RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluated the impact of a deep learning (DL)-based image reconstruction on multi-arterial-phase magnetic resonance imaging (MA-MRI) for small hypervascular hepatic masses in patients who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 55 adult patients (aged ≥ 18 years) with small hepatic hypervascular mass (≤ 3 cm) between December 2022 and February 2023. All patients underwent MA-MRI, subsequently reconstructed with a DL-based application. Qualitative assessment with Linkert scale including motion artifact (MA), liver edge (LE), hepatic vessel clarity (HVC) and image quality (IQ) was performed. Quantitative image analysis including signal to noise ratio (SNR), contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and noise was performed. RESULTS: On both arterial phases (APs), all qualitative parameters were significantly improved after DL-based image reconstruction. (LE on 1st AP, 1.22 vs 1.61; LE on 2nd AP, 1.21 vs 1.65; HVC on 1st AP, 1.24 vs 1.39; HVC on 2nd AP, 1.24 vs 1.44; IQ on 1st AP, 1.17 vs 1.45; IQ on 2nd AP, 1.17 vs 1.47, all p values < 0.05). The SNR, CNR and noise were significantly improved after DL-based image reconstruction. (SNR on AP1, 279.08 vs 176.14; SNR on AP2, 334.34 vs 199.24; CNR on AP1, 106.09 vs 64.14; CNR on AP2, 129.66 vs 73.73; noise on AP1, 1.51 vs 2.33; noise on AP2, 1.45 vs 2.28, all p values < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MA-MRI with DL-based image reconstruction improved the qualitative and quantitative parameters. Despite the short acquisition time, high-quality MA-MRI is now achievable.

RESUMEN

Acute phlegmonous esophagitis is a very rare, life-threatening form of esophagitis, characterized by diffuse bacterial infection and pus formation within the submucosal and muscularis layers of the esophagus. We describe a case in which contrast-enhanced chest CT was useful for evaluating the severity of phlegmonous esophagitis, which was overlooked and underestimated by endoscopy.

RESUMEN

Wearable healthcare devices have garnered substantial interest for the realization of personal health management by monitoring the physiological parameters of individuals. Attaining the integrity between the devices and the biological interfaces is one of the greatest challenges to achieving high-quality body information in dynamic conditions. Liquid metals, which exist in the liquid phase at room temperatures, are advanced intensively as conductors for deformable devices because of their excellent stretchability and self-healing ability. The unique surface chemistry of liquid metals allows the development of various sensors and devices in wearable form. Also, the biocompatibility of liquid metals, which is verified through numerous biomedical applications, holds immense potential in uses on the surface and inside of a living body. Here, the recent progress of liquid metal-based wearable electronic devices for healthcare with respect to the featured properties and the processing technologies is discussed. Representative examples of applications such as biosensors, neural interfaces, and a soft interconnection for devices are reviewed. The current challenges and prospects for further development are also discussed, and the future directions of advances in the latest research are explored.

Many natural compounds have been reported to improve cognitive function in cell- and animal-based studies. In this clinical trial, we evaluated the efficacy of ethanolic extract of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten stem for improving cognitive function using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (n = 81) in aged people. After 12 weeks of administration of OFE (a mixture of ethanolic extract of O. ficus-indica var. Saboten stem and dextrin) or placebo, the effect on cognitive function was assessed. Overall, OFE did not show a significant difference from the placebo in terms of efficacy. However, the cognitive function significantly improved in the OFE group compared with the placebo group in the subgroup ≤70 years of age, which means that the effect of OFE administration exhibits an age-dependent effect. In addition, the safety of OFE was confirmed by analyzing blood test results, vital signs, and electrocardiograms. In conclusion, OFE administration in participants ≤70 years of age shows a positive effect on overall cognitive function. The stem of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten is edible and has been used as a medicinal herb on Jeju Island in Korea. We previously reported that the butanolic extract of O. ficus-indica var. saboten exerts the enhancement of long-term memory in mice. However, the antiamnesic effects of O. ficus-indica var. saboten and its mode of action has not been clearly elucidated. In the present study, we explored the effects of the ethanolic extract of stems of O. ficus-indica var. saboten (EOFS) on cognitive performance in mouse and attempted to delineate its mechanism of action. We used the passive avoidance, Y-maze, and novel object recognition tests to assess its effects on cognitive functions in scopolamine-induced memory-impaired mice. We observed that EOFS (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) ameliorated scopolamine-induced cognitive dysfunction. We also explored its mechanism of action by conducting an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity assay using the mouse whole brain and Western blot using the mouse hippocampal tissue. Western blot analysis and the ex vivo study revealed that EOFS increased the levels of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase and cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus. It also inhibited AChE activity in the brain. Our findings suggest that EOFS would be useful for the treatment of cholinergic blockade-induced cognitive dysfunction.
