BACKGROUND: Allergic disease affects up to 40% of the global adult population, a proportion that is increasing with environmental changes related to global warming. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review of the literature to identify and evaluate the current evidence of the impact of climate change-related environmental factors on the allergen production and the epidemiology and severity of allergic pathologies. PECO criteria were established and guided the literature searches of the PubMed and Cochrane databases (Jan 1, 2016 to Dec 31, 2021). Study outcomes were categorized and grouped to facilitate data synthesis. Outcomes were classified as significant (statistical significance <0.05), non-significant (p>0.05) or undetermined (p value not reported). Study quality was assessed using MMAT analysis. RESULTS: Of 195 studies, 40 were considered relevant and 9 of them provided data to be included in the data quantitative synthesis. Environmental factors, including the presence of pollutants, temperature, and drought, influenced the type, volume, and timing of exposure to local aeroallergens. The most relevant environmental factor was the presence of environmental pollutants, of which tropospheric ozone was the most frequently associated to changes in allergen production, prevalence, and severity of allergic disease. Also, several publications demonstrated the impact of environmental factors on the healthcare burden. CONCLUSIONS: Climate-change related environmental factors increased allergic disease in terms of prevalence, severity, and healthcare burden due to alterations in allergen exposure (volume and type) with the presence of pollutants such as ozone being the most commonly reported driver of such increase.

The mutualistic relationship between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi is essential for optimal plant nutrition, enabling plants to better withstand biotic and abiotic stressors and enhancing survival, reproduction, and colonization of new environments. Activities, such as soil enrichment or compaction, may decrease the benefits of AM fungi for plants, potentially reducing interactions in urban environments. Here, we examine this prediction by studying how urbanization alters AM interactions with the invasive herb Ruellia nudiflora (Acanthaceae). We collected soil and plants from deep urban sites (DUS; e.g., sidewalks), open urban sites (OUS; parks), and rural sites (RS) to analyse soil nutrient content, plant morphology, AM colonization rates, spore density, richness, and diversity. Contrary to predicted, DUS had the lowest soil nutrient concentration, except for phosphorus, reducing AM colonization. This supports the prediction of reduced AM interactions in urban environments. We also found that potassium affects the AM association. Urban plants had smaller and more compact root systems compared to their rural counterparts, but there were no discernible differences in AM fungi communities between urban and rural environments. Phosphorus enrichment in sidewalks is the main driver of reductionof R. nudiflora-AM fungi interactions in Mérida. More studies are needed to gain a better understanding of how AM fungi contribute to plant colonization in urban environments.

Lycopene cyclases (LCYs) are a key branching point in regulating the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway in plants. Bixa orellana L. is characterized by the presence in its seed of bixin, an apocarotenoid of significant importance in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Gene analysis provides the opportunity to investigate the LCY gene structure in plant species and its relationship with the synthesis of carotenoids. Coding sequences of the LCY genes were retrieved from a B. orellana genome DNA. Boß-LCY1 and Boß-LCY2 genes exhibit 100% of identity to their respective cDNA accessions, and exhibit a single coding region of 1512 bp (504 aa) and 1495 bp (498 aa), respectively. In contrast, Boε-LCY gene shows a coding region of 1581 bp (527 aa) with 10 introns of diverse lengths. Putative Transcription Factors (TFs) binding sites were upstream (3000 bp) identified for each LCY gene. TFs cover two groups, one with the categories of photosynthesis, reproduction, and oxidative processes that are frequent. The second one with the categories of defense, cell cycle, signaling, and carbohydrate metabolism, which are poorly represented. Besides, repetitive DNA elements showed motifs and proteins related to LTR from the Ty3/Gypsy family, were associated with the TFs regions. In general, TFs vary in the different BoLCY genes, being more abundant in the Boε-LCY gene. LCY expression analyzed from a transcriptome database, and validated by RT-qPCR, shows an upregulation of the three LCYs, mainly oriented to the synthesis of essential carotenoids in photosynthetic tissues (leaves), as well as an upregulation of the Boß-LCY2 gene in the non-photosynthetic tissues (firsts seed development stages) related to the bixin accumulation. OBJECTIVE: To assess how inaccurately the body mass index (BMI) is used to diagnose obesity compared to body fat percentage (BF%) measurement and to compare the cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents with or without obesity according to BMI but with a similar BF%. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional investigation was conducted including 553 (378 females/175 males) white children and adolescents aged 6-17 years, 197 with normal weight (NW), 144 with overweight (OW) and 212 with obesity (OB) according to BMI. In addition to BMI, BF% measured by air displacement plethysmography, as well as markers of cardiometabolic risk had been determined in the existing cohort. RESULTS: We found that 7% of subjects considered as NW and 62% of children and adolescents classified as OW according to BMI presented a BF% within the obesity range. Children and adolescents without obesity by the BMI criterion but with obesity by BF% exhibited higher blood pressure and C-reactive protein (CRP) in boys, and higher blood pressure, glucose, uric acid, CRP and white blood cells count, as well as reduced HDL-cholesterol, in girls, similar to those with obesity by BMI and BF%. Importantly, both groups of subjects with obesity by BF% showed a similarly altered glucose homeostasis after an OGTT as compared to their NW counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: Results from the present study suggest increased cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents without obesity according to BMI but with obesity based on BF%. Being aware of the difficulty in determining body composition in everyday clinical practice, our data show that its inclusion could yield clinically useful information both for the diagnosis and treatment of overweight and obesity.

In the 1960s, the Quintero industrial complex was inaugurated in Chile. This began a history of dramatic anthropogenic impacts on the Chilean coast. Among the known, we could mention high atmospheric emissions of chemicals due to combustion processes and frequent oil spills. For this reason, we surveyed the concentrations of fifteen EPAPAHs in the surface coastal waters of the Quintero Bay area in 2015. The levels found are in the range of the highest levels when reviewing the literature (0.97 µg L-1 up to 9.84 µg L-1). The highest levels were found in the vicinity of the industrial complex and decreased in the other two zones. The concentration of individual compounds significantly exceeds the levels recommended by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the EU water framework directive (WFD). The risk estimations revealed that PAH concentrations represent high-risk for wildlife. Molecular ratios of PAHs were used to identify the possible sources, being these were mainly of pyrogenic origin, agreeing with an origin in the combustion of wood, coal, grass, and fossil fuels. This study contributes to the first data for surface water in a country's highly impacted industrial coastal area.

Nevertheless, the choice of device and appropriate therapy should meet the clinical needs and the characteristics of the patient. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to estimate the impact of pMDIs prescribed for any indication on annual CO2 emissions in Spain.The secondary objective was to evaluate the potential impact of switching pMDIs to dry-powder inhalers (DPIs) in patients with asthma. METHODS: A systematic review of the evidence published during 2010-2021 was carried out. Average annual CO2 emissions of DPIs and pMDIs were calculated in 2 scenarios: the current situation and a hypothetical situation involving a switch from all pMDIs to DPIs. The impact of the switch on clinical outcomes was also evaluated. RESULTS: The total value of CO2-eq/year due to DPIs and pMDIs accounted for 0.0056% and 0.0909%, respectively, of total emissions in Spain. In the event of switching pMDIs to DPIs, except those used for rescue medication, the percentages were 0.0076% and 0.0579%. The evaluation of efficacy, handling, satisfaction, safety, and use of health care resources was not conclusive. CONCLUSIONS: Current CO2 emissions by pMDIs account for a small percentage of the total CO2 footprint in Spain. Nevertheless, there is a need for research into new and more sustainable devices. Suitability and patient clinical criteria such as age and inspiratory flow should be prioritized when prescribing an inhaler.

BACKGROUND: The brainstem, situated in the posterior fossa, connects the brain to the spinal cord. Owing to its location, the nerves of the brainstem are closely related with vascular structures. OBJECTIVES: To correlate the finding of vascular loops in the cerebellopontine angle on imaging with symptoms indicative of vestibulocochlear involvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study included all patients evaluated between 2011 and 2017 with findings suggestive of vascular loops in the cerebellopontine angle for whom the clinical history and imaging studies were available. RESULTS: A total of 102 patients (63 women and 39 men) had vestibulocochlear involvement. The most common clinical indication was dizziness (41.18%). A unilateral vascular loop was found in 43 patients (right: 21.57%, left: 20.59%) and bilateral loops were found in 59 (57.84%) patients. The most common type of vascular loop was type II (right: 69.14%; left: 58.75%). The most common origin of vascular loops was the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (right: 66.67%, left: 65.00%). No associations were observed between vascular loops and sensorineural hearing, nystagmus, or vertigo. There was an association with tinnitus. CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE: The presence of vascular loops is not associated with most auditory symptoms. Nevertheless, all findings on imaging studies must be reported. The interpretation of the findings of imaging studies must be correlated with the clinical symptoms after other more common causes that can explain the symptoms have been ruled out.

Antecedentes: El tronco encefálico, situado en la fosa posterior, conecta el cerebro con la médula espinal. Debido a su ubicación, sus componentes nerviosos guardan una estrecha relación con estructuras vasculares. Objetivos: Describir una relación clínico-radiológica del asa vascular del ángulo pontocerebeloso en pacientes con síntomas indicativos de afectación vestibulococlear mediante evaluación por neuroimagen. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo y descriptivo. Se incluyeron todos los pacientes evaluados entre 2011 y 2017 con indicios de asa vascular del ángulo pontocerebeloso e historial clínico y estudios de diagnóstico por imagen disponibles. Resultados: 102 pacientes (63 mujeres y 39 hombres) presentaban afectación vestibulococlear. La indicación clínica más frecuente fue mareos (41,18%). Se halló asa vascular unilateral en 43 pacientes (derecho: 21,57%, izquierdo: 20,59%) y bilateral en 59 pacientes (57,84%). El tipo de asa vascular más frecuente fue el tipo II (derecho: 69,14%; izquierdo: 58,75%). El origen más frecuente fue la arteria cerebelosa anteroinferior (ACAI) (derecha: 66,67%, izquierda: 65,00%). No se observó ninguna asociación entre asas vasculares y pérdida de audición neurosensitiva, nistagmo o vértigo. Se halló una asociación con acúfenos. Conclusiones y significación: La presencia de asas vasculares no se asocia a la mayoría de los síntomas auditivos. No obstante, deben notificarse todos los hallazgos de los estudios por imagen. La interpretación de los hallazgos de los estudios por imagen debe correlacionarse con los síntomas clínicos después de excluir otras causas más frecuentes que puedan explicar la sintomatología.(AU)

The goal of the present study was to propose a set of preliminary regional diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for pediatric interventional cardiology (IC) procedures in Latin America and the Caribbean countries, classified by age and weight groups. The study was conducted in the framework of the Optimization of Protection in Pediatric Interventional Radiology in Latin America and the Caribbean program coordinated by the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The first step of the program was focused on pediatric IC. Dose data from diagnostic and therapeutic procedures were collected between December 2020 and December 2021. Regional DRLs were set as the third quartile of patient dose data (kerma area product) collected in 18 hospitals from 10 countries in an initial sample of 968 procedures. DRLs were set for four age bands and five weight ranges. The values obtained for the four age bands (<1 yr, 1 to <5 yr, 5 to <10 yr and 10 to <16 yr) were 2.9, 6.1, 8.8 and 14.4 Gy cm2for diagnostic procedures, and 4.0, 5.0, 10.0 and 38.1 Gy cm2for therapeutic procedures, respectively. The values obtained for the five weight bands (<5 kg, 5 to <15 kg, 15 to <30 kg, 30 to <50 kg and 50 to <80 kg) were 3.0, 4.5, 8.1, 9.2 and 26.8 Gy cm2for diagnostic procedures and 3.7, 4,3, 7.3, 16.1 and 53.4 Gy cm2for therapeutic procedures, respectively. While initial data were collected manually as patient dose management systems (DMSs) were not available in most of the hospitals involved in the program, a centralized automatic DMS for the collection and management of patient dose indicators has now been introduced and is envisaged to increase the sample size. The possibility of alerting on high dose values and introducing corrective actions will help in optimization.

INTRODUCCIÓN: la adherencia al tratamiento crónico inhalado es menor del 50 % en pacientes con patologías crónicas respiratorias como el asma y la EPOC. El farmacéutico comunitario (FC) por su formación y accesibilidad, es un profesional sanitario adecuado para el seguimiento del paciente crónico respiratorio. Es capaz de educar y aconsejar sobre el manejo de inhaladores (técnica de inhalación) y comprobar el uso de estos, además de apoyar y vigilar los síntomas en caso de aparecer exacerbaciones y dar consejos de estilo de vida en general para mejorar la salud. Asimismo, las intervenciones del FC sobre el uso correcto de los inhaladores han mostrado mejoras en la adherencia de los pacientes.OBJETIVOS: se realizó una campaña sanitaria en paciente asmático adulto para: 1) Conocer la técnica inhalatoria de los pacientes. 2) Intervenir sobre la técnica inhalatoria3) Determinar el grado de adherencia a la terapia inhalada y el tipo de paciente no adherente.4) Intervenir de forma multidisciplinar.MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: se realizó una sesión online en abril de 2021 para personal de los centros de salud (médicos de familia, enfermería) y FC del área de los hospitales Peset y La Fé en Valencia, y del área de los hospitales Reina Sofía y Santa Lucía en Murcia. Se dio una formación específica de fisiopatología y tratamiento del asma por parte del médico de familia y una parte de abordaje de la adherencia en paciente crónico respiratorio desde la farmacia comunitaria por parte del FC.S e planteó una captación de pacientes por parte del FC desde el 15 de abril al 30 de junio, generando un informe que se daba al paciente para su entrega en el centro de salud. Toda esta información se registró mediante el SEFAC e_XPERT www.SEFACexpert.org, recogiendo el consentimiento informado del paciente para el registro de los datos. (AU)

Fruit morphology and dehiscence-related genes were analyzed in dehiscent N4P and dehiscent P12 Bixa orellana accessions. Fruit architecture (exocarp and pericarp cells, trichomes, vascular bundles, vesicles, and bixin cells) documented by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphology, blue toluidine stain, and phloroglucinol and hydrochloric acid (PHCL) stain was similar in both accessions. Although, the dehiscent zone (DZ) was higher in the indehiscent P12 B. orellana accession, lignification values, obtained by phloroglucinol and hydrochloric acid stain, within the DZ remain was similar in both variants being lower at 34 days after floral anthesis in the dehiscent N4P B. orellana accession. Dehiscence-related genes APETALA (AP2), SHATTERPROOF (SHP), and SPATULA (SPT) were identified on the reported B. orellana transcriptome (SRX1117606). Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction primers build by using these genes allow observing a differential expression during six fruit development stages. In both B. orellana accessions, the AP2 transcripts have a reduced expression, whereas the SHP transcripts were significantly higher during the first two days and ten days of development. SPT transcripts show an expression differential between both accessions being significantly higher in the dehiscent N4P, peaking with 9.66% at 42 days after floral anthesis (DAFA) of development. SPT transcription profile suggested that this gene has an important role during the fruit opening in the dehiscent N4P B. orellana accession. ABSTRACT In this study we evaluated the inclusion of chemical silage from red tilapia viscera (Oreochromis sp.) in diets for ISA Brown line laying hens (Gallus gallus domesticus) and its influence on nutritional parameters and egg quality. A total of 56 16-week-old laying hens were randomly divided into two groups (one per diet), which in turn were subdivided into 7 groups, each with 4 birds. Eggs were collected during the first 13 weeks of laying. During this period the egg quality parameters were evaluated until week 11; the bromatological characterization of the egg was carried out in the 2nd and 4th week of laying. The results indicated that the inclusion of chemical silage in 17,18% dry matter does not result in statistically significant differences in egg quality parameters or in their bromatological composition, with respect to the control. This led to the conclusion that chemical silage can be used as an alternative to protein inputs such as fish meal and soybean cake in the diet of laying hens, without modifying the quality of the final product.


RESUMEN En este trabajo se evaluó la inclusion de ensilado químico de vísceras de tilapia roja (Oreochromis sp.) en dietas para gallinas ponedoras (Gallus gallus domesticus) de la raza Isa-Brown, y su influencia sobre parámetros nutricionales y la calidad del huevo. Se utilizó un total de 56 gallinas ponedoras de 16 semanas de edad divididas al azar en dos grupos (uno por dieta), los cuales a su vez se subdividieron en 7 grupos de 4 aves cada uno. Se les recolectó huevos durante las primeras 13 semanas de postura. Durante este periodo se realizó la evaluación de los parámetros de calidad del huevo hasta la semana 11. La caracterización bromatológica del huevo se realizo en las semanas 2 y 4, luego de haber sido puestos. Los resultados indicaron que la inclusion de ensilado químico en un 17,18% materia seca, no genera diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p < 0,05) en los parámetros de calidad del huevo ni en su composición bromatológica, con respecto al control. Esto permitió concluir que el ensilado químico puede ser usado como alternativa a insumos proteicos como harina de pescado y torta de soya en la alimentación de gallinas ponedoras, sin modificar la calidad del producto final.

RESUMEN

We propose a modified mathematical model of the quasispecies type to analyze an unstable tumor progression evolution. In our study, we consider a heterogeneous population with different individuals, generated by the accumulation of successive mutations. Our model's main feature is that it allows for variable growth rates for each subpopulation and takes into account mutations from nonconsecutive types of mutants. Bifurcations and linear stability of the steady states are analyzed. We focus on two equilibria; one of them implies the coexistence of anomalous growth and genetically unstable cells. The other one yields the dominance of the anomalous growth population and the extinction of the malignant cells. However, linear stability analysis of the second equilibrium is inconclusive and suggests a suitable environment for the study of periodic therapy. This is carried out by introducing a small perturbation modeling the effect of a periodic medical treatment. As a result, a Zero-Hopf periodic orbit is identified, showing a cyclic behavior among the populations, with a strong dominance of the parental anomalous growth cell population.

Over millennia, human intervention has transformed European habitats mainly through extensive livestock grazing. "Dehesas/Montados" are an Iberian savannah-like ecosystem dominated by oak-trees, bushes and grass species that are subject to agricultural and extensive livestock uses. They are a good example of how large-scale, low intensive transformations can maintain high biodiversity levels as well as socio-economic and cultural values. However, the role that these human-modified habitats can play for individuals or species living beyond their borders is unknown. Here, using a dataset of 106 adult GPS-tagged Eurasian griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) monitored over seven years, we show how individuals breeding in western European populations from Northern, Central, and Southern Spain, and Southern France made long-range forays (LRFs) of up to 800 km to converge in the threatened Iberian "dehesas" to forage. There, extensive livestock and wild ungulates provide large amounts of carcasses, which are available to scavengers from traditional exploitations and rewilding processes. Our results highlight that maintaining Iberian "dehesas" is critical not only for local biodiversity but also for long-term conservation and the ecosystem services provided by avian scavengers across the continent.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a worldwide public health problem characterized by fat tissue accumulation, favouring adipose tissue and metabolic alterations. Increasing energy expenditure (EE) through brown adipose tissue activation and white adipose tissue (WAT) browning has gained relevance as a therapeutic approach. Different bioactive compounds, such as n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), have been shown to induce those thermogenic effects. This process is regulated by the gut microbiota as well. Nevertheless, obesity is characterized by gut microbiota dysbiosis, which can be restored by weight loss and n-3 PUFA intake, among other factors. Knowledge gap: However, the role of the gut microbiota on the n-3 PUFA effect in inducing thermogenesis in obesity has not been fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to elucidate the potential implications of this interrelation on WAT browning adiposw sittue (BAT), BAT activity, and EE regulation in obesity models.

Mujer de 32 años con antecedente de miomatosis uterina y metrorragias a repetición durante seis meses que condicionan una concentración de hemoglobina de 6,5 g/dL con requerimiento de transfusión de eritrocitos. Presentó una hora postransfusión, pérdida visual súbita e indolora del ojo derecho (OD) sin otra sintomatología, siendo remitida al departamento de Neuro-oftalmología. Al ingreso su agudeza visual corregida fue movimiento de manos en OD y 0,6 en el izquierdo (OI). El segmento anterior fue normal, salvo un defecto pupilar aferente relativo en OD. Funduscópicamente el OD resaltó una retina pálida difusa con mancha rojo cereza, compatible con oclusión de la arteria central de la retina, OI normal. Se intentó manejo sin mejoría. Los estudios oculares corroboraron isquemia retiniana en OD. Durante la evaluación sistémica los estudios de neuroimágenes, paneles autoinmunes y hematológicos fueron negativos, por lo que se atribuyó dicha complicación a la transfusión de glóbulos rojos (AU)

In children and adolescents, obesity does not seem to depend on a reduction of resting energy expenditure (REE). Moreover, in this young population, the interactions between either age and obesity or between age and gender, or the role of leptin on REE are not clearly understood. To compare the levels of REE in children and adolescents we studied 181 Caucasian individuals (62% girls) classified on the basis of age- and sex-specific body mass index (BMI) percentile as healthy weight (n = 50), with overweight (n = 34), or with obesity (n = 97) and in different age groups: 8-10 (n = 38), 11-13 (n = 50), and 14-17 years (n = 93). REE was measured by indirect calorimetry and body composition by air displacement plethysmography. Statistically significant differences in REE/fat-free mass (FFM) regarding obesity or gender were not observed. Absolute REE increases with age (p < 0.001), but REE/FFM decreases (p < 0.001) and there is an interaction between gender and age (p < 0.001) on absolute REE showing that the age-related increase is more marked in boys than in girls, in line with a higher FFM. Interestingly, the effect of obesity on absolute REE is not observed in the 8-10 year-old group, in which serum leptin concentrations correlate with the REE/FFM (r = 0.48; p = 0.011). In conclusion, REE/FFM is not affected by obesity or gender, while the effect of age on absolute REE is gender-dependent and leptin may influence the REE/FFM in 8-10 year-olds.

Thermal spray technology, which involves the Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS), encompasses a category of coating processes that supply surface properties to protect or improve the performance of a substrate or component. The coating produced by this technology is built by overlapped splats, whose morphology determines the coating properties. In the same way, the splats obtained in a separated distribution by interposing a perforated mask but using the same thermal spray parameters, has a relationship with the overlapped splats inside the coating. The samples with isolated splats have the advantage of being faster and cheaper to generate and analyse. This article analyses alumina plasma-sprayed splats on steel substrates by image processing techniques, which recognize individual splats and their corresponding morphology (doughnut and pancake) parameters. These parameters allow the user to efficiently classify the splats. After that classification, a quality control can be implemented by comparison between the original and checked sample of isolated splats and a new sample obtained during a small interruption in the normal operation. Additionally, these parameters obtained in an automated way can be used to evaluate the effect of different selections of spraying process parameters.
