RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to assess the nutritional status and measurement of body composition of basketball players from four teams of Valencia, three of them belonging to First National League and one belonging to the EBA League, in order to establish adequate dietary guidelines and anthropometric ideals. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This is a study whose sample includes 17 men and 15 women. They were measured using the ISAK criteria, while intake was assessed by 3-days 24-hours food questionnaire. RESULTS: Significant differences (p <0.05) were found in men by playing position in relaxed and flexed arm perimeters between centers and forwards, and height between guards and forwards, and guards and centers. Whereas in women there were significant differences (p <0.05) in the wrist of guards and shooting guards, and shooting guards and forwards, also in the femur of shooting guards and center and height between guards and centers, and guards and shooting guards. No significant differences were found for somatotype. Statistically significant differences in the iron and fiber consumption between men and women were found. There were also statistically significant differences in fluid intake and training session time. Dietary intake was characterized by high fat and carbohydrates and protein moderate, with deficits in vitamin A, D, folic acid, calcium, zinc and magnesium for both genders. Women showed a specific deficit in iron. Furthermore, only 17.6% of men and 6.7% of women drank isotonic drinks during high intensity training, so the remaining players could worsen performance. CONCLUSION: In order to enhance performance, a balanced diet which meets the physiological demands of the game could overcome these deficits

RESUMEN

Interferometry sensors are frequently analyzed by applying the Fourier transform because the transformation separates all frequency components of its signal, making its study on a complex plane feasible. In this work, we study the relation between the optical path difference (OPD) and poles location theoretically and experimentally, using the Laplace transform and a pole-zero map. Theory and experiments are in concordance. For our study, only the cosine function was considered, which is filtered from the interference pattern. In experimental work, two unperturbed low-finesse Fabry-Pérot interferometers were used. First, a Fabry-Pérot interferometer that has a cavity length of ~1.6 mm was used. Its optical path difference was 2.33 mm and the poles were localized at points ±i12. rad/nm. Secondly, a Fabry-Pérot interferometer with a cavity length of ~5.2 mm was used, and its optical path difference was 7.59 mm and the poles were localized at points ±i40.4 rad/nm. Experimental results confirmed the theoretical analysis. Our proposal finds practical application for interferometer analysis, signal processing of optical fiber sensors, communication system analysis, and multiplexing systems based on interferometers.

Objective: To determine factor associated with non compliance with Pap smear timely screening for the early detection of cervical cancer. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that was performed in women between 21 and 29 years of age seen at a Health Care Center. Sociodemographic variables were assessed, as well as their perceptions on cervical cancer and non-compliance with the Pap smear test (not having the test performed for the last 3 years). Results: One-hundred and thirty women aged 25.4 ± 2.9 years of age were assessed, and 53.8% did not comply with Pap smear testing. Factors associated with non compliance were as follows: perception for susceptibility for developing cervical cancer (odds ratio [OR]= 0.15; 95% IC: 0.04-0.49; p= 0.002), perception of barriers for having Pap smear test performed (OR= 3.95; 95% CI: 1.34-11.60; p= 0.013), and perceptions on having a Pap smear test performed (OR: 9.22; 95% CI: 2.78-30.51; p<0.001). Conclusions: There is high prevalence of non-compliance with Pap smear testing, being this associated with perceptions about cervical cancer.

RESUMEN

In civil engineering quasi-distributed optical fiber sensors are used for reinforced concrete monitoring, precast concrete monitoring, temperature monitoring, strain monitoring and temperature/strain monitoring. These quasi-distributed sensors necessarily apply some multiplexing technique. However, on many occasions, two or more multiplexing techniques are combined to increase the number of local sensors and then the cost of each sensing point is reduced. In this work, a signal analysis and a new signal demodulation algorithm are reported for a quasi-distributed optic fiber sensor system based on Frequency Division Multiplexing/Wavelength Division Multiplexing (FDM/WDM) and low-precision Fabry-Pérot interferometers. The mathematical analysis and the new algorithm optimize its design, its implementation, improve its functionality and reduce the cost per sensing point. The analysis was corroborated by simulating a quasi-distributed sensor in operation. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are in concordance. The optimization considers multiplexing techniques, signal demodulation, physical parameters, system noise, instrumentation, and detection technique. Based on our analysis and previous results reported, the optical sensing system can have more than 4000 local sensors and it has practical applications in civil engineering.

RESUMEN

Public-key cryptography is too slow for general purpose encryption, with most applications limiting its use as much as possible. Some secure protocols, especially those that enable forward secrecy, make a much heavier use of public-key cryptography, increasing the demand for lightweight cryptosystems that can be implemented in low powered or mobile devices. This performance requirements are even more significant in critical infrastructure and emergency scenarios where peer-to-peer networks are deployed for increased availability and resiliency. We benchmark several public-key key-exchange algorithms, determining those that are better for the requirements of critical infrastructure and emergency applications and propose a security framework based on these algorithms and study its application to decentralized node or sensor networks.

RESUMEN

The application of the sensor optical fibers in the areas of scientific instrumentation and industrial instrumentation is very attractive due to its numerous advantages. In the industry of civil engineering for example, quasi-distributed sensors made with optical fiber are used for reliable strain and temperature measurements. Here, a quasi-distributed sensor in the frequency domain is discussed. The sensor consists of a series of low-finesse Fabry-Perot interferometers where each Fabry-Perot interferometer acts as a local sensor. Fabry-Perot interferometers are formed by pairs of identical low reflective Bragg gratings imprinted in a single mode fiber. All interferometer sensors have different cavity length, provoking frequency-domain multiplexing. The optical signal represents the superposition of all interference patterns which can be decomposed using the Fourier transform. The frequency spectrum was analyzed and sensor's properties were defined. Following that, a quasi-distributed sensor was numerically simulated. Our sensor simulation considers sensor properties, signal processing, noise system, and instrumentation. The numerical results show the behavior of resolution vs. signal-to-noise ratio. From our results, the Fabry-Perot sensor has high resolution and low resolution. Both resolutions are conceivable because the Fourier Domain Phase Analysis (FDPA) algorithm elaborates two evaluations of Bragg wavelength shift.

Background: Pompe disease (PD) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by a deficiency in the lysosomal human enzyme α-alglucosidase. Among children (early onset), PD causes cardiomyopathy, whereas late-onset disease seems unrelated to a high rate of cardiomyopathy. Patients respond less to enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with α-alglucosidase. Case report: This is the case of an 8-year-old female patient with symptom onset at 3 years of age (late onset) with recurrent respiratory infections and progressive muscular weakness. Diagnosis for Pompe disease (PD) was established due to evidence from muscle biopsy. At baseline, a right lobectomy was performed for bronchiectasis and necrosis. The patient developed pneumonia and received mechanical respiratory support (CPAP) for 4 weeks with absolute dependence on oxygen and BPAP. ERT with α-alglucosidase was given. Conclusions: This patient's positive output and remarkable effects on cardiovascular and respiratory function suggest that ERT may reduce cardiomyopathy among late-onset PD patients.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: We report one case of unilateral epididymo-orchitis secondary to Brucella and perform a bibliographic review. METHODS: We report the case of a 5 1-year-old male with fever, predominantly in the evening hours, over one month associated with a subacute inflammatory process on the right testicle and osteoarticular pain on the left ribs. RESULTS: Treatment was performed with rifampicin 600 mg/day for 45 days and doxicilin 100 mg/12 hours for 45 days. CONCLUSIONS: The brucellar etiology should be taken into consideration in front of an epididymo- orchitis with torpid outcome, mainly in areas of endemic Brucella and patients that have had contact with cattle or non controlled milk derivatives. We emphasize that contact could have been several months before the appearance of clinical epididymoorchitis.
