OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between microvascular disease (MVD) and risk of stroke, dementia, and their major subtypes among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: We included 26,173 participants with T2DM from the UK Biobank who had no known stroke or dementia at baseline. MVD burden was reflected by the presence of retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy, and chronic kidney disease. Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidential intervals (CIs) of stroke and dementia associated with overall MVD burden and individual MVD. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 11.5 years, 1103 incident stroke (964 ischemic and 269 hemorrhagic stroke) and 813 incident dementia (312 Alzheimer's disease and 304 vascular dementia) cases were identified. The risk of stroke, dementia, and their major subtypes all increased with an increasing number of MVD (all P-trend <0.001). The adjusted HRs (95 % CIs) comparing three with no MVD were 5.03 (3.16, 8.02) for all stroke, 4.57 (2.75, 7.59) for ischemic stroke, and 6.60 (2.65, 16.43) for hemorrhagic stroke. The corresponding estimates were 4.28 (2.33, 7.86) for all-cause dementia, 6.96 (3.02, 16.01) for Alzheimer's disease, and 3.81 (1.40, 10.42) for vascular dementia. Among the three MVD, chronic kidney disease showed the strongest associations with both stroke subtypes, while peripheral neuropathy was most strongly associated with both dementia subtypes. CONCLUSIONS: Risk of stroke, dementia, and their major subtypes increased with an increasing number of MVD. The associations of individual MVD with stroke and dementia varied substantially by types of MVD.

Lewis acids of solid catalysts have been featured for a pivotal role in promoting various reactions. Regarding the oxidation protocol to remove formaldehyde, the inherent drawback of the best-studied MnO2 materials in acidic sites has eventually caused deficiency of active hydroxyls to sustain low-temperature activity. Herein, the cryptomelane-type MnO2 was targeted and it was tuned via incorporation of Zr metal, exhibiting great advances in not only the complete HCHO-to-CO2 degradation but also cycling performance. Zr species were existent in doping state in the MnO2 lattice, rendering lower crystallinity and breaking the regular growth of MnO2 crystallites, which thereby tripled surface area and created larger volume of smaller mesopores. Meantime, the local electronic properties of Mn atoms were also changed by Zr doping, i.e., more low-valence Mn species were formed due to the electron transfer from Zr to Mn. The results of infrared studies demonstrate the higher possession of Lewis acid sites on ZrMn, and this high degree of electrophilic agents favored the production of hydroxyl species. Furthermore, the reactivity of surface hydroxyls, as investigated by CO temperature programmed reduction and temperature programmed desorption of adsorbed O2, was obviously improved as well after Zr modification. It is speculated jointly with the characterizations of the post-reaction catalysts that the accelerated production of active hydroxyls helped rapidly convert formaldehyde into key intermediate-formate, which was then degraded into CO2, avoiding the side reaction path with undesired intermediate-hydrocarbonate-over the pristine MnO2, where active sites were blocked and formaldehyde oxidation was inhibited. Additionally, Zr decoration could stabilize Lewis acidity to be more resistant to heat degeneration, and this merit brought about advantageous thermal recyclability for cycled application.

Ribosome biogenesis is a highly dynamic and orchestrated process facilitated by hundreds of ribosomal biogenesis factors and small nucleolar RNAs. While many of the advances are derived from studies in yeast, ribosome biogenesis remains largely unknown in plants despite its importance to plant growth and development. Through characterizing the maize (Zea mays) defective kernel and embryo-lethal mutant dek58, we show that DEK58 encodes an Rrp15p domain-containing protein with 15.3% identity to yeast Rrp15. Over-expression of DEK58 rescues the mutant phenotype. DEK58 is localized in the nucleolus. Ribosome profiling and RNA gel blot analyses show that the absence of DEK58 reduces ribosome assembly and impedes pre-rRNA processing, accompanied by the accumulation of nearly all the pre-rRNA processing intermediates and the production of an aberrant processing product P-25S*. DEK58 interacts with ZmSSF1, a maize homolog of the yeast Ssf1 in the 60S processome. DEK58 and ZmSSF1 interact with ZmCK2α, a putative component of the yeast UTP-C complex involved in the small ribosomal subunit processome. These results demonstrate that DEK58 is essential to seed development in maize. It functions in the early stage of pre-rRNA processing in ribosome biogenesis, possibly through interacting with ZmSSF1 and ZmCK2α in maize.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was associated with elevated risk of cardiometabolic diseases in observational studies. We aimed to evaluate the observational and genetic associations of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) with multiple cardiometabolic outcomes. METHODS: Our phenotypic and genetic association analyses included more than 400 000 participants who were free of major cardiovascular disease and diabetes at recruitment (2006-2010) and were followed up until December 2019 based on the UK Biobank. For the Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses, 415 and 273 single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with CD and UC, respectively, were selected as genetic instruments. Summary-level data on individual cardiometabolic outcomes were obtained from 4 different genome-wide association studies with a total of 2 248 842 participants. RESULTS: In the multivariable-adjusted observational analyses, CD was associated with higher risks of heart failure (hazard ratio [HR], 1.72; 95% confidence interval, 1.22-2.42) and type 2 diabetes (HR, 2.11; 95% confidence interval, 1.67-2.67) but not with myocardial infarction or ischemic stroke. UC was related to increased risks of all the assessed cardiometabolic diseases (HRs ranged from 1.29 for myocardial infarction to 1.76 for type 2 diabetes). Conversely, neither the genetic risk score for CD nor that for UC was associated with higher risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases. In 2-sample MR analyses, genetically determined CD and UC were not associated with any of the assessed cardiometabolic diseases (all P values >.05). CONCLUSIONS: Despite confirming the observational associations, our study does not support a causal association between IBD and elevated risk of cardiometabolic diseases.

The lack of M-Fe-S (M = Mo or W) clusters incorporating a second period (2p) atom in the core has resulted in limited investigations and poor understanding of the physical and chemical properties of the M-Fe-S clusters closely related to the FeMo cofactor. In this work, systematic studies have been carried out to explore the chemical reactivities at the terminal ligand sites and the redox properties of a series of clusters comprising a [WFe3S3N] cubane core, based on the previously developed cluster [(Tp*)WFe3S3(µ3-NSiMe3)Cl3]1-. Substitutions of the terminal chlorides with ethanethiolate, methanethiolate, thiophenolate, p-thiocresolate and azide occurred smoothly, while the replacement of the chlorides with carbene ligands required the reduction of the precursor into [(Tp*)WFe3S3(µ3-NSiMe3)Cl3]2- first. The reduced cluster core could also be supported by thiophenolates as terminal ligands, but not thiolates or azides. It is remarkable that the thiophenolate ligated reduced cluster can be synthesized from the precursor [(Tp*)WFe3S3(µ3-NSiMe3)Cl3]1-via different synthetic routes, either reduction followed by substitution or substitution followed by reduction, either in situ or stepwise. This work indicates that terminal ligands contribute significantly to determine the chemical and physical properties of the clusters, even though they might affect the cluster core to a limited extent from a structural point of view, which raises the possibility of delicate control in regulating the physical/chemical properties of M-Fe-S clusters with a heteroleptic core incorporating 2p atom(s).

Particulate matter (PM) is the main contributor to air pollution, and filtration has been reported to be promising for PM capturing. Considering the complexity of polluted air (volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ozone are likely concomitant with PM particles) and in view of the versatility of MnO2 for the degradation of VOCs and ozone, the feasibility of MnO2 materials as PM filtering media was investigated in this study, and the effect of crystal structure on PM filtration was clarified. Compared with the layered δ-MnO2, the MnO2 with tunnel structure (including 1 × 2-, 2 × 2- and 3 × 3-MnO2) exhibited greatly enhanced PM removal efficiencies, and particularly, the 3 × 3-MnO2 possessed not only significant activity for adsorbing PM particles but also high utilization efficiency of the active surface. Physicochemical properties of the adsorbents were studied by XRD, ATR, isothermal N2 adsorption, SEM and (HR)TEM. The correlation between pore characteristics and particle elimination activity demonstrates that the most developed mesoporous structure of the 3 × 3-MnO2 sample played an important role in strengthening the PM adsorption capability. Further comparison of the surface properties of the fresh and spent samples reveals that with respective to the occasion of δ-MnO2, the structure of 3 × 3-MnO2 was robust enough to resist collapse after PM capturing and the great accommodation of the inorganic and organic PM substances in the voluminous pores induced strong affinity between PM particles and 3 × 3-MnO2. Thereby, a higher particle filtration ability was retained.

To obtain a versatile formaldehyde oxidation material, simultaneously increasing the oxidative ability, recyclability and deactivation repellence (e.g., enduring the interference from moisture and aromatic compound omnipresent in indoor air) is of great significance. Herein, the above properties of α-MnO2 were synchronously updated via one step treatment in oxalic acid (H2C2O4), and an in-depth understanding of the surface properties-performance relationship was provided by systematic characterizations and designed experiments. Compared with the pristine sample, XPS, ESR, O2-TPD, CO-TPR and pyridine-IR reveal that H2C2O4 created substantial Mn3+ species on surface, exposing a higher coverage of oxygen vacancies that actively participated in the dissociative activation of gas-phase O2 into reactive chemically adsorbed oxygen (OC), and the abundant Lewis acid sites further enabled the effective O2 activation process. The large amount of oxygen OC promoted the HCHO-to-CO2 conversion and inhibited the accumulation of formate that required a high temperature of 170 °C to be eliminated, thus conspicuously improving the α-MnO2's thermal recovery. The combined H2O-TPD, H2O-preadsorbed CO-TPR, C6H6-TPD and C6H6-preadsorbed CO-TPR investigations shed light on the H2C2O4-induced water and benzene resistance. The notably weakened water and benzene binding strength with the H2C2O4-modified surface together with the unrestrained oxygen OC accounted for the outstanding anti-deactivation performance.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have suggested that age at first birth (AFB) is inversely associated with metabolic diseases, but positively associated with liver cancer in women. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a canonical example of metabolic dysfunction and inflammation-based liver disease, while the association between AFB and the risk of NAFLD remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between AFB and the odds of NAFLD in women. METHODS: Women older than 20 years at the time of the survey were analyzed using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999 to 2018 in the US. AFB was obtained with self-administered questionnaires. NAFLD was diagnosed as fatty liver index (FLI) ≥ 60. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using logistic regression models. RESULTS: Of the 12,188 women included in this study, 5670 (46.5%) had NAFLD. Compared to individuals with AFB of 30-32 years old (reference group), the fully adjusted ORs and 95% CI in women with AFB < 18, 18-20, 21-23, and 24-26 years were 1.52 (95% CI 1.14, 2.03), 1.60 (95% CI 1.21, 2.11), 1.40 (95% CI 1.06, 1.84), and 1.33 (95% CI 1.01-1.76), respectively. Yet there was no significant difference between AFB of 27-29, 33-35, or > 35 years compared to the reference group. CONCLUSIONS: Women with younger AFB have higher odds of NAFLD in later life. Policymakers should consider focusing on those with earlier AFB for screening and prevention of NAFLD.

CONTEXT: The influences of diabetes duration and glycemic control and their potential interplays on the risk of heart failure (HF) remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to investigate the association of diabetes duration and glycemic control with the risk of HF. METHODS: A total of 23 754 individuals with diabetes but without HF during the baseline recruitment of UK Biobank were included in this study. Duration of diabetes was self-reported, and the status of glycemic control was reflected by glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Their associations with incident HF were assessed using multivariate Cox models adjusting for traditional risk factors. RESULTS: Duration of diabetes and HbA1c levels both were positively associated with the risk of HF. The hazard ratios (HRs) (95% CI) for diabetes durations of 5 to less than 10, 10 to less than 15, and 15 years or more were 1.09 (0.97-1.23), 1.13 (0.97-1.30), and 1.32 (1.15-1.53), respectively (vs < 5 years); and the HRs for HbA1c of 53.0 to less than 58.5 mmol/mol (7.0% to < 7.5%), 58.5 to less than 63.9 mmol/mol (7.5% to < 8.0%), and 63.9 mmol/mol or greater (8.0%) were 1.15 (1.02-1.31), 1.07 (0.91-1.26), and 1.46 (1.30-1.65), respectively (vs < 53.0 mmol/mol [7.0%]). Individuals with the longest disease duration (≥ 15 years) and poorer glycemic control (HbA1c ≥ 63.9 mmol/mol [8.0%]) had a particularly higher risk of HF (P for interaction = .026). CONCLUSION: The risk of HF among individuals with diabetes increases with a longer duration of diabetes and increasing HbA1c levels. This finding may contribute to the individualized prevention of HF in patients with diabetes if being considered in clinical practices and policy-making.

The erroneous differentiation of tendon-derived stem cells (TDSCs) into adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts is believed to play an important role in the development of tendinopathy. However, the regulatory mechanisms of TDSC differentiation remain unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the contribution and mechanism of the tendon microstructural disruption to the differentiation of TDSCs. Bovine Achilles tendons were sliced. The tendon slices were stretched with different tensile strains to mimic the tendon structure alteration at various scales. The TDSCs were cultured on the tendon slices. The differentiation of TDSCs and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the TDSCs were investigated with quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, immunostaining and western blot. The effect of ER stress inhibition on chondrogenic differentiation of the TDSCs was further investigated. The structural alteration did not affect the viability of TDSCs. However, the structural alteration of tendon slices with 6.4% strain promoted TDSCs to express the chondrogenic genes. ER stress-related markers, ATF-4 and PERK, were also upregulated. With the inhibition of ER stress, the expression of ATF-4 and the chondrogenic gene SOX9 of TDSCs were inhibited. The study indicated that tendon microdamage could induce the chondrogenic differentiation of TDSCs through triggering ER stress to activate ATF-4 and SOX9 subsequently.

Multiple functionalities on a shared aperture are crucial for metasurfaces (MSs) in many applications. In this paper, we propose a coding-feeding metasurface (CFMS) with the multiple functions of high-gain radiation, orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation, and radar cross-section (RCS) reduction based on phase manipulation. The unit cell of the CFMS is composed of a rectangular emission patch and two quasi-Minkowski patches for reflective phase manipulation, which are on a shared aperture. The high-gain radiation and multiple modes of ±1, ±2, and ±3 OAM generation were realized by rationally setting the elements and the phase of their excitation. The CFMS presents a broadband RCS reduction of 8 dB from 3.18 GHz to 7.56 GHz for y-polarization and dual-band RCS reduction for x-polarization based on phase interference. To validate the concept of the CFMS, a prototype was fabricated and measured. The results of the measurement agree well with the simulation. A CFMS with the advantages of light weight and low profile has potential application in detection and wireless communication systems for stealth aircraft.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between microvascular disease (MVD) and risk of heart failure (HF) among individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We included 1,713 and 28,624 participants with T1DM and T2DM, respectively, from the UK Biobank who were free of HF during enrollment. MVD burden reflected by the presence of retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) at baseline was prospectively evaluated for the association with incidence of HF. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs of HF were estimated by Cox regression models adjusted for multiple traditional risk factors. RESULTS: There were 145 and 2,515 incident cases of HF recorded among participants with T1DM and T2DM, respectively, during a median follow-up of 11.5 years. The association between the number of MVD and HF was stronger among participants with T1DM than among those with T2DM (P for interaction <0.001). Compared with participants with no MVD, those with all three MVD had an adjusted HR (95% CI) of 11.37 (5.62, 22.99) in T1DM and 3.66 (2.74, 4.88) in T2DM. In T1DM, HRs (CIs) were 2.69 (1.75, 4.14) for retinopathy, 2.11 (1.38, 3.23) for peripheral neuropathy, and 2.21 (1.53, 3.18) for CKD. The corresponding estimates in T2DM were 1.24 (1.13, 1.36), 1.63 (1.36, 1.96), and 1.73 (1.59, 1.89), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: While a heavier burden of MVD was associated with excess risk of HF both in T1DM and T2DM, the association was evidently more pronounced in T1DM.

BACKGROUND: Whether lifestyle factors are similarly associated with risk of heart failure (HF) for individuals with different metabolic or genetic risk status remains unclear. METHODS: We included 464 483 participants from UK Biobank who were free of major cardiovascular disease or HF during baseline recruitment. Healthy lifestyle factors included avoidance of smoking, no obesity, regular physical activity, and healthy diet. Lifestyle was categorized as favorable (3 or 4 healthy lifestyle factors), intermediate (2 healthy lifestyle factors), and unfavorable (0 or 1 healthy lifestyle factor) lifestyles. Metabolic status was defined by the presence of hypertension, high total cholesterol, or diabetes at baseline. A weighted genetic risk score was created based on 12 single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with HF. RESULTS: Compared with favorable lifestyle, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios of HF were 1.79 (95% CI, 1.68-1.90) and 2.90 (95% CI, 2.70-3.11) for intermediate lifestyle and unfavorable lifestyle, respectively (Ptrend <0.0001). This association was largely consistent regardless of the presence of any single metabolic risk factor or the number of metabolic risk factors (Pinteraction ≥0.21). The association was also similar across different genetic risk categories (Pinteraction=0.92). In a joint analysis, the hazard ratio of HF was 4.05 (95% CI, 3.43-4.77) comparing participants who had both higher genetic risk and an unfavorable lifestyle with those having lower genetic risk and a favorable lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS: Combined lifestyle was associated with incident HF regardless of metabolic or genetic risk status, supporting the recommendation of healthy lifestyles for HF prevention across the entire population.

Single or cooperative incorporation of Ce and Sn elements into α-MnO2 parent were tried to update the catalytic benzene oxidation performance, and the successive modification via Ce doping and Sn deposition was demonstrated to be a promising methodology to offer high mineralization and avoid moisture-aroused inactivation. Ce doping caused lattice distortion, increased Mn3+ content to 2.7 times that of the pristine MnO2 and weakened Mn-O bonds due to electron transfer from Ce3+ to lattice oxygen, thus facilizing oxygen vacancy formation. Further, Sn deposition on CeMn substrate induced strong metal support interaction (SMSI) due to the core-shell like structure of Sn@CeMn, which promoted the construction of active oxygen vacancies to an even larger extent (1.2 and 2.5 times that of the CeMn and pristine MnO2, respectively). The thus-formed larger amount of reactive oxygen species rendered the Sn@CeMn simultaneously with high CO2 yield and low CO production. Also benefited from the SMSI effect, the Sn@CeMn's ability to continuously activate O2 and H2O into reactive oxygen species (e.g.,·OH radicals) was enhanced, which could offset the negativity caused by water vapor, thereby keeping > 95% removal during 5.5 h water switch on/off investigation at 200 °C. Reaction pathways were uncovered with designed experimentations.

Under the background of indoor air formaldehyde decontamination, a freestanding ultra-light assembly was fabricated via ice-templating approach starting from MnO2 nanoparticles and environmentally benign agar powder. The 3D composite of agar and MnO2 (AM-3D) was comparatively studied with powdered counterparts (including pure MnO2 and mixture of agar and MnO2) and the 3D-structured agar for formaldehyde oxidation, and their physicochemical properties were examined with XRD, ATR, SEM, XPS, isothermal N2 adsorption, ESR, Raman, CO-TPR and O2-TPD. For the single test of formaldehyde oxidation, the AM-3D catalyst exhibited 62.0%-67.0% removal percentage for ~400 mg/m3 formaldehyde, which did not demonstrate significant advantage over the control samples. However, thanks to the porous 3D agar scaffold with large spatial volume that could promote a rapid gas-phase formaldehyde concentration reduction, and the strong interaction between the dispersed MnO2 particles and agar substrate that could afford a large amount of reactive oxygen species to further oxidize the adsorbed formaldehyde, the AM-3D composite was a much better HCHO-to-CO2 converter and possessed much more advantageous stability for repeated cycles of formaldehyde oxidation: even after ten cycles, there was still 41.7% of formaldehyde removed. Furthermore, the viable sunlight irradiation could easily restore the activity of the used AM-3D catalyst back to the level approaching that of the fresh one. Finally, reaction pathways were put forward via the infrared spectroscopic and ion chromatographic investigations on the surface intermediates of the spent materials.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) imaging can help to predict the pathological invasiveness of early-stage lung adenocarcinoma and guide surgical resection. This retrospective study investigated whether CT imaging could distinguish pre-invasive lung adenocarcinoma from IAC. It also compared final pathology prediction accuracy between CT imaging and intraoperative frozen section analysis. METHODS: This study included 2093 patients with early-stage peripheral lung adenocarcinoma who underwent CT imaging and intraoperative frozen section analysis between March 2013 and November 2014. Nodules were classified as ground-glass (GGNs), part-solid (PSNs), and solid nodules according to CT findings; they were classified as pre-IAC and IAC according to final pathology. Univariate, multivariate, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed to evaluate whether CT imaging could distinguish pre-IAC from IAC. The concordance rates of CT imaging and intraoperative frozen section analyses with final pathology were also compared to determine their accuracies. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis identified tumor size as an independent distinguishing factor. ROC curve analyses showed that the optimal cut-off sizes for distinguishing pre-IAC from IAC for GGNs, PSNs, and solid nodules were 10.79, 11.48, and 11.45 mm, respectively. The concordance rate of CT imaging with final pathology was significantly greater than the concordance rate of intraoperative frozen section analysis with final pathology (P = 0.041). CONCLUSION: CT imaging could distinguish pre-IAC from IAC in patients with early-stage lung adenocarcinoma. Because of its accuracy in predicting final pathology, CT imaging could contribute to decisions associated with surgical extent. Multicenter standardized trials are needed to confirm the findings in this study.

BACKGROUND: Golden 2-Like (G2-like) transcription factors play an important role in plant development. However, the roles of these G2-like regulatory genes in response to abiotic stresses in tomato are not well understood. RESULTS: In this study, we identified 66 putative G2-like genes in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and classified them into 5 groups (I to V) according to gene structure, motif composition and phylogenetic analysis. The G2-like genes were unevenly distributed across all 12 chromosomes. There were nine pairs of duplicated gene segments and four tandem duplicated SlGlk genes. Analysis of the cis-regulatory elements (CREs) showed that the promoter regions of SlGlks contain many kinds of stress- and hormone-related CREs. Based on RNA-seq, SlGlks were expressed in response to three abiotic stresses. Thirty-six differentially expressed SlGlks were identified; these genes have multiple functions according to Gene Ontology (GO) analysis and are enriched mainly in the zeatin biosynthesis pathway. Further studies exhibited that silencing SlGlk16 in tomato would reduce drought stress tolerance by earlier wilted, lower superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) activities, less Pro contents and more MDA contents. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the results of this study provide comprehensive information on G2-like transcription factors and G2-like genes that may be expressed in response to abiotic stresses.

Epidemiological evidence on the relationship between serum iron and liver diseases is limited. This study aims to investigate whether serum iron is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and advanced hepatic fibrosis (AHF). Cross-sectional data for adults aged ≥ 18 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018 were analyzed. Odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of NAFLD and AHF associated with serum iron were estimated using multivariable logistic regression models. A total of 18,031 males and 18,989 females were included in the analysis. After multivariable adjustment for potential confounders, serum iron was significantly and inversely associated with NAFLD in both genders (P-trend < 0.001) and AHF in females (P-trend = 0.018). Compared to the bottom quartile, those in higher quartiles of serum iron had no significant ORs for AHF in males, but the trend across the quartiles was significant (P-trend = 0.046). In conclusion, higher serum iron level was associated with lower risk of NAFLD in males and females, and with lower risk of AHF in females but not in males. No significant racial/ethnical differences in these associations were observed.

The effects of NaCl and its partial substitutes (KCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2) on solubility, structural characteristics and aggregation behaviors of myofibrillar protein (MP) from pearl mussel muscle were investigated and compared. MP at 0.6 M NaCl was beneficial to protein unfolding and showed excellent potential functional properties. When NaCl was substituted in low level, MPs also showed good solubility and ordered microstructure as well as NaCl, especially MgCl2 and CaCl2, due to the unfolding of α-helical structures and subsequently exposed tyrosine residues and hydrophobic groups. However, the obviously increased disulfide bonds and hydrophobic interactions in high substitution level indicated the excessive non-sodium salts had negative effects on molecular rearrangement, leading to irregular and overly tight of microstructure. Thus, NaCl partially substituted by KCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2 in low substitution level is promising to improve functional properties of MP in low-sodium meat products.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to study and compare the clinical manifestations, auxiliary examinations, and therapeutic responses in patients with different myositis-specific antibody (MSA) types. METHOD: We retrospectively investigated the medical records of 143 hospitalized dermatomyositis patients, all of whom were tested for MSAs, and performed follow-up. Patients were divided into groups with and without anti-nuclear matrix protein 2 (NXP2) antibodies (17 vs 126 patients). Demographic, clinical manifestation (occurring at any time during the disease course), imaging, laboratory, treatment response, and survival data were collected for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Adult dermatomyositis patients with anti-NXP2 antibodies were more prone to dysphagia (P<0.001), had higher levels of muscle injury markers (CK peak, P=0.007; CK peak>1000 IU/L, P<0.001; CK-MB, P=0.002), were younger at onset (P=0.008), and were less likely to present with interstitial lung disease (P=0.016) than the anti-NXP2 antibody-negative subgroup. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that onset age (OR=0.96 CI 95%: 0.924-0.999, P=0.043) and dysphagia (OR=7.088, CI 95%: 1.824-27.536, P=0.005) were independent risk factors for anti-NXP2 antibody positivity. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis did not reveal that dermatomyositis patients with anti-NXP2 antibodies have a relatively worse prognosis. However, the disease course was more frequently polycyclic, and 68.75% of patients had a relapsing-remitting disease course. More than half (52.94%) of those who showed no response to treatment used at least 3 disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. CONCLUSIONS: We show the important clinical features of and risk factors for this unique antibody-mediated form of dermatomyositis. Although these patients had a relatively low mortality rate, they were prone to recurrence, and treatment was challenging.
