RESUMEN

The Microbial Desalination Cell (MDC) stands out as an innovative and a sustainable technology for both renewable energy generation and water treatment. The choice of electron acceptor significantly influences the efficiency of electricity flow. This study focuses on exploring the MDC performance under different conditions, including variations in cathode electron acceptors, initial pH levels, and hydraulic retention time (HRT). The investigation assesses simultaneous reduction of TDS and power generation from Caspian Sea water, a prominent saline water source in northern Iran, in both open-circuit (OC) and closed-circuit (CC) modes. The findings reveal that sodium hypochlorite, potassium permanganate, and potassium bromate as catholyte achieved TDS reduction rates of 84%, 77%, and 72%, respectively, under CC conditions at pH 5. Furthermore, it was observed that increasing HRT and pH levels lead to a decrease in desalination efficiency and power generation. Notably, the study highlights that the maximum power density was attained using permanganate, hypochlorite, and bromate as catholyte in both OC and CC configurations. By showcasing the adaptability of MDC performance with different cathode electron acceptors under varying conditions, this research offers valuable insights for optimizing MDC efficiency when treating real saline water sources.

INTRODUCTION: Managers in the health care sector have the responsibility of accomplishing objectives and guaranteeing the excellence of services. To be chosen as a manager in a health organization, individuals must possess specific qualities and skills. Examining the process of selecting and appointing managers at the highest level of service provision might offer policymakers valuable insights into the importance of considering competences when choosing and appointing leaders of health centers. Hence, this study was conducted to identify the characteristics that influence the selection process of heads of city health centers in Iran. METHODS: The present study employed a qualitative and phenomenological approach, utilizing interviews performed in the year 2023. The study sample consisted of health deputy from medical sciences universities, local health network managers, and heads of city health center. The participants were selected using a purposive selection method. A total of 16 male participants were interviewed, and the interviews were then analyzed using MAXQDA-10 software using the usual content analysis method. RESULTS: In this study, the factors affecting the selection of the heads of health care centers were classified into two general topics: individual factors and environmental factors, and eight sub-topics, including health literacy, experience, individual characteristics, communication skills, mental characteristics, legal issues, political factors, and cultural factors. CONCLUSION: The development of health literacy, specialized knowledge, and communication skills to coordinate and resolve organizational problems helps train competent managers. Top health system managers, who select health center managers, must understand political and cultural variables and regulate and steer their influence to select effective managers.

Autophagy is a cellular process that plays a major role in the fate of tumor cells. Understanding the role of autophagy in cancer therapy is a major challenge, particularly for breast cancer as the sole top cause of mortality among women. In this study, we evaluated the gene expression of mTOR and Beclin1 and the levels of p62 protein, in breast tumors and compared them to a control condition. To explore the role of autophagy in breast cancer, we acquired tumor biopsies from 41 new cases of breast cancer patients. We extracted total RNA from each biopsy and used real-time PCR to quantify Beclin1 and mTOR-specific RNA expression. In addition, we evaluated the expression of the p62 protein in paraffin-embedded tumor tissue using the immunohistochemistry technique. The data revealed an upregulation of Beclin1 and a downregulation of mTOR in tumor tissues compared to the control condition. The correlation between p62 expression and Beclin1/mTOR showed a negative and positive correlation, respectively, confirming autophagy activation in the tumor tissues. However, there was no correlation between autophagy markers and tumor size, grade and stage. The findings revealed that autophagy activation was found in breast tumor tissues, suggesting that autophagy can be a target for breast cancer therapy.
