RESUMEN

Rapid advancements in immersive communications and artificial intelligence have created a pressing demand for high-performance tactile sensing gloves capable of delivering high sensitivity and a wide sensing range. Unfortunately, existing tactile sensing gloves fall short in terms of user comfort and are ill-suited for underwater applications. To address these limitations, we propose a flexible hand gesture recognition glove (GRG) that contains high-performance micropillar tactile sensors (MPTSs) inspired by the flexible tube foot of a starfish. The as-prepared flexible sensors offer a wide working range (5 Pa to 450 kPa), superfast response time (23 ms), reliable repeatability (∼10000 cycles), and a low limit of detection. Furthermore, these MPTSs are waterproof, which makes them well-suited for underwater applications. By integrating the high-performance MPTSs with a machine learning algorithm, the proposed GRG system achieves intelligent recognition of 16 hand gestures under water, which significantly extends real-time and effective communication capabilities for divers. The GRG system holds tremendous potential for a wide range of applications in the field of underwater communications.

RESUMEN

Pesticide residues in rice have attracted widespread public attention in recent years. This research aimed to monitor the residues of 17 pesticides and their 3 metabolites in 120 samples of rice and rice flour collected from markets in China using the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, Safe) pretreatment method combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The monitoring results showed that isoprothiolane, tricyclazole, fenoxanil, and tebuconazole were detected in the rice samples, with detection frequencies of 33.3%, 17.5%, 8.3%, and 2.5%, and concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/kg (median = 0.04), 0.01 to 0.17 mg/kg (median = 0.14), 0.04 to 0.06 mg/kg (median = 0.05), and 0.01 to 0.02 mg/kg (median = 0.01), respectively. The residues of these four pesticides were all below their corresponding maximum residue levels (MRLs) set by China. Additionally, isoprothiolane, tricyclazole, fenoxanil, and tebuconazole were detected in rice flour samples, with detection frequencies of 74.2%, 55.0%, 5.0%, and 2.5%, and concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 mg/kg (median = 0.04), 0.01 to 0.04 mg/kg (median = 0.02), 0.01 to 0.06 mg/kg (median = 0.03), and 0.02 to 0.04 mg/kg (median = 0.03), respectively. Furthermore, the chronic dietary intake risk (HQc), the acute dietary intake risk (HQa), and cumulative dietary risk (HI) for all the detected pesticides were evaluated and found well below 100%, indicating that the dietary intake risks would not pose potential health risks.

RESUMEN

Touch panels are deemed as a critical platform for the future of human-computer interaction and metaverse. Recently, stretchable iontronic touch panels have attracted attention due to their superior adhesivity to the human body. However, such adhesion can not be named "real wearable", leading to discomfort for the wearer, such as rashes or itching with long-time wearing. Herein, a skin-friendly and wearable iontronic textile-based touch panel with highly touch-sensing resolution and deformation insensitivity is designed based on an in-suit growing strategy. This textile-based touch panel endows excellent interfacial hydrophilic and biocompatibility with human skin by overcoming the bottlenecks of the hydrogel-based uncomfortable sticky touch interface and low mechanical behavior. The developed touch panel enables handwriting interaction with good mechanical capacity (114 MPa), nearly 4145 times higher than pure hydrogel. More importantly, our touch panel possesses intrinsic insensitivity to wide external loading from the silver fiber (<0.003 g) to even heavy metal block (>10 kg). As proof of concept, the textile-based iontronic touch panel is applied to handwriting interaction, such as a flexible keyboard and wearable sketchpad. This iontronic touch panel with skin-friendly and wearable qualitities is helpful for next-generation wearable interaction electronics.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the effect of Tripterygium wilfordii polyglycoside tablets on serum inflammatory factors and T cells in patients with chronic nephritis. METHODS: A total of 89 patients with chronic nephritis were randomly divided into a control group (44 cases, treated with irbesartan hydrochlorothiazide combined with dipyridamole) and an observation group (45 cases, treated with Tripterygium wilfordii polyglycoside tablets based on irbesartan hydrochlorothiazide and dipyridamole like the control group). Patients in both groups were treated for two months. The renal function, inflammatory factors, the proportion of T lymphocyte subsets, and 24 h urinary protein quantification (24 h Upro) of patients with hemodialysis were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. The occurrence of adverse reactions was recorded. RESULTS: SCR, BUN levels, 24 h Upro, serum hs-CRP, TNF-α, and IL-8 levels in the two groups after treatment were lower than those before treatment, and those of the observation group were lower than those of the control group (all P<0.05). After treatment, the CD4+ ratio and CD4+/CD8+ ratio of the two groups of patients increased, while the CD8+ ratio decreased. The changes in the observation group were greater than those in the control group (all P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of total adverse reactions between the two groups during treatment (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Treatment combined with Tripterygium wilfordii polyglycosides can significantly alleviate the inflammatory state of patients with chronic glomerulonephritis, reduce the level of proteinuria, and improve renal function. Tripterygium wilfordii polyglycosides can improve immune function of the body and has high safety.

Stable attachment of a leading-edge vortex (LEV) plays a key role in generating the high lift on rotating wings with a central body. The central body size can affect the LEV structure broadly in two ways. First, an overall change in the size changes the Reynolds number, which is known to have an influence on the LEV structure. Second, it may affect the Coriolis acceleration acting across the wing, depending on the wing-offset from the axis of rotation. To investigate this, the effects of Reynolds number and the wing-offset are independently studied for a rotating wing. The three-dimensional LEV structure is mapped using a scanning particle image velocimetry technique. The rapid acquisition of images and their correlation are carefully validated. The results presented in this paper show that the LEV structure changes mainly with the Reynolds number. The LEV-split is found to be only minimally affected by changing the central body radius in the range of small offsets, which interestingly includes the range for most insects. However, beyond this small offset range, the LEV-split is found to change dramatically.

The flow-induced vibration response of a square cross-sectional cylinder with low mass and damping ratio is analysed using continuous wavelet transforms (CWT) for three representative angles of attack of the cylinder to the incoming flow. The amplitude and frequency responses over a range of flow velocities map out multiple regimes (branches) of oscillation. Analysis of the time-frequency domain for boundary regions between branches using CWT reveals intermittency at the synchronization region boundaries as well as mode competition at branch boundaries. Complementary recurrence analysis shows that periodic dynamical states are interrupted by chaotic bursts in the transition regions around the higher branch at an angle of attack of α = 20° (a new branch first observed by Nemes et al. (2012 J. Fluid Mech.710, 102-130 (doi:10.1017/jfm.2012.353))), supporting the CWT-based frequency-time analysis.This article is part of the theme issue 'Redundancy rules: the continuous wavelet transform comes of age'.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanisms of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in a gastric cancer cell line treated with celecoxib. The human gastric carcinoma cell line NCI-N87 was treated with 15 µM celecoxib for 72 h (celecoxib group) and an equal volume of dimethylsulfoxide (control group), respectively. Libraries were constructed by NEBNext Ultra RNA Library Prep kit for Illumina. Paired-end RNA sequencing reads were aligned to a human hg19 reference genome using TopHat2. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and lncRNAs were identified using Cuffdiff. Enrichment analysis was performed using GO-function package and KEGG profile in Bioconductor. A protein-protein interaction network was constructed using STRING database and module analysis was performed using ClusterONE plugin of Cytoscape. ATP5G1, ATP5G3, COX8A, CYC1, NDUFS3, UQCRC1, UQCRC2 and UQCRFS1 were enriched in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. CXCL1, CXCL3, CXCL5 and CXCL8 were enriched in the chemokine signaling and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathways. ITGA3, ITGA6, ITGB4, ITGB5, ITGB6 and ITGB8 were enriched in the integrin-mediated signaling pathway. DEGs co-expressed with lnc-SCD-1:13, lnc-LRR1-1:2, lnc-PTMS-1:3, lnc-S100P-3:1, lnc-AP000974.1-1:1 and lnc-RAB3IL1-2:1 were enriched in the pathways associated with cancer, such as the basal cell carcinoma pathway in cancer. In conclusion, these DEGs and differentially expressed lncRNAs may be important in the celecoxib treatment of gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Effects of preoperative one week enteral nutrition (EN) support on the postoperative nutritional status, immune function and inflammatory response of gastric cancer patients were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 106 cases of gastric cancer patients were randomly divided into preoperative one week EN group (trial group) and early postoperative EN group (control group), which were continuously treated with EN support until the postoperative 9th day according to different treatment protocols. All the patients were checked for their body weight, skinfold thickness, upper arm circumference, white blood cell count (WBC), albumin (ALB), prealbumin (PA), C-reactive protein (CRP), humoral immunity (IgA, IgG), T cell subsets (CD4, CD8 and CD4/CD8), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), etc. on the preoperative and the postoperative 1st and 10th day, respectively. RESULTS: PA and IgG levels of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group on the postoperative 10th day, whereas IL-6 level of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. CONCLUSION: EN support for preoperative gastric cancer patients will improve the postoperative nutritional status and immune function, alleviate inflammatory response, and facilitate the recovery of patients.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that participate in a variety of biological processes, and dysregulation of miRNAs is widely associated with cancer development and progression. MiR-378 is frequently downregulated in colorectal cancer (CRC) and colorectal cell lines; however, it has high serum levels. Bioinformatics analysis further deduced that CDC40 is a potential target of miR-378, and luciferase reporter assays confirmed the direct regulation of CDC40 by miR-378. CDC40 plays a key role in cell cycle progression through G1/S and G2/M and pre-mRNA splicing. Subsequently, we determined that miR-378 inhibits cell growth and the G1/S transition in CRC cells and that these effects were CDC40-dependent. Finally, miR-378 increased cell apoptosis induced by the chemotherapeutic drug L-OHP. Our data highlight the potential application of miR-378 as a tumor suppressor for CRC therapy and overcoming chemoresistance, and it may also be a potential tumor marker for CRC prognosis.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) has a strong antioxidant effect, but the traditional SOD extraction method is not the most efficient method of SOD amplification. In this study, we report the cloning of the Cu/ZnSOD gene from Panax ginseng into a temperature-regulated expression plasmid, pBV220. Cu/ZnSOD inclusion bodies were expressed in E. coli at a high level. Then, the inclusion bodies were purified by ion-exchange chromatography and molecular sieve chromatography. Finally, we obtained stable SOD in the bacterial broth, with a protein content of 965 mg/L and enzyme specific activity of 9389.96 U/mg. These results provide a foundation for future studies on the antioxidant mechanisms of ginseng and the development and application of ginseng Cu/ZnSOD.

We investigated the association between polymorphisms in excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) (rs3212986, rs2298881 and rs11615) and xeroderma pigmentosum-complementation group F (XPF) (rs2276466 and rs6498486) and risk of colorectal cancer. A 1:1 matched case-control study was conducted. Conditional regression analysis indicated that individuals carrying the ERCC1 rs3212986 TT genotype and T allele had a marginally increased risk of colorectal cancer when compared with subjects with the GG genotype. Similarly, subjects carrying the rs11615 TT genotype and T allele had a marginally increased risk of colorectal cancer when compared with those with the CC genotype. Stratified analysis revealed that individuals with rs3212986 TT who were current or former smokers had a significantly increased risk of colorectal cancer, and a significant interaction was found between this SNP and cigarette smoking. In conclusion, our study suggests that rs3212986 and rs11615 polymorphisms are associated with risk of colorectal cancer in a Chinese population, particularly in smokers. This finding could be useful in revealing the genetic characteristics of colorectal cancer, and suggests more effective strategies for prevention and treatment.

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that is frequently misdiagnosed as a benign condition because of its small size, slow growth, and well-delineated appearance. Rapid spread and early death occur rarely. Here we report a case of synovial sarcoma of the buttocks presenting with a non-healing wound and rapid progression after local resection in a 23-year-old woman. She initially found a slightly painful subcutaneous mass in the left buttock and underwent local excision. Postoperatively, she developed a non-healing wound that did not respond to conventional antibiotic therapy and local wound care, and pitting edema of the lower extremities. A magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed a large heterogeneous, irregular mass in the buttocks with regional lymph node involvement. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses suggested the diagnosis of a poorly differentiated synovial sarcoma. Her condition deteriorated dramatically shortly thereafter; she developed systemic edema and died of respiratory failure. This case suggests that synovial sarcoma may be fatal within months of recognition if improperly managed and stresses the importance of adequate pre-surgical evaluation and postoperative pathological analysis in the management of a subcutaneous mass.

The aim of this paper is to summarize the methods of pancreaticojejunostomy in the pancreatic operation and to study the safety and feasibility of a new operative method called end-to-end invagination pancreaticojejunostomy with circle discontinuous U suture to prevent fistula of pancreaticojejunostomy. Eight-three patients with pancreaticoduodenectomy in the 3rd Hospital, Jilin University from 2001 January to 2006 April were reviewed. The incidences of pancreatic fistula with different types of pancreaticojejunostomy were compared. The overall incidence rate of pancreatic fistula was 26.5% (22/83). No pancreatic fistula occurred in end-to-end invagination pancreaticojejunostomy with circle discontinuous U suture. The incidence rate of the fistula following end-to-end invagination pancreaticojejunostomy with circle discontinuous U suture was significantly lower than that of traditional end-to-end pancreaticojejunostomy [40%, (10/25), P<0.01] and end-to-side pancreaticojejunostomy [27.3%, (12/44), P<0.05], but no significant difference (P>0.05) between traditional end-to-end pancreaticojejunostomy and end-to-side pancreaticojejunostomy was discovered. End-to-end invagination pancreaticojejunostomy with circle discontinuous U suture has a definite effect on avoiding pancreatic fistula following pancreaticojejunostomy and is worth being recommended. But the cases were limited, so this method would still need to be observed and confirmed further in the future.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the discrepancy proteins in gastric cancer by proteome analysis. METHODS: Total proteins of gastric cancer tissues and matched normal gastric epithelial tissues were separated respectively by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE). Mass spectrometry was used to test the differentially expressed proteins. RESULTS: One thousand one hundred and forty-seven protein spots from gastric cancer tissue and 1079 spots from the normal tissue were gained. Out of 164 different protein spots, 41 were only expressed in gastric cancer tissue, 27 were unique in normal tissue, 39 were up-regulated and 57 were down-regulated in gastric cancer. Seven proteins, which were highly expressed in gastric cancer tissue, were identified. CONCLUSION: Different protein spots between gastric cancer tissues and normal gastric epithelial tissue were gained by proteomics. The 7 discrepancy proteins were further identified. It establishes the foundation of finding specific gastric cancer proteins, which act as biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of gastric cancer.

Asthma is a common disease in the worldwide and it affects over 3.5 million adults and children in the UK. Asthma is a chronic disease characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, airway inflammation, airway remodelling and reversible airway obstruction. Inflammatory cells, cytokines, chemokines, adhesion molecules, and mediators are involved in pathogenesis of asthma. Chronic airway inflammation and remodelling are the major characters in asthma, which result in decreased pulmonary function. The precise processes are far understood at moment. Although corticosteroid therapy plus other exiting drugs (bronchodilators and oral leukotriene receptor antagonists) influences many different inflammatory and structural cell types and continues to be as the "gold standard" of therapy in asthma, many thousands have chronic, severe diseases and suffer daily symptoms which make their lives a misery. There remains a clear need for novel approaches to therapy, which will be informed by a clearer understanding of disease pathogenesis, particularly in the target organ where airway inflammation and remodelling, the hallmarks of asthma occur.

This work presents an electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy study of Sb irreversibly adsorbed on Pt(111) at various potentials. At an open circuit potential (0.46 V vs a Ag/AgCl electrode), well-ordered structures of SbO+ were found: four (4 x 3)-3SbO+ structures and one (2 square root(3) x 2 square root(3))R30 degrees-3SbO+ structure. In addition, several unidentifiable transient structures of SbO+ were observed, and their relations to the well-ordered structures of (4 x 3) and (2 square root(3) x 2 square root(3))R30 degrees, regarding structural evolution, were proposed. At a reducing potential (0 V), the Pt(111) surface was covered with irreversibly adsorbed Sb which consisted of three different domains: protruded domain, domain of uniaxially incommensurate (square root(3) x square root(2))-Sb, and domain of bare (1 x 1) Pt(111). During oxidation of elemental Sb at 0.30 V, the Sb domains of the (square root(3) x square root(2)) structure were oxidized, while the protruded domains were not oxidized. After underpotential deposition of additional Sb onto the Pt(111) covered with irreversibly adsorbed Sb, the whole surface was filled with the Sb domains where each Sb atoms were separated by the square root(2a) distance (a = one Pt-Pt distance, 0.277 nm). The observed electrochemical inactivity below 0.3 V was discussed in terms of the protruded domain of a presumable incommensurate (square root(2) x square root(2)) structure.

OBJECTIVE: To study the selective effect to tumor cells mediated by a recombinant adenoviral vector carrying E2F-1 promoter. METHODS: The AdEasy-1 adenoviral vector system was used in this experiment. Several recombinant adenovirus with tumor-targeting E2F-1 promoter were constructed and then the E2F-1 promoter gene was checked by PCR and sequencing. The two adenovirus expressing GFP gene which is regulated by E2F-1 promoter or CMV promoter were used to respectively transfect tumor cells and non-proliferating normal cells, then observed and analyzed the different results caused by different promoters. Vpr gene was cloned into the targeting recombinant adenovirus. The new adenovirus named rvAdE2F-1/vpr was used to transfect tumor cells SMMC-7721, LS174T and non-proliferating normal cells H292, L-02. The surviving rate of each group was registered; the level of E2F-1 protein expressed in normal and tumor cell lines were checked by Western Blot. RESULT: E2F-1 promoter can regulate the downstream gene GFP selectively expressed in LS174T and its activity in LS174T was similar with CMV promoter's; Vpr gene regulated by E2F-1 promoter can suppress the proliferation of tumor cells and no toxicity to normal cells; In all of the tumor cells, a much higher level of E2F-1 was expressed compared with normal cell lines. E2F-1 promoter's activity correlated well with E2F-1 protein levels. CONCLUSIONS: E2F-1 promoter can control a selective cell killing to cancer cells, with no effect to normal cells. The system of E2F-1 promoter is a useful method for tumor-targeting gene therapy.

Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is said to increase expression of chemokines attracting Th2 T cells. We hypothesized that asthma is characterized by elevated bronchial mucosal expression of TSLP and Th2-attracting, but not Th1-attracting, chemokines as compared with controls, with selective accumulation of cells bearing receptors for these chemokines. We used in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry to examine the expression and cellular provenance of TSLP, Th2-attracting (thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC)/CCL17, macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC)/CCL22, I-309/CCL1) and Th1-attracting (IFN-gamma-inducible protein 10 (IP-10)/CXCL10, IFN-inducible T cell alpha-chemoattractant (I-TAC)/CXCL11) chemokines and expression of their receptors CCR4, CCR8, and CXCR3 in bronchial biopsies from 20 asthmatics and 15 normal controls. BACKGROUND: RNA interference using short hairpin RNA (shRNA) can mediate sequence-specific inhibition of gene expression in mammalian cells. A vector-based approach for synthesizing shRNA has been developed recently. Overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), the MDR1 gene product, confers multidrug resistance (MDR) to cancer cells. In this study, we reversed MDR using shRNA expression vectors in a multidrug-resistant human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7/AdrR). METHODS: The two shRNA expression vectors were constructed and introduced into MCF-7/AdrR cells. Expression of MDR1 mRNA was assessed by RT-PCR, and P-gp expression was determined by Western Blot and immunocytochemistry. Apoptosis and sensitization of the breast cancer cells to doxorubicin were quantified by flow cytometry and methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assays, respectively. Cellular daunorubicin accumulation was assayed by laser confocal scanning microscopy (LCSM). Statistical significance of differences in mean values was evaluated by Student's t tests. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In MCF-7/AdrA cells transfected with MDR1-A and MDR1-B shRNA expression vectors, RT-PCR showed that MDR1 mRNA expression was reduced by 40.9% (P < 0.05), 30.1% (P < 0.01) (transient transfection) and 37.6% (P < 0.05), 28.0% (P < 0.01) (stable transfection), respectively. Western Blot and immunocytochemistry showed that P-gp expression was significantly and specifically inhibited. Resistance against doxorubicin was decreased from 162-fold to 109-fold (P < 0.05), 54-fold (P < 0.01) (transient transfection) and to 108-fold (P < 0.05), 50-fold (P < 0.01) (stable transfection). Furthermore, shRNA vectors significantly enhanced the cellular daunorubicin accumulation. The combination of shRNA vectors and doxorubicin significantly induced apoptosis in MCF-7/AdrR cells. CONCLUSIONS: shRNA expression vectors effectively reduce MDR expression in a sustained fashion and can restore the sensitivity of drug-resistant cancer cells to conventional chemotherapeutic agents.
