RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Primary nasal tuberculosis (TB) is a rare form of extrapulmonary TB, particularly in patients receiving anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) immunotherapy. As a result, its diagnosis remains challenging. CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old male patient presented to the ear, nose, and throat department with right-sided nasal obstruction and bloody discharge for 1 month. He was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and received anti-TNF immunotherapy for 3 years prior to presentation. Biopsy findings revealed chronic granulomatous inflammation and a few acid-fast bacilli, suggestive of primary nasal TB. He was referred to our TB management department for treatment with oral anti-TB agents. After 9 months, the nasal lesions had disappeared. No recurrence was noted during follow-up. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of primary nasal TB should be considered in patients receiving TNF antagonists who exhibit thickening and crusting of the nasal septum mucosa or inferior turbinate, particularly when pathological findings suggest granulomatous inflammation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Galactosemia is an autosomal recessive disorder resulting from an enzyme defect in the galactose metabolic pathway. The most severe manifestation of classic galactosemia is caused by galactose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase (GALT) deficiency, and this condition can be fatal during infancy if left untreated. It also may result in long-term complications in affected individuals. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a patient whose initial clinical symptoms were jaundice and liver dysfunction. The patient's liver and coagulation functions did not improve after multiple admissions and treatment with antibiotics, hepatoprotective and choleretic agents and blood transfusion. Genetic analysis revealed the presence of two variants in the GALT gene in the compound heterozygous state: c.377 + 2dup and c.368G > C (p.Arg123Pro). Currently, the variant locus (c.377 + 2dup) in the GALT gene has not been reported in the Human Gene Mutation Database (HGMD), while c.368G > C (p.Arg123Pro) has not been reported in the Genome Aggregation Database (GnomAD) nor the HGMD in East Asian population. We postulated that the two variants may contribute to the development of classical galactosemia. CONCLUSIONS: Applications of whole-exome sequencing to detect the two variants can improve the detection and early diagnosis of classical galactosemia and, more specifically, may identify individuals who are compound heterozygous with variants in the GALT gene. Variants in the GALT gene have a potential therapeutic significance for classical galactosemia.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Though probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics have been shown to confer health benefits, their effects on cardiometabolic risk factors remain unclear. Therefore, we conducted an umbrella review to examine their effectiveness on anthropometric, cardiometabolic and inflammatory markers. METHODS: We conducted an umbrella review on eligible systematic reviews with meta-analysis (SRMA) published from journals' inception till 13 January 2023 retrieved from seven electronic databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, The Cochrane Library, and Web of Science). Methodological quality was appraised using the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR2) tool and certainty of evidence was graded into five classes. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed on outcome effect sizes at the SRMA and primary study levels. Extent of overlapping articles were evaluated using corrected cover area. RESULTS: 24 systematic reviews representing 265 unique studies, 1076 unique effect sizes and 25,973 subjects were included. Synbiotics were evidently more effective in improving weight (-1.91 kg, 95%CI -3.45 kg to -0.37 kg, p = 0.02), total cholesterol (-12.17 mg/dl, 95%CI -17.89 mg/dl to -6.46 mg/dl, p < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein (-12.26 mg/dl, 95%CI -18.27 mg/dl to -6.25 mg/dl, p < 0.01), waist circumference (-1.85 cm, 95%CI -2.77 cm to -0.94 cm, p < 0.01), and fasting plasma glucose (-9.68 mg/dl, 95%CI -16.18 mg/dl to -3.18 mg/dl, p < 0.01). Prebiotics were more effective in improving body mass index (-0.34 kg/m2, 95%CI -0.48 kg/m2 to -0.20 kg/m2, p < 0.01), and HOMA-IR (-0.92, 95%CI -1.91 to 0.07, p = 0.06). Probiotics were shown to be more effective in reducing diastolic blood pressure (-1.34 mmHg, 95%CI -2.14 mmHg to -0.55 mmHg, P < 0.01) improving insulin level change (-0.84 mIU/mL, 95%CI -1.27 mIU/mL to -0.41 mIU/mL, p < 0.01), and the percentage of body fat (-0.66%, 95%CI -0.70% to -0.61%, p < 0.01). For all outcomes, the credibility of evidence was classified as class IV. CONCLUSION: Pre-, pro-, and synbiotics can significantly enhance anthropometric indices, glucose and lipid profiles, blood pressure, and inflammatory markers in individuals confronting obesity. While suggesting their supplementation holds promise for this population, the true clinical impact hinges on tailoring these interventions to specific indications and customizing treatment strategies to align with individual patient needs.

RESUMEN

Optimizing thermoelectric conversion efficiency requires the compromise of electrical and thermal properties of materials, which are hard to simultaneously improve due to the strong coupling of carrier and phonon transport. Herein, a one-pot approach realizing simultaneous second phase and Cu vacancies modulation is proposed, which is effective in synergistically optimizing thermoelectric performance in copper sulfides. Multiple lattice defects, including nanoprecipitates, dislocations, and nanopores are produced by adding a refined ratio of Sn and Se. Phonon transport is significantly suppressed by multiple mechanisms. An ultralow lattice thermal conductivity is therefore obtained. Furthermore, extra Se is added in the copper sulfide for optimizing electrical transport properties by inducing generating Cu vacancies. Ultimately, an excellent figure of merit of ~1.6 at 873 K is realized in the Cu1.992SSe0.016(Cu2SnSe4)0.004 bulk sample. The simple strategy of inducing compositional and structural modulation for improving thermoelectric parameters promotes low-cost high-performance copper sulfides as alternatives in thermoelectric applications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Zinc Gluconate (ZG) is a safe and effective supplement for zinc. However, there is limited research on the optimal dosage for intravenous injection and the safety evaluation of animal models for ZG. This study aims to determine the safe dose range of ZG for intravenous injection in C57BL/6J mice. METHODS: A Dose titration experiment was conducted to determine the LD50 and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) of ZG in mice. Based on the LD50, four sub-lethal doses (SLD) of ZG were evaluated. Following three injections of each SLD and monitoring for seven days, serum zinc levels were measured, and pathological changes in the liver, kidney, and spleen tissues of mice were determined by histological staining. RESULTS: The dose titration experiment determined the LD50 of ZG in mice to be 39.6 mg/kg, with a 95%CI of 31.8-49.3 mg/kg. There was a statistically significant difference in the overall serum zinc levels (H = 36.912, P < 0.001) following SLD administration. Pairwise comparisons showed that the serum zinc levels of the 1/2 LD50 and 3/4 LD50 groups were significantly higher than those of the control group (P < 0.001); the serum zinc level of the 3/4 LD50 group was significantly higher than those of the 1/8 LD50 and 1/4 LD50 groups (P < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between the different SLDs of ZG and the serum zinc levels in mice (rs = 0.973, P < 0.001). H&E staining showed no significant histological abnormalities or lesions in the liver, kidney, and spleen tissues of mice in all experimental groups. CONCLUSION: The appropriate dose range of ZG for intravenous injection in C57BL/6J mice was clarified, providing a reference for future experimental research.

RESUMEN

The genus Passiflora, commonly known as passion fruit, originated in South America, is an economically important horticulture crop and widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics. Yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) and purple passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. edulis) are the two most planted species (Santos-Jiménez et al., 2022), which have been largely cultivated in southern China. The average annual production reaches 600,000 tons, of which yellow fruit accounts for more than 70% (Zhou et al., 2022). In 2022 to 2023, a disease caused flower rot severely in passion fruit plantations. The incidence rate was generally 10% in purple passion fruit, with an incidence up to 60% in yellow passion fruit 'Qinmi No. 9'. Flower rot occurs mainly in the rainy season, especially during periods of prolonged rain. Infected flowers had black patches that were water-soaked on the interior of the flower bud. The patches covered the entire flower bud, and fluffy mycelium and sporangia developed, which caused the flower bud rotten and abscised easily. Five symptomatic flowers from Wuhua, Guangdong (23°23'N, 115°18'E) and 8 symptomatic flowers from Shangsi, Guangxi (21°15'N, 107°98'E) of 'Qinmi No. 9' were collected during flowering period in 2022 and 2023. Diseased flower pieces were surface-sterilized with 70% ethanol for 2 to 3 min, rinsed with sterile distilled water 3 times, and placed on PDA medium at 25℃ in darkness. Four and 6 fungal isolates with similar morphology were isolated from the infected samples of Wuhua and Shangsi, respectively. Two isolates, PRFJ01 from Wuhua and PRGX02 from Shangsi, were randomly selected for further study. Purified fungal colonies at the age of 3 days accompany with diffuse cottony mycelia, turned white to gray later. The mycelia were hyaline and aseptate. Sporangiophores with 0.56 (0.22~1.10) mm in length and 6.1 (3.18~10.87) µm in width (n=100) were erect, light brown, and had rhizoids and stolons at their bases. Sporangia with 48.0 (23.45~92.85) µm in diameter (n=100) were dark-colored, near spherical and having dark ovoid sporangiospores with 3.56 (2.34~6.39) µm × 2.82 (1.73~4.70) µm (n=100). The morphology of the fungus were identical to Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb.) Vuill (Haque et al. 2023). The two isolates were molecularly identified using genomic regions of 28S large ribosomal subunit (LSU) with NL1 and LR3 primers (Cruz-Lachica et al., 2018). The phylogenetic trees revealed the sequences of PRFJ01 (OR801560.1) and PRGX02 (OR801561.1) were 100% and 99% identical to R. stolonifer (MK705761.1 and KC412868.1), respectively. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on healthy flowers and leaves of 5-month-old grafted 'Qinmi No. 9' plants. Mycelial plugs with 5-mm diameter were placed on the flowers and leaves. Three plants were performed for each of the isolates, and the test was repeated twice. The inoculated plants were moisturized with plastic bags. Healthy flowers and leaves inoculated with sterile PDA plugs were used as control. Typical symptoms were observed on inoculated plants after 2 days. The dark grey mycelia and sporangia covered the entire flower after 4 days inoculation. The flower bud became putrid and the flower stalk split off. Lesions on leaves expanded accompany with numerous aerial mycelium. However, the controls were symptomless. R. stolonifer was reisolated from inoculated tissues. Previously, flower rot on passion fruit caused by R. stolonifer has only been recorded in Brazil (Ploetz, 2003). To our knowledge, this is the first report of R. stolonifer causing flower rot on passion fruit in China.

RESUMEN

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), abnormal cardiac repolarization is associated with adverse cardiovascular events that can be measured via the QTc interval. We investigated the impact of obstructive sleep apnea on the change in repolarization after CABG and the association of change in repolarization with the occurrence of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events. METHODS: A total of 1,007 patients from 4 hospitals underwent an overnight sleep study prior to a nonemergent CABG. Electrocardiograms of 954 patients (median age: 62 years; male: 86%; mean follow-up: 2.1 years) were acquired prospectively within 48 hours before CABG (T1) and within 24 hours after CABG (T2). QTc intervals were measured using the BRAVO algorithm by Analyzing Medical Parameters for Solutions LLC. The change in T2 from T1 for QTc (ΔQTc) was derived, and Cox regression was performed. RESULTS: Compared with those without, patients who developed major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (n = 115) were older and had (1) a higher prevalence of smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease; (2) a higher apnea-hypopnea index and oxygen desaturation index; and (3) a smaller ΔQTc. Cox regression analysis demonstrated a smaller ΔQTc to be an independent risk factor for major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (hazard ratio: 0.997; P = .032). In the multivariable regression model, a higher oxygen desaturation index was independently associated with a smaller ΔQTc (correlation coefficient: -0.58; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: A higher preoperative oxygen desaturation index was an independent predictor of a smaller ΔQTc. ΔQTc within 24 hours after CABG could be a novel predictor of occurrence of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events at medium-term follow-up. RESUMEN

CONTEXT: Polyphenols are plant-based compounds with potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-obesogenic properties. However, their effects on health outcomes remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of polyphenols on anthropometric and cardiometabolic markers. DATA SOURCES: Six electronic databases-namely, EMBASE, CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, The Cochrane Library (reviews only), and Web of Science-were searched for relevant systematic reviews with meta-analyses (SRMAs). DATA EXTRACTION: Three reviewers performed the data extraction via a data-extraction Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. DATA ANALYSIS: An umbrella review and meta-analysis of existing SRMAs was conducted. Eighteen SRMAs published from 2015 to 2023, representing 445 primary studies and 838 unique effect sizes, were identified. Meta-analyses were conducted using random-effects models with general inverse variance. Polyphenol-containing foods were found to significantly improve weight (-0.36 kg; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.62, 0.77 kg; P < 0.01, I2 = 64.9%), body mass index (-0.25 kg/m2; 95% CI: -0.34, -0.17 kg/m2; P < 0.001, I2 = 82.4%), waist circumference (-0.74 cm; 95% CI: -1.34, -0.15 cm; P < 0.01, I2 = 99.3%), low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (-1.75 mg/dL; 95% CI: -2.56, -0.94; P < 0.001, I2 = 98.6%), total cholesterol (-1.23 mg/dL; 95% CI: -2.00, -0.46; P = 0.002, I2 = 94.6%), systolic blood pressure (-1.77 mmHg; 95% CI: -1.77, -0.93 mmHg; P < 0.001, I2 = 72.4%), diastolic blood pressure (-1.45 mmHg; 95% CI: -2.09, -0.80 mmHg; P < 0.001, I2 = 61.0%), fat percentage (-0.70%; 95% CI: -1.03, -0.36%; P < 0.001, I2 = 52.6%), fasting blood glucose (-0.18 mg/dL; 95% CI: -0.35, -0.01 mg/dL; P = 0.04, I2 = 62.0%), and C-reactive protein (CRP; including high-sensitivity-CRP [hs-CRP]) (-0.2972 mg/dL; 95% CI: -0.52, -0.08 mg/dL; P = 0.01, I2 = 87.9%). No significant changes were found for high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (-0.12 mg/dL; 95% CI: -1.44, 0.69; P = 0.67, I2 = 89.4%) and triglycerides (-1.29 mg/dL; 95% CI: -2.74, 0.16; P = 0.08, I2 = 85.4%). Between-study heterogeneity could be explained by polyphenol subclass differences. CONCLUSION: The findings of this umbrella review support the beneficial effects of polyphenols on anthropometric and metabolic markers, but discretion is warranted to determine the clinical significance of the magnitude of the biomarker improvements. RESUMEN

AIM: The objective of this study is to explore the impact and underlying mechanism of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi stem and leaf flavonoids (SSFs) on cognitive impairment caused by intracerebroventricular injection of okadaic acid (OA) in rats. METHODS: An experimental model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) was induced in rats by intracerebroventricular injection of OA, resulting in memory impairment. The Morris water maze test was employed to confirm the successful establishment of the memory impairment model. The rats that exhibited significant memory impairment were randomly divided into different groups, including a model group, three SSFs dose groups (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg), and a positive control group treated with Ginkgo biloba tablets (GLT) at a dose of 200 mg/kg. To evaluate the learning and memory abilities of the rats, the Morris water maze test was conducted. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was used to observe any morphological changes in neurons. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed to measure the expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) protein. Western blotting (WB) was utilized to assess the phosphorylation levels of tau protein at Ser262 and Ser396. The activities of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and constitutive nitric oxide synthase (cNOS) were quantified using ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The levels of inflammatory factors, including interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6), were measured using ELISA. RESULTS: In rats, the administration of OA via intracerebroventricular injection resulted in cognitive impairment, neuropathological changes, and alterations in protein expression and activity levels. Specifically, the protein expression of ChAT was significantly reduced (P<0.01), while the phosphorylation levels of tau protein at Ser262 and Ser396 were significantly increased (P<0.01). Moreover, iNOS activity in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex exhibited a significant increase (P<0.01), whereas cNOS activity showed a decrease (P<0.05). Furthermore, the levels of IL-1ß and TNF-α in the cerebral cortex were elevated (P<0.01), while the level of IL-6 was decreased (P<0.05). The administration of three doses of SSFs and GLT to rats exhibited varying degrees of improvement in the aforementioned pathological alterations induced by OA. CONCLUSION: SSFs demonstrated the ability to enhance cognitive function and mitigate memory deficits in rats following intracerebroventricular injection of OA. This beneficial effect may be attributed to the modulation of ChAT protein expression, tau hyperphosphorylation, NOS activity, and inflammatory cytokine levels by SSFs.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical effects of arthroscopically artificial ligament reconstruction with tensional remnant-repair in patients who are obese, and/or with demand for highly intensive sports, and/or with poor-quality ligament remnants. METHODS: A retrospective case series study was performed on patients treated by arthroscopically anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) reconstruction with tensional remnant repair technique from January 2019 to August 2021. General data, including demographics, surgical time, and postoperative adverse events, were recorded. The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society score (AOFAS), foot and ankle ability measure (FAAM), visual analog scale (VAS), and anterior talar translation were measured preoperatively and at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 2 years postoperatively. Ultrasonography examination was performed preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively to evaluate the ATFL. Data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0. F test was used to analyze the pre- and postoperative VAS, FAAM, and AOFAS scores. The significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: There were 20 males and 10 females among the patients with a mean age of (30.71 ± 5.81) years. The average surgical time was (40.21 ± 8.59) min. No adverse events were observed after surgery. At 2 years postoperatively, the anterior talar translation test showed grade 0 laxity in all patients. VAS score significantly decreased from preoperatively to 6 weeks, 3 months, and 2 years postoperatively (p < 0.001). Improvement of FAAM score and the AOFAS score from preoperatively to 6 weeks, 3 months, and 2 years postoperatively was statistically significant (p < 0.001). At 3 months postoperatively, most patients (23/30) could return to their pre-injured activities of daily living status. At 2 years postoperatively, all patients were able to return to their pre-injured activities of daily living status, and almost every patient (18/19) who expected highly intensive sports returned to sports with only 1 obese patient failing to achieve the goal. The ultrasonography examination at 2 years postoperatively showed that there was a linear band structure of soft tissue on the tension-rich fiber tape image from the fibular to the talar attachment sits of ATFL. CONCLUSION: The novel arthroscopically artificial ligament reconstruction with tensional remnant-repair technique for ATFL achieved satisfactory clinical outcomes in the short and medium term after operation, and allowed early return to pre-injured activities, which could be a reliable option for patients with chronic lateral ankle instability.

RESUMEN

Seed size and weight are important factors that influence soybean yield. Combining the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) of 45 soybean accessions and gene dynamic changes in seeds at seven developmental stages, we identified candidate genes that may control the seed size/weight. Among these, a PLATZ-type regulator overlapping with 10 seed weight QTLs was further investigated. This zinc-finger transcriptional regulator, named as GmPLATZ, is required for the promotion of seed size and weight in soybean. The GmPLATZ may exert its functions through direct binding to the promoters and activation of the expression of cyclin genes and GmGA20OX for cell proliferation. Overexpression of the GmGA20OX enhanced seed size/weight in soybean. We further found that the GmPLATZ binds to a 32-bp sequence containing a core palindromic element AATGCGCATT. Spacing of the flanking sequences beyond the core element facilitated GmPLATZ binding. An elite haplotype Hap3 was also identified to have higher promoter activity and correlated with higher gene expression and higher seed weight. Orthologues of the GmPLATZ from rice and Arabidopsis play similar roles in seeds. Our study reveals a novel module of GmPLATZ-GmGA20OX/cyclins in regulating seed size and weight and provides valuable targets for breeding of crops with desirable agronomic traits.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: International guidelines recommend cold snare polypectomy (CSP) for polyps < 10 mm in size. However, recent randomized clinical trials (RCTs) showed conflicting results for the use of cold forceps polypectomy (CFP) vs. CSP for the resection of diminutive colorectal polyps (DCPs) (≤ 5 mm), especially for polyps ≤ 3 mm. Herein we compared CFP with CSP for patients with DCPs in this meta-analysis of RCTs. METHODS: We systematically searched the Cochrane Library, PubMed and EMBASE databases from inception to November 24, 2022, (Registration number INPLASY2022110135). The primary endpoint was DCP complete resection rate. The secondary endpoints were mean polypectomy time, polyp retrieval rate and complications. RESULTS: Seven RCTs involving 1023 DCPs were included. The complete resection rate (91.6% vs. 94.7%) for CFP was not significantly lower for polyps ≤ 5 mm (relative risk [RR] = 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.98-1.07). Sub-group analysis showed that the complete resection rate (88.7% vs. 92.4%) for CFP was not significantly lower for DCPs > 3 mm (RR = 1.04; 95% CI: 0.97-1.12). Another sub-group analysis showed that the complete resection rate (97.0% vs. 96.3%) was similar for polyps ≤ 3 mm for CFP vs. CSP (RR = 1.00; 95% CI: 0.98-1.03). The mean polypectomy time was not different between CFP and CSP (95% CI: -11.86-10.18). The polyp retrieval rate (100% vs. 96.9%) was not significantly higher for CFP (RR = 1.02; 95% CI: 0.98-1.07). There were no reported complications in the included studies. The overall study quality was moderate except for the removal of polyps ≤ 5 mm (low-quality evidence). CONCLUSION: CFP was comparable to CSP for the resection of polyps ≤ 3 mm; however, caution should be taken for DCPs > 3 mm because of the low complete resection rate (< 90%).

RESUMEN

Seed weight is usually associated with seed size and is one of the important agronomic traits that determine yield. Understanding of seed weight control is limited, especially in soybean plants. Here we show that Glycine max JASMONATE-ZIM DOMAIN 3 (GmJAZ3), a gene identified through gene co-expression network analysis, regulates seed-related traits in soybean. Overexpression of GmJAZ3 promotes seed size/weight and other organ sizes in stable transgenic soybean plants likely by increasing cell proliferation. GmJAZ3 interacted with both G. max RESPONSE REGULATOR 18a (GmRR18a) and GmMYC2a to inhibit their transcriptional activation of cytokinin oxidase gene G. max CYTOKININ OXIDASE 3-4 (GmCKX3-4), which usually affects seed traits. Meanwhile, the GmRR18a binds to the promoter of GmMYC2a and activates GmMYC2a gene expression. In GmJAZ3-overexpressing soybean seeds, the protein contents were increased while the fatty acid contents were reduced compared to those in the control seeds, indicating that the GmJAZ3 affects seed size/weight and compositions. Natural variation in JAZ3 promoter region was further analyzed and Hap3 promoter correlates with higher promoter activity, higher gene expression and higher seed weight. The Hap3 promoter may be selected and fixed during soybean domestication. JAZ3 orthologs from other plants/crops may also control seed size and weight. Taken together, our study reveals a novel molecular module GmJAZ3-GmRR18a/GmMYC2a-GmCKXs for seed size and weight control, providing promising targets during soybean molecular breeding for better seed traits.

RESUMEN

Resistance training is employed for pursuing muscle strength characterized by activation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-mediated hypertrophic signaling for protein production. Endurance training elevates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) signaling of mitochondrial adaptations for oxidative phosphorylation. Now, emerging evidence suggests that, like endurance training, resistance training also elicits profound effects on mitochondrial adaptations in skeletal muscle, which means that resistance training yields both strength and endurance phenotypes in myofibers, which has treatment value for the muscle loss and poor aerobic capacity in humans. Our review outlines a brief overview of muscle hypertrophic signals with resistance training, and focuses on the effects of resistance training on mitochondrial biogenesis and respiration in skeletal muscle. This study provides novel insights into the therapeutic strategy of resistance training for the metabolically dysfunctional individuals with declined mitochondrial function.

RESUMEN

Abiotic stress is one of the most important factors reducing soybean yield. It is essential to identify regulatory factors contributing to stress responses. A previous study found that the tandem CCCH zinc-finger protein GmZF351 is an oil level regulator. In this study, we discovered that the GmZF351 gene is induced by stress and that the overexpression of GmZF351 confers stress tolerance to transgenic soybean. GmZF351 directly regulates the expression of GmCIPK9 and GmSnRK, leading to stomata closing, by binding to their promoter regions, which carry two CT(G/C)(T/A)AA elements. Stress induction of GmZF351 is mediated through reduction in the H3K27me3 level at the GmZF351 locus. Two JMJ30-demethylase-like genes, GmJMJ30-1 and GmJMJ30-2, are involved in this demethylation process. Overexpression of GmJMJ30-1/2 in transgenic hairy roots enhances GmZF351 expression mediated by histone demethylation and confers stress tolerance to soybean. Yield-related agronomic traits were evaluated in stable GmZF351-transgenic plants under mild drought stress conditions. Our study reveals a new mode of GmJMJ30-GmZF351 action in stress tolerance, in addition to that of GmZF351 in oil accumulation. Manipulation of the components in this pathway is expected to improve soybean traits and adaptation under unfavorable environments.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mediating effect of coping style between illness perception and fear of cancer recurrence in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was carried out in 254 eligible patients who underwent radical prostatectomy in the urology department of two comprehensive tertiary hospitals in Wenzhou City from June 2022 to December 2022. The questionnaires include the general data questionnaire, brief illness perception questionnaire (BIPQ), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) and Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FoP-Q-SF). A structural equation model was used to analyze the mediating effect of coping style between illness perception and fear of cancer recurrence. RESULTS: The score of fear of cancer recurrence in prostate cancer patients is (30.08 ± 10.11). Illness perception, avoidance, and surrender coping styles could forward prediction fear of cancer recurrence (P=0.001, P=0.019, P=0.001); facing coping styles can negatively predict fear of cancer recurrence (P=0.001). Coping style played a part of the mediating role between illness perception and fear of cancer recurrence, and the mediating effect is 0.150,which accounted for 47.62% of the total effect. CONCLUSION: Coping style is a mediator between illness perception and fear of cancer recurrence in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy. Doctors and nurses should reduce patients' negative perception, guide them to adopt positive coping strategies, and thereby reduce their fear of cancer recurrence.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE@#To investigate the clinical effects of arthroscopically artificial ligament reconstruction with tensional remnant-repair in patients who are obese, and/or with demand for highly intensive sports, and/or with poor-quality ligament remnants.@*METHODS@#A retrospective case series study was performed on patients treated by arthroscopically anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) reconstruction with tensional remnant repair technique from January 2019 to August 2021. The significance was set at p < 0.05.@*RESULTS@#There were 20 males and 10 females among the patients with a mean age of (30.71 ± 5.81) years. The ultrasonography examination at 2 years postoperatively showed that there was a linear band structure of soft tissue on the tension-rich fiber tape image from the fibular to the talar attachment sits of ATFL.@*CONCLUSION@#The novel arthroscopically artificial ligament reconstruction with tensional remnant-repair technique for ATFL achieved satisfactory clinical outcomes in the short and medium term after operation, and allowed early return to pre-injured activities, which could be a reliable option for patients with chronic lateral ankle instability.

RESUMEN

Objective:To explore the mechanism of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) regulating pulmonary vascular remodeling in pulmonary hypertension (PH).Methods:Pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC) groups: control group, PH group, PH+BMP-2 group, PH+BMP-2+ small interfering BMP receptor(si-BMPR)-Ⅰa group, PH+BMP-2+ si-BMPR-Ⅰb group, PH+BMP -2+si-BMPR-Ⅱ group. In vitro PH model was induced by hypoxia. The three BMP-2 receptors were silenced by the transfection of si-BMPR-Ⅰa, si-BMPR-Ⅰb and si-BMPR-Ⅱ plasmids, respectively. Cell proliferation and apoptosis in each group were detected, transient receptor potential ion channel C1/6 (TRPC1/6), p21 mRNA and protein levels, and intracellular Ca 2+ concentration were detected. Results:The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration in the PH group was higher than that in the control group: (785.15 ± 44.26) nmol/L vs. (224.15 ± 15.87) nmol/L, the and apoptosis rate was lower than that in the control group: (3.15 ± 0.22)% vs. (7.31 ± 0.45)%, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration in the PH+BMP-2 group was (297.64 ± 21.46) nmol/L, and was lower than that in the PH group, and apoptosis rate was (6.88 ± 0.75)%, and was higher than that in the PH group, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration in the PH+BMP-2+si-BMPR-Ⅰa group, PH+BMP-2+ si-BMPR-Ⅰb group, PH+BMP -2+si-BMPR-Ⅱ group was (412.31 ± 29.57), (384.34 ± 30.66), (695.23 ± 39.85) nmol/L, and was higher than that in the PH+BMP-2 group, and apoptosis rate was (4.10 ± 0.27)%, (4.26 ± 0.28)%, (3.33 ± 0.24)%, and was lower than that in the PH+BMP-2 group, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration in the PH+BMP -2+si-BMPR-Ⅱ group was higher than that in the PH+BMP-2+si-BMPR-Ⅰa group and PH+BMP-2+ si-BMPR-Ⅰb group, the apoptosis rate was lower than that in the PH+BMP-2+si-BMPR-Ⅰa group and PH+BMP-2+ si-BMPR-Ⅰb group, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). Conclusions:BMP-2 mainly inhibits the expression of TRPC1/6 by interacting with the receptor BMPR-Ⅱ, inhibits the influx of Ca 2+ and promotes the expression of p21, thereby inhibiting the proliferation of PASMC and promoting apoptosis, participating in pulmonary vascular remodeling in PH.

RESUMEN

ObjectiveTo investigate the condom use of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Shanghai, the information motivation behavioral skills model (IMB) theory was used to introduce psychosocial factors and study the relevant factors of consistent condom use (CCU) in this population. MethodsA cross-sectional study of 547 MSM in four districts of Shanghai was conducted by snowball sampling. The structural equation model based on psychosocial optimization was constructed and validated using the data collected by structured questionnaires. ResultsAmong the 547 respondents, the proportion of CCU in the past six months was 45.5%. Comparing the fitness of the initial model with that of the adjusted model, we found that the fitness of the adjusted model was good. ConclusionThe proportion of CCU among MSM in Shanghai is relatively low; In addition, information and motivation do not directly affect the CCU of this population; Only behavioral skills have a direct effect on CCU. Finally, social psychological measures should be emphasized for this population, and comprehensive and multi-level strategies should be formulated to control the spread of HIV in this population.
