RESUMEN

The oxygen level in a tumor typically exhibits complex characteristics, ranging from mild hypoxia to moderate and even severe hypoxia. This poses significant challenges for the efficacy of photodynamic therapy, where oxygen is an essential element. Herein, we propose a novel therapeutic strategy and develop a series of lipid droplet-targeting photosensitive dyes (Ser-TPAs), i.e., in situ synergistic activation of two different electron transfer-type reactions. Based on this strategy, Ser-TPAs can synergistically generate O2˙- and nitrogen radicals regardless of the oxygen content, which results in a sustained high concentration of strongly oxidizing substances in the lipid droplets of cancer cells. As such, Ser-TPAs exhibited inhibitory activity against tumor growth in vivo, resulting in a significant reduction in tumor volume (V experimental group : V control group ≈ 0.07). This strategy offers a conceptual framework for the design of innovative photosensitive dyes that are suitable for cancer therapy in complex oxygen environments.

Over the past 18 years, green tides have persistently occurred in the Yellow Sea. Micropropagules of these algae are key to bloom formation, yet their species composition and succession during dissipation remain underexplored. During the dissipation process of accumulated green tide algae, a large number of micropropagules are released. This study monitored the dissipation of green tide algae at a coastal site, tracking micropropagules in water and sediment using an internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 5S rDNA primers. Results showed that the dissipation lasted about one month, with significant micropropagule release. Initially, micropropagules matched 5S-II Ulva prolifera, but later species like Ulva torta, Ulva simplex, Ulva flexuosa, and Ulva meridionalis emerged. Ulva meridionalis dominated sediment in July and August, while U. torta was prevalent in water, and U. flexuosa was dominant in other months. Accumulated U. prolifera in the intertidal zone may not contribute to the seeding of the next year's bloom. This study sheds light on the dissipation process and succession patterns of micropropagules in coastal environments.

Patients with hepatic failure are often accompanied by hepatic retinopathy, but the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the hepatic retinopathy remain unclear. In this study, we investigated how liver failure leads to hepatic retinopathy using bile duct ligation (BDL) rats as a cholestasis animal model. Light-dark box test was used to assess sensitivity to light, indexed as visual acuity. On D28 post-BDL, rats were subjected to light-dark box test and blood samples were collected for biochemical analyses. The rats then were euthanized. Liver, spleen and both side of eye were quickly harvested. We showed that BDL impaired rat sensitivity to light, significantly decreased the thickness of inner nuclear layer (INL), outer nuclear layer (ONL) and total retina, as well as the retinal cell numbers in ONL and ganglion cell layer (GCL). The expression of rhodopsin (RHO), brn-3a and GPX4 was significantly decreased in retina of BDL rats, whereas the expression of cleaved caspase 3, 8, 9, bax/bcl-2, RIP1, GFAP, and iba-1, as well as TUNEL-positive cells were significantly increased. In cultured retinal explant, we found that NH4Cl (0.2, 1, 5 mM) concentration-dependently impaired activity of retinal explant, decreased thickness of INL and ONL, downregulated expression of brn-3a, RHO and GFAP, increased expression of cl-caspase 3 and TUNEL-positive cell numbers, with NH4Cl (5 mM) almost completely disrupting the structure of the cultured retina; bilirubin (1 µM) significantly upregulated GFAP expression, whereas high level (10 µM) of bilirubin downregulated expression of GFAP. We further demonstrated in vivo that hyperammonemia impaired rat sensitivity to light, decreased thickness of INL and ONL, downregulated expression of RHO, brn-3a, GFAP and increased expression of cl-caspase 3; hyperbilirubinemia impaired rat sensitivity to light, upregulated expression of GFAP and iba-1. In conclusion, BDL impaired rat visual acuity due to the elevated levels of ammonia and bilirubin. Ammonia induced loss of retinal ganglion cells and rod photoreceptor cells via apoptosis-mediated cell death. Bilirubin impaired retinal function via activating microglia and Müller cells.

BACKGROUND: Medical school learning environment (MSLE) has a holistic impact on students' psychosomatic health, academic achievements, and personal development. Students in different grades perceive MSLE in different ways. Thus, it is essential to investigate the specific role of student's grade in the perception of MSLE. METHODS: Using the Johns Hopkins Learning Environment Scale (JHLES) as a quantification instrument for the perception level of MSLE, 10,901 medical students in 12 universities in China were categorized into low or high JHLES group according to their questionnaires. We investigated the relationship between student's grade and JHLES category by univariate analysis employing Pearson Chi-square test and Welch's ANOVA. Then multivariable logistic regression analysis confirmed the predictive efficacy of student's grade. A nomogram concerning the prediction of low JHLES score probability in medical students was also constructed. RESULTS: A significant difference between two JHLES categories among students in different grades was observed (p < 0.001), with the proportion of the high JHLES group dominating in grade 1, 5, and the graduate subgroups (p < 0.001). The mean JHLES score declined especially in the third and fourth graders compared to freshmen (p < 0.001), while the mean score among the fifth graders had a remarkable rebound from the third graders (p < 0.001). Most imperatively, identified by multivariable logistic regression analysis, students in grade 3 (OR = 1.470, 95% CI = 1.265-1.709, p < 0.001) and 4 (OR = 1.578, 95% CI = 1.326-1.878, p < 0.001) perceived more negatively than freshmen. The constructed nomogram provided a promising prediction model for student's low JHLES score probability, with accuracy, accordance, and discrimination (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.627). CONCLUSION: The student's grade was a significant influencing factor in medical students' perception of MSLE. The perceptions among the third and fourth graders got worse, probably due to the worrying changes in various aspects of MSLE during that period. The relevant and appropriate interventions to improve medical students' perceptions are urgently needed.

Background: Study engagement is regarded important to medical students' physical and mental wellbeing. However, the relationship between learning environment of medical schools and the study engagement of medical students was still unclear. This study was aimed to ascertain the positive effect of learning environment in study engagement. Methods: We collected 10,901 valid questionnaires from 12 medical universities in China, and UWES-S was utilized to assess the study engagement levels. Then Pearson Chi-Square test and Welch's ANOVA test were conducted to find the relationship between study engagement and learning environment, and subgroup analysis was used to eradicate possible influence of confounding factors. After that, a multivariate analysis was performed to prove learning environment was an independent factor, and we constructed a nomogram as a predictive model. Results: With Pearson Chi-Square test (p < 0.001) and Welch's ANOVA test (p < 0.001), it proved that a good learning environment contributed to a higher mean of UWES scores. Subgroup analysis also showed statistical significance (p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, we could find that, taking "Good" as reference, "Excellent" (OR = 0.329, 95%CI = 0.295-0.366, p < 0.001) learning environment was conducive to one's study engagement, while "Common" (OR = 2.206, 95%CI = 1.989-2.446, p < 0.001), "Bad" (OR = 2.349, 95%CI = 1.597-3.454, p < 0.001), and "Terrible" (OR = 1.696, 95%CI = 1.015-2.834, p = 0.044) learning environment only resulted into relatively bad study engagement. Depending on the result, a nomogram was drawn, which had predictive discrimination and accuracy (AUC = 0.680). Conclusion: We concluded that learning environment of school was an independent factor of medical student's study engagement. A higher level of learning environment of medical school came with a higher level of medical students' study engagement. The nomogram could serve as a predictive reference for the educators and researchers.

This empirical study investigated the associations between psychological well-being, job satisfaction, trust in supervisor, and job performance. Data were collected from 277 company employees in Bahrain through online questionnaires and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The purpose of the study is to examine the relationships between psychological well-being, job satisfaction, trust in supervisor, and job performance through the use of a theoretical framework that synthesizes prominent models in the field of organizational psychology. The research findings indicate a positive influence of psychological well-being on both job satisfaction and job performance. Notably, job satisfaction plays a mediating role in the relationship between psychological well-being and job performance. The study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering an integrated approach to examining the intricate connections between psychological well-being, job satisfaction, trust in supervisor, and job performance, which all are crucial for creating a sustainable workplace environment and outcomes. Practical implications highlight the need for organizations to prioritize employee psychological well-being through initiatives such as wellness programs and supportive work environments, as these initiatives directly influence job satisfaction and performance. Job satisfaction acts as a significant mediator, emphasizing the importance of fair compensation, recognition, and professional development in enhancing job satisfaction.

The testis serves as the primary site for spermatogenesis in mammals and is a crucial organ for the secretion of male hormones. Heat stress (HS) can have adverse effects on the seminiferous tubules, sperm quality, and sperm fertilization capability within the testis. Despite numerous previous studies describing various time points after heat stress in mice, a systematic and comprehensive dataset on heat stress and recovery in mice has been lacking. This study aimed to explore the gene expression changes in the recovery of multiple seminiferous epithelial cycles and spermatogenic cycles in mouse testicles after heat stress. We obtained high-throughput bulk RNA-seq data from testicular tissue of 4 NC mice and 32 HS mice (divided into 9 groups: NC, 30 min, 2 h, 6 h, 24 h, 3d, 8d, 24d, 47d, and 95d) and illustrated the dynamic changes in differential genes. This data set provides valuable insights into the detailed dynamic changes of one or more spermatogenic cycles after heat stress in mouse testicles, as well as the molecular mechanisms involved.

Air pollution is a challenge for many cities. The digital economy enhances support for environmental pollution management, while the mechanisms and scaling heterogeneity remain unclear. This study explored the contribution of digital economy development to PM2.5 concentrations control in China and driving mechanisms in different economic subregions and urban agglomerations. Results show that the spillover transfer effect on air pollution mitigation far exceeded the direct effect at different scales. At the national scale, the air pollution mitigation effect of digital economy was mainly through empowering industrial structure optimization and green technology innovation, while it also affected economic subregions and urban agglomerations through varying scenario combinations of pathways with structural optimization, green production, resource allocation, and technology innovation. Research findings provide support for cross-regional joint management strategies of digital economy and air quality and designing regionally differentiated pollution control pathways in the digital economy dimension.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries with ≥70% total body surface area (TBSA) are especially acute and life-threatening, leading to severe complications and terrible prognosis, while a powerful model for prediction of overall survival (OS) is lacked. The objective of this study is to identify prognostic factors for the OS of patients with burn injury ≥70% TBSA, construct and validate a feasible predictive model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with burns ≥70% TBSA admitted and treated between 2010 and 2020 in our hospital were included. A cohort of the patients from the Kunshan explosion were assigned as the validation set. The Chi-square test and K-M survival analysis were conducted to identify potential predictors for OS. Then, multi-variate Cox regression analysis was performed to identify the independent factors. Afterwards, we constructed a nomogram to predict OS probability. Finally, the Kunshan cohort was applied as an external validation set. RESULTS: Gender, the percentage of third- and fourth-degree burn as well as organ dysfunction were identified as significant independent factors. A nomogram only based on the factors of the individuals was built and evidenced to have promising predictive accuracy, accordance, and discrimination by both internal and external validation. CONCLUSIONS: This study recognized significant influencing factors for the OS of patients with burns ≥70% TBSA. Furthermore, our nomogram proved to be an effective tool for doctors to quickly evaluate patients' outcomes and make appropriate clinical decisions at an early stage of treatment.

Primary lung cancer in childhood is extremely rare, with an incidence rate of less than 2/100,0000, and pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (PMEC), is even rarer. Their symptoms are usually not specific, and there are no guidelines for their management, which makes their clinical management a challenge for pediatricians. The purpose of this report is to discuss the clinical presentation, positive signs, examinations, pathological characteristics, surgical modalities, chemotherapy regimens, and prognosis in children. The clinical data of four patients diagnosed with PMEC at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from June 2021 to November 2022 were retrospectively analyzed, and their clinical features, treatment, and prognosis were summarized. Among them, two were male and two were female; their ages ranged from 3 years and 10 months to 10 years and 11 months, and all were staged according to tumor node metastasis classification (TNM). Immunohistochemical tests were performed in all children, among which four cases were positive for cytokeratin (CK), two cases were positive for CK7, four cases were positive for p63, about 5-10% of tumor cells were positive for Ki67. Among the four children, three had surgery alone and one had surgery + chemotherapy. All four children are presently living, with no evidence of tumor recurrence or metastasis. PMEC in children is very rare, and its age of onset and symptoms are not specific, and there is no obvious correlation with gender. Its diagnosis mainly relies on pathomorphological diagnosis, and immunohistochemical detection has no specific performance. The prognosis of children with PMEC is related to the clinical stage and whether surgery is performed. Whether further chemotherapy or radiotherapy is needed for patients who cannot undergo surgical resection and for those who have a combination of distant metastases requires further clinical studies.

The symptoms are usually not specific, and there are no guidelines for its management, which is a challenge for doctors. The purpose of this report is to discuss the signs and symptoms medical examinations, disease characteristics, surgical procedures, chemotherapy regimens and prognosis in children with pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The clinical data of four patients diagnosed with pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from June 2021 to November 2022 were analyzed, and their clinical features, treatment and prognosis were summarized. All four children are currently alive, and there is no recurrence or spread of the tumor after treatment. We have discussed various aspects of the disease, such as the rate of occurrence, causes, signs and symptoms, the way in which it might be diagnosed and treated, and the survival rate after operation, hoping to provide some insights for future work.

ABSTRACT: Male infertility is a global issue caused by poor sperm quality, particularly motility. Enhancement of the sperm quality may improve the fertilization rate in assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment. Scriptaid, with a novel human sperm motility-stimulating activity, has been investigated as a prospective agent for improving sperm quality and fertilization rate in ART. We evaluated the effects of Scriptaid on asthenozoospermic (AZS) semen, including its impact on motility stimulation and protective effects on cryopreservation and duration of motility, by computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA). Sperm quality improvement by Scriptaid was characterized by increased hyaluronan-binding activity, tyrosine phosphorylation, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration, mitochondrial membrane potential, and an ameliorated AZS fertilization rate in clinical intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) experiments. Furthermore, our identification of active Scriptaid analogs and different metabolites induced by Scriptaid in spermatozoa lays a solid foundation for the future biomechanical exploration of sperm function. In summary, Scriptaid is a potential candidate for the treatment of male infertility in vitro as it improves sperm quality, prolongs sperm viability, and increases the fertilization rate.

Understanding the role of mechanical force on tissue nutrient transport is essential, as sustained force may affect nutrient levels within the disc and initiate disc degeneration. This study aims to evaluate the time-dependent effects of different compressive force amplitudes as well as tensile force on glucose concentration and cell viability within the disc. Based on the mechano-electrochemical mixture theory, a multiphasic finite element model of the lumbar intervertebral disc was developed. The minimum glucose concentration and minimum cell density in both normal and degenerated discs were predicted for different compressive force amplitudes, tensile force, and corresponding creep time. Under high compressive force, the minimum glucose concentration exhibited an increasing and then decreasing trend with creep time in the normal disc, whereas that of the degenerated disc increased, then decreased, and finally increased again. At steady state, a higher compressive force was accompanied by a lower glucose concentration distribution. In the degenerated disc, the minimum cell density was negatively correlated with creep time, with a greater range of affected tissue under a higher compressive force. For tensile force, the minimum glucose concentration of the degenerated disc raised over time. This study highlighted the importance of creep time, force magnitude, and force type in affecting nutrient concentration and cell viability. Sustained weight-bearing activities could deteriorate the nutrient environment of the degenerated disc, while tensile force might have a nonnegligible role in effectively improving nutrient levels within the degenerated disc.

The high toxicity and persistence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the environment require effective remediation of PCBs-contaminated soil. This study used polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG-4000) to modify zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) and conducted characterization analysis. It was found that when the addition amount of PLA was 2 %, the dispersion of modified nZVI was better. The initial pH and water to soil ratio were subjected to single factor experiments and fitted using RSM response surface methodology. The optimal reaction conditions were obtained as follows: the addition amount was 84 g·kg-1, the initial pH was 5.41, and the optimal removal rate was 74 % when the ratio of water to soil was 1.8:1. PLA and PEG-4000 were biodegradable substances that played crucial roles in enhancing the effectiveness of nZVI for PCBs-contaminated soil. By encapsulating nZVI with PLA, we significantly reduced its oxidation when exposed to air. Additionally, the inclusion of PEG-4000 helped prevent the particles from clumping together. The synergistic effect of them increased the effective reaction of nZVI and PCBs and ultimately leading to more efficient remediation. This study offered a new pathway for the efficient green remediation of PCBs-contaminated soil.

BACKGROUND: Various postoperative staging systems were developed to assess the outcome of differentiated thyroid cancer from initial risk after surgery to dynamic changing prognosis during follow-up. The objective of our retrospective cohort study was to identify risk factors contributing to macroscopic positive surgical margin (R2 resection) and parameters in discriminating the treatment responses and prognosis among R2 patients. METHODS: In total, 242 differentiated thyroid cancer patients with extrathyroidal extension who underwent a thyroidectomy at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between January 2013 and July 2018, were included. The patients were grouped according to the presence or absence of gross residual disease (R2). The R2 patients were further classified into two categories according to their treatment response into excellent and nonexcellent groups. The parameters and treatment outcomes were compared between these groups. RESULTS: The mean follow-up time was 45.3 months. Two hundred seven (85.5%) patients had either surgery-free or microscopic margins (R0/R1), while 35 (14.5%) had R2 resection. In the R2 group (n = 35), 15 (42.9%) patients achieved an excellent response, while 20 (57.1%) achieved a nonexcellent response. Statistically significant differences were observed in the extent of neck dissection, TSH-Tg level, post-RAI Tg level, nodal status, and recurrence between the two groups. The Kaplan-Meier curves for 5-year local and distant recurrence-free survival of R0/R1 versus R2 patients were 90.0% versus 66.3%, and 98.4% versus 90.7%, respectively ( p < 0.001). Among the R2 patients, the excellent responders had a higher local recurrence-free survival than nonexcellent responders (93.3% vs. 45.1%, p = 0.008). CONCLUSION: There are significant disparities in recurrence-free survival among R2 patients with different treatment responses. The nodal status of papillary thyroid cancer and thyroglobulin level after thyroidectomy and RAI were factors contributing to difference in their treatment responses.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the network structures of symptoms and symptom clusters in patients with lung cancer post-chemotherapy, with a focus on identifying the central symptom cluster. Understanding the central cluster is crucial for targeted and effective symptom management. Methods: Symptom occurrence and severity were assessed using the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS). Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to explore symptom clusters, while network analysis unveiled the network structure and pinpointed the central symptom cluster. Results: The study included 512 patients with lung cancer. Four distinct symptom clusters emerged: sickness behavior, psychological, lung cancer-specific, and epithelial. The sickness behavior symptom cluster was identified as the central symptom cluster. Conclusions: This research designates the sickness behavior symptom cluster as central in post-chemotherapy patients with lung cancer, offering valuable insights for clinical nurses in devising more effective symptom management strategies. BACKGROUND: Malignant mesothelioma is a type of infrequent tumor that is substantially related to asbestos exposure and has a terrible prognosis. We tried to produce a fibroblast differentiation-related gene set for creating a novel classification and prognostic prediction model of MESO. METHOD: Three databases, including NCBI-GEO, TCGA, and MET-500, separately provide single-cell RNA sequencing data, bulk RNA sequencing profiles of MESO, and RNA sequencing information on bone metastatic tumors. Dimensionality reduction and clustering analysis were leveraged to acquire fibroblast subtypes in the MESO microenvironment. The fibroblast differentiation-related genes (FDGs), which were associated with survival and subsequently utilized to generate the MESO categorization and prognostic prediction model, were selected in combination with pseudotime analysis and survival information from the TCGA database. Then, regulatory network was constructed for each MESO subtype, and candidate inhibitors were predicted. Clinical specimens were collected for further validation. RESULT: A total of six fibroblast subtypes, three differentiation states, and 39 FDGs were identified. Based on the expression level of FDGs, three MESO subtypes were distinguished in the fibroblast differentiation-based classification (FDBC). In the multivariate prognostic prediction model, the risk score that was dependent on the expression level of several important FDGs, was verified to be an independently effective prognostic factor and worked well in internal cohorts. Finally, we predicted 24 potential drugs for the treatment of MESO. Moreover, immunohistochemical staining and statistical analysis provided further validation. CONCLUSION: Fibroblast differentiation-related genes (FDGs), especially those in low-differentiation states, might participate in the proliferation and invasion of MESO. Hopefully, the raised clinical subtyping of MESO would provide references for clinical practitioners.

MiRNAs play an important role in regulating plant growth and immune response. Mosaic diseases are recognized as the most important plant diseases in the world, and mosaic symptoms are recovery tissues formed by plants against virus infection. However, the mechanism of the formation of mosaic symptoms remains elusive. In this study, two typical mosaic systems consisting of Nicotiana tabacum-cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and N. tabacum-tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) were used to investigate the relevance of miRNAs to the appearance of mosaic symptoms. The results of miRNA-seq showed that there were significant differences in miRNA abundance between dark green tissues and chlorotic tissues in mosaic leaves caused by the infection of CMV or TMV. Compared with healthy tissues, miRNA expression was significantly increased in chlorotic tissues, but slightly increased in dark green tissues. Three miRNAs, namely miR1919, miR390a, and miR6157, were identified to be strongly up-regulated in chlorotic tissues of both mosaic systems. Results of overexpressing or silencing of the three miRNAs proved that they were related to chlorophyll synthesis, auxin response, and small GTPase-mediated immunity pathway, which were corresponding to the phenotype, physiological parameters and susceptibility of the chlorotic tissues in mosaic leaves. Besides, the newly identified novel-miRNA48, novel-miRNA96 and novel-miRNA103 may also be involved in this formation of mosaic symptoms. Taken together, our results demonstrated that miR1919, miR390a and miR6157 are involved in the formation of mosaic symptoms and plant antiviral responses, providing new insight into the role of miRNAs in the formation of recovery tissue and plant immunity.

BACKGROUND: Diminished ovarian reserve has a serious impact on female reproduction with an increasing incidence every year. An important cause of this is oxidative stress. Rubi fructus, a traditional medicinal and edible plant, has shown therapeutic effects against gynecological diseases. Vanillic acid, isoquercitrin, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, kaempferol-3-O-sophoroside, oleanolic acid, tormentic acid, tiliroside, and ellagic acid are the major bioactive components in R. fructus. However, studies involved in the effectiveness and mechanism of these components in oxidative stress-induced ovarian dysfunction are scarce. RESULTS: In this study, the protective mechanisms of the bioactive components were evaluated in human ovarian granulosa cells. Isoquercitrin was significantly superior to other bioactive components in relieving damage in human ovarian granulosa cells induced by 2,2-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride, considering enhanced cell viability, reduced reactive oxygen species accumulation, and improved mitochondrial membrane potential level. Isoquercitrin protected human ovarian granulosa cells from oxidative stress by regulating the enzyme activity of glutathione peroxidase, inhibiting cell apoptosis, improving the expression of genes related to oxidative stress, and ameliorating heme oxygenase 1 protein expression. CONCLUSION: Isoquercitrin, a bioactive component in R. fructus, has a significant protective effect on oxidative damage induced by 2,2-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride in human ovarian granulosa cells, providing evidence for its potential application in protecting ovarian function. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Recent studies have emphasized the importance of dynamic activity in the development of myelopathy. However, current knowledge of how degenerative factors affect the spinal cord during motion is still limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of various types of preexisting herniated cervical disc and the ligamentum flavum ossification on the spinal cord during cervical flexion and extension. A detailed dynamic fluid-structure interaction finite element model of the cervical spine with the spinal cord was developed and validated. The changes of von Mises stress and maximum principal strain within the spinal cord in the period of normal, hyperflexion, and hyperextension were investigated, considering various types and grades of disc herniation and ossification of the ligamentum flavum. The flexion and extension of the cervical spine with spinal canal encroachment induced high stress and strain inside the spinal cord, and this effect was also amplified by increased canal encroachments and cervical hypermobility. The spinal cord might evade lateral encroachment, leading to a reduction in the maximum stress and principal strain within the spinal cord in local-type herniation. Although the impact was limited in the case of diffuse type, the maximum stress tended to appear in the white matter near the encroachment site while compression from both ventral and dorsal was essential to make maximum stress appear in the grey matter. The existence of canal encroachment can reduce the safe range for spinal cord activities, and hypermobility activities may induce spinal cord injury. Besides, the ligamentum flavum plays an important role in the development of central canal syndrome.Significance. This model will enable researchers to have a better understanding of the influence of cervical degenerative diseases on the spinal cord during extension and flexion.

PURPOSE: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) has garnered considerable attention, yet limited research has delved into nuanced distinctions among varying degrees of CRCI in colorectal cancer survivors. This study aimed to identify distinct subgroups based on the patterns of CRCI, assess the heterogeneity among different subgroups, and investigate the potential correlations between the subgroups of CRCI and inflammation-related biomarkers. METHODS: 268 colorectal cancer patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, followed by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function. The determination of CRCI subgroups was accomplished by the latent profile analysis (LPA). The effects of inflammation-related biomarkers on CRCI were examined using the binary logistic regression analysis. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves assessed the diagnostic efficacy of inflammation-related biomarkers. RESULTS: Two latent profiles were identified: CRCI (n = 64, 23.88%) and non-CRCI (n = 204, 76.12%). Independent factors for CRCI in colorectal cancer patients were SIRI (OR = 3.248, 95%CI [1.197-8.807], P = 0.021) and ALI (OR = 0.962, 95%CI [0.937-0.989], P = 0.005). The areas under the curve (AUCs) for SIRI and ALI in predicting CRCI were 0.781 and 0.774, with the optimal cut-off values being 0.70 and 37.04, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Colorectal cancer patients exhibited divergent cognitive performance profiles, categorized into two subgroups based on LPA. SIRI and ALI were identified as independent factors for CRCI, demonstrating strong diagnostic accuracy. These two inflammation-related biomarkers may potentially be novel indicators to identify and manage the development of CRCI among colorectal cancer patients.
