RESUMEN

Drug delivery nanosystems (DDnS) is widely developed recently. Gelatin is a high-potential biomaterial originated from natural resources for anticancer DDnS, which can effectively improve the utilization of anticancer drugs and reduce side effects. The hydrophilic, amphoteric behavior and sol-gel transition of gelatin can be used to fulfill various requirements of anticancer DDnS. Additionally, the high number of multifunctional groups on the surface of gelatin provides the possibility of crosslinking and further modifications. In this review, we focus on the properties of gelatin and briefly elaborate the correlation between the properties and anticancer DDnS. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of gelatin-based DDnS in various cancer treatments. Overall, we have summarized the excellent properties of gelatin and correlated with DDnS to provide a manual for the design of gelatin-based materials for DDnS.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The goal of the study was to investigate the burden of transfusion- transmitted infections (TTIs) hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis, and malarial parasite (MP) in ABO Blood Groups and Rh Type System among voluntarily blood donors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan. It is a retrospective single center cross sectional study. This study was conducted from June 2020 to September 2021 (16 months) at the frontier foundation thalassemia center Peshawar KPK. Donors were physically healthy and fit for donation. Donors with physical disabilities and/or having co-morbid conditions were excluded from the report. METHODS: All the samples were screened for anti-HIV, anti-HCV, HBsAg, Syphilis, and Malarial Parasite via ELISA kit and Immune Chromatographic Technique (ICT), respectively. A total of 6311 blood donations were evaluated. The majority of the donations (92%) were from (VNRBD) voluntary non-remunerated blood donation, while only 8% came from replacement donors. RESULTS: Amongst 6311 blood donations, 1.50 % (n = 95) were infected at least with one pathogen, HBV positive cases were 0.855 % (n = 54), HCV positive cases were 0.316% (n = 20), syphilis positive were 0.30% (n = 19) and MP positive cases were only 0.031% (n = 2). HBV, HCV, syphilis and malaria infections rates were found to be low as compared to the previous data published, while no case was reported for HIV. The study also revealed the distribution pattern of the aforementioned pathogens in blood groups and the Rh type system of the reactive samples. CONCLUSION: The lower reported in our study indicates the awareness among the people of Peshawar about TTIs and their precautions. The prevalence rate that we are reporting is less than previously published articles in the same domain.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Bradykinin-potentiating peptides (BPPs) are snake venom peptides inhibiting the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). ACE plays an important role in the regulation of blood pressure. BPPs lead to the development of ACE inhibitors for the treatment of hypertension. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present work was to carry out a comprehensive comparative study of four synthesised snake venom BPPs in vivo. METHODS: Four synthesised snake venom BPPs were administered to rats via the intraperitoneal route for 15 days at a fixed dose. Lisinopril was used as a comparative standard. Thirty male albino rats were divided into six groups: A, B, C, D, E (lisinopril), and F (control). Group F was maintained as the control group and given only saline. After 15 days, blood samples and tissues were removed for the study of selective biochemical parameters and histomorphometric analysis. Statistical evaluation of all results was also performed. RESULTS: The results indicated that peptide I, with the sequence ZSAPGNEAIPP, was highly toxic and adversely affected all the biochemical and histological parameters studied in this work. Peptide II (ZNWPHPQIPP) and peptide IV (ZQWAQGRAPHPP) showed lower toxicity. None of the BPPs raised the serum creatinine level and exhibited nephroprotective effects. Although lisinopril raised the creatinine level, it showed a protective role towards the pancreas and lungs in parallel. CONCLUSION: The present work shows that although there is a high sequence similarity between the four BPPs, their in vivo activity varies. The sequences of peptide II and peptide IV can be used to improve the design of current ACE inhibitors used for hypertension treatment.

RESUMEN

Large quantities of solid wastes are produced each year in the leather industry. The considerable wastes generated exhibit tremendous application potential in terms of renewable energy sources and functional materials. Among them, animal hair/wool wastes possess high carbon content, which can be used sustainably and efficiently by using pyrolysis. Herein, the pyrolysis process of hair/wool wastes was investigated using TG-IR and Py-GC/MS, while the pyrolysis kinetic and thermodynamic were analyzed using "model-free" methods. The results showed that the hair/wool waste pyrolysis process can be divided into three stages: dehydration, devolatilization, and carbonization. The volatile products were mainly phenols (7.42%) and heterocyclic compounds (21.26%), which can be directly used as bio-energy (bio-gases and bio-oil) or converted to other useful chemical products. The kinetic parameters (Ea and A) calculated using the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose, and Kissinger methods indicated the complexity of the decomposition reactions, which was also confirmed by thermodynamic (ΔH, ΔG, and ΔS) calculation. Some suggestions have also been provided for the preparation of functional biochar with heteroatoms (i.e., N, O, and S) doping. These results not only provide a guide for designing the pyrolysis of hair/wool wastes but can also help develop a potential method to convert the hair/wool wastes into bioenergy to achieve sustainable development of the leather industry.

RESUMEN

Ethyl carbamate (EC) has been associated with the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and depletion of glutathione (GSH), leading to a decline in cell viability. In this study, we found that the cuttlefish collagen hydrolysate (CCH) exhibited high antioxidant activity in scavenging hydroxyl radicals (IC50 = 0.697 mg mL-1), which was also effective in combating EC-induced oxidative damage in liver hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells. The expression of genes related to oxidative stress response could be regulated by CCH to mitigate EC-induced oxidative stress. Pathway analysis confirmed that the protective ability of CCH could be related to ferroptosis and glutathione metabolism. Therefore, CCH could reduce the decline in cell viability by alleviating GSH depletion, and prevent EC-induced oxidative damage. Moreover, protective effect of CCH could be realized by upregulating the heme oxygenase-1 to achieve the preventation of cell sensitization. Considering these effects, CCH has potential for use in food to prevent oxidative stress.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hepcidin and hemochromatosis (HFE) are iron regulatory proteins that are encoded by HAMP and HFE genes. Mutation in either HAMP gene or HFE gene causes Hepcidin protein deficiency that can lead to iron overload in beta thalassemia patients. The aim of this research work was to study the presence of G71D mutation of HAMP gene and H63D mutation of HFE gene in beta thalassemia major and minor group to check the association of these mutations with serum ferritin level of beta thalassemia patients. METHODS: The study was conducted on 42 beta thalassemia major and 20 beta thalassemia minor samples along with 20 control samples. The genotyping of both mutations has done by ARM-PCR technique with specific set of primers. RESULTS: Significant effect of G71D and H63D mutations was observed on serum ferritin level of thalassemia major group. The risk allele of HAMP G71D and HFE H63D was found with high frequency (48% and 49%, respectively) in beta thalassemia major than in control group. High genotypic frequency of HAMP and HFE gene mutation gene mutation was observed in beta thalassemia major than beta thalassemia minor and control group (7% and 9%, respectively). CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that both HAMP and HFE gene mutations show high frequency in beta thalassemia major patients and mean significant association between mutations and high serum ferritin level of beta thalassemia major patients but the nonsignificant results of Odd ratios showed that both mutations do not act as major risk factor in beta thalassemia major.

RESUMEN

In the leather industry, considerable amounts of non-recyclable solid leather wastes (SLWs) are produced and accumulated in factories. In this work, the non-isothermal thermochemical analysis (TGA) test was used to analyse the thermal degradation behaviour of chromium-tanned leather shaving, which is one of the main SLWs. The pyrolysis experiments were carried out under nitrogen atmosphere from 30 to 800 °C at different heating rates of 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C/min. Three different kinetic models, including the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO), Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) and Kissinger methods, were used to calculate the kinetic parameters. The activation energy values calculated by FWO and KAS methods were 391.79 and 348.77 kJ/mol, respectively. In consideration of the high HHV (14.15 MJ/kg) and carbon productivity (10.15%), SLWs could represent a potential candidate material for bioenergy production and carbon preparation. These results could be used for the design of thermochemical conversion processes utilizing SLWs as feedstock.

RESUMEN

Quantum superdense coding enables a sender to encode a two-bit classical message in one qubit using the preshared entanglement. In this paper, we develop a superdense coding protocol using a dual quantum Zeno (DQZ) gate to take the full advantage of quantum superdense coding from the complete Bell-state analysis. We verify that the DQZ gate allows remote parties to achieve the distinguishability of orthonormal Bell states in a semi-counterfactual manner and the DQZ superdense coding achieves high throughput efficiency as a function of cycle numbers for the Bell-state analyzer.

RESUMEN

To date, many researchers have developed active components that are derived from seafood processing for the purposes of healthcare. Here, an antioxidant collagen peptide was obtained from skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) bone by using a combination of trypsin and chymotrypsin as the catalyst. The amino acid sequence of the peptide was identified as Ser-Ser-Gly-Pro-Pro-Val-Pro-Gly-Pro-Met-Gly-Pro-Met-Gly-Pro-Arg (SSGPPVPGPMGPMGPR) by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF-MS) analysis. We found that the as-prepared collagen peptide can efficiently scavenge DPPH radical (IC50 3.149 mM), superoxide anion radical (IC50 3.803 mM) and ABTS radical (IC50 9.489 mM). In addition, it has been found that the methionine (Met) residue in the collagen peptide could provide a precise active site during the scavenging of DPPH radicals by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry analysis. These results suggest that the peptide can find wide uses in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

RESUMEN

The Bell-state analysis to distinguish between the four maximally entangled Bell states requires the joint measurement on entangled particles. However, spatially separated parties cannot perform the joint measurement. In this paper, we present a counterfactual Bell-state analysis based on the chained quantum Zeno effect. This counterfactual analysis not only enables us to perform a complete Bell-state analysis, but also enables spatially separated parties to distinguish between the four Bell states without transmitting any physical particle over the channel.
