RESUMEN

In living and synthetic active matter systems, the constituents can self-propel and interact with each other and with the environment through various physicochemical mechanisms. Among these mechanisms, chemotactic and auto-chemotactic effects are widely observed. The impact of (auto-)chemotactic effects on achiral active matter has been a recent research focus. However, the influence of these effects on chiral active matter remains elusive. Here, we develop a Brownian dynamics model coupled with a diffusion equation to examine the dynamics of auto-chemotactic chiral active droplets in both quasi-two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) systems. By quantifying the droplet trajectory as a function of the dimensionless Péclet number and chemotactic strength, our simulations well reproduce the curling and helical trajectories of nematic droplets in a surfactant-rich solution reported by Krüger et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 048003 (2016)]. The modeled curling trajectory in 2D exhibits an emergent chirality, also consistent with the experiment. We further show that the geometry of the chiral droplet trajectories, characterized by the pitch and diameter, can be used to infer the velocities of the droplet. Interestingly, we find that, unlike the achiral case, the velocities of chiral active droplets show dimensionality dependence: its mean instantaneous velocity is higher in 3D than in 2D, whereas its mean migration velocity is lower in 3D than in 2D. Taken together, our particle-based simulations provide new insights into the dynamics of auto-chemotactic chiral active droplets, reveal the effects of dimensionality, and pave the way toward their applications, such as drug delivery, sensors, and micro-reactors.

Traditional open head and neck surgery often leaves permanent scars, significantly affecting appearance. The emergence of surgical robots has introduced a new era for minimally invasive surgery. However, the complex anatomy of the head and neck region, particularly the oral and maxillofacial areas, combined with the high costs associated with established systems such as the da Vinci, has limited the widespread adoption of surgical robots in this field. Recently, surgical robotic platform in China has developed rapidly, exemplified by the promise shown by the KangDuo Surgical Robot (KD-SR). Although the KD-SR has achieved some results comparable to the da Vinci surgical robot in urology and colorectal surgery, its performance in complex head and neck regions remains untested. This study evaluated the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of the newly developed KD-SR-01, comparing it with standard endoscopic systems in head and neck procedures on porcine models. We performed parotidectomy, submandibular gland resection, and neck dissection, collected baseline characteristics, perioperative data, and specifically assessed cognitive workload using the NASA-TLX. None of the robotic procedures were converted to endoscopic or open surgery. The results showed no significant difference in operation time between the two groups (P = 0.126), better intraoperative bleeding control (P = 0.001), and a significant reduction in cognitive workload (P < 0.001) in the robotic group. In conclusion, the KD-SR-01 is feasible, effective, and safe for head and neck surgery. Further investigation through well-designed clinical trials with long-term follow-up is necessary to establish the full potential of this emerging robotic platform.

The United Nations proposed the Sustainable Development Goals with the aim to make human settlements in cities resilient and sustainable. The excessive discharge of urban waste including sludge and garden waste can pollute groundwater and lead to the emission of greenhouse gases (e.g., CH4). The proper recycling of urban waste is essential for responsible consumption and production, reducing environmental pollution and addressing climate change issues. This study aimed to prepare biochar with high adsorption amounts of iodine using urban sludge and peach wood from garden waste. The study was conducted to examine the variations in the mass ratio between urban sludge and peach wood (2/1, 1/1, and 1/2) as well as pyrolysis temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C) on the carbon yield and adsorption capacities of biochar. Scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, powder X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis were used to characterize the biochar produced at different pyrolysis temperatures and mass ratios. The results indicate that the carbon yield of biochar was found to be the highest (>60%) at a pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C across different pyrolysis temperatures. The absorbed amounts of iodine in the aqueous solution ranged from 86 to 223 mg g-1 at a mass ratio of 1:1 between urban sludge and peach wood, which were comparably higher than those observed in other mass ratios. This study advances water treatment by offering a cost-effective method by using biochar derived from the processing of urban sludge and garden waste.

Traditional artificial vision systems built using separate sensing, computing, and storage units have problems with high power consumption and latency caused by frequent data transmission between functional units. An effective approach is to transfer some memory and computing tasks to the sensor, enabling the simultaneous perception-storage-processing of light signals. Here, an optical-electrical coordinately modulated memristor is proposed, which controls the conductivity by means of polarization of the 2D ferroelectric Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite film at room temperature. The residual polarization shows no significant decay after 109-cycle polarization reversals, indicating that the device has high durability. By adjusting the pulse parameters, the device can simulate the bio-synaptic long/short-term plasticity, which enables the control of conductivity with a high linearity of ≈0.997. Based on the device, a two-layer feedforward neural network is built to recognize handwritten digits, and the recognition accuracy is as high as 97.150%. Meanwhile, building optical-electrical reserve pool system can improve 14.550% for face recognition accuracy, further demonstrating its potential for the field of neural morphological visual systems, with high density and low energy loss.

Here, we present a straightforward strategy for designing silicon grating-based metasurfaces tailored for narrow near-infrared bandpass filtering. By selecting appropriate structural parameters for the grating and including periodic groove perturbations within each grating slit, transverse guided mode resonances (GMRs) propagating perpendicular and parallel to the grating slit are created to provide wide out-of-band suppression and high-Q filter responses, respectively. The destructive and constructive interference between radiations from groove perturbations are then introduced to eliminate all GMRs except one, producing a single-band bandpass filter. Simply adjusting the period of the groove perturbations allows precise tuning of the passband's central wavelength across the operational spectral range from 1350 nm to 1750nm, throughout which the passband exhibits a Q-factor exceeding 9,000 and the attenuation level outside the passband remains below 1%. Furthermore, our proposed narrow bandpass filters are found to be robust against the potential fabrication imperfections, such as variations in groove size and position.

The study investigated the protective effects and mechanisms of probiotics in conjunction with an anti-PD-L1 antibody on the immune functions of septic mice. Sixty-four mice were assigned to sepsis groups receiving vehicle, probiotics, and anti-PD-L1 antibody individually or in combination, with healthy mice as controls. Sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), followed by intraperitoneal Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection. Blood and tissues were collected one day post-injection for detecting inflammation-related cytokines, Treg, PI3K/Akt pathway-related protein expression, and lung tissue pathology. The survival time of the remaining ten mice was recorded over seven days. Compared to healthy mice, septic mice given PBS exhibited significantly different serum levels of IL-6, IL-8, IL-17, IL-10, and IFN-γ (all p < 0.001). Treatment with anti-PD-L1 antibody combined with probiotics significantly increased the 7-day survival rate in septic mice, accompanied by decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines, increased anti-inflammatory cytokines, improved oxidative stress, reduced lung injury, and enhanced Th17/Treg balance. This combined therapy demonstrated superior efficacy compared to antibodies or probiotics alone. Additionally, it facilitated peripheral blood polymorphonuclear neutrophil apoptosis, enhancing protection by blocking PD-L1 function and inhibiting PI3K-dependent AKT phosphorylation. In conclusion, combining probiotics with an anti-PD-L1 antibody enhances protective effects in septic mice by reducing serum inflammatory factors, promoting neutrophil apoptosis, regulating Th17/Treg balance, and inhibiting the PI3K/Akt pathway.

Administration of a new drug candidate in a first-in-human (FIH) clinical trial is a particularly challenging phase in drug development and is especially true for immunomodulators, which are a diverse and complex class of drugs with a broad range of mechanisms of action and associated safety risks. Risk is generally greater for immunostimulators, in which safety concerns are associated with acute toxicity, compared to immunosuppressors, where the risks are related to chronic effects. Current methodologies for FIH dose selection for immunostimulators are focused primarily on identifying the minimum anticipated biological effect level (MABEL), which has often resulted in sub-therapeutic doses, leading to long and costly escalation phases. The Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) - Immuno-Safety Technical Committee (ITC) organized a project to address this issue through two complementary approaches: (i) an industry survey on FIH dose selection strategies and (ii) detailed case studies for immunomodulators in oncology and non-oncology indications. Key messages from the industry survey responses highlighted a preference toward more dynamic PK/PD approaches as in vitro assays are seemingly not representative of true physiological conditions for immunomodulators. These principles are highlighted in case studies. To address the above themes, we have proposed a revised decision tree, which expands on the guidance by the IQ MABEL Working Group (Leach et al. 2021). This approach facilitates a more refined recommendation of FIH dose selection for immunomodulators, allowing for a nuanced consideration of their mechanisms of action (MOAs) and the associated risk-to-benefit ratio, among other factors.

MOTIVATION: The Full-text index in Minute space (FM-index) is a memory-efficient data structure widely used in bioinformatics for solving the fundamental pattern-matching task of searching for short patterns within a long reference. With the demand for short query patterns, the k-ordered concept has been proposed for FM-indexes. However, few construction algorithms in the state of the art fully exploit this idea to achieve significant speedups in the pan-genome era. RESULTS: We introduce the k-ordered Induced Suffix Sorting (kISS) for efficient construction and utilization of k-ordered FM-indexes. We present an algorithmic workflow for building k-ordered suffix arrays, incorporating two novel strategies to improve time and memory efficiency. We also demonstrate the compatibility of integrating k-ordered FM-indexes with locate operations in FMtree. Experiments show that kISS can improve the construction time, and the generated k-ordered suffix array can also be applied to FMtree without any additional in computation or memory usage. Metal smelting and combustion of solid fuels produce significant quantities of waste slag, leading to issues such as land occupation and environmental pollution. Understanding and controlling the microscale crystallization phenomena of these slags during thermal treatment is crucial for transforming waste slags into materials suitable for carbon capture or glass ceramics. Previous research has primarily focused on macroscopic crystallization behaviors, significantly advancing the utilization of waste slags in cement clinker production. However, macroscopic results are inadequate for precisely controlling the microscale crystallization behaviors of waste slags. Here, we employed the single hot thermocouple technique to visually explore crystal growth modes, shapes, sizes, numbers, and translational rates of the crystal growth front in a representative blast furnace slag under various isothermal temperatures. The results revealed that crystals exhibited five modes as the isothermal temperature gradually increased, including equiaxed, equiaxed & columnar, columnar, columnar & planar, and planar. Moreover, the translational rate of the crystal growth front increased from 0.011 µm·s-1 to 43.7 µm·s-1 with an increase in the isothermal temperature. Simultaneously, the number of crystals decreased from around 104 to 100 µm-2. On this basis, correlations between microscale crystallization behaviors and isothermal temperature were established to fill the current gap.

PURPOSE: To evaluate curvature changes in different regions and their correlation with corneal epithelial remodeling in myopic patients undergoing femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) and transepithelial refractive keratectomy (Trans-PRK) after surgery. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-three patients (163 right eyes) undergoing Trans-PRK and LASIK were evaluated for up to 6 months using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure the epithelial thickness and corneal topography to measure corneal curvature in different areas (2 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm). We calculated the curvature ΔK (ΔK = preoperative - postoperative), ΔK5-2 (ΔK5-2 = K5mm - K2mm), ΔK7-5 (ΔK7-5 = K7mm - K5mm), and the epithelial thickness ΔET5-2 (ΔET5-2 = ET5mm - ET2mm) and ΔET7-5 (ΔET7-5= ET7mm - ET5mm). RESULTS: Corneal curvature flattened in each region of the two groups (all p < 0.001) and gradually steepened during the follow-up period. The Trans-PRK group flattened more significantly within 2 mm and 5 mm, while the FS-LASIK group at 7 mm. Both groups of ΔK decreased over time. Both groups of ΔK5-2 and ΔK7-5 gradually decreased during the follow-up period (P5-2=0.025 and P7-5 < 0.001 for Trans-PRK, P5-2 = 0.011 and P7-5 < 0.001 for FS-LASIK). The corneal epithelium of the two groups gradually thickened during the follow-up period, with Trans-PRK significantly thickening in the central and peripheral regions and FS-LASIK in the central and paracentral regions. There is a significant correlation between the ΔK5-2 and ΔET5-2, ΔK7-5 and ΔET7-5 (all r > 0.37, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: All groups showed significant curvature flattening after surgery and gradually steepening during the follow-up period. The corneal epithelium thickness in both groups of 17 regions became thicker,. In contrast, Trans-PRK group showed more significant thickening to the periphery and the central 5 mm area of the FS-LASIK. This study indicates a significant positive correlation between differences in epithelial thickening in different regions and differences in curvature changes in the corresponding areas PRK, FS-LASIK, curvature, corneal epithelial thickness.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate the muscle differences in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) using opportunistic low-dose chest CT and to compare different methods for the segmentation of muscle in children. METHODS: This single center retrospective study enrolled children with OI and controls undergoing opportunistic low-dose chest CT obtained during the COVID pandemic. From the CT images, muscle size (cross-sectional area) and density (mean Hounsfield Units [HU]) of the trunk muscles were measured at the mid-T4 and the mid-T10 level using two methods, the fixed thresholds and the Gaussian mixture model. The Bland-Altman method was also used to compute the strength of agreement between two methods. Comparison of muscle results between OI and controls were analyzed with Student t tests. RESULTS: 20 children with OI (mean age, 9.1 ± 3.3 years, 15 males) and 40 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled. Mean differences between two methods were good. Children with OI had lower T4 and T10 muscle density than controls measured by the fixed thresholds (41.2 HU vs. 48.0 HU, p < 0.01; 37.3 HU vs. 45.9 HU, p < 0.01). However, children with OI had lower T4 muscle size, T4 muscle density, T10 muscle size and T10 muscle density than controls measured by the Gaussian mixture model (110.9 vs. 127.2 cm2, p = 0.03; 44.6 HU vs. 51.3 HU, p < 0.01; 72.6 vs. 88.0 cm2, p = 0.01; 41.6 HU vs. 50.3 HU, p < 0.01, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Children with OI had lower trunk muscle density indicating that OI might also impair muscle quality. Moreover, the fixed thresholds may not be suitable for segmentation of muscle in children.

Isorhynchophylline (IRN), a tetracyclic indole alkaloid, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities against cardiovascular diseases and central nervous system disorders. Acute lung injury (ALI) is a manifestation of inflammation concentrated in the lungs and has a high incidence rate and mortality The purpose of this study is to explain the mechanism of IRN in the treatment of acute lung injury and to provide a new scheme for clinical treatment. The experimental mice were divided into three groups: CTRL, LPS, LPS+IRN. The mouse model of ALI was established by inhaling LPS solution through nose. After continuous administration of IRN solution for 7 days, the mice in LPS+IRN group were killed and the lung tissue was collected for detection. Proteomic (Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD050432) results showed that 5727 proteins were detected in mouse lung tissues, and 16 proteins were screened out. IRN could reverse the trend of these differential proteins. In addition, IRN can act on integrin αM to reduce neutrophil recruitment and thereby produce anti-inflammatory effects and may suppress neutrophil migration through the leukocyte transendothelial migration pathway. TUNEL and RT-PCR experiments revealed that LPS-induced ALI in mice increases the apoptosis of lung tissues, damage to alveolar epithelial cells and levels of inflammatory factors. Treatment with IRN can repair tissues, improve lung tissue pathology and reduce lung inflammation.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has emerged as a predominant liver disease worldwide, lacking approved drugs for clinical intervention at present. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) is used to assess the anti-inflammatory properties of diets, with higher CDAI indicating greater exposure to antioxidants. Therefore, our study aimed to explore the relationship between CDAI and MASLD in order to identify potential therapeutic approaches. We collected data from 12,286 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2017 to 2020 for analysis. The correlation between CDAI and MASLD status, controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) was evaluated by adjusting for confounding variables using weighted binary logistic regression model, linear regression model, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression. The median CDAI in this study was - 0.3055 (interquartile range [IQR], - 2.299 to 2.290). The CDAI was higher in the population characterized by being young, female, higher income, absence of diabetes, and non-MASLD. After multivariable adjustment, the results of the weighted linear regression model suggested that higher CDAI may be associated with a decrease in CAP values; the results of the RCS regression model indicated significant non-linear relationships between MASLD status, CAP, LSM, and CDAI. The CDAI corresponding to the inflection points of the relationship curves between MASLD status, CAP, LSM, and CDAI were 0.349, 0.699, and 0.174, respectively. After further stratification by gender, we found that the relationship between MASLD status, CAP, and CDAI was significantly linear for females, whereas for males, it was non-linear, and the CDAI values corresponding to the inflection points in the curves for males were 1.325 and 0.985, respectively. We found that higher CDAI may be associated with decreased CAP values, particularly significant in females, suggesting that the intake of complex dietary antioxidants may ameliorate hepatic steatosis and reduce the occurrence of MASLD. Therefore, promoting dietary patterns rich in antioxidants may be an appropriate strategy to reduce the incidence of MASLD.

Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, is clinically used as a glucose-lowering and weight loss medication due to its effects on energy metabolism. In heart failure, energy production is impaired due to altered mitochondrial function and increased glycolysis. However, the impact of semaglutide on cardiomyocyte metabolism under pressure overload remains unclear. Here we demonstrate that semaglutide improves cardiac function and reduces hypertrophy and fibrosis in a mouse model of pressure overload-induced heart failure. Semaglutide preserves mitochondrial structure and function under chronic stress. Metabolomics reveals that semaglutide reduces mitochondrial damage, lipid accumulation, and ATP deficiency by promoting pyruvate entry into the tricarboxylic acid cycle and increasing fatty acid oxidation. Transcriptional analysis shows that semaglutide regulates myocardial energy metabolism through the Creb5/NR4a1 axis in the PI3K/AKT pathway, reducing NR4a1 expression and its translocation to mitochondria. NR4a1 knockdown ameliorates mitochondrial dysfunction and abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism in the heart. These findings suggest that semaglutide may be a therapeutic agent for improving cardiac remodeling by modulating energy metabolism.

OBJECTIVE: Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) results in significant fibrosis in the chronic stage and elevated bladder pressure. Piezo1 is a type of mechanosensitive (MS) channel that directly responds to mechanical stimuli. To identify new targets for intervention in the treatment of BOO-induced fibrosis, this study investigated the impact of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) on Piezo1 activity and the progression of bladder fibrosis. METHODS: Immunofluorescence staining was conducted to assess the protein abundance of Piezo1 in fibroblasts from obstructed rat bladders. Bladder fibroblasts were cultured under normal atmospheric conditions (0 cmH2O) or exposed to HHP (50 cmH2O or 100 cmH2O). Agonists or inhibitors of Piezo1, YAP1, and ROCK1 were used to determine the underlying mechanism. RESULTS: The Piezo1 protein levels in fibroblasts from the obstructed bladder exhibited an elevation compared to the control group. HHP significantly promoted the expression of various pro-fibrotic factors and induced proliferation of fibroblasts. Additionally, the protein expression levels of Piezo1, YAP1, ROCK1 were elevated, and calcium influx was increased as the pressure increased. These effects were attenuated by the Piezo1 inhibitor Dooku1. The Piezo1 activator Yoda1 induced the expression of pro-fibrotic factors and the proliferation of fibroblasts, and elevated the protein levels of YAP1 and ROCK1 under normal atmospheric conditions in vitro. However, these effects could be partially inhibited by YAP1 or ROCK inhibitors. CONCLUSION: The study suggests that HHP may exacerbate bladder fibrosis through activating Piezo1.

High-aspect-ratio micro- and mesoscale metallic components (HAR-MMMCs) can play some unique roles in quite a few application fields, but their cost-efficient fabrication is significantly difficult to accomplish. To address this issue, this study proposes a necked-entrance through-mask (NTM) periodically lifting electroforming technology with an impinging jet electrolyte supply. The effects of the size of the necked entrance of the through-mask and the jet speed of the electrolyte on electrodeposition behaviors, including the thickness distribution of the growing top surface, deposition defect formation, geometrical accuracy, and electrodeposition rate, are investigated numerically and experimentally. Ensuring an appropriate size of the necked entrance can effectively improve the uniformity of deposition thickness, while higher electrolyte flow velocities help enhance the density of the components under higher current densities, reducing the formation of deposition defects. It was shown that several precision HAR-MMMCs with an AR of 3.65 and a surface roughness (Ra) of down to 36 nm can be achieved simultaneously with a relatively high deposition rate of 3.6 µm/min and thickness variation as low as 1.4%. Due to the high current density and excellent mass transfer effects in the electroforming conditions, the successful electroforming of components with a Vickers microhardness of up to 520.5 HV was achieved. Mesoscale precision columns with circular and Y-shaped cross-sections were fabricated by using this modified through-mask movable electroforming process. The proposed NTM periodic lifting electroforming method is promisingly advantageous in fabricating precision HAR-MMMCs cost-efficiently.

Invasive species may occupy quite different environments in their invaded areas to native ones, which may intensively interfere with predicting potential distribution through ecological niche modeling (ENM). Here, we take the tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), a tomato pest, as an example to investigate this topic. We analyzed niche expansion, stability, unfilling, and Schoener's D by principal component analysis (PCA) ordination method to examine its realized niche shifts and to explore how ENM approaches are affected by niche shifts. We used 5 datasets: Asian, African, European, South American, and global occurrence records in this study. Results showed that high niche unfilling for the species' invaded areas in Asia (20%), Africa (12%), and Europe (37%), possibly due to T. absoluta being in the early stages of invasion. High niche expansion was observed in Asia (38%) and Europe (19%), implying that some European and Asian populations had reached new climatic areas. African niche had the most niche stability (94%) and was equivalent to the native one in climate space (PCA ordination method), but the n-dimensional climate space framework showed that they were different. When projecting the native model to Asia and Europe, the native model performed poorly, implying that the niche shifts affected the transferability of the native model. ENM based on global data outperformed than other models, and our results suggested that T. absoluta has a large potential distribution in Asia, Mexico, South Europe, the United States, and Australia. Meanwhile, we recommend updating ENMs based on the species' invasion stage.

PURPOSE: To investigate the injury mechanism, diagnosis, and treatment of varus-posteromedial rotational instability of the elbow joint in children. METHODS: According to the diagnostic criteria of varus posteromedial rotational instability of elbow joint, 16 children with coronoid process fractures treated in our department from July 2013 to July 2017 were re-evaluated. There were 14 males and 2 females, aged 7 to 14 years, with an average age of 11.6 years. Eight cases on left and 8 cases on right side. An associated elbow dislocation occurred in 8 of 16 cases. Nine patients were treated with a lateral soft tissue repair only. In 7 other patients in addition to the lateral soft tissue repair, the coronoid process fractures were treated with open reduction and fixation. At the last clinical follow-up, each elbow joint range of motion was recorded, radiographs were obtained, and functional performance was evaluated by the Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS). RESULTS: The average follow-up time was 81.9 months for the 9 patients treated with lateral elbow soft tissue repair. At the last follow-up, 2 of the patients had MEPS scores as excellent, 1 was good, and 6 were rated as moderate or poor. Four patients had a cubitus varus deformity. The average follow-up time was 30.3 months for the 7 patients treated with both soft tissue repair and coronoid fracture stabilization. The elbow joint MEPS scores for each of these 7 patients was excellent at the last follow-up, and no complications such as cubitus varus occurred. CONCLUSION: The results of the study suggest that children could also develop elbow varus-posterior medial rotational instability injuries under the same mechanism. Although the morbidity rate is low, due to insufficient understanding of the injury mechanism, it is prone to missed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and delayed treatment, resulting in severe complications such as elbow instability, dislocation, traumatic arthritis, and elbow stiffness. On the contrary, according to the treatment principle of the posterior medial rotational instability of the elbow joint in adult, while the lateral repair is carried out, strong and effective reduction and fixation of the coronoid process fractures are adopted, it is expected that such children with rare elbow injuries can obtain excellent treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life of osteoporosis patients had caused widespread concern, due to high incidence and difficulty to cure. Scale specifics for osteoporosis and suitable for Chinese cultural background lacked. This study aimed to develop an osteoporosis scale in Quality of Life Instruments for Chronic Diseases system, namely QLICD-OS (V2.0). METHODS: Procedural decision-making approach of nominal group, focus group and modular approach were adopted. Our scale was developed based on experience of establishing scales at home and abroad. In this study, Quality of life measurements were performed on 127 osteoporosis patients before and after treatment to evaluate the psychometric properties. Validity was evaluated by qualitative analysis, item-domain correlation analysis, multi-scaling analysis and factor analysis; the SF-36 scale was used as criterion to carry out correlation analysis for criterion-related validity. The reliability was evaluated by the internal consistency coefficients Cronbach's α, test-retest reliability Pearson correlation r. Paired t-tests were performed on data of ​​the scale before and after treatment, with Standardized Response Mean (SRM) being calculated to evaluate the responsiveness. RESULTS: The QLICD-OS, composed of a general module (28 items) and an osteoporosis-specific module (14 items), had good content validity. Correlation analysis and factor analysis confirmed the construct, with the item having a strong correlation (most > 0.40) with its own domains/principle components, and a weak correlation (< 0.40) with other domains/principle components. Correlation coefficient between the similar domains of QLICD-OS and SF-36 showed reasonable criterion-related validity, with all coefficients r being greater than 0.40 exception of physical function of SF-36 and physical domain of QLICD-OS (0.24). Internal consistency reliability of QLICD-OS in all domains was greater than 0.7 except the specific module. The test-retest reliability coefficients (Pearson r) in all domains and overall score are higher than 0.80. Score changes after treatment were statistically significant, with SRM ranging from 0.35 to 0.79, indicating that QLICD-OS could be rated as medium responsiveness. CONCLUSION: As the first osteoporosis-specific quality of life scale developed by the modular approach in China, the QLICD-OS showed good reliability, validity and medium responsiveness, and could be used to measure quality of life in osteoporosis patients.
