RESUMEN

The global food system must meet the increasing demand for food, fiber, and energy while reducing environmental impacts. The UN Food System Summit (UNFSS) has made a clear call to action for a global food systems transformation. We argue that three major discrepancies remain, potentially delaying the urgent implementation of the call to action. First, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are not sufficiently focused on agriculture, leading to funding allocation issues. Second, a mismatch of agroecology with technology innovations may slow scaling agroecological farming. Lastly, agricultural diversification must move beyond organic landscapes and into conventional agriculture. As a solution, principles of NbS should be clear on agricultural integration. Moreover, stakeholder awareness must increase that agroecology does not necessarily conflict with agricultural technologies. Future agricultural models must apply measures such as agricultural diversification in conjunction with technology innovations to then ascertain an overall timely and successful implementation of the UNFSS call to action.

RESUMEN

Soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution is a major concern due to its negative impact on soil quality around the world. In China, accurate data on soil PAHs and information on the relationship with anthropogenic activities are limited. In this study, about 30,800 samples from 1833 soil sample sites were reviewed from 306 published reports to build a soil PAHs database. Based on the data obtained, the results demonstrated that 24.11% of surface soils in China are heavily contaminated. Meanwhile, the concentration of soil PAHs varied, in the order of independent mining and industrial areas (IMIA) > urban areas > suburban areas > rural areas, and the spatial distribution in China demonstrated a descending trend from north to south. Moreover, the characteristic ratio and PCA-MLR (principal component analysis-multiple linear regression) analysis demonstrated that coal combustion and vehicular exhaust emissions were the main sources of soil PAH pollution in China. On the other hand, provincial total Σ16PAHs in surface soil were significantly correlated with the per square kilometer GDP (gross domestic product) of industrial land, the per capita GDP, as well as the production and consumption of energy. These results indicate that anthropogenic factors have greatly affected the levels of soil PAHs in China. This study improves our understanding on the status and sources of soil PAH contamination in China, thereby facilitating the implementation of strategies of prevention, control, and remediation of soils.

RESUMEN

Pot experiments were conducted under abiotic conditions to investigate the interactive influence of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) and lead (Pb) on the seed germination, germ length, root exudation and physiological characteristics of tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceae), and the uptake, accumulation of Pb and BDE-209 in the plant tissues. Results show that seed germination and germ length were impacted by Pb but less influenced by BDE-209. BDE-209 spiking (10 and 50 mg/L) could alleviate the toxicity of high Pb concentration on seed germination and growth. The chlorophyll content was significantly increased at 500 mg/kg Pb but declined at 2000 mg/kg Pb. Low-level Pb contamination (500 mg/kg) activated antioxidase activity; however, 2000 mg/kg Pb significantly reduced the antioxidase activity. Plant biomass slightly decreased at 500 mg/kg Pb but significantly declined at 2000 mg/kg Pb. The addition of a moderate dosage of BDE-209 (10-50 mg/kg) lessened Pb phytotoxicity, leading to improved plant growth relative to the case of Pb spiking alone. The exudate secretion was significantly enhanced by Pb addition, but BDE-209 spiking only caused slightly increased secretion. Pb could interfere with BDE-209 adsorption and translocation of tall fescue by affecting physiological behavior of the plant, but BDE-209 exhibited little influence on the Pb fate in the plant. Overall, BDE-209 had slight interference on the impact of Pb towards tall fescue. The results demonstrate the complex interactive effects of organic pollutants and heavy metals in the soil-plant system.

RESUMEN

Chlorpyrifos manufacturing wastewater (CMW) is characterized by complex composition, high chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration, and toxicity. An integrated process comprising of peroxide (H2O2) promoted-catalytic wet air oxidation (PP-CWAO), struvite precipitation, and biological aerated filters (BAF) was constructed to treat CMW at a starting COD of 34000-35000 mg/L, total phosphorus (TP) of 5550-5620 mg/L, and total organophosphorus (TOP) of 4700-4840 mg/L. Firstly, PP-CWAO was used to decompose high concentrations of organic components and convert concentrated and recalcitrant TOP to inorganic phosphate. Copper citrate and ferrous citrate were used as the catalysts of PP-CWAO. Under the optimized conditions, 100% TOP was converted to inorganic phosphate with 95.6% COD removal. Then, the PP-CWAO effluent was subjected to struvite precipitation process for recovering phosphorus. At a molar ratio of Mg2+:NH4+:PO43- = 1.1:1.0:1.0, phosphate removal and recovery reached 97.2%. The effluent of struvite precipitation was further treated by the BAF system. Total removals of 99.0%, 95.2%, 97.3%, 100%, and 98.3% were obtained for COD, total suspended solids, TP, TOP, and chroma, respectively. This hybrid process has proved to be an efficient approach for organophosphate pesticide wastewater treatment and phosphorus reclamation.

RESUMEN

Soil pollution severely threatens agro-ecosystem stability. It is important to accurately understand the status of farmland pollution in order to protect national food safety and human health. However, information of the combined pollution level of Chinese farmland soil and associated human health risk at the national scale is relatively lacking. In this study, 5597 samples from 1781 farmland soil sites were obtained from 553 reports and combined into pollution databases of heavy metals, organochlorines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Based on the data obtained, this paper demonstrated the current pollution status of farmland soil, and assessed the subsequent human health risk. Results showed that the combined pollution ratio of Chinese farmland soil was 22.10%, with 1.23% of severe pollution level. Moreover, the total non-carcinogenic hazard quotients of farmland soil pollution were within the safety threshold for adults, but there was a slight non-carcinogenic risk for children. For adults, the ratio of total farmland area to total carcinogenic risk quotients above the safety threshold of 1 × 10-5 was only 1.02%, but for children, the ratio was as high as 20.75%. On the other side, food crop and vegetable plantations were the priority control farmland soil compared to other types. Meanwhile, Yunnan, Hunan, Anhui, Henan, and Liaoning were selected as the priority control provinces due to their severe pollutions and high human health risks. This study has provided a comprehensive pollution and health risk assessment. Furthermore, the spatial distribution might provide as the scientific support for accelerating the mapping of soil pollution in China, as well as developing the policy for the contaminated farmland soil management.
