RESUMEN

A general and versatile method for the analysis and processing of HR-TEM data useful for several applications is presented. The first utility is to identify the structures seen in the micrographs; also can be extended to propose the interaction of structure dynamics between various phases; and also it can be hybridized with the chemical method to make a proposal of new structure and/or phase. The general method consisted of four steps: 1) micrograph pretreatment, 2) measurement of planar distances, 3) structure identification, and 4) structure corroboration. Crystallographic planes were immediately identified by comparing the interplanar distances. Next, crystallographic data were collected from the Crystal Structures Database (ICSD) and introduced into Diamond software to visualize the planes in each structure. In addition, from the zone axis point of view it must show the planes aligned, similar as is observed in the HR-TEM micrograph.•It was possible establish the growth mechanism of the different structures by identifying how is the structural interaction between the different oxides and sulfide phases.•Method was successful applied to propose a new TiCoMoS sulfide phase through HR-TEM results.•The method can also be extended to other areas where structural studies with HR-TEM are viable, such as biology, electronics, among others.

RESUMEN

Low concentrations of hazardous gases are difficult to detect with common gas sensors. Using semiconductor nanostructures as a sensor element is an alternative. Single ZnO nanowire gas sensor devices were fabricated by manipulation and connection of a single nanowire into a four-electrode aluminum probe in situ in a dual-beam scanning electron microscope-focused ion beam with a manipulator and a gas injection system in/column. The electrical response of the manufactured devices shows response times up to 29 s for a 121 ppm of H2 pulse, with a variation in the nanowire resistance appreciable at room temperature and at 373.15 K of approximately 8% and 14% respectively, showing that ZnO nanowires are good candidates to detect low concentrations of H2.

RESUMEN

This paper presents the physicochemical and nutrimental characterization of fresh nopal (Opuntia ficus indica, Redonda variety) and nopal powder produced at different stages of development. Nopal powder was obtained by dry vacuum technique using 10(2) Torr and low temperature (40 degrees C). The results showed that the nutrimental and mineral composition of nopal changes as a function of the maturation as follow: The ash content increases from 18.41 for nopalitos (60 g of weight) to 23.24% (nopal pads 200 g); calcium content increases from 1.52 to 3.72%, while phosphorous exhibits an opposite trend: 0.43 to 0.27%, respectively. Calcium oxalate was determined by X-ray diffraction and SEM microscopy and quantified by using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Calcium oxalate decreases from 7.95 to 3.47 mg/g and the Ca/P ratio varies from 3.6 to 11. The soluble fibre decreases from 25.22 to 14.91%, while insoluble fibre increases from 29.87 to 41.65%. These results suggest that nopal could be an important source of minerals within the diets of people in Mexico and the rest of Latin America.
