RESUMEN

The O2 content of the global ocean has been declining progressively over the past decades, mainly because of human activities and global warming. Despite this situation, the responses of macrobenthos under hypoxic conditions remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a long-term observation (2015-2022) to investigate the intricate impact of summer hypoxia on macrobenthic communities in a semi-enclosed bay of the North Yellow Sea. Comparative analyses revealed higher macrobenthos abundance (1956.8 ± 1507.5 ind./m2 vs. 871.8 ± 636.9 ind./m2) and biomass (8.2 ± 4.1 g/m2 vs. 5.6 ± 3.2 g/m2) at hypoxic sites compared to normoxic sites during hypoxic years. Notably, polychaete species demonstrated remarkable adaptability, dominating hypoxic sites, and shaping community structure. The decline in biodiversity underscored the vulnerability and diminished resilience of macrobenthic communities to hypoxic stressors. Stable isotope analysis provided valuable insights into food web structures. The average trophic level of macrobenthos measured 2.84 ± 0.70 at hypoxic sites, contrasting with the higher value of 3.14 ± 0.74 observed at normoxic sites, indicating the absence of predators at high trophic levels under hypoxic conditions. Moreover, trophic interactions were significantly altered, resulting in a simplified and more vulnerable macrobenthic trophic structure. The findings underscored the importance of comprehensive research to understand the complex responses of macrobenthic communities to hypoxia, thereby informing future conservation efforts in impacted ecosystems.

RESUMEN

The ocean is facing a multitude of abiotic stresses due to factors such as climate change and pollution. Understanding how organisms in the ocean respond to these global changes is vital to better predicting consequences. Sea cucumbers are popular echinoderms with multiple ecological, nutritional, and pharmaceutical benefits. Here, we reviewed the effects of environmental change on an ecologically important echinoderm of the ocean, aiming to understand their response better, which could facilitate healthy culture programs under environmental changes and draw attention to knowledge gaps. After screening articles from the databases, 142 studies were included on the influence of emergent contaminants and climate variation on the early developmental stages and adults of sea cucumbers. We outlined the potential mechanism underlying the physiological response of sea cucumbers to emerging contaminants and climate change. It can be concluded that the physiological response of sea cucumbers to emergent contaminants differs from their response to climate change. Sea cucumbers could accumulate pollutants in their organs but are aestivated when exposed to extreme climate change. Research showed that the physiological response of sea cucumbers to pollutants indicates that these pollutants impair critical physiological processes, particularly during the more susceptible early phases of development compared to adults, and the accumulation of these pollutants in adults is often observed. For climate change, sea cucumbers showed gradual adaptation to the slight variation. However, sea cucumbers undergo aestivation under extreme conditions. Based on this review, critical suggestions for future research are presented, and we call for more efforts focusing on the co-occurrence of different stressors to extend the knowledge regarding the effects of environmental changes on these economically and ecologically important species.

RESUMEN

CO2-induced ocean acidification and warming pose ecological threats to marine life, especially calcifying species such as echinoderms, who rely on biomineralization for skeleton formation. However, previous studies on echinoderm calcification amid climate change had a strong bias towards heavily calcified echinoderms, with little research on lightly calcified ones, such as sea cucumbers. Here, we analyzed the embryo-larval development and their biomineralization-related gene expression of a lightly calcified echinoderm, the sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus), under experimental seawater acidification (OA) and/or warming (OW). Results showed that OA (- 0.37 units) delayed development and decreased body size (8.58-56.25 % and 0.36-19.66 % decreases in stage duration and body length, respectively), whereas OW (+3.1 °C) accelerated development and increased body size (33.99-55.28 % increase in stage duration and 2.44-14.41 % enlargement in body length). OW buffered the negative effects of OA on the development timing and body size of A. japonicus. Additionally, no target genes were expressed in the blastula stage, and only two biomineralization genes (colp3α, cyp2) and five TFs (erg, tgif, foxN2/3, gata1/2/3, and tbr) were expressed throughout the embryo-larval development. Our findings suggest that the low calcification in A. japonicus larvae may be caused by biomineralization genes contraction, and low expression of those genes. Furthermore, this study indicated that seawater acidification and warming affect expression of biomineralization-related genes, and had an effect on body size and development rate during the embryo-larval stage in sea cucumbers. Our study is a first step toward a better understanding of the complexity of high pCO2 on calcification and helpful for revealing the adaptive strategy of less-calcified echinoderms amid climate change.

RESUMEN

The increasing prevalence of antibiotics in seawater across global coastal areas, coupled with the ocean acidification induced by climate change, present a multifaceted challenge to marine ecosystems, particularly impacting the key physiological processes of marine organisms. Apoptosis is a critical adaptive response essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and defending against environmental threats. In this study, bay scallops Argopecten irradians irradians were exposed to multiple antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, norfloxacin, and erythromycin, each at a concentration of 1 µg/L) combined with/without acidic seawater (pH 7.6) for 35 days. The single and interactive effects of the two stressors on apoptosis and the underlying mechanisms in hemocytes of A. irradians irradians were determined through flow cytometry analysis, comet assay, oxidative stress biomarkers analysis, and transcriptome analysis. Results showed that apoptosis could be triggered by either AM exposure or OA exposure, but through different pathways. Exposure to AM leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage, which in turn triggers apoptosis via a series of cellular events in both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. Conversely, while OA exposure similarly induced apoptosis, its effects are comparatively subdued and are predominantly mediated through the intrinsic pathway. Additionally, the synergistic effects of AM and OA exposure induced pronounced mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damages in the hemocytes of A. irradians irradians. Despite the evident cellular distress and the potential initiation of apoptotic pathways, the actual execution of apoptosis appears to be restrained, which might be attributed to an energy deficit within the hemocytes. Our findings underscore the constrained tolerance capacity of A. irradians irradians when faced with multiple environmental stressors, and shed light on the ecotoxicity of antibiotic pollution in the ocean under prospective climate change scenarios.

RESUMEN

Ocean acidification (OA) and ocean warming (OW) are potential obstacles to the survival and growth of marine organisms, particularly those that rely on calcification. This study investigated the single and joint effects of OA and OW on sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus larvae raised under combinations of two temperatures (19 °C or 22 °C) and two pCO2 levels (400 or 1000 µatm) that reflect the current and end-of-21st-century projected ocean scenarios. The investigation focused on assessing larval development and identifying differences in gene expression patterns at four crucial embryo-larval stages (blastula, gastrula, auricularia, and doliolaria) of sea cucumbers, using RNA-seq. Results showed the detrimental effect of OA on the early development and body growth of A. japonicus larvae and a reduction in the expression of genes associated with biomineralization, skeletogenesis, and ion homeostasis. This effect was particularly pronounced during the doliolaria stage, indicating the presence of bottlenecks in larval development at this transition phase between the larval and megalopa stages in response to OA. OW accelerated the larval development across four stages of A. japonicus, especially at the blastula and doliolaria stages, but resulted in a widespread upregulation of genes related to heat shock proteins, antioxidant defense, and immune response. Significantly, the negative effects of elevated pCO2 on the developmental process of larvae appeared to be mitigated when accompanied by increased temperatures at the expense of reduced immune resilience and increased system fragility. These findings suggest that alterations in gene expression within the larvae of A. japonicus provide a mechanism to adapt to stressors arising from a rapidly changing oceanic environment.

RESUMEN

Microplastics (MPs) are widely distributed in marine environments. The pollution characteristics and risk assessment of MPs in estuarine sediments are still insufficient. In this study, the MPs pollution characteristics in surface sediments of the Liao Estuary and Daliao Estuary were investigated. The characteristics of MPs in sediments were determined by stereo microscopy and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that the average MPs abundance ranged from 32.33 to 49.91 items·kg-1 d.w. The MPs were mainly composed of 500-2000 µm black and blue fibers. Five polymer types were identified, including rayon (RA) (87.46 %), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (6.81 %), polyamide (PA) (2.94 %), polypropylene (PP) (2.17 %) and polyethylene (PE) (0.62 %). The pollution load index (PLI) risk assessment showed that all sampling sites were at Hazard Level I. Our results can provide useful information for assessing the environmental risks of MPs in coastal areas of China.

RESUMEN

The rapa whelk Rapana venosa, an economically important marine fishery resource in China but a major invader all over the world, changes from a phytophagous to a carnivorous form following settlement and metamorphosis. However, the low settlement and metamorphosis rates (<1%) of larvae limit the abundance of R. venosa. This critical step (settlement and metamorphosis) remains poorly characterized but may be related to how larvae perceive the presence of shellfish, their new source of food. Here, we report that larvae may use olfactory perception to sense shellfish. Olfactory receptor (OR) genes are involved in odor sensing in animals. We identified a total of 463 OR genes, which could be grouped into nine clades based on phylogenetic analysis. When assessing the attraction of larvae at different developmental stages to oyster odor, R. venosa showed active settlement and metamorphosis behavior only at the J4 stage (competent larva, 1000-1500 µm shell length) and in the presence of shellfish odor at the same time. Expression of OR gene family members differed between stage 2 (four-spiral whorl stage) and stage 1 (single- to three-spiral whorl stage), indicating significant changes in the olfactory system during larval development. These findings broaden our understanding of olfactory perception, settlement, and metamorphosis in gastropods and can be used to improve R. venosa harvesting, as well as the sustainable development and utilization of this resource.

RESUMEN

Polychaete worms can biotransform polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environments, and the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme plays an important role in this process. Herein, a novel cytochrome P450 gene was identified and characterized from the polychaete worm Perinereis aibuhitensis. The full-length cDNA, which is named CYP4V82, is 1709 bp encoding a protein of 509 amino acids and has high similarity to CYP4V. The expression levels of CYP4V82 and CYP4BB4 (a CYP gene identified from P. aibuhitensis in a previous study, Chen et al. Mar Pollut Bull 64:1782-1788, 2012) exposure to various concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) (0.5, 2, 4, and 8 µg/L) and same mass concentrations of fluoranthene (Flu, 3.2 µg/L), phenanthrene (Phe, 2.9 µg/L), B[a]P (4.0 µg/L) were detected to identify the function of the CYP4 family in P. aibuhitensis. Compared with CYP4BB4, CYP4V82 mRNA was minimally expressed on day 7 but highly sensitive on day 14. Notably, the expression levels of CYP4V82 and CYP4BB4 were relatively different in short-term responses to PAHs with different benzene rings of the same concentration. The expression of CYP4V82 in the B[a]P group was the highest, while that of CYP4BB4 in the Phe group was relatively higher than the two other groups. These findings suggest that PAHs are associated with the induction of CYP4V82 and CYP4BB4 expressions in P. aibuhitensis, which may have different efficiencies in the detoxification of PAHs.

RESUMEN

Microplastics (MPs) in mariculture environments may have an impact on mariculture and ecosystems. This study sampled the sediments in mariculture ponds and offshore areas in Qingduizi Bay during winter and summer. The abundance, characteristics, spatiotemporal distribution and pollution risk of microplastics were analyzed. The results showed that the abundance of MPs in the mariculture pond and offshore area was 49.2 ± 35.9 items·kg-1 d.w. and 17.1 ± 9.9 items·kg-1 d.w.; the MPs were mainly composed of transparent fibers of thickness 2000-5000 µm, with the main polymers being polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and cellophane (CP). The spatial distribution showed a downward trend from the inside to the outside, but the difference was not significant when comparing different seasons. The pollution load index (PLI) risk assessment showed that all sampling sites were at Hazard Level I. This study can provide valuable information for the risk assessment of microplastic pollution in mariculture areas.

RESUMEN

Polychaete worms can eliminate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environments through a mechanism that increases their water solubility. This detoxification starts with cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) and then with glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). Here, a novel GST gene was identified and characterized from the widespread polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis. The full-length cDNA of GST is 1544 bp and encodes 256 amino acids, belonging to the omega class. Gene expression patterns in P. aibuhitensis showed that its transcriptional level was positively correlated with the concentration of benzo[α]pyrene (0.5, 2, 4, and 8 µg/L) exposure but was negatively correlated with a PAH benzene ring after it was exposed to the same mass concentrations of fluoranthene (3.2 µg/L), phenanthrene (2.9 µg/L), and benzo[α]pyrene (4.0 µg/L) during the 14-day experimentation. These findings indicate that omega GST may play an important role in the phase II detoxification of PAHs in polychaete worms, and the persistence and bioavailability of PAHs may depend on benzene rings.

RESUMEN

Extensive application of antibiotics leads to their ubiquitous occurrence in coastal aquatic environments. However, it remains largely unknown whether antibiotics can be bioaccumulated and biotransformed in major mariculture organisms such as sea cucumbers and toxicokinetic models for Echinodermata are lacking. In this study, laboratory exposure experiments on juvenile sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus) were performed for seven antibiotics (sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, enrofloxacin, ofloxacin, clarithromycin, and azithromycin). Field sea cucumber and surrounding seawater samples were also analyzed. Results show that the sea cucumbers tend to accumulate high concentrations of the antibiotics with kinetic bioconcentration factors (BCFs) up to 1719.7 L·kg-1 for ofloxacin. The BCFs determined in the laboratory agree well with those estimated from the field measurements. Seven biotransformation products (BTPs) of the antibiotics were identified, four of which were not reported previously in aquatic organisms. The BTPs were mainly found in the digestive tract, indicating its high capacity in the biotransformation. A multicompartmental toxicokinetic model based on the principles of passive diffusion was developed, which can successfully predict time-course concentrations of the antibiotics in different compartments of the juvenile sea cucumbers. The findings may offer a scientific basis for assessing health risks and guiding healthy mariculture of sea cucumbers.

RESUMEN

The occurrence and estrogenic activities of seven phenolic endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) compounds (nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (4-OP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 4-tertbutylphenol (4-t-BP), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and bisphenol A (BPA)) in the sediments of Qingduizi Bay (NorthernYellow Sea, China) in superficial sediments were investigated to evaluate their potential ecological impacts on the health of aquaculture organisms. All compounds, except 4-OP and 4-t-BP, were recorded in most sampling sites (1.06-28.07 ng g-1 dw in maricultural ponds (MPs), 1.98-8.22 ng g-1 dw in outer bay (OB)). BPA and 4-t-OP were the predominant EDC compounds in MPs and OB, respectively. Correlation between BPA and 4-t-OP indicated these compounds may share a similar source or pathway. Analyzed estrogenic activity revealed a low risk of total EDCs. The ranking of risk quotient showed 4-t-OP posed a median risk and TBBPA posed a high risk to the aquatic ecosystem.

RESUMEN

This study investigated heavy metals (Ni, Zn, Cr, Cu, As, Pb, Cd and Hg) concentrations in surface sediment of Subei Shoal, China, to illustrate their spatial distribution characteristics, sources and potential ecological risk of pollution. Contents of total organic carbon (TOC), clay, silt and sand were 1.7 ±â€¯0.8%, 3.3 ±â€¯3.2%, 13.6 ±â€¯14.2% and 83.1 ±â€¯17.4%, respectively. The spatial distribution of TOC, clay and silt were similar; however, distribution of Hg was inverse. Concentrations of Ni, Zn, Cr, Cu, As, Pb, Cd and Hg were 47.88 ±â€¯8.93, 38.18 ±â€¯8.86, 19.22 ±â€¯5.14, 11.32 ±â€¯5.07, 6.97 ±â€¯2.45, 0.13 ±â€¯0.72, 0.56 ±â€¯0.77 and 0.06 ±â€¯0.02 mg kg-1 sediment, respectively. Principal component analysis suggested that Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr and Ni were mainly derived from natural sources, whereas Pb, Cd, As and Hg from industrial and agricultural sources. Results of geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk index (RI), pollution load index (PLI), toxic risk index (TRI) and contamination severity index (CSI) demonstrated that pollution levels of Cd and Hg were moderate, which should attract more attention as main pollution factors. The pollution was mainly distributed in the central and northern parts, and the southern part had a good ecological environment. Moreover, the contaminated stations accounted respective for 33.4%, 25.9%, 33.3% and 70.4% of RI, PLI, TRI and CSI, of which 70.4% of the contamination severity index stations contained 66.7% of much lower severity stations. These findings could contribute to more effective exploitation of tidal flat resources, and the prevention and treatment of tidal marsh environment.

RESUMEN

Research into the effects of reduced pH caused by rising CO2 on echinoderms has been strongly biased toward those groups which rely heavily on calcification, such as sea urchins. There is very limited information available for groups that are less reliant on calcification, such as sea cucumbers. Moreover, plasticity in physiology and behavior in holothurians, which is considered to be critical to cope with ocean acidification, remains even less understood. Here, we examined the effects of a 22-week exposure to three pH levels (pH 7.97, 7.88, and 7.79) on the responses of adult Holothuria forskali. This is an abundant and ecologically important sea cucumber in shallow waters of the northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. The holothurians did not exhibit serious acidosis after a 4-week gradually decreased pH exposure, possibly due to the slow acclimation period. After an additional 18 weeks of exposure, coelomic acid-base parameters did not differ significantly among the pH treatments, whereas they were higher than in week 4. Gonad development, defense behavior, and the structure and Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations of calcareous endoskeleton deposited in the body wall were all unaffected by decreased levels of seawater pH. No statistical differences were found after 22 weeks, and adult H. forskali showed strong physiological and behavioral plasticity to the effects of lowered seawater pH. While the interpretation of our results is restricted due to small sample sizes, this first long-term study of the effects of seawater acidification on sea cucumbers revealed resilience within the wide natural range of pCO2 found in NE Atlantic coastal waters.

RESUMEN

Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and potential ecological risks of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and seven endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in the intertidal sediment at the Shuangtaizi Estuary, Bohai Sea of China were analyzed. Results showed that the total PAH concentrations ranged from 28.79ngg-1 dw to 281.97ngg-1 dw (mean: 115.92ngg-1 dw) and the total EDC concentrations from 0.52ngg-1 dw to 126.73ngg-1 dw (mean: 37.49ngg-1 dw). The distribution pattern for the PAHs was generally different from that of the EDCs possibly due to their distinct sources and n-octanol-/water partition coefficients (KOW). Qualitative and quantitative analytical results showed that PAH sources were mainly from a mixture of pyrogenic and petrogenic contributions. The higher levels at the southeast of Geligang indicated that the EDC pollutants may have mainly originated from the plastic industry and other chemical plants located along the Liao River. Ecological risk assessment revealed that PAHs exhibited low ecotoxicological effects, whereas EDCs, especially 4-tert-octylphenol and bisphenol A, had high ecological hazard to the estuarine biota.

RESUMEN

Levels, sources, and potential ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface seawater and sediments from the northern Liaodong Bay of China were seasonally investigated. Total concentrations of 16 PAHs varied from 145.96ng/L to 896.58ng/L in seawater, and from 191.99ng/g to 624.44ng/g in sediments. PAH concentrations in seawater differed significantly, whereas those in sediments exhibited a relatively stable pattern across seasons. PAHs with low molecular weight were predominant in seawater, but PAHs with high molecular weight were abundant in sediments. Crop straw and coal combustion were the main PAH pollution sources. The current levels of PAHs in the northern Liaodong Bay are relatively moderate compared with those in other bays and estuaries. Sediment from all sampling sites is characterized by low to medium ecotoxicological risk. No highly negative toxic effect could occur on the organisms and ecosystems in the northern Liaodong Bay.

RESUMEN

Ocean acidification (OA) caused by excessive CO2 is a potential ecological threat to marine organisms. The impacts of OA on echinoderms are well-documented, but there has been a strong bias towards sea urchins, and limited information is available on sea cucumbers. This work examined the effect of medium-term (60 days) exposure to three pH levels (pH 8.06, 7.72, and 7.41, covering present and future pH variability) on the bioenergetic responses of the sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus, an ecologically and economically important holothurian in Asian coasts. Results showed that the measured specific growth rate linearly decreased with decreased pH, leading to a 0.42 %·day(-1) decrease at pH 7.41 compared with that at pH 8.06. The impacts of pH on physiological energetics were variable: measured energy consumption and defecation rates linearly decreased with decreased pH, whereas maintenance energy in calculated respiration and excretion were not significantly affected. No shift in energy allocation pattern was observed in A. japonicus upon exposure to pH 7.72 compared with pH 8.06. However, a significant shift in energy budget occurred upon exposure to pH 7.41, leading to decreased energy intake and increased percentage of energy that was lost in feces, thereby resulting in a significantly lowered allocation into somatic growth. These findings indicate that adult A. japonicus is resilient to the OA scenario at the end of the twenty-first century, but further acidification may negatively influence the grazing capability and growth, thereby influencing its ecological functioning as an "ecosystem engineer" and potentially harming its culture output.

RESUMEN

In order to elucidate the role of bottom-cultured clams in the coastal nutrient cycle, the seasonal filtration, ingestion and biodeposition rates were in situ measured and carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) budgets of Ruditapes philippinarum among four seasons were modeled. The results showed that the scope for growth of R. philippinarum in carbon (SFG(C)), nitrogen (SFG(N)), and phosphorus (SFG(P)) all varied significantly among seasons, with the highest values in spring. Meanwhile, SFG(C) was negative in summer, SFG(N) and SFG(P) were always positive throughout the year. The seasonal variations of SFG(C), SFG(N) and SFG(P) were -3.94-49.82 mg C x ind(-1) x d(-1), 0.72-9.49 mg N x ind(-1) x d(-1), and 0.15-3.06 mg P x ind(-1) x d(-1), respectively. The net growth efficiencies in carbon (K(C2)), nitrogen (K(N2)), and phosphorus (K(P2)) also showed a distinct seasonal pattern among seasons, and ranked as K(P2) > K(N2) > K(C2). The C, N, and P budgets illustrated that the R. philippinarum population relatively used more N and P than C for growth and efficiently transferred the pelagic primary production to a higher trophic level. The current study suggested that R. philippinarum bottom-cultured at large scale might play a dominant role in the nutrient cycle of the coastal ecosystem and should be considered as an important ecological component in coastal areas.

RESUMEN

Levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in sediments from the sandy flat system of Shuangtaizi Estuary, the highest-latitude estuary in China, were investigated to identify their possible sources and potential ecological risk. The concentrations of 28 PCBs and 18 OCPs ranged from 1.83 to 36.68 ng g(-1) dw (mean 10.53 ng g(-1) dw) and from 0.02 to 14.57 ng g(-1) dw (mean 5.65 ng g(-1) dw), respectively. Generally, these organic pollutants showed an obvious spatial distribution, and relatively high levels were found at the high-tidal zone near river mouths. Compositional analyses indicated that tetra-PCBs were dominant for PCBs, whereas heptachlor was identified to be prevalent for OCPs in surficial sediment in the sand flats of Shuangtaizi Estuary. Overall, Shuangtaizi Estuary had moderate PCB and OCP levels in the sand flat sediments and posed a low ecological hazard to aquatic biota. Our results indicated that the sediment PCBs came from nonpoint deposition, such as atmospheric contribution and river input, for light chlorinated congeners and point source deposition, such as the industrial sources along river flow, for highly chlorinated congeners, whereas OCPs originate mainly from old residuals and new usage of pesticides in agriculture and aquaculture.

RESUMEN

We evaluated the impact of ocean acidification on the early development of sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus. The effect of pH-levels (pH 8.04, 7.85, 7.70 and 7.42) were tested on post-fertilization success, developmental (stage duration) and growth rates. Post-fertilization success decreased linearly with pH leading to a 6% decrease at pH 7.42 as compared to pH 8.1. The impact of pH on developmental time was stage-dependent: (1) stage duration increased linearly with decreasing pH in early-auricularia stage; (2) decreased linearly with decreasing pH in the mid-auricularia stage; but (3) pH decline had no effect on the late-auricularia stage. At the end of the experiment, the size of doliolaria larvae linearly increased with decreasing pH. In conclusion, a 0.62 unit decrease in pH had relatively small effects on A. japonicus early life-history compared to other echinoderms, leading to a maximum of 6% decrease in post-fertilization success and subtle effects on growth and development.
