaves and leaf sheaths, while the levels of UVR8b transcript and UVR8b protein were both higher than those of UVR8a. Compared to wild-type (WT) plants, uvr8b and uvr8a uvr8b rice mutants exposed to UV-B showed reduced UV-B-induced growth inhibition and upregulation of CHS and HY5 transcripts alongside UV-B acclimation. However, uvr8a mutant was similar to WT plants and exhibited changes comparable with WT. Overexpressing OsUVR8a/b enhanced UV-B-induced growth inhibition and acclimation to UV-B. UV-B was able to enhance the interaction between E3 ubiquitin ligase OsCOP1 and OsUVR8a/b, whereas the interaction of the homologous protein of Arabidopsis REPRESSOR OF UV-B PHOTOMORPHOGENESIS2 (AtRUP2) in rice with OsUVR8a/b was independent of UV-B. Additionally, OsUVR8a/b proteins were also found in the nucleus and cytoplasm even in the absence of UV-B. The abundance of OsUVR8 monomer showed an invisible change in the leaves of rice seedlings transferred from white light to that supplemented with UV-B, even though UV-B was able to weaken the interactions between OsUVR8a and OsUVR8b homo and heterodimers. Therefore, both OsUVR8a and OsUVR8b, which have different localization and response patterns compared with AtUVR8, function in the response of rice to UV-B radiation, whereas OsUVR8b plays a predominant role in this process.

RESUMEN

Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As), two toxic elements to humans, are ubiquitously coexisting contaminant found in paddy fields. The accumulation of Cd and As in rice, a major food source for many people around the world, can pose a serious threat to food safety and human health. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of these contaminants and take adequate measures to reduce the accumulation of these two elements in rice. Developing an effective method to simultaneously reduce the accumulation of Cd) and As in rice is challenging. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the synergistic effects of selenium (Se), iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) on the uptake, transport and accumulation of cadmium and arsenic in rice by analyzing the physical and chemical properties of the soil, the elemental concentrations and their interrelationships in the rice tissues, and the composition and morphology of the iron plaque (IP). The results showed that the combined treatments of Se, Fe and P had positive effects on reducing Cd and As accumulation in rice, reducing Cd concentrations in brown rice by 3.86-51.88 % and As concentrations by 25.37-40.81 %. The possible mechanisms for the reduction of As and Cd concentrations in rice grains were: (i) Combined application of Fe, P and Se can effectively reduce the soil available Cd and As concentration. (ii) Combined application significantly improved the formation of IP at the tillering stage and increased the crystalline iron oxides in IP, promoting the deposition of SiO2 in rice roots, thereby effectively inhibiting the uptake of Cd and As by rice roots. (iii) Interplay and interaction between elements facilitated by transporter proteins could contribute to the synergistic mitigation of Cd and As by Se, Fe and P. This study provides a valuable new approach for effective control of Cd and As concentration of rice grown in co-contaminated soil.

RESUMEN

The application of solar-thermal surfaces for antifrosting and defrosting has emerged as a passive and environmentally friendly approach to mitigate the negative consequences of frost formation, such as structural damage and reduced heat transfer efficiency. However, achieving robust all-day frostphobicity solely through interfacial modification and solar-thermal effects is challenging in practical applications: The thick frost that accumulates at night strongly scatters solar radiation, rendering the solar-thermal coatings ineffective during the daytime. Additionally, these nanostructured coatings are susceptible to wear and tear when exposed to the outdoors for extended periods of time. To address these challenges, we present an innovative frostphobic surface that incorporates V-grooved structures with superhydrophobic solar-thermal layers (VSSs). The out-of-plane gradient structures facilitate spatially regulated vapor diffusion, an enhanced photothermal effect, and robust water repellency. These features not only prevent frost from covering the entire surface overnight, enabling effective solar-thermal defrosting during the daytime, but also protect the surface from deterioration. The combined merits ensure robust all-day frostphobicity and exceptional durability, making the VSS surface promising for practical applications and extending the lifespan in extreme environments.

RESUMEN

Superconductivity involving finite-momentum pairing1 can lead to spatial-gap and pair-density modulations, as well as Bogoliubov Fermi states within the superconducting gap. However, the experimental realization of their intertwined relations has been challenging. Here we detect chiral kagome superconductivity modulations with residual Fermi arcs in KV3Sb5 and CsV3Sb5 using normal and Josephson scanning tunnelling microscopy down to 30 millikelvin with a resolved electronic energy difference at the microelectronvolt level. We observe a U-shaped superconducting gap with flat residual in-gap states. This gap shows chiral 2a × 2a spatial modulations with magnetic-field-tunable chirality, which align with the chiral 2a × 2a pair-density modulations observed through Josephson tunnelling. These findings demonstrate a chiral pair density wave (PDW) that breaks time-reversal symmetry. Quasiparticle interference imaging of the in-gap zero-energy states reveals segmented arcs, with high-temperature data linking them to parts of the reconstructed vanadium d-orbital states within the charge order. The detected residual Fermi arcs can be explained by the partial suppression of these d-orbital states through an interorbital 2a × 2a PDW and thus serve as candidate Bogoliubov Fermi states. In addition, we differentiate the observed PDW order from impurity-induced gap modulations. Our observations not only uncover a chiral PDW order with orbital selectivity but also show the fundamental space-momentum correspondence inherent in finite-momentum-paired superconductivity.

RESUMEN

In recent years, ground-level-ozone(O3) pollution in urban areas in the Bohai Rim has attracted wide attention. Based on the analysis of the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of O3 concentration in Dongying, a representative city in the Bohai Rim from 2017 to 2022, the effects of meteorological factors and sea-land breeze circulation on O3 concentration were evaluated. The results showed that: ① From 2017 to 2022, the annual assessment value of O3 concentration in Dongying showed a fluctuating upward trend, and the pollution days with O3 as the primary pollutant increased. O3 pollution mainly occurred in spring, summer, and autumn, with the most severe O3 pollution episodes typically occurring in May and June, and the duration of O3 pollution season tended to be longer. The monthly variation in the daily maximum 8-h average ozone (MDA8 O3) presented a bimodal distribution, with significant increases in the 5th and 25th percentiles, and the spatial distribution was "high in the north and south, low in the middle." In addition, the nocturnal O3 concentration in recent years in Dongying also showed a significant increase trend. ② Meteorological factors greatly influenced O3 concentration in Dongying. When the temperature was greater than 30℃, the relative humidity was less than 50%, and the wind direction was south-southwest or east-northeast, a high O3 value was more likely to occur. Meteorological factors contributed 30% of the MDA8 O3 variation in Dongying during the study period. In the case of moderate and severe O3 pollution, the contribution of meteorological factors to the change in MDA8 O3 could be as high as 40%. ③ To some extent, sea-land breeze contributed to the occurrence of MDA8 O3 exceeding the secondary standard limit value of the National Ambient Air Quality Standard. In the afternoon, the hourly concentration of O3 during the sea-land breeze days was approximately 20 µg·m-3 higher than that during the non-sea-land breeze days. On the days of moderate and severe O3 pollution, the O3 concentration during the sea-land breeze days from 10:00 to 16:00 was higher than that during non-sea-land breeze days, and the O3 concentration was also at a high level from 20:00 to 23:00 on sea-land breeze days. In the O3 pollution season, the sea-land breeze could significantly affect the O3 level in coastal cities, which could bring significant challenges for O3 pollution prevention and control in this region. In the future, cities in the Bohai Rim need to further strengthen regional joint prevention and control of O3 pollution and increase emission reduction efforts of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. This strategy could effectively lower pollutant concentrations within the land breeze air mass, consequently reducing the impact of the sea breeze air mass on air quality in cities in the Bohai Rim.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The combination of magnetic compression anastomosis (MCA) and endoscopy has been used to treat biliary stricture after liver transplantation. However, its use for the treatment of complex biliary obstruction after major abdominal trauma has not been reported. This case report describes the successful use of MCA for the treatment of biliary obstruction resulting from major abdominal trauma. CASE SUMMARY: A 23-year-old man underwent major abdominal surgery (repair of liver rupture, right half colon resection, and ileostomy) following a car accident one year ago. The abdominal drainage tube, positioned at the Winslow foramen, was draining approximately 600-800 mL of bile per day. During the two endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedures, the guide wire was unable to enter the common bile duct, which prevented placement of a biliary stent. MCA combined with endoscopy was used to successfully achieve magnetic anastomosis of the peritoneal sinus tract and duodenum, and then a choledochoduodenal stent was placed. Finally, the external biliary drainage tube was removed. The patient achieved internal biliary drainage leading to the removal of the external biliary drainage tube, which improved the quality of life. CONCLUSION: Magnetic compression technique can be used for the treatment of complex biliary obstruction with minimal operative trauma.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The treatment of postoperative anastomotic stenosis after excision of rectal cancer is challenging. Endoscopic balloon dilation and radial incision are not effective in all patients. We present a new endoscopy-assisted magnetic compression technique (MCT) for the treatment of rectal anastomotic stenosis. We successfully applied this MCT to a patient who developed an anastomotic stricture after radical resection of rectal cancer. CASE SUMMARY: A 50-year-old man had undergone laparoscopic radical rectal cancer surgery at a local hospital 5 months ago. A colonoscopy performed 2 months ago indicated that the rectal anastomosis was narrow due to which ileostomy closure could not be performed. The patient came to the Magnetic Surgery Clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University after learning that we had successfully treated patients with colorectal stenosis using MCT. We performed endoscopy-assisted magnetic compression surgery for rectal stenosis. The magnets were removed 16 d later. A follow-up colonoscopy performed after 4 months showed good anastomotic patency, following which, ileostomy closure surgery was performed. CONCLUSION: MCT is a simple, non-invasive technique for the treatment of anastomotic stricture after radical resection of rectal cancer. The technique can be widely used in clinical settings.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Aging is one of the risk factors for the early onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We previously discovered that the age-dependent increase in Ubiquitin Conjugating Enzyme E2 N (UBE2N) plays a role in the accumulation of misfolded proteins through K63 ubiquitination, which has been linked to AD pathogenesis. However, the impact of UBE2N on amyloid pathology and clearance has remained unknown. RESULTS: We observed the elevated UBE2N during the amyloid beta (Aß) generation in the brains of 5×FAD, APP/PS1 mice, and patients with AD, in comparison to healthy individuals. UBE2N overexpression exacerbated amyloid deposition in 5×FAD mice and senescent monkeys, whereas knocking down UBE2N via CRISPR/Cas9 reduced Aß generation and cognitive deficiency. Moreover, pharmacological inhibition of UBE2N ameliorated Aß pathology and subsequent transcript defects in 5×FAD mice. DISCUSSION: We have discovered that age-dependent expression of UBE2N is a critical regulator of AD pathology. Our findings suggest that UBE2N could serve as a potential pharmacological target for the advancement of AD therapeutics. HIGHLIGHTS: Ubiquitin Conjugating Enzyme E2 N (UBE2N) level was elevated during amyloid beta (Aß) deposition in AD mouse and patients' brains. UBE2N exacerbated Aß generation in the AD mouse and senescent monkey. Drug inhibition of UBE2N ameliorated Aß pathology and cognitive deficiency.

RESUMEN

Abbreviata baltazardi Chabaud, 1953 (Nematoda: Physalopteridae) is a hitherto poorly known parasitic nematode species reported from Phrynocephalus helioscopus Pallas (Squamata: Agamidae) in Iran. The current knowledge on the morphology of A. baltazardi is still very limited. In the present study, the detailed morphology of A. baltazardi was studied using light microscopy and, for the first time, scanning electron microscopy, based on newly collected specimens from the yarkand toad-headed agama P. axillaris Blanford Pallas (Squamata: Agamidae) in China. Some erroneous or previously unreported morphological features of A. baltazardi were observed using SEM, which include the presence of one large semicircular protrusion and 20-30 denticles on each pseudolabium, the absence of precloacal medioventral papilla in some individuals and the presence of 4-5 postcloacal medioventral papillae in males. SEM observations also clearly showed the detailed morphology of deirids, cloacal ornamentation, caudal papillae, vulva and egg. Abbreviata baltazardi represents the first species of Abbreviata Travassos, 1920 reported in China.

RESUMEN

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of amyloid-ß (Aß) has emerged as a crucial strategy for early diagnosis and monitoring of therapeutic advancements targeting Aß. In our previous first-in-human study, we identified that [18F]Florbetazine ([18F]92), featuring a diaryl-azine scaffold, exhibits higher cortical uptake in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients compared to healthy controls (HC). Building upon these promising findings, this study aimed to characterize the diagnostic potential of [18F]92 and its dimethylamino-modified tracer [18F]91 and further compare them with the benchmark [11C]PiB in the same cohort of AD patients and age-matched HC subjects. The cortical accumulation of these tracers was evident, with no significant radioactivity retention observed in the cortex of HC subjects, consistent with [11C]PiB images (correlation coefficient of 0.9125 and 0.7883 between [18F]Florbetazine/[18F]91 and [11C]PiB, respectively). Additionally, quantified data revealed higher standardized uptake value ratios (SUVR) (with the cerebellum as the reference region) of [18F]Florbetazine/[18F]91 in AD patients compared to the HC group ([18F]Florbetazine: 1.49 vs 1.16; [18F]91: 1.33 vs 1.20). Notably, [18F]Florbetazine exhibited less nonspecific bindings in myelin-rich regions, compared to the dimethylamino-substituted [18F]91, akin to [11C]PiB. Overall, this study suggests that [18F]Florbetazine displays superior characteristics to [18F]91 in identifying Aß pathology in AD. Furthermore, the close agreement between the uptakes in nontarget regions for [18F]Florbetazine and [11C]PiB in this head-to-head comparison study underscores its suitability for both clinical and research applications.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) seriously affects the daily life of people. The whole plant of Artemisia ordosica Krasch. (AOK) has been used in folk medicine. This study aimed to investigate the in vivo anti-RA effects of AOK extract (AOKE) on collagen-induced arthritis in rats. METHODS: AOKE (400, 200, or 100 mg/kg) was administered orally to animals for 30 days. Body weight, paw swelling, arthritis index, thymus, and spleen indices, and pathological changes were assessed for effects of AOKE on RA. Furthermore, the inflammatory cytokines in rat serum were detected. In addition, the expressions of STAT3, Caspase-3, Galectin-3, and S100A9 in synovial tissue were researched using immunohistochemistry. KEY FINDINGS: The AOKE significantly reduced the arthritis indices, paw swelling, spleen, and thymus indices. Meanwhile, AOKE (400 mg/kg) decreased the levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-17A, and increased the level of IL-10 in rat serum. Histopathological examination showed that AOKE reduced inflammatory cell infiltration and cartilage erosion. Then, AOKE decreased the expressions of STAT3, Galectin-3, S100A9, and increased the expression of Caspase-3. CONCLUSION: AOKE had interesting anti-RA activity in rats, which deserved further research for the development and clinical use of this medicinal resource.

RESUMEN

Microplastic (MP) pollution has become a pressing concern in global freshwater ecosystems because rivers serve as essential channels for the transport of terrestrial debris to the ocean. The current researches mostly focus on the large catchments, but the impact on the small catchments remains underexplored. In this study, we employed Strahler's stream order classification to delineate the catchment structure of the Beijiang River in South China. The distribution pattern of MP contamination and the factors influencing the distribution pattern, were assessed across the streams at different orders. We found that the Beijiang River was moderately polluted compare to other rivers in China, with an average MP abundance of 2.15 ± 1.65 items/L. MP abundance ranged from 3.17 to 1.45 items/L in the streams at different orders, and significantly decreased with increasing stream order (R2 = 0.93). This highlights the key role of small rivers as the channels for the transport of MPs from watersheds to main streams. The high abundance of PP and PE fibers, the high correlation between the stream order and the resin proportion (R2 = 0.89), and the significant correlation between MP abundance and proximity to urban centers (P = 0.02), indicated that MP pollution across the streams at different orders was predominantly influenced by anthropogenic activities, rather than natural environmental factors. By integrating MP data with hydrographic information, the annual MP loads for the streams at Orders 1 to Order 5 were estimated to be 4.63, 39.38, 204.63, 503.06, and 1137.88 tons/yr, respectively. Additionally, an ecological risk assessment indicates that MP pollution led to a low risk in the Beijiang River. Our findings deepen the understanding of MP pollution within freshwater river networks, and emphasize the crucial role of tributary systems in transporting MPs to main river channels.

RESUMEN

The rising of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI), constituting 5 % of NOx emissions in Beijing, poses a significant challenge to improving air quality. This study establishes a comprehensive historical inventory of air pollutants (APs) emitted from MSWI plants between 2004 and 2023. The inventory was developed using both the continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS)-based method and the EF (emission factors) -based method, incorporating detailed plant-level activity data and localized EF derived from field measurements. These include data from CEMS and manual monitoring. Analysis of CEMS data reveals high compliance rates with emission limits for MSW in Beijing, with 99.9 %, 99.5 %, 99.8 %, 98.7 %, and 99.5 % of units meeting standards for PM, SO2, NOx, CO and HCl, respectively. This suggests effective implementation of emission standards in Beijing, although further strengthening of policies, particularly for CO emissions, is warranted. Overall, total AP emissions have increased annually largely attributed to measures implemented for DeSOx, DeNOx, and DePM since 1998. Most MSWI facilities are located in suburban areas rather than urban cores. Emissions of SO2, HCl, CO, Hg, Cd + Ti, other metals, dioxins, VOCs, and NH3 exhibit a spatially homogeneous distribution at the district level, while PM and NOx emissions demonstrate heterogeneity. Scenario analysis underscores the importance of continuous improvement and upgrading of advanced air pollution control devices. This study contributes a methodological framework for estimating emissions, reducing uncertainties, and informing policy-making to mitigate APs emissions in megacities. It serves as a valuable reference for similar cities grappling with air quality challenges.

RESUMEN

Neonicotinoid pollution has increased rapidly and globally in recent years, posing significant risks to agricultural areas. Quantifying use and emission, transport and fate of these contaminants, and risks is critical for proper management of neonicotinoids in river basin. This study elucidates use and emissions of neonicotinoid pesticides in a typical large-scale agriculture basin of China, the Pearl River Basin, as well as the resulting agricultural non-point source pollution and related ecological risks using market surveys, data analysis, and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool. Neonicotinoid use in the basin was estimated at 1361 t in 2019, of which 83.1 % was used in agriculture. After application, approximately 99.1 t neonicotinoids were transported to the Pearl River, accounting for 7.2 % of the total applied. Estimated aquatic concentrations of neonicotinoids showed three seasonal peaks. Several distinct groups of neonicotinoid chemicals can be observed in the Pearl River, as estimated by the model. An estimated 3.9 % of the neonicotinoids used were transported to the South China Sea. Based on the present risk assessment result, several neonicotinoids posed risks to aquatic organism. Therefore, the use of alternative products and/or reduced use is deemed necessary. This study provides novel insights into the fate and ecological risks of neonicotinoid insecticides in large-scale watersheds, and underscores the need for greater efficiency of use and extensive environmental monitoring.

RESUMEN

A photoinduced nickel-catalyzed reductive carbonylative coupling from organohalides and N-(acyloxy)phthalimide esters with phenyl formate as the carbonyl source has been developed. This reaction could perform smoothly under mild conditions, and a series of aryl-alkyl and alkyl-alkyl unsymmetrical ketones were produced without the need of stoichiometric metal reductants. Mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction was initiated from radical capture by Ni(I)-carbonyl species and subsequent rapid carbonyl insertion.
