RESUMEN

Humus is the stable form of carbon storage in straw compost. The phenol-amine reaction is a pathway for humus formation in straw compost. In this study, two reaction systems, GP group (pyrogallol and glycine) and GCP group (catechol, pyrogallol, and glycine), were constructed in a simulated composting environment and revealed the molecular binding mechanism of the phenol-amine reaction through spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The results showed that phenolic self-polymerization was faster than phenol-amine reaction. Therefore, the aromatization degree of GP was 27.14 % higher than that of GCP. The phenol-amine reaction first produced fulvic acid, and then formed humus units rich in active functional group structures (i.e., phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups). These units further captured small molecule compounds to form humic acid eventually. This study would provide theoretical support for exploring the humus formation process and the promotion of straw humification by adding phenol or amino acids to compost.

Objective. Ultrasound-assisted orthopaedic navigation held promise due to its non-ionizing feature, portability, low cost, and real-time performance. To facilitate the applications, it was critical to have accurate and real-time bone surface segmentation. Nevertheless, the imaging artifacts and low signal-to-noise ratios in the tomographical B-mode ultrasound (B-US) images created substantial challenges in bone surface detection. In this study, we presented an end-to-end lightweight US bone segmentation network (UBS-Net) for bone surface detection.Approach. We presented an end-to-end lightweight UBS-Net for bone surface detection, using the U-Net structure as the base framework and a level set loss function for improved sensitivity to bone surface detectability. A dual attention (DA) mechanism was introduced at the end of the encoder, which considered both position and channel information to obtain the correlation between the position and channel dimensions of the feature map, where axial attention (AA) replaced the traditional self-attention (SA) mechanism in the position attention module for better computational efficiency. The position attention and channel attention (CA) were combined with a two-class fusion module for the DA map. The decoding module finally completed the bone surface detection.Main Results. As a result, a frame rate of 21 frames per second (fps) in detection were achieved. It outperformed the state-of-the-art method with higher segmentation accuracy (Dice similarity coefficient: 88.76% versus 87.22%) when applied the retrospective ultrasound (US) data from 11 volunteers.Significance. The proposed UBS-Net for bone surface detection in ultrasound achieved outstanding accuracy and real-time performance. The new method out-performed the state-of-the-art methods. It had potential in US-guided orthopaedic surgery applications.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the positional consistency between the guidewire and the screw in spinal internal fixation surgery. METHODS: This study involved 64 patients who underwent robot-assisted thoracic or lumbar pedicle screw fixation surgery. Guidewires were inserted with the assistance of the Tirobot. Either cannulated screws or solid screws were inserted. Guidewire and screw accuracy was measured using CT images based on the Gertzbein and Robbins scale. The positional consistency between guidewire and screw was evaluated based on the fused CT images, which could graphically and quantitatively demonstrate the consistency. The consistency was evaluated based on a grading system that considered the maximum distance and angulation between the centerline of the guidewire and the screw in the region of the pedicle. RESULTS: A total of 322 screws were placed including 206 cannulated ones and 116 solid ones. Based on the Gertzbein and Robbins scale, 97.5% of the guidewires were grade A, and 94.1% of the screws were grade A. Based on our guidewire-screw consistency scale, 85% in cannulated group, and 69.8% in solid group, were grade A. Both solid and cannulated screws may alter trajectory compared to the guidewires. The positional accuracy and guidewire-screw consistency in the solid screw group is significantly worse than that in the cannulated screw group. The cortical bone of the pedicle has a positive guide effect on either solid or cannulated screws. CONCLUSION: The pedicle screws may alter trajectory despite the guidance of the guidewires. Solid screws show worse positional accuracy and guidewire-screw consistency compared with cannulated screws. Trial registration The study was retrospectively registered and approved by our center's institutional review board.

BACKGROUND: For the spinal internal fixation procedures, connecting rods to the pedicle screws are commonly used in all spinal segments from the cervical to sacral spine. So far, we have only seen single vertebral screw trajectory planning methods in literatures. Joint screw placements in multi-level vertebrae with the constraint of an ipsilateral connecting rod are not considered. PURPOSE: In this paper, a screw trajectory planning method that considers screw-rod joint system with both multi-level vertebral constraints and individual vertebral safety tolerance are proposed. METHODS: The proposed method addresses three challenging constraints jointly for multi-level vertebral fixation with pedicle screws. First, a cylindrical screw safe passage model is suggested instead of a unique mathematical optimal trajectory for a single pedicle. Second, the flexible screw cap accessibility model is also included. Third, the connecting rod is modeled to accommodate the spine contour and support the needed gripping capacity. The retrospective clinical data of relative normal shape spines from Beijing Jishuitan hospital were used in the testing. The screw trajectories from the existing methods based on single vertebra and the proposed method based on multi-level vertebrae optimization are calculated and compared. RESULTS: The results showed that the calculated screw placements by the proposed method can achieve 88% success rate without breaking the pedicle cortex and 100% in clinical class A quality (allow less than 2 mm out of the pedicle cortex) compared to 86.1% and 99.1%, respectively, with the existing methods. Expert evaluation showed that the screw path trajectories and the connecting rod calculated by the new method satisfied the clinical implantation requirements. CONCLUSIONS: The new screw planning approach that seeks an overall optimization for multi-level vertebral fixation is feasible and more advantageous for clinical use than the single vertebral approaches.

RESUMEN

Objective.Robot-assisted pedicle screw placement in spinal surgery can reduce the complications associated with the screw placement and reduce the hospital return counts due to malfunctions. However, it requires accurate planning for a high-quality procedure. The state-of-the-art technologies reported in the literature either ignore the anatomical variations across vertebrae or require substantial human interactions. We present an improved approach that achieves pedicle screw path planning through multiple projections of a numerically re-oriented vertebra with the estimated posture.Approach.We proposed an improved YOLO-type neural network model (YOLOPOSE3D) to estimate the posture of a vertebra before pedicle path planning. In YOLOPOSE3D, the vertebral posture is given as a rotation quaternion and 3D location coordinates by optimizing the intersection over union of the vertebra with the predicted posture and the actual posture. Then, a new local coordinate system is established for the vertebra based on the estimated posture. Finally, the optimal pedicle screw path trajectory is determined from the multiple projections of the vertebra in the local coordinates.Main results.The experimental results in difficult cases of scoliosis showed that the new YOLOPOSE3D network could accurately detect the location and posture of the vertebra with average translation and orientation errors as small as 1.55 mm and 2.55°. The screw path planning achieved 83.1% success rate without breaking the pedicle cortex for the lumbar vertebral L1-L5, which is better than that of a doctor's manual planning, 82.4%. With the clinical class A requirement to allow less than 2 mm out of the pedicle cortex, the success rate achieved nearly 100%.Significance.The proposed YOLOPOSED3D method can accurately determine the vertebral postures. With the improved posture prior, better clinical outcomes can be achieved for pedicle screw placement in spine internal fixation procedures.

Black carbon (BC) exports huge amounts of its derived DOM from terrestrial ecosystems annually through a variety of ways (i.e., erosion or runoff migration). The pyrolytic feedstock type and temperature resulted in DOM derived from highly condensed aromatic and non-aromatic BC. However, the behaviors of low aromatic BC-derived DOM at diverse leaching time are poorly understood. In this work, low aromatic BCs were prepared by pyrolysis corn straws at 250 °C, 350 °C and 450 °C. Extraction experiments for four leaching time (6 h, 10 h, 15 h and 21 h) were set up to simulate BC-derived DOM generative process in nature. The phytotoxicity of BC-derived DOM was evaluated via germination index (GI). Spectral characteristics were discussed to analyze the phytotoxicity variations of fluorescence components composition at different time, including the excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor, two-dimensional correlation spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results suggested that low aromatic BC-derived DOM might contain aromatic phenolic compounds. A longer time contributed to accumulate the complex, hard-to-use organic matters, leading to lower GI. These results would supplement the dynamic spectral characteristics of low aromatic BC-derived DOM and its environmental risks during the leaching process.

Mink manure is one of the high nitrogenous wastes, which can easily cause nitrogen mineralization during composting, resulting in low resource reutilization. However, there are few studies on the resource utilization of mink manure. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of functional microbial (bacterial and actinomycetes agents) inoculation on nitrogen mineralization during mink manure composting. Results suggested that the inoculum, especially actinomycetes agents, could increase organic nitrogen and bioavailable organic nitrogen (BON) content. Principal component analysis and Random Forest model demonstrated that the inoculants increase the abundance of microorganisms that positively correlated with BON, decrease the microorganisms that negatively correlated with BON. Consequently, the inoculation of functional microbial agents could effectively reduce nitrogen mineralization and improve composting quality. Therefore, this study provided theoretical and technical support for optimizing mink manure composting, promoting the resource utilization of high nitrogen wastes.

Carbazoles and dimethyl carbazoles (DMCs) are important nitrogen heterocyclic aromatic compounds in oils and sedimentary rock extracts. Based on both migration fractionation effects and differences in the thermal stability of their isomers, carbazoles can be used to trace oil migration orientations and filling pathways. Molecular biomarker compositions indicate that all oils and oil-bearing sand extracts in the Eocene fault-blocked reservoirs of the Huzhuangji area (Western Slope Belt) of the Dongpu Depression (Bohai Bay Basin, East China) belong to a single oil population. In this study, four geochemical indicators relating to carbazoles, namely (a) 1,8-/2,7-dimethyl carbazoles (1,8-/2,7-DMC); (b) 1,8-/2,5-dimethyl carbazoles (1,8-/2,5-DMC); (c) 1,8-/N-exposed dimethyl carbazoles (1,8-/N-exposed DMC); and (d) G1 N-shielded %, were applied to trace oil migration orientations and filling pathways. The results show that these parameter values gradually increase toward the Hu-5 fault block at the structural high. The measured values from the subsurface are consistent with the results calculated from the molecular adsorption modeling. Therefore, it is concluded that the relative parameters of dimethyl carbazoles are practical molecular indicators for tracing oil migration orientations and filling pathways in syn-rift fault-blocked reservoirs.

The final products of shikimic acid pathway, aromatic amino acids (AAA), can be used as humic acid (HA) precursors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the contribution of shikimic acid pathway on the formation of HA during composting. Four composting treatments were carried out in this study, including the control, biochar addition, montmorillonite addition, biochar and montmorillonite combined addition. The results showed that the correlations between AAA and HA were enhanced during combined addition composting, and functional microorganisms involved in the shikimic acid pathway increased. In addition, random forest model suggested that 63.3% of the top 30 genera contributing to the HA formation were functional microorganisms involved in the shikimic acid pathway, which fully proved the critical role of shikimic acid pathway. Therefore, this study provided a new perspective for revealing the crucial factors that promoted the formation of HA during composting.

The measured composition and distribution of methyltrimethyltridecylchroman (MTTC) compounds in the crude oils from Wenliu (salt-rich zone) and Machang (salt-free zone) areas of the Dongpu Depression were correlated with redox conditions and paleosalinity. The oil samples derived from the mesosaline environment were found with all alkylated MTTC series present. In addition, the dimethyl MTTCs developed more favorably in the oils derived from a relatively reducing and hypersaline environment (Wenliu) compared to those from the fresh lacustrine settings (Machang), while the trimethyl MTTCs developed more favorably in the fresh water environment (Machang). Determination of the oil maturity in the "oil window" by a series of aromatic maturity indicators suggests that MTTC compounds are not only present in immature or low-mature oils but also distributed in mature oils. Therefore, the "low-mature" oil found with abundant MTTC compounds, especially derived from the saline lacustrine settings, should be assessed with caution.

The aims of this study were to identify the driving factors of humic acid (HA) during rice straw composting based on Fenton pretreatment with bacterial inoculation. Rice straw was pretreated by Fenton reactions and then inoculated during composting, which was set up CK (control), FeW (Fenton pretreatment) and FeWI (Fenton pretreatment + functional bacterial agents). Results indicated that Fenton pretreatment and inoculation of functional bacteria increased the concentration of HA components, which was due to that bacterial composition was changed and bacterial diversity was decreased. Moreover, Fenton pretreatment and inoculation of functional bacteria increased the bacterial amounts of shikimic acid metabolism genes and the correlation between HA components and shikimic acid metabolism genes. Therefore, the functional bacteria were core driving factors, and NH4--N, pH, cellulose and bacterial diversity as key environmental factors to promote the formation of HA components.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the underlying mechanisms of the protective effects of Dingxin Recipe (: , DXR), a Chinese compound prescription that has been used clinically in China for more than 20 years, on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced arrhythmias in rat model. METHODS: A total of 30 rats were randomly divided into three groups: sham group, I/R group, and DXR-pretreated I/R (DXR-I/R) group. Rats in the DXR-DXRI/R group were intragastrically administrated with DXR (12.5 g/kg per day) for consecutive 7 days, while rats I/in the sham and I/R groups were administrated with normal saline. Arrhythmias were introduced by I/R and electrocardiograms (ECG) were recorded. Two-dimensional (2-D) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and matrix-matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) were used to identify assisted differentially expressed proteins. Immunohistochemistry, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RQ-RQPCR), Western blot, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were performed to analyze proteins PCR), obtained in the above experiments. RESULTS: DXR significantly reduced the incidence and mean duration of ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation and dramatically decreased the mortality, as well as arrhythmia score, compared with those of the I/R group. Among successfully identified proteins, prohibitin (PHB) and heart fatty acid binding protein (hFABP) were up-regulated in DXR-pretreated I/R rats compared with those of the I/R rats. In addition, compared with the I/R group, the level of glutathione (GSH) was elevated accompanied by reduced expressions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and neutrophil infiltration in I/R rats with DXR pretreatment. CONCLUSIONS: DXR could alleviate I/R-induced arrhythmias, which might be related to increased expression of PHB. The enhanced expression of PHB prevented against the depletion of GSH and consequently inhibited apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. Furthermore, up-regulation of PHB might ameliorate I/R-induced cell death and leakage of hFABP by suppressing neutrophil infiltration and IL-6 expressions.
