RESUMEN

Coastal beaches are vulnerable to microplastic pollution originating primarily from terrestrial and marine sources or the in situ weathering of plastic waste. The present study investigates the effects of rainfall events on the composition and diversity of microplastics on beaches in Xiamen City on a short-term scale. In the results, the quantity of microplastics in beach sediments was 245.83 ± 11.61 items·kg-1 (mean ± standard error). The abundance of microplastics did not differ after each rainfall event but significantly decreased after multiple rainfall events. When the diversity of microplastics in the coastal area was evaluated, the Shannon-Wiener index and Pielou's index also decreased from 3.12 and 0.64 to 2.99 and 0.62, respectively, after multiple rainfall events. Rainfall had varying effects on microplastics depending on their size and shape, with particles smaller than 500 µm experiencing pronounced reductions. There was a significant negative correlation between the abundance of microplastics and the grain size of sand, but a positive correlation with sediment moisture content. We encourage the consideration of the potential impact of rainfall events during sample collection to ensure the reliability of the data. We also recommend using diversity indexes to help in understanding the influence of physical processes on microplastic distribution and their mechanisms.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In recent years, hyperuricemia and acute gouty arthritis have become increasingly common, posing a serious threat to public health. Current treatments primarily involve Western medicines with associated toxic side effects. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the therapeutic effects of total flavones from Prunus tomentosa (PTTF) on a rat model of gout and explore the mechanism of PTTF's anti-gout action through the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. METHODS: We measured serum uric acid (UA), creatinine (Cr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Histopathological changes were observed using HE staining, and the expression levels of relevant proteins were detected through Western blotting. RESULTS: After PTTF treatment, all indicators improved significantly. PTTF reduced blood levels of UA, Cr, BUN, IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α, and decreased ankle swelling. CONCLUSIONS: PTTF may have a therapeutic effect on animal models of hyperuricemia and acute gouty arthritis by reducing serum UA levels, improving ankle swelling, and inhibiting inflammation. The primary mechanism involves the regulation of the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway to alleviate inflammation. Further research is needed to explore deeper mechanisms.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effectiveness of Arthroscopic-assisted Uni-portal Spinal Surgery (AUSS) in the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis. METHODS: A total of 475 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis from January 2019 to January 2023 were included in this study. Among them, 240 patients were treated with AUSS (AUSS group); the other 235 patients were treated with unilateral bi-portal endoscopy treatment (UBE group). The differences in surgery-related clinical indicators, pain degree before and after surgery, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), CT imaging parameters of spinal stenosis, and clinical efficacy were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Patients in the AUSS group had a shorter operative time than those in the UBE group, and the length of incision and surgical bleeding were less than those in the UBE group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Before operation, there was no significant difference in the VAS score of low back pain and leg pain between the two groups (P > 0. 05). After operation, patients in both groups showed a significant reduction in low back and leg pain, and their VAS scores were significantly lower than before the operation (P < 0.05). Three months after surgery, the results of CT re-examination in both groups showed that the spinal stenosis of the patients was well improved, and the measurements of lumbar spinal interspace APDC, CAC, ICA, CAD and LAC were significantly higher than those before surgery (P < 0. 05). Besides, the lumbar function of patients improved significantly in both groups, and ODI measurements were significantly lower than those before surgery (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Both AUSS and UBE with unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression can achieve good clinical results in the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis, but the former has the advantages of simpler operation, shorter operation time, shorter incision length, and less surgical blood loss.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Acute ischemic stroke is a major cause of mortality and disability worldwide, with approximately 7.4% to 7.7% recurrence within the first 3 months. This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers for predicting stroke recurrence. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a nested case-control study using a hospital-based cohort from the Third China National Stroke Registry selecting 214 age- and sex-matched patients with ischemic stroke with hypertension and no history of diabetes or heart disease. Using data-independent acquisition for discovery and multiple reaction monitoring for quantitative validation, we identified 26 differentially expressed proteins in large-artery atherosclerosis (Causative Classification of Ischemic Stroke [CCS]1), 16 in small-artery occlusion (CCS3), and 25 in undetermined causes (CCS5) among patients with recurrent stroke. In the CCS1 and CCS3 subgroups, differentially expressed proteins were associated with platelet aggregation, neuronal death/cerebroprotection, and immune response, whereas differentially expressed proteins in the CCS5 subgroup were linked to altered metabolic functions. Validated recurrence predictors included proteins associated with neutrophil activity and vascular inflammation (TAGLN2 [transgelin 2], ITGAM [integrin subunit α M]/TAGLN2 ratio, ITGAM/MYL9 [myosin light chain 9] ratio, TAGLN2/RSU1 [Ras suppressor protein 1] ratio) in the CCS3 subgroup and proteins associated with endothelial plasticity and blood-brain barrier integrity (ITGAM/MYL9 ratio and COL1A2 [collagen type I α 2 chain]/MYL9 ratio) in the CCS3 and CCS5 subgroups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide a foundation for developing a blood-based biomarker panel, using causative classifications, which may be used in routine clinical practice to predict stroke recurrence.

RESUMEN

Wetlands are important carbon sinks. However, the carbon sequestration potential of flooded wetlands may be weakened owing to water regime changes induced by anthropogenic disturbances. Using the eddy covariance technique, this study quantified the effects of the water level and vegetation types on the net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Reco) from a reed marsh (Miscanthus sacchariflorus) and a sedge meadow (Carex spp.) in the Dongting Lake floodplain from 2014 to 2016. Our results indicated that the sedge meadow (-89.49 to -186.47 g C m-2 y-1) and reed marsh (-246.12 to -513.94 g C m-2 y-1) were carbon sinks on the interannual timescale. However, the sedge meadow changed from a carbon sink to a carbon source during the flooding season. The effect of flooding on the carbon sink function in the reed marsh was dependent on the water level. The carbon sink function of the reed marsh was enhanced by moderate flooding (water level under 30.5 m in Chenglingji) owing to the inhibition of Reco, but was weakened by extremely high-water levels (over 33 m in Chenglingji) during the flooding season. Seasonal variations in NEE, GPP, and Reco were closely related to photosynthetic photon flux density, soil water content, water level, soil temperature, and air temperature. We can conclude that the increase in reed area combined with the decrease in flooding days in the sedge meadow can potentially enhance the carbon sink function of the Dongting Lake floodplain.

RESUMEN

Electrolysis that reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) to useful chemicals can, in principle, contribute to a more sustainable and carbon-neutral future1-6. However, it remains challenging to develop this into a robust process because efficient conversion typically requires alkaline conditions in which CO2 precipitates as carbonate, and this limits carbon utilization and the stability of the system7-12. Strategies such as physical washing, pulsed operation and the use of dipolar membranes can partially alleviate these problems but do not fully resolve them11,13-15. CO2 electrolysis in acid electrolyte, where carbonate does not form, has therefore been explored as an ultimately more workable solution16-18. Herein we develop a proton-exchange membrane system that reduces CO2 to formic acid at a catalyst that is derived from waste lead-acid batteries and in which a lattice carbon activation mechanism contributes. When coupling CO2 reduction with hydrogen oxidation, formic acid is produced with over 93% Faradaic efficiency. The system is compatible with start-up/shut-down processes, achieves nearly 91% single-pass conversion efficiency for CO2 at a current density of 600 mA cm-2 and cell voltage of 2.2 V and is shown to operate continuously for more than 5,200 h. We expect that this exceptional performance, enabled by the use of a robust and efficient catalyst, stable three-phase interface and durable membrane, will help advance the development of carbon-neutral technologies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Rituximab effectively targets B cells and reduces relapses in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). But the ideal dosage and treatment intervals remain unanswered. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of low and ultralow-dose rituximab in NMOSD. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of NMOSD patients treated with rituximab at two Chinese tertiary hospitals. Patients received either a low-dose regimen (500 mg reinfusion every 6 months) or an ultralow-dose regimen: 100 to 300 mg rituximab based on CD19+B cells (100 mg for 1-1.5% of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, 200 mg for 1.5-5%, and 300 mg for over 5%). RESULTS: We analyzed data from 136 patients (41 in the low-dose group, 95 in the ultralow-dose group) with median follow-up durations of 43 and 34.2 months, respectively. Both groups exhibited similar sex distribution, age at disease onset, annual relapse rate, and baseline disease duration. Survival analysis showed that ultralow-dose rituximab was noninferior to low-dose rituximab in preventing relapses. Infusion reactions occurred in 20 of 173 (11.6%) low-dose treatments and 9 of 533 (1.7%) ultralow-dose treatments. B-cell re-emergence was observed in 137 of 236 (58.1%) monitors in the low-dose group and 367 of 1136 (32.3%) monitors in the ultralow-dose group. CONCLUSION: Ultralow dose rituximab was noninferior to low-dose rituximab in preventing NMOSD relapses. A randomized controlled trial is essential to validate these findings.

RESUMEN

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have experienced a rapid surge in popularity, as evident from the extensive research with over 30 000 articles published in the past 5 years. Previous studies on AZIBs have showcased impressive long-cycle stability at high current densities, achieving thousands or tens of thousands of cycles. However, the practical stability of AZIBs at low current densities (<1C) is restricted to merely 50-100 cycles due to intensified cathode dissolution. This genuine limitation poses a considerable challenge to their transition from the laboratory to the industry. In this study, leveraging density functional theory (DFT) calculations, an artificial interphase that achieves both hydrophobicity and restriction of the outward penetration of dissolved vanadium cations, thereby shifting the reaction equilibrium and suppressing the vanadium dissolution following Le Chatelier's principle, is described. The approach has resulted in one of the best cycling stabilities to date, with no noticeable capacity fading after more than 200 cycles (≈720 h) at 200 mA g-1 (0.47C). These findings represent a significant advance in the design of ultrastable cathodes for aqueous batteries and accelerate the industrialization of aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hepatic cancer is a common cancer in clinical practice. Current drug therapies for this condition include targeted therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is the most serious complication of oncology treatment. According to the literature, several cases reported TLS occurred with targeted therapies for hepatic cancer. METHODS: Reporting odds ratio and information component were used to measure the disproportionate signals for TLS associated with targeted therapies, using data from the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). A stepwise sensitivity analysis was conducted to test the robustness of signals. Time-to-onset analysis was used to describe the latency of TLS events associated with targeted therapies. The Bradford Hill criteria were used to perform a global assessment of the evidence. RESULTS: Sorafenib, lenvatinib, cabozantinib, and bevacizumab showed higher disproportionate signals for TLS than chemotherapy. The median number of days to TLS occurrence after drug therapy was 5.5, 6.5, and 6.5 days for sorafenib, lenvatinib, and bevacizumab, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant association between tumor lysis syndrome and targeted therapies for hepatic carcinoma, with particularly strong signals for sorafenib and lenvatinib. Clinicians should be aware of the potential for tumor lysis syndrome in targeted therapies for hepatic carcinoma.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the abnormal radiomics features of the hippocampus in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and to explore the clinical implications of these features. METHODS: 752 participants were recruited in this retrospective multicenter study (7 centers), which included 236 MS, 236 NMOSD, and 280 normal controls (NC). Radiomics features of each side of the hippocampus were extracted, including intensity, shape, texture, and wavelet features (N = 431). To identify the variations in these features, two-sample t-tests were performed between the NMOSD vs. NC, MS vs. NC, and NMOSD vs. MS groups at each site. The statistical results from each site were then integrated through meta-analysis. To investigate the clinical significance of the hippocampal radiomics features, we conducted further analysis to examine the correlations between these features and clinical measures such as Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Brief Visuospatial Memory Test (BVMT), California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT), and Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task (PASAT). RESULTS: Compared with NC, patients with MS exhibited significant differences in 78 radiomics features (P < 0.05/862), with the majority of these being texture features. Patients with NMOSD showed significant differences in 137 radiomics features (P < 0.05/862), most of which were intensity features. The difference between MS and NMOSD patients was observed in 47 radiomics features (P < 0.05/862), mainly texture features. In patients with MS and NMOSD, the most significant features related to the EDSS were intensity and textural features, and the most significant features related to the PASAT were intensity features. Meanwhile, both disease groups observed a weak correlation between radiomics data and BVMT. CONCLUSION: Variations in the microstructure of the hippocampus can be detected through radiomics, offering a new approach to investigating the abnormal pattern of the hippocampus in MS and NMOSD.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Brain injury triggers neuroaxonal injury and neural death, that leads to the development of secondary sequelae. Throughout this process, brain injury factors released into circulation via the injured neurovascular unit are important prognostic parameters. Plasma NfL, NfH, MCP-1, and MMP-9 have been identified as potential indicators in this regard. METHODS: Using a microfluidic ELISA platform, we measured plasma from 273 healthy subjects that underwent quantifications of NfL, NfH, MCP-1, and MMP-9 levels. We investigated the possible associations between biomarkers and basic demographics. RESULTS: The median concentration of plasma NfL was 10.40 (IQR = 6.73 - 16.60) pg/mL, NfH was 70.70 (IQR = 39.75 - 125.50) pg/mL, MCP-1 was 191.0 (IQR = 162.0 - 237.5) pg/mL, and MMP-9 was 169,255 (IQR = 107,657 - 231,276) pg/mL. Among all four biomarkers, plasma NfL and NfH levels were positively correlated with age (r = 0.557, p < 0.001, r = 0.364, p = 0.003). NfL was also correlated with NfH (r = 0.391, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: These data provide a basis for the potential application of a brain-injury biomarker panel in routine clinical practice. It lays a significant foundation in supporting circulating CNS-biomarkers as noninvasive biomarkers for neurological disorders.

RESUMEN

Since ulcerative colitis (UC) has become a global concern, Lactiplantibacillus is considered an effective, safe strategy for alleviating intestinal inflammation in UC patients. The most advanced fourth-generation probiotics involve beneficial bacteria enclosed in biofilms with multiple advantages. However, the difference between the effect of probiotic biofilm and planktonic cells on UC remains unclear. This study indicated that the biofilm cells of Lactiplantibacillus LR-1 were more successful in increasing the colon length, relieving intestinal inflammation, and repairing colon damage, regulating the host immunity than the planktonic cells. Furthermore, the LR-1 biofilm cells helped prevent a decline in the Eubacterium hallii and Salinimicrobium levels and increased Kocuria and Candidatus Bacilloplasma abundance. Untargeted metabolomics analysis results suggested that the LR-1 biofilm was more successful in promoting the intestinal metabolism recovery of the UC mice than the planktonic cells. Finally, the phenotype-microbiota-metabolism network was conducted to reveal the relationship between these factors.

RESUMEN

Aimed to explore the mechanisms and targets of Diwu Yanggan Capsule (DWYG), a traditional Chinese medicine in liver regeneration, we used the TCMSP to obtain the active ingredients and targets of DWYG and the GEO database to obtain the DEGs related to liver regeneration. We also searched for liver regeneration-related genes in disease databases and integrated them with the herbal and GEO data to screen for potential targets of DWYG in liver regeneration. Enrichment analysis using R language and molecular docking of the key targets and active ingredients were constructed. We found 73 potential targets of DWYG in liver regeneration and revealed that DWYG may act through pathways such as MAPK, TNF, and IL-17. We also found that quercetin was a major component of DWYG with low binding energy to three key targets. Our results suggest that DWYG can facilitate liver regeneration and quercetin may be its core ingredient.

RESUMEN

Developing an eco-friendly, sustainable and antibacterial adsorbent is significant for actual water treatment. Herein, a bio-based antibacterial adsorbent based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles functionalized chitosan (CS) was prepared through an in-situ hydrolysis strategy using titanium oxysulfate as the source of TiO2. The as-obtained CS/TiO2 nanocomposite was characterized by a variety of analytical techniques. According to the Langmuir mode, the adsorption capacity of CS/TiO2 reached 23.64 mg P g-1, almost 8 times higher than that of CS. In addition, the normalized adsorption capacity (adsorption value per Ti) of CS/TiO2 was calculated to be 102.68 mg P g-1 Ti-1, much higher than pure TiO2 (60.11 mg P g-1 Ti-1). Moreover, CS/TiO2 exhibited a highly selective capacity for phosphate removal in the presence of competing anions, and showed high stability in a wide pH range of 3.0-8.0. When the phosphate concentration was 2.0 mg P L-1, the removal efficiency of phosphate reached 99.5 % and the residual concentration was only 10 µg P L-1, which meets the USEPA standards for eutrophication prevention and control. In addition, after treatment by CS/TiO2, the phosphate concentration of two sewage water samples decreased from 1.50 and 1.0 mg P L-1 to <0.10 mg P L-1, meeting the standard of level II water based on the Environmental Quality Standard of China (GB3838-2002). Ligand exchange and electrostatic interactions are mainly responsible for phosphate adsorption by CS/TiO2. Furthermore, the CS/TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited excellent antibacterial activity, which could avoid biofouling contamination caused by microorganisms. Benefiting from the above advantages, the as-designed CS/TiO2 nanocomposite has great potential as a bio-based antibacterial adsorbent for phosphate capture or removal from wastewater.

RESUMEN

Routine electrolyte additives are not effective enough for uniform zinc (Zn) deposition, because they are hard to proactively guide atomic-level Zn deposition. Here, based on underpotential deposition (UPD), we propose an "escort effect" of electrolyte additives for uniform Zn deposition at the atomic level. With nickel ion (Ni2+ ) additives, we found that metallic Ni deposits preferentially and triggers the UPD of Zn on Ni. This facilitates firm nucleation and uniform growth of Zn while suppressing side reactions. Besides, Ni dissolves back into the electrolyte after Zn stripping with no influence on interfacial charge transfer resistance. Consequently, the optimized cell operates for over 900 h at 1 mA cm-2 (more than 4 times longer than the blank one). Moreover, the universality of "escort effect" is identified by using Cr3+ and Co2+ additives. This work would inspire a wide range of atomic-level principles by controlling interfacial electrochemistry for various metal batteries.

RESUMEN

A cross-sectional census was conducted on all students at the campus of Inner Mongolia Medical University using a self-administered questionnaire. This study aimed to investigate their love from psychological pressure, behavioral characteristics, social cognition, etc. Our results show that all students cultivate feelings and become lifelong partners as their motivation for love. Among the population with various demographic characteristics, the prevalence of love among disadvantaged groups is low; that is, women are lower than men, and those from rural are lower than those from cities. After balancing areas and gender, mental working families have a high prevalence of love. Instead, students whose parents' high expectations pressure their children to have a high love prevalence. This is due to China's specific historical perspective. Our results suggested that although China has been deeply integrated with the world and has more frequent ideological and cultural exchanges, college students still inherit China's traditional outlook on love.

RESUMEN

The decrease in fly ash production due to the shift in coal industries toward a green environment has impacted many concrete industries as fly ash is a significant component in cement and concrete. It is critical for concrete industries to identify the availability of fly ash in landfills to meet their demand if the supply decreases. This paper aims to analyze the suitability of UAVs in determining the fly ash stockpile volumes. A laboratory test is performed to validate the proposed UAV method. Then, a real quarry site is selected to demonstrate the suitability in a large scale. The results indicate that the UAVs estimate the most accurate volume of the stockpile when the flight height is about five times the stockpile height. A considerable range of 3.5-5 times the stockpile height is most suitable for quantity takeoff. The findings of this study provide a recommendation for choosing the most appropriate technology for the quantitative estimation of fly ash in existing landfills on a large scale.

RESUMEN

The electrochemical effect of isotope (EEI) of water is introduced in the Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) electrolyte to deal with the challenge of severe side reactions and massive gas production. Due to the low diffusion and strong coordination of ions in D2 O, the possibility of side reactions is decreased, resulting in a broader electrochemically stable potential window, less pH change, and less zinc hydroxide sulfate (ZHS) generation during cycling. Moreover, we demonstrate that D2 O eliminates the different ZHS phases generated by the change of bound water during cycling because of the consistently low local ion and molecule concentration, resulting in a stable interface between the electrode and electrolyte. The full cells with D2 O-based electrolyte demonstrated more stable cycling performance which displayed ∼100 % reversible efficiencies after 1,000 cycles with a wide voltage window of 0.8-2.0 V and 3,000 cycles with a normal voltage window of 0.8-1.9 V at a current density of 2 A g-1 .
