RESUMEN

FPGA-based data acquisition and processing systems play an important role in modern high-speed, multichannel measurement systems, especially in High-Energy and Plasma Physics. Such FPGA-based systems require an extended control and diagnostics part corresponding to the complexity of the controlled system. Managing the complex structure of registers while keeping the tight coupling between hardware and software is a tedious and potentially error-prone process. Various existing solutions aimed at helping that task do not perfectly match all specific requirements of that application area. The paper presents a new solution based on the XML system description, facilitating the automated generation of the control system's HDL code and software components and enabling easy integration with the control software. The emphasis is put on reusability, ease of maintenance in the case of system modification, easy detection of mistakes, and the possibility of use in modern FPGAs. The presented system has been successfully used in data acquisition and preprocessing projects in high-energy physics experiments. It enables easy creation and modification of the control system definition and convenient access to the control and diagnostic blocks. The presented system is an open-source solution and may be adopted by the user for particular needs.

RESUMEN

This article presents a novel software-defined server-based solutions that were introduced in the fast, real-time computation systems for soft X-ray diagnostics for the WEST (Tungsten Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) reactor in Cadarache, France. The objective of the research was to provide a fast processing of data at high throughput and with low latencies for investigating the interplay between the particle transport and magnetohydrodynamic activity. The long-term objective is to implement in the future a fast feedback signal in the reactor control mechanisms to sustain the fusion reaction. The implemented electronic measurement device is anticipated to be deployed in the WEST. A standalone software-defined computation engine was designed to handle data collected at high rates in the server back-end of the system. Signals are obtained from the front-end field-programmable gate array mezzanine cards that acquire and perform a selection from the gas electron multiplier detector. A fast, authorial library for plasma diagnostics was written in C++. It originated from reference offline MATLAB implementations. They were redesigned for runtime analysis during the experiment in the novel online modes of operation. The implementation allowed the benchmarking, evaluation, and optimization of plasma processing algorithms with the possibility to check the consistency with reference computations written in MATLAB. The back-end software and hardware architecture are presented with data evaluation mechanisms. The online modes of operation for the WEST are discussed. The results concerning the performance of the processing and the introduced functionality are presented.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to compare three methods of estimating critical closing pressure (CrCP) in a scenario of a controlled increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) induced during an infusion test in patients with suspected normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 37 NPH patients who underwent infusion tests. Computer recordings of directly measured intracranial pressure (ICP), arterial blood pressure (ABP) and transcranial Doppler cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) were used. The CrCP was calculated using three methods: first harmonics ratio of the pulse waveforms of ABP and CBFV (CrCPA) and two methods based on a model of cerebrovascular impedance, as a function of cerebral perfusion pressure (CrCPinv), and as a function of ABP (CrCPninv). RESULTS: There is good agreement among the three methods of CrCP calculation, with correlation coefficients being greater than 0.8 (p < 0.0001). For the CrCPA method, negative values were found for about 20% of all results. Negative values of CrCP were not observed in estimators based on cerebrovascular impedance. During the controlled rise of ICP, all three estimators of CrCP increased significantly (p < 0.05). The strongest correlation between ICP and CrCP was found for CrCPinv (median R = 0.41). CONCLUSION: Invasive CrCP is most sensitive to variations in ICP and can be used as an indicator of the status of the cerebrovascular system during infusion tests.

In most people the left hemisphere of the brain is dominant for language functions. Because of an increased incidence of atypical language lateralisation in the right hemisphere of left-handed neurological patients, more systematic studies on handedness and cerebral asymmetry of language have been undertaken. The present study is aimed at clarification of the relationship between handedness and language dominance in healthy subjects. Lateralisation was measured directly using functional transcranial Doppler sonography in left-handed subjects. Twenty-six individuals participated in the study. Three kinds of tasks were used, differing in the material involved and in appropriate strategies to be employed by the subjects. Two important parameters of the MCA blood flow were analysed: mean relative increase in the blood flow velocity (MDV) and specific patterns of cognitive task performance (i.e. performance profiles). Our results indicate that the incidence of the right hemisphere dominance for language depends on the degree of handedness, since only in the group of consistent left-handers language was right lateralised. In other left-handers both cerebral hemispheres were functionally equivalent. The measurement of MCA blood flow velocity changes using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography seems to be a simple and non-invasive method of assessing the functioning of the two hemispheres of human brain.
