RESUMEN

The association of haptoglobin (Hp) with various cancers has been reported and also it has been documented that the Hp phenotypes/genotypes have different functional ability. So, we examined phenotypes/genotypes of Hp in newly diagnosed, untreated non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) patients and investigated its prognostic value for risk stratification of the cancer. In eighty NMIBC patients and 80 healthy individuals the Hp genotypes and phenotypes were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2D-GE), respectively. Besides, the presence of the Hpα1, α2, and ß chains in the sera was confirmed by Mass Spectrometry (MS). The frequencies of the 1-1 and 2-2 genotypes/phenotypes were respectively higher and lower in healthy subjects compared to the patients. Our results revealed that the 2-2 genotype/phenotype could increase the risk of NMIBC. There was a positive association between the 2-2 genotype/phenotype with the T category/grade of cancer (p<0.05). The present study implied a strong association between the Hp phenotypes and genotypes with NMIBC. It was found that the 2-2 genotype and phenotype could be a risk factor for NMIBC incidence, as well as, progression. This study introduced Hp genotyping as a possible cost-effective and precise method for prognosis of individuals at the risk of NMIBC.

RESUMEN

The presence of inflammatory cells and their products in the tumor microenvironment plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of a tumor. Releasing the cytokines from a host in response to infection and inflammation can inhibit tumor growth and progression. However, tumor cells can also respond to the host cytokines with increasing the growth/invasion/metastasis. Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancers in the world. The microenvironment of a bladder tumor has been indicated to be rich in growth factors/inflammatory cytokines that can induce the tumor growth/progression and also suppress the immune system. On the contrary, modulate of the cancer progression has been shown following upregulation of the cytokines-related pathways that suggested the cytokines as potential therapeutic targets. In this study, we provide a summary of cytokines that are involved in BC formation/regression with both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties. A more accurate understanding of tumor microenvironment creates favorable conditions for cytokines targeting to treat BC.

RESUMEN

The ever-increasing use of silver nanoparticles (nAg) in various products necessitates investigation of the behavior of biological systems encountering these particles. In this paper, considering maize as a biological model, the effects of colloidal nAg (<80nm) on its cell culture were investigated. For comparison purposes, silver nitrate was used as a representative of silver ion (Ag+). After stabilization of cell suspensions, they were treated with nAg and Ag+ (1 mg/l), then cell suspension growth was measured and the microscopic analysis and a cell viability test were performed. In addition, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme was explored. Owing to the key role of retinoblastoma-related protein (RBR) in cell cycle as well as in development and differentiation processes, the relative expression of ZmRBR1 was studied in nAg and Ag+ exposure. Microscopic analyses revealed that cells in suspensions treated by nAg and Ag+ were morphologically classified into five types: embryogenic; larvae-like; long; swollen; and polarized. The results showed an increase in percentages of large and live cells in the treated suspensions. Remarkably, we observed some cells which were differentiated into trichomes along with some stages of trichome development in the treated cell suspensions. Moreover, exposure to nAg and Ag+ did not elevate the activity of SOD enzyme in the treated cells. Also, the relative expression of ZmRBR1 was slightly reduced in the treated cells. The findings of these experimentations indicated that nAg affected maize suspension-cultured cells in the same manner as Ag+.

RESUMEN

Following the marked increase of perylene concentration in southern coast of Caspian Sea, waterbird eggs were used as biomonitoring agents. Surface sediments and eggs of five bird species were collected from colonies in Anzali Wetland in the above coast for perylene analysis. The perylene concentrations in sediment and egg samples ranged within 70.6-204.4 and 25.5-43.2 ng/g dw, respectively. Diagnostic perylene ratios showed that the perylene found in all samples was of biogenic origin, possibly developing from terrestrial materials. The combination pattern of perylene was found to be similar in all samples. Conclusively, perylene observed in the area was transmitted from sediments in breeding areas into the eggs, so the eggs are biomonitoring agents and the prevalence of oxic conditions in surface sediments limits formation of perylene, reflecting perylene formation in the catchment area. We found that perylene distribution in surface sediments follows irregular patterns, representing significant effects from local inputs.
