RESUMEN

The results of video head impulse tests (video-HITs) may be confounded by data artifacts of various origins, including pupil size and eyelid obstruction of the pupil. This study aimed to determine the effect of these factors on the results of video-HITs. We simulated ptosis by adopting pharmacological dilatation of the pupil in 21 healthy participants (11 women; age 24-58 years). Each participant underwent video-HITs before and after pupillary dilatation using 0.5% tropicamide. We assessed the changes in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain, corrective saccade amplitude, and frequency of eyelid flicks. After pupillary dilatation, the VOR gain decreased for both right (RAC; 1.12 [Formula: see text] 0.12 vs. 1.01 [Formula: see text] 0.16, p = 0.011) and left anterior canals (LACs; 1.15 [Formula: see text] 0.13 vs. 0.96 [Formula: see text] 0.14, p < 0.001), and right posterior canal (RPC, 1.10 [Formula: see text] 0.13 vs. 0.98 [Formula: see text] 0.09, p = 0.001). The corrective saccade amplitudes also decreased significantly for all four vertical canals. The frequency of eyelid flicks, however, did not change. The changes of VOR gain were positively correlated with the lid excursion in RPC (r = 0.629, p = 0.002) and LPC (r = 0.549, p = 0.010). Our study indicates that eyelid position and pupil size should be considered when interpreting the results of video-HITs, especially for the vertical canals. Pupils should be shrunk in a very well-lit room, and artifacts should be prevented by taping or lifting the eyelids as required during video-HITs.

RESUMEN

We report details on the quenching incident of an 18 T high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet, which occurred in December 2020. It has been received that the no-insulation (NI) design of an HTS magnet is relatively safe in quenching. However, the NI design could not completely prevent the magnet from quenching and damaging the associated system. Due to significant vibrations and fast energy dissipation during quenching, the magnet and the detector components are seriously damaged. The manufacturer inspected the magnet after the incident and repaired it in the spring of 2021. The magnet showed stable and consistent performance after the repair. It is evident that the NI-HTS magnet still requires quench protection circuits to secure the magnet and associated system.

A clinical scale fully dedicated to evaluating ocular motor abnormalities is required for now. We investigated the utility of a recently developed Scale for Ocular motor Disorders in Ataxia (SODA) in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA). We prospectively assessed SODA in consecutive patients with MSA between August 2021 and August 2023 at the Korea University Medical Center. The results of the clinical exam-based SODA were compared with those measured using video-oculography (VOG-guided SODA). We also compared the findings with other established clinical scales targeting patients with MSA, including the Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS) I-II, Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor part (UPDRS-III), Scale for Assessment of Rating of Ataxia (SARA), Composite Autonomic Symptom Score-31 (COMPASS-31), and Composite Autonomic Severity Score (CASS). Twenty patients were enrolled in our study (17 with cerebellar-type MSA and three with Parkinson-type MSA). Scores ranged from 1 to 14 (median [interquartile range (IQR)] = 8 [5-10]). Among the subscales, saccades had a median score of 2.5 (IQR = 1-3), followed by ocular pursuit (1 [0-1]), nystagmus (1 [0-2]), saccadic intrusions (1 [0-1]), vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) (0.5 [0-1]), ocular alignment (0 [0-1]), and VOR cancellation (1 [0-1]). The clinical-exam-based SODA (p = 0.020) and VOG-guided SODA (p = 0.034) positively correlated with disease duration. No correlation was found between clinical exam-based SODA and other scales. Skew deviation, gaze-evoked nystagmus, VOR cancellation, and smooth pursuit had the highest precision among the items. Ocular misalignment and spontaneous and positional nystagmus were frequently false positive and were poorly detected with clinical exam-based SODA. Six patients with repeated evaluation exhibited higher scores, along with deterioration documented on other clinical scales. The SODA can reliably predict neurodegeneration as an additional clinical surrogate in MSA.

We report an extended search for the axion dark matter using the CAPP18T haloscope. The CAPP18T experiment adopts innovative technologies of a high-temperature superconducting magnet and a Josephson parametric converter. The CAPP18T detector was reconstructed after an unexpected incident of the high-temperature superconducting magnet quenching. The system reconstruction includes rebuilding the magnet, improving the impedance matching in the microwave chain, and mechanically readjusting the tuning rod to the cavity for improved thermal contact. The total system noise temperature is ∼0.6 K. The coupling between the cavity and the strong antenna is maintained at ß≃2 to enhance the axion search scanning speed. The scan frequency range is from 4.8077 to 4.8181 GHz. No significant indication of the axion dark matter signature is observed. The results set the best upper bound of the axion-photon-photon coupling (g_{aγγ}) in the mass ranges of 19.883 to 19.926 µeV at ∼0.7×|g_{aγγ}^{KSVZ}| or ∼1.9×|g_{aγγ}^{DFSZ}| with 90% confidence level. The results demonstrate that a reliable search of the high-mass dark matter axions can be achieved beyond the benchmark models using the technology adopted in CAPP18T.

We report the first search results for axion dark matter using an 18 T high-temperature superconducting magnet haloscope. The scan frequency ranges from 4.7789 to 4.8094 GHz. No significant signal consistent with the Galactic halo dark matter axion is observed. The results set the best upper bound of axion-photon-photon coupling (g_{aγγ}) in the mass ranges of 19.764 to 19.771 µeV (19.863 to 19.890 µeV) at 1.5×|g_{aγγ}^{KSVZ}| (1.7×|g_{aγγ}^{KSVZ}|), and 19.772 to 19.863 µeV at 2.7×|g_{aγγ}^{KSVZ}| with 90% confidence level, respectively. This remarkable sensitivity in the high mass region of dark matter axion is achieved by using the strongest magnetic field among the existing haloscope experiments and realizing a low-noise amplification of microwave signals using a Josephson parametric converter.

Primary amines form a key component of a well-studied mechanism for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. This study comprises a single-step synthesis of a novel sorbent for CO2 by grafting monomers rich in primary amines to three commercial-grade fabrics: polyethylene terephthalate, high-density polyethylene and nylon 6. An initial evaluation of the sorbency of the chosen monomers, allylamine and butenylamine, qualitatively confirmed their ability to extract CO2 from the atmosphere. Six novel copolymers, comprised of each of the three fabrics grafted with one of each monomer, were synthesized using radiation-induced graft copolymerization through electron beam irradiation. All fabrics achieved greater grafting with butenylamine compared to allylamine, likely given the closer proximity of the primary amine to the radical on the latter's structure. Primary amines can stabilize radicals, preventing copolymerization reactions. Characterization of sorbency revealed that the majority of the grafted amines likely reacted to adsorb CO2. Therefore, the amount of amine grafted comprises the primary limiting factor on the sorbents' CO2 capacity.
