RESUMEN

Reducing the dietary CP concentration in the formulation of low-protein diets without adverse effects on animal growth performance and meat quality remains challenging. In this study, we investigated the effects of nicotinamide (NAM) on the nitrogen excretion, growth performance, and meat quality of growing-finishing pigs fed low-protein diets. To measure the nitrogen balance, we conducted two trials: in nitrogen balance trial 1, four crossbred (Duroc × Landrace × Large White) barrows (40 ± 0.5 kg BW) were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with four diets and periods. The diets consisted of a basal diet + 30 mg/kg NAM (a control dose), basal diet + 90 mg/kg NAM, basal diet + 210 mg/kg NAM, and basal diet + 360 mg/kg NAM. In nitrogen balance trial 2, another four barrows (40 ± 0.5 kg BW) were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. The diets consisted of a basal diet + including 30 mg/kg NAM (control), basal diet + 360 mg/kg NAM, low-protein diet + 30 mg/kg NAM, and low-protein diet + 360 mg/kg NAM. To measure growth performance, two trials were conducted. In growth performance trial 1, 40 barrows (37.0 ± 1.0 kg) were randomly allocated to one of four dietary treatments (n = 10 per group), whereas in growth performance trial 2, 300 barrows (41.4 ± 2.0 kg) were randomly allocated to one of four dietary treatments, with each dietary treatment conducted in five repetitions with 15 pigs each. The four diets in the two growth performance trials were similar to those in nitrogen balance trial 2. Supplementing the diet with 210 or 360 mg/kg NAM reduced urinary nitrogen excretion and total nitrogen excretion and increased nitrogen retention comparted with the control diet (P < 0.05). Compared with the control diet, the low-protein diet with 360 mg/kg NAM reduced faecal, urinary, and total nitrogen excretion (P < 0.05) without affecting nitrogen retention and average daily gain (P > 0.05). Pigs fed the low-protein diet with 360 mg/kg NAM showed a decreased intramuscular fat content in the longissimus thoracis muscle when compared with pigs fed the control diet (P > 0.05). Our results suggest NAM as a suitable dietary additive to reduce dietary CP concentration, maximise nitrogen retention and growth performance, and decrease fat deposition in pigs.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate the process of obtaining memristive multi-states Hall resistance (RH) change in a single Hall cross (SHC) structure. Otherwise, the working mechanism successfully mimics the behavior of biological neural systems. The motion of domain wall (DW) in the SHC was used to control the ascend (or descend) of the RH amplitude. The primary synaptic functions such as long-term potentiation (LTP), long-term depression (LTD), and spike-time-dependent plasticity (STDP) could then be emulated by regulating RH. Applied programmable magnetic field pulses are in varying conditions such as intensity and duration to adjust RH. These results show that analog readings of DW movement can be closely resembled with the change of synaptic weight and have great potentials for bioinspired neuromorphic computing.

RESUMEN

The dynamics of magnetic domain wall (DW) in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy Pt/[CoSiB/Pt]N nanowires was studied by measuring the DW velocity under a magnetic field (H) and an electric current (J) in two extreme regimes of DW creep and flow. Two important findings are addressed. One is that the field-driven DW velocity increases with increasing N in the flow regime, whereas the trend is inverted in the creep regime. The other is that the sign of spin current-induced effective field is gradually reversed with increasing N in both DW creep and flow regimes. To reveal the underlying mechanism of new findings, we performed further experiment and micromagnetic simulation, from which we found that the observed phenomena can be explained by the combined effect of the DW anisotropy, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, spin-Hall effect, and spin-transfer torques. Our results shed light on the mechanism of DW dynamics in novel amorphous PMA nanowires, so that this work may open a path to utilize the amorphous PMA in emerging DW-based spintronic devices.

RESUMEN

During ordering process of face centered tegragonal (fct) L1(0) phase of the FePt alloy, there exist three growth variants of axes (001) from original disordered fcc structured phase. When FePt film was directly deposited on the MgO (001) substrate, the variant perpendicular to the film plane grew, resulting in a low out-of-plane coercivity of 1.3 kOe. By using Cu underlayer, two variants lying in the film plane got same chance to grow, which caused an in-plane perpendicular alignment of the tetragonal axes of FePt L1(0) phases. The crystallographic relationship between Cu and FePt layers is Cu (100)<100>//fct FePt (100)<100>. A high in-plane coercivity of 4.6 kOe was obtained due to the high density of micro-defects (mcro-twins, anti-phase boundaries, etc.) in the film plane. This work demonstrated a way of selecting the growth variants of ordering process to adjust the magnetic properties of the ordered FePt thin films.

RESUMEN

The superconducting critical temperature (T(c)) of ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet systems has been predicted to exhibit a dependence on the magnetization orientation of the ferromagnetic layers such that T(AP)(c)>T(P)(c) for parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) configurations of the two ferromagnetic layers. We have grown CuNi/Nb/CuNi films via magnetron sputtering and confirmed the theoretical prediction by measuring the resistance of the system as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We find an approximately 25% resistance drop occurs near T(c) in Cu0.47Ni0.53(5 nm)/Nb(18)/CuNi(5) when the two CuNi layers change their magnetization directions from parallel to antiparallel, whereas there is no corresponding resistance change in the normal state.

RESUMEN

Pituitary function and structure were assessed in 69 endemic cretins from western China. In hypothyroid cretins (TSH greater than 10 mIU/l), CT imaging of the pituitary revealed adenoma in five of 20 (25%) and partially empty sella (PES) in a further eight of 20 (40%). The majority of tumours were microadenomas and showed a relation with higher levels of serum TSH but not with duration of hypothyroidism. Dynamic pituitary testing with TRH and GnRH in four patients with adenoma on CT gave a flat TSH response but significant rises in serum PRL, GH, LH and FSH concentrations. Hyperprolactinaemia (greater than 350 mIU/l) was present in hypothyroid cretins only (13 of 26; 50%) and serum PRL showed a curvilinear relation with serum TSH levels (r = 0.7, P less than 0.0001). Hypogonadism was seen in approximately half the cretins with high PRL levels. Our data suggest that severe protracted thyroid hormone deficiency may result in thyrotrophin adenomas of the pituitary gland. Disturbances of growth, puberty, and sexual function in endemic cretins are explained by the secondary effects of thyroid hormone deficiency on pituitary function.

RESUMEN

Endemic cretinism occurs in areas of severe iodine deficiency and is manifested by two major clinical patterns, myxedematous and neurological. The relationship between these types and the factors responsible for the clinical variability are not clear. We examined 69 endemic cretins, aged 4-52 yr, categorized clinically at the beginning of the study into the three traditional types of endemic cretins, myxedematous (n = 25), neurological (n = 15), and the mixed form (n = 29), from a previously unreported endemia in Qinghai Province, China. These patients underwent detailed endocrine and neurological examination, including intelligence assessment using the Hiskey-Nebraska Test of Learning Aptitude or the Griffiths Mental Development Scales, audiometry (in a subset of 37 patients); thyroid function testing and thyroid ultrasonography; and radiology of the skull, hand, and hip. We found that categorization of the cretins into the conventional types did not reflect the pathophysiology of the condition, since an identical pattern and intensity of neurological, intellectual, and audiometric deficits were common to and equally present in all three types of endemic cretins regardless of their thyroid function. Gait disorder (in 99%) and pyramidal signs such as patellar hyper-reflexia (in 91%) were the most common neurological abnormalities. There was no difference in mean intelligence test scores among the three groups [overall mean intelligence score (Hiskey or Griffiths tests), 28.8 +/- 12.8 (SD)]. The differing clinical manifestations of cretinism could be explained by the length and severity of thyroid hormone deficiency. Myxedematous cretins were severely thyroid hormone deficient, and as a result sexually immature, dwarfed, and had retarded skeletal maturity. They had clinical and sonographic thyroid atrophy, rather than goiter. Although neurological cretins were euthyroid, linear growth arrest lines (demonstrated radiologically) in the long bones of these cretins suggested previous hypothyroidism. Furthermore, all cretins were growth retarded when compared with peers of similar age and race. Our data therefore suggest that the different clinical types of endemic cretinism are in fact the same disorder phenotypically modified by the length and severity of postnatal hypothyroidism. The neurological manifestations are interpreted as reflecting the effects of maternal and fetal hypothyroxinemia, secondary to severe iodine deficiency, on the developing nervous system.
