RESUMEN

To assess the impact of low-dose contrast media (CM) injection protocol with deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithm on image quality in coronary CT angiography (CCTA). In this prospective study, patients underwent CCTA were prospectively and randomly assigned to three groups with different contrast volume protocols (at 320mgI/mL concentration and constant flow rate of 5ml/s). After pairing basic information, 210 patients were enrolled in this study: Group A, 0.7mL/kg (n = 70); Group B, 0.6mL/kg (n = 70); Group C, 0.5mL/kg (n = 70). All patients were examined via a prospective ECG-triggered scan protocol within one heartbeat. A high level DLIR (DLIR-H) algorithm was used for image reconstruction with a thickness and interval of 0.625mm. The CT values of ascending aorta (AA), descending aorta (DA), three main coronary arteries, pulmonary artery (PA), and superior vena cava (SVC) were measured and analyzed for objective assessment. Two radiologists assessed the image quality and diagnostic confidence using a 5-point Likert scale. The CM doses were 46.81 ± 6.41mL, 41.96 ± 7.51mL and 34.65 ± 5.38mL for Group A, B and C, respectively. The objective assessments on AA, DA and the three main coronary arteries and the overall subjective scoring showed no significant difference among the three groups (all p > 0.05). The subjective assessment proved that excellent CCTA images can be obtained from the three different contrast media protocols. There were no significant differences in intracoronary attenuation values between the higher HR subgroup and the lower HR subgroup among three groups. CCTA reconstructed with DLIR could be realized with adequate enhancement in coronary arteries, excellent image quality and diagnostic confidence at low contrast dose of a 0.5mL/kg. The use of lower tube voltages may further reduce the contrast dose requirement.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to investigate the feasibility of using dual-source computed tomography (CT) combined with low flow rate and low tube voltage for postchemotherapy image assessment in cancer patients. METHODS: Ninety patients undergoing contrast-enhanced CT scans of the upper abdomen were prospectively enrolled and randomly assigned to groups A, B, and C (n = 30 each). In group A, patients underwent scans at 120 kVp with 448 mgI/kg. Patients in group B underwent scans at 100 kVp with 336 mgI/kg. Patient in group C underwent scans at 70 kVp with of 224 mgI/kg. Quantitative measurements including the CT number, standard deviation of CT number, signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise ratio, subjective reader scores, and the volume and flow rate of contrast agent were evaluated for each group. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in the subjective image scores within the three groups except for the kidney (all P > 0.05). Group C showed significantly higher CT values, lower noise levels, and higher signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio values in the majority of the regions of interest compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). In group C, the contrast agent dose was decreased by 46% compared to group A (79.48 ± 12.24 vs 42.7 ± 8.6, P < 0.01), and the contrast agent injection rate was reduced by 22% (2.7 ± 0.41 vs 2.1 ± 0.4, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The use of 70 kVp tube voltage combined with low iodine flow rates prove to be a more effective approach in solving the challenge of compromised blood vessels in postchemotherapy tumor patients, without reducing image quality and diagnostic confidence.

PURPOSE: To compare the contrast media opacification of head and neck CT angiography (CTA) between conventional fixed trigger delay and individualized post-trigger delay (PTD). METHODS: In this prospective study (April-October 2022), 196 consecutive participants were randomly divided into two groups to perform head and neck CTA in bolus tracking with either an individualized PTD (Group A) or a fixed 4-second PTD (Group B). All CT and contrast media protocol parameters were consistent between the two groups. One reader evaluated objective image quality, while two readers rated subjective image quality. Objective image quality was compared between groups via two-sample t-test, while the subjective ratings were compared with chi-square analysis. RESULTS: Participants' clinical information including sex, age, weight, body weight index (BMI), and heart rate were not statistically different between two groups (all p > 0.05). Individualized PTD ranging from 3.5 to 7.9 s (average 5.6 s), which is shorter than fixed delays (p < 0.05). Both readers rated better subjective image quality for the Group A (p < 0.05). The mean vessel enhancement was significantly higher in Group A in all vessels (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the fixed post-trigger delay in bolus tracking technique, individualized post-trigger delay could achieve reliable scan timing, optimize vessel opacification and obtain better image quality for head and neck CT angiography.

OBJECTIVES: To validate the peak enhancement timing of a patient-specific post-trigger delay (PTD) in Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) and compare its image quality against a fixed PTD. METHODS: In this prospective study, 204 consecutive participants were randomly divided into two groups to perform CCTA in bolus tracking with either a fixed 5-second PTD (Group A) or a patient-specific PTD (Group B). Test bolus was also performed in Group B to determine the reference peak enhancement timing. One reader evaluated objective image quality, while two readers rated subjective image quality. The predicted PTD was validated through correlation and agreement analysis with the reference measurement. Objective image quality was compared between groups via two-sample t-test and linear regression, while the subjective ratings were compared with chi-square analysis. RESULTS: The two groups each had 102 participants with comparable characteristics (52.9 ± 11.3 versus 52.1 ± 11.3 years of age, and 53 versus 52 males). The scan timing from patient-specific PTD demonstrated strong correlation (R = 0.77) and consistency (ICC = 0.618) with the reference peak timing. Both readers rated better subjective image quality for the Group B (p < 0.001). The mean vessel enhancement was significantly higher in Group B in all coronary vessels (all p < 0.05). After adjusting for the participant variation, the patient-specific PTD strategy was associated with an average of 33.5 HU higher enhancement compared to the fixed PTD. CONCLUSIONS: Patient-specific delay could achieve reliable scan timing, optimize vessel opacification and obtain better image quality in CCTA.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by cognitive impairments, is considered to be one of the most widespread chronic neurodegenerative diseases worldwide. We recently introduced a novel therapeutic agent for AD treatment, the T-type calcium channel enhancer ethyl-8-methyl-2,4-dioxo-2-(piperidin-1-yl)-2H-spiro[cyclopentane-1,3-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin]-2-ene-3-carboxylate (SAK3). SAK3 enhances calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II and proteasome activity, thereby promoting amyloid beta degradation in mice with AD. However, the antioxidative effects of SAK3 remain unclear. We investigated the antioxidative effects of SAK3 in olfactory bulbectomized mice (OBX mice), compared with the effects of donepezil as a positive control. As previously reported, single oral administration of both SAK3 (0.5 mg/kg, p.o.) and donepezil (1.0 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly improved cognitive and depressive behaviors in OBX mice. Single oral SAK3 administration markedly reduced 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal and nitrotyrosine protein levels in the hippocampus of OBX mice, which persisted until 1 week after administration. These effects are similar to those observed with donepezil therapy. Increased protein levels of oxidative stress markers were observed in the microglial cells, which were significantly rescued by SAK3 and donepezil. SAK3 could ameliorate oxidative stress in OBX mice, like donepezil, suggesting that the antioxidative effects of SAK3 and donepezil are among the neuroprotective mechanisms in AD pathogenesis.

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) and human parvovirus 4 (PARV4) are known to infect humans and transmit through contaminated blood and blood products. Globally, three genotypes of B19V, as well as PARV4, have been identified, respectively. The existence of different B19V genotypes in Chinese plasma donors has been investigated, however, the data regarding PARV4 were not available. The main objective of this study is to identify the genotypes of PARV4 circulating in Chinese plasma donors. By using a duplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay adapted for all genotypes of B19V and PARV4, 78 source plasma pools for fractionation were screened and quantified. Results showed that positive rates of B19V and PARV4 DNA in plasma pool samples were 25.64% and 14.10%, respectively. PARV4 sequences in two positive samples were next genotyped, and these two sequences belonged to PARV4 genotypes 1 and 2, respectively. In conclusion, the data present demonstrate the existence of PARV4 genotypes 1 and 2 in Chinese plasma donors for the first time and also show the relatively lower prevalence and level of PARV4 DNA in Chinese plasma donors in comparison with that of B19V DNA.

RESUMEN

The object detection algorithm based on vehicle-mounted lidar is a key component of the perception system on autonomous vehicles. It can provide high-precision and highly robust obstacle information for the safe driving of autonomous vehicles. However, most algorithms are often based on a large amount of point cloud data, which makes real-time detection difficult. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a 3D fast object detection method based on three main steps: First, the ground segmentation by discriminant image (GSDI) method is used to convert point cloud data into discriminant images for ground points segmentation, which avoids the direct computing of the point cloud data and improves the efficiency of ground points segmentation. Second, the image detector is used to generate the region of interest of the three-dimensional object, which effectively narrows the search range. Finally, the dynamic distance threshold clustering (DDTC) method is designed for different density of the point cloud data, which improves the detection effect of long-distance objects and avoids the over-segmentation phenomenon generated by the traditional algorithm. Experiments have showed that this algorithm can meet the real-time requirements of autonomous driving while maintaining high accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Successful microvascular anastomosis depends on sutures that adequately oppose both cut vessel edges. Trainees tend to take oversized or uneven bite. To improve early microsurgical skill acquisition using the rat, this study tests the belief that such bites compromise early patency by applying exaggerated bites to end-to-end arterial anastomoses. METHODS: Twelve Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of the four bite techniques to be applied to both femoral arteries (mean diameter, 0.8 mm). Large (L) and standard (S) bites measured 1.0 and 0.2 mm from the edge, respectively. Eight simple interrupted anastomoses were performed per bite technique, each labeled according to every proximal end bite size, followed by every distal end bite size: LL, LS, SL, and SS. Anastomosis time and blood flow rates were recorded and analyzed statistically. After sacrifice 5 days postoperation, anastomosis sections of each technique were examined histologically. RESULTS: All 24 anastomoses (100%) maintained patency for 5 days. There was no statistical difference between all postoperative blood flow measurements at any given time. Anastomosis times using LL, LS, SL, and SS bite techniques were 41.6, 33.2, 34.8, and 25.5 minutes, respectively. Anastomosis time for the traditional bite technique (SS) was significantly shorter than all other bite techniques (p < 0.05). Histological examination of the harvested segments from each group revealed similar pathophysiological features. CONCLUSION: Oversized bites (1 mm), placed symmetrically and asymmetrically across the anastomosis, do not affect early patency in the rat femoral artery. A reduced reliance on conventional guidelines for suture bites appears acceptable during microarterial anastomoses if the goal is vessel patency. However, we believe clinical competence involves the ability to place small, even bites consistently and uniformly. During microsurgical training, the occasional large bite need not be replaced; however, the trainee should be encouraged to take standard bites.

RESUMEN

A new approach for reprocessing of existing thermoset waste is presented. This work demonstrates that unrecyclable thermoset materials can be reprocessed using the concept of associative dynamic bonding, vitrimers. The developed recycling methodology relies on swelling the thermoset network into a solution of a catalyst, which enables transesterification reactions allowing dynamic bond exchange between ester and hydroxyl groups within the thermoset network. Thermal and mechanical properties for recycled polyurethane and epoxy networks are studied and a strategy to maintain the properties of recycled materials is discussed. The developed methodology promises recycling and even upcycling and reprocessing of previously thought intractable materials. Moreover, processability of vitrimerized thermosets with common thermoplastic manufacturing methods opens up the possibility of tuning recycled networks by adding nanoparticles. This flexibility keeps the application window of recycled thermosets very broad.

As dynamic cross-linking networks are intrinsically weaker than permanent covalent networks, it is a big challenge to obtain a stiff self-healing polymer using reversible networks. Inspired by the self-healable and mechanically adaptive nature of sea cucumber, we design a water-responsive self-healing polymer system with reversible and permanent covalent networks by cross-linking poly(propylene glycol) with boroxine and epoxy. This double cross-linked structure is self-healing due to the boroxine reversible network as well as showing a room-temperature tensile modulus of 1059 MPa and a tensile stress of 37 MPa, on a par with classic thermosets. The dynamic boroxine bonds provide the self-healing response and enable up to 80% recovery in modulus and tensile strength upon water contact. The system shows superior adhesion to metal substrates by comparison with the commercial epoxy-based structural adhesive. Besides, this system can change modulus from a stiff thermoset to soft rubber (by a factor of 150) upon water stimulus, enabling potential applications of either direct or transform printing for micro/nanofabrication. Moreover, by incorporating conductive nanofillers, it becomes feasible to fabricate self-healing and versatile strain/stress sensors based on a single thermoset, with potential applications in wearable electronics for human healthcare.

This study was conducted to investigate the pattern of DNA methylation in vitrified-thawed mouse oocytes and their in vitro fertilized early embryos. Firstly, mouse oocytes at metaphase II (MII) stage of meiosis were allocated randomly into three groups: (1) untreated (control); (2) exposed to vitrification solution without being plunged into liquid nitrogen (toxicity); or (3) vitrified by open-pulled straw (OPS) method (vitrification). Oocytes from all three groups were fertilized subsequently in vitro. The level of DNA methylation in the MII oocytes and their early embryos was then examined by immunofluorescence using an anti-5-methylcytosine (anti-5-MeC) monoclonal antibody and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated goat anti-mouse IgG. Developmental rates to 2-cell embryos (62.28%) and blastocysts (43.68%) of the vitrified-thawed oocytes were lower (P < 0.01) than those of fresh oocytes (81.47%, 61.99%) and vitrification solution treated (79.20%, 60.04%) oocytes. DNA methylation (as reflected by 5-MeC fluorescence intensity) in the vitrification group was less (P < 0.01) for MII oocyte and 2- to 8-cell stages compared with that in the control and toxicity groups. Accordingly, a reduction in global genomic methylation due to vitrification of MII oocytes may result in compromised in vitro developmental potential in early mouse embryos.
