RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Early detection of AKI is likely to speed diagnosis and implementation of measures to preserve renal function. To evaluate if renal Doppler resistive index (RI) would predict AKI in patients with NSTEMI on presentation in the emergency department. METHODS: Patients with NSTEMI at the emergency department were included. The renal Doppler RI was measured. Baseline demographic data and clinical characteristics of patients at admittance were recorded. Based on discharge diagnosis, the patients were divided into AKI group and no-AKI group. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine predictor variables significantly associated with AKI. RESULTS: A total of 293 patients were included in the analysis; 44 (15.0%) developed AKI without need for dialysis. There were statistical differences in the age, incidence of diabetes mellitus and cerebrovascular disease, beta-receptor blockers, serum creatinine and renal index between the two groups. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, age [OR 1.87; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.595-2.585; p = 0.027], diabetes mellitus (OR 2.007, 95% CI: 1.489-2.793; p = 0.014), serum creatinine (OR 1.817, 95% CI: 1.568-2.319; p = 0.013), and RI (OR 2.168, 95% CI: 1.994-4.019; p = 0.003) predicted AKI in patients with NSTEMI. According to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, RI showed a significantly increased area under the curve (AUC) compared to serum creatitine (AUC: 0.891 vs 0.679; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Renal Doppler RI may be a useful predictor of AKI in patients with NSTEMI in the emergency department.

RESUMEN

Aquaporins (AQPs) in plants can transport water and small molecules, and they play an important role in plant development and abiotic stress response. However, to date, a comprehensive study on AQP family members is lacking. In this study, 27 AQP genes were identified from the passion fruit genome and classified into four groups (NIP, PIP, TIP, SIP) on the basis of their phylogenetic relationships. The prediction of protein interactions indicated that the AQPs of passion fruit were mainly associated with AQP family members and boron protein family genes. Promoter cis-acting elements showed that most PeAQPs contain light response elements, hormone response elements, and abiotic stress response elements. According to collinear analysis, passion fruit is more closely related to Arabidopsis than rice. Furthermore, three different fruit ripening stages and different tissues were analyzed on the basis of the transcriptome sequencing results for passion fruit AQPs under drought, high-salt, cold and high-temperature stress, and the results were confirmed by qRT-PCR. The results showed that the PeAQPs were able to respond to different abiotic stresses, and some members could be induced by and expressed in response to multiple abiotic stresses at the same time. Among the three different fruit ripening stages, 15 AQPs had the highest expression levels in the first stage. AQPs are expressed in all tissues of the passion fruit. One of the passion fruit aquaporin genes, PeTIP3-2, which was induced by drought stress, was selected and transformed into Arabidopsis. The survival rate of transgenic plants under drought stress treatment is higher than that of wild-type plants. The results indicated that PeTIP3-2 was able to improve the drought resistance of plants. Our discovery lays the foundation for the functional study of AQPs in passion fruit.

RESUMEN

An efficient route for the semi-synthesis of either 1α- or 1ß-OH epimers of 1-hydroxy-3-deoxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (1), 6-8 steps from oleanolic acid is reported. The synthesis involves stereoselective formation of α,ß-unsaturated epoxy ketone and subsequent Wharton reaction as key steps, offering a new access to the 1-O-substituted oleanolic acid-type pentacyclic triterpenoids.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupuncture (Acu) on bone metabolism and serum estradiol (E2) in ovariectomized (OVX) rats for studying its underlying mechanism in treating osteoporosis. METHODS: Forty female SD rats of six months were randomized into sham operation (sham), model, Acu and Diethylstibestrol (DES) groups, with 10 cases in each. Postmenopausal osteoporosis model was established by removing ovaries under anesthesia. In Acu group, bilateral "Dazhu" (BL 11), "Shenshu" (BL 23) and "Pishu" (BL 20) were punctured and stimulated for 30 minutes, once daily for 60 days. Rats of DES group were drenched with saline+DES (22.5 microg/ml) 1 ml/100 g, once daily for 60 days. At the end of experiments, blood samples were collected from femoral artery for assaying serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) contents by using biochemistry, and serum bone gla protein (BGP) and E2 levels by immunoradioassay. RESULTS: Compared with sham group, uterus wet weight, serum E2 content in model group decreased significantly (P < 0.01) while body weight, serum ALP, BGP and TRAP levels in model group increased significantly (P < 0.01, 0.05). Compared with model group, uterus wet weight and serum Ez content in Acu and DES groups increased significantly (P < 0.01); while body weight, serum ALP, BGP and TRAP levels decreased considerably (P < 0.01). No significant differences were found between Acu and DES groups in serum E2, ALP, BGP and TRAP levels (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can suppress abnormal increase of body weight and decrease of serum E2 level, and significantly downregulate serum ALP, BGP and TRAP levels in OVX rats, which may contribute to its effect in relieving osteoporosis.

RESUMEN

This study assessed the relative contributions of visual and proprioceptive/motor information during self-motion in a virtual environment using a speed discrimination task. Subjects wore a head-mounted display and rode a stationary bicycle along a straight path in an empty, seemingly infinite hallway with random surface texture. For each trial, subjects were required to pedal the bicycle along two paths at two different speeds (a standard speed and a comparison speed) and subsequently report whether the second speed travelled was faster than the first. The standard speed remained the same while the comparison speed was varied between trials according to the method of constant stimuli. When visual and proprioceptive/motor cues were provided separately or in combination, the speed discrimination thresholds were comparable, suggesting that either cue alone is sufficient. When the relation between visual and proprioceptive information was made inconsistent by varying optic flow gain, the resulting psychometric functions shifted along the horizontal axis (pedalling speed). The degree of separation between these functions indicated that both optic flow and proprioceptive cues contributed to speed estimation, with proprioceptive cues being dominant. These results suggest an important role for proprioceptive information in speed estimation during self-motion.
