RESUMEN

Soil pollution by microplastics (MPs), defined as plastic particles <5 mm, and heavy metals is a significant environmental issue. However, studies on the co-contamination effects of MPs and heavy metals on buckwheat rhizosphere microorganisms, especially on the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community, are limited. We introduced low (0.01 g kg-1) and high doses of lead (Pb) (2 g kg-1) along with polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) MPs, both individually and in combination, into soil and assessed soil properties, buckwheat growth, and rhizosphere bacterial and AMF communities in a 40-day pot experiment. Notable alterations were observed in soil properties such as pH, alkaline hydrolyzable nitrogen (AN), and the available Pb (APb). High-dose Pb combined with PLA-MPs hindered buckwheat growth. Compared to the control, bacterial Chao1 richness and Shannon diversity were lower in the high dose Pb with PLA treatment, and differentially abundant bacteria were mainly detected in the high Pb dose treatments. Variations in bacterial communities correlated with APb, pH and AN. Overall, the AMF community composition remained largely consistent across all treatments. This phenomenon may be due to fungi having lower nutritional demands than bacteria. Stochastic processes played a relatively important role in the assembly of both bacterial and AMF communities. In summary, MPs appeared to amplify both the positive and negative effects of high Pb doses on the buckwheat rhizosphere bacteria.

The intentional binding effect refers to the phenomenon where the perceived temporal interval between a voluntary action and its sensory consequence is subjectively compressed. Prior research revealed the importance of tactile feedback from the keyboard on this effect. Here we examined the necessity of such tactile feedback by utilizing a touch-free key-press device without haptic feedback, and explored how initial/outcome sensory modalities (visual/auditory/tactile) and their consistency influence the intentional binding effect. Participants estimated three delay lengths (250, 550, or 850 ms) between the initial and outcome stimuli. Results showed that regardless of the combinations of sensory modalities between the initial and the outcome stimuli (i.e., modal consistency), the intentional binding effect was only observed in the 250 ms delay condition. This findings indicate a stable intentional binding effect both within and across sensory modalities, supporting the existence of a shared mechanism underlying the binding effect in touch-free voluntary actions.

In recent years, owing to the overuse and improper handling of antibiotics, soil antibiotic pollution has become increasingly serious and an environmental issue of global concern. It affects the quality and ecological balance of the soil and allows the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which threatens the health of all people. As a promising soil remediation technology, bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are superior to traditional technologies because of their simple operation, self-sustaining operation, easy control characteristics, and use of the metabolic processes of microorganisms and electrochemical redox reactions. Moreover, they effectively remediate antibiotic contaminants in soil. This review explores the application of BES remediation mechanisms in the treatment of antibiotic contamination in soil in detail. The advantages of BES restoration are highlighted, including the effective removal of antibiotics from the soil and the prevention of the spread of ARGs. Additionally, the critical roles played by microbial communities in the remediation process and the primary parameters influencing the remediation effect of BES were clarified. This study explores several strategies to improve the BES repair efficiency, such as adjusting the reactor structure, improving the electrode materials, applying additives, and using coupling systems. Finally, this review discusses the current limitations and future development prospects, and how to improve its performance and promote its practical applications. In summary, this study aimed to provide a reference for better strategies for BES to effectively remediate soil antibiotic contamination.

Childhood trauma and alexithymia are significant risk factors for adolescent mental health issues. Prior research has linked these factors to psychopathology, but the complexities of their interrelation remain underexplored. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between various forms of childhood trauma and alexithymia in adolescents with depressive and bipolar disorders. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and network analysis were utilized on data from 2343 Chinese adolescents (aged 12-18 years, 77.93% female) diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder. Measures included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). SEM demonstrated a significant correlation between childhood trauma and alexithymia. Network analysis identified emotional abuse and difficulty identifying feelings as central nodes. Emotional abuse emerged as a key factor for difficulty in emotional identification among adolescents. This study highlights the need for early intervention and the importance of emotional nurturing in childhood to prevent long-term socioemotional difficulties.

OBJECTIVES: Thoracic surgery is a complex field requiring advanced technical skills and critical decision-making. Surgical education must evolve to equip trainees with proficiency in new techniques and technologies. METHODS: This bibliometric analysis systematically reviewed 113 articles on thoracic surgery skills training published over the past decade, retrieved from databases including Web of Science. Publication trends, citation analysis, author and journal productivity, and keyword frequencies were evaluated. RESULTS: The United States contributed the most publications, led by pioneering institutions. Simulation training progressed from basic to sophisticated modalities and virtual reality emerged with transformative potential. Minimally invasive techniques posed unique learning challenges requiring integrated curricula. CONCLUSION: Ongoing investments in educational research and curriculum innovations are imperative to advance thoracic surgery training through multidisciplinary strategies. This study provides an evidentiary foundation to optimize training and address the complexities of modern thoracic surgery.

Rituximab (RTX) resistance is a notable challenge in treating diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). ß-Sitosterol (ß-ST) is a plant sterol that has been found in a broad variety of fruits, spices, and medicinal plants. The antineoplastic properties of ß-ST are established in various solid malignancies; however, its effect on DLBCL is uncharted. This study investigates the role of ß-ST in DLBCL as well as the underlying mechanisms. Our findings indicated that ß-ST impeded DLBCL cell proliferation in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. ß-ST appeared to alter sphingolipid metabolism, facilitate acid sphingomyelinase (ASM) translocation to the plasma membrane, augment ceramide platforms through increased ceramide synthesis, and consequently induce apoptosis in DLBCL cells. Furthermore, we found that RTX initiated both apoptotic and survival pathways in vitro, with the former contingent on the transient activation of the ASM, and ß-ST could amplify the anti-DLBCL efficacy of RTX by modulating ASM/Ceramide (Cer) signaling. Collectively, our findings elucidate the mechanistic role of ß-ST in DLBCL and underscore its potential in amplifying the antineoplastic efficacy of RTX via ASM activation, proposing a potential avenue to improve the efficacy of RTX therapy.

The process of carbohydrate metabolism and genetic information transfer is an important part of the study on the effects of the external environment on microbial growth and development. As one of the most significant environmental parameters, pH has an important effect on mycelial growth. In this study, the effects of environmental pH on the growth and nutrient composition of Aspergillus niger (A. niger) filaments were determined. The pH values of the medium were 5, 7, and 9, respectively, and the molecular mechanism was further investigated by transcriptomics and metabolomics methods. The results showed that pH 5 and 9 significantly inhibited filament growth and polysaccharide accumulation of A. niger. Further, the mycelium biomass of A. niger and the crude polysaccharide content was higher when the medium's pH was 7. The DEGs related to ribosome biogenesis were the most abundant, and the downregulated expression of genes encoding XRN1, RRM, and RIO1 affected protein translation, modification, and carbohydrate metabolism in fungi. The dynamic changes of pargyline and choline were in response to the oxidative metabolism of A. niger SICU-33. The ribophorin_I enzymes and DL-lactate may be important substances related to pH changes during carbohydrate metabolism of A.niger SICU-33. The results of this study provide useful transcriptomic and metabolomic information for further analyzing the bioinformatic characteristics of A. niger and improving the application in ecological agricultural fermentation.

Paper-based microfluidics combined with potentiometric measurement has emerged as an attractive approach for detecting various chemical ionic moieties. Detection of heavy metal ions, using paper substrates as solution sampling and delivery systems remains challenging despite efforts to introduce several physico-chemical paper substrate modifications to stop adsorption of ions onto the paper substrates. This study quantitatively investigates the adsorption of heavy metal ions on the paper substrates during paper-based potentiometric measurements and explains the super-Nernstian response of potentiometric sensors through local depletion of heavy metal ions from the solution. Consequently, based on the investigated ion adsorption, a corrective potential protocol was established for the electrodes coupled with paper-based solution sampling by predicting interference free sensor response from paper-based measurement. Furthermore, the ion adsorption was also recorded for mixed metal ion solutions to understand competitive primary/interfering ions adsorption onto the paper substrates and establish corrective measures to predict interference free sensor response. In this method, no modifications of the paper substrates are necessary before actual potentiometric measurements. The proposed corrective protocol allows prediction of sensor response based on the paper-based solution sampling potentiometric measurement, providing a simple methodological approach based on correction of potential readout of the potentiometric sensor, thus completely resigning from the need of modifying paper substrate for measurements of heavy metal ions.

Zirconia abutments and restorations have improved the aesthetic appeal of implant restoration, yet peri-implantitis poses a significant threat to long-term success. The soft tissue surrounding implants is a crucial biological barrier against inflammation and subsequent bone loss. Peri-implantitis, akin to periodontitis, progresses rapidly and causes extensive tissue damage. Variations in tissue structure significantly influence disease progression, particularly the lower vascular density in peri-implant connective tissue, compromising its ability to combat infection and provide essential nutrients. Blood vessels within this tissue are vital for healing, with angiogenesis playing a key role in immune defense and tissue repair. Enhancing peri-implant soft tissue angiogenesis holds promise for tissue integration and inflammation control. Microgroove surfaces have shown potential in guiding vessel growth, but using subtractive technologies to carve microgrooves on zirconia surfaces may compromise mechanical integrity. In this study, we utilized inkjet printing to prepare bioactive silk fibroin microgrooves (SFMG) coating with different sizes on zirconia surfaces. SFMG coating, particularly with 90 µm width and 10 µm depth, effectively directed human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) along microgrooves, promoting their proliferation, migration, and tube formation. The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A and fibroblast growth factor in HUVECs growing on SFMG coating was upregulated. Additionally, the SFMG coating activated the PI3K-AKT pathway and increased glycolytic enzyme gene expression in HUVECs. In conclusion, SFMG coating enhances HUVEC growth and angiogenesis potential by activating the PI3K-AKT pathway and glycolysis, showing promise for improving tissue integration and mitigating inflammation in zirconia abutments and restorations.

Sensory attenuation refers to the reduction in sensory intensity resulting from self-initiated actions compared to stimuli initiated externally. A classic example is scratching oneself without feeling itchy. This phenomenon extends across various sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, somatosensory, and nociceptive stimuli. The internal forward model proposes that during voluntary actions, an efferent copy of the action command is sent out to predict sensory feedback. This predicted sensory feedback is then compared with the actual sensory feedback, leading to the suppression or reduction of sensory stimuli originating from self-initiated actions. To further elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying sensory attenuation effect, we conducted an extensive meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) studies. Utilizing activation likelihood estimation (ALE) analysis, our results revealed significant activations in a prominent cluster encompassing the right superior temporal gyrus (rSTG), right middle temporal gyrus (rMTG), and right insula when comparing external-generated with self-generated conditions. Additionally, significant activation was observed in the right anterior cerebellum when comparing self-generated to external-generated conditions. Further analysis using meta-analytic connectivity modeling (MACM) unveiled distinct brain networks co-activated with the rMTG and right cerebellum, respectively. Based on these findings, we propose that sensory attenuation arises from the suppression of reflexive inputs elicited by self-initiated actions through the internal forward modeling of a cerebellum-centered action prediction network, enabling the "sensory conflict detection" regions to effectively discriminate between inputs resulting from self-induced actions and those originating externally.

In this study, a gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration system and hydroponic system (cultivating basil and lettuce) were combined for nutrient recovery from primary municipal wastewater. The GDM system was optimized by increasing the periodic air sparging flow rate from 1 to 2 L/min (∼15 hr per 3-4 days), resulting in a ∼52% reduction of irreversible fouling. However, the total fouling was not alleviated, and the water productivity remained comparable. The GDM-filtrated water was then delivered to hydroponic systems, and the effects of hydroponic operation conditions on plant growth and heavy metal uptake were evaluated, with fertilizer- and tap water-based hydroponic systems and soil cultivation system (with tap water) for comparison. It was found that (i) the hydroponic system under batch mode facilitated to promote vegetable growth with higher nutrient uptake rates compared to that under flow-through feed mode; (ii) a shift in nutrient levels in the hydroponic system could impact plant growth (such as plant height and leaf length), especially in the early stages. Nevertheless, the plants cultivated with the GDM-treated water had comparable growth profiles to those with commercial fertilizer or in soils. Furthermore, the targeted hazard quotient levels of all heavy metals for the plants in the hydroponic system with the treated water were greatly lower than those with the commercial fertilizer. Especially, compared to the lettuce, the basil had a lower heavy metal uptake capability and displayed a negligible impact on long-term human health risk, when the treated water was employed for the hydroponic system.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the three-dimensional stability and morphologic changes of tent space after the osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) procedures without bone grafts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six implants placed using the OSFE technique with simultaneous implant placement without bone grafts were included in this retrospective study. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of the augmented sinuses were obtained pre- and postoperatively up to 48 months of follow-up. The maxillary sinus cavity profiles were outlined using three-dimensional virtual reconstruction and superimposition of CBCT scans. The three-dimensional changes in the tent space were measured. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used to explore potential factors. RESULTS: The implant survival rate was 97.8%. The mean volume of remaining tent space immediately after surgery was 96.8 ± 70.5 mm3, shrinking to 31.0 ± 24.9 mm3 after 48 months, while the mean percentage of remaining tent space volume decreased to 29.1 ± 20.7%. The tent space volume and the percentage of residual tent space volume only decreased significantly within 12 months after surgery (p = .008, .013). GEE results indicated positive correlations between the percentage of remaining tent space volume and implant protrusion length (p = .000) and apical height (p = .000), with a negative correlation between the sinus floor area immediately after surgery (p = .002) and the healing time (p = .022). CONCLUSIONS: The volume of the tent space rapidly shrank after OSFE without bone grafts. Several factors might influence the tent space stability. Long-term clinical trials with larger sample sizes are necessary to further validate the results.

Background: Bedtime procrastination (BP) has become an important factor affecting individual well-being. This study aimed to assess the stability and changes in BP and examine risk and protective factors. Methods: The study recruited 1423 respondents. Latent profile analysis was used to identify subgroups of BP and latent transition analysis to determine transition probabilities for each subgroup. Logistic regression examined associations between identified classes and related factors. Results: Three subgroups of BP were identified. In terms of stability and changes, the moderate bedtime procrastination group showed the highest stability (66%), followed by the severe bedtime procrastination group (62.4%), and the mild bedtime procrastination group had a 52% probability of switching to moderate bedtime procrastination. In terms of influencing factors, more problematic phone use (PSU) (OR: 1.08; 95% CI = 1.05-1.12), more depression (OR: 1.17; 95% CI = 1.06-1.29) and anxiety (OR: 1.16; 95% CI = 1.05-1.28) are all factors that aggravate the transition from mild to moderate sleep procrastination. Similarly, PSU (OR: 1.15; 95% CI = 1.12-1.19), anxiety (OR: 1.10; 95% CI = 1.06-1.14), and depression (OR: 1.10; 95% CI = 1.06-1.14) increased the risk of severe bedtime procrastination. Self-control emerged as a protective factor against BP. Conclusion: This study identified three subgroups of BP at two time points and the rule of transition for each subgroup. Our findings indicate that BP were relatively stable, with some changes over time. The results also highlight the important function that PSU, depression, anxiety, and self-control can play in preventing and intervening in BP.

In plantae, basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors (TFs) are widespread and regulate a variety of biological processes under abiotic stress. However, it has not been extensively studied in Rosaceae, and the functional effects of bZIP on Eriobotrya japonica under salt stress are still unknown. Therefore, in this study, the bZIP TF family of 12 species of Rosaceae was analyzed by bioinformatics method, and the expression profile and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction of E. japonica under salt stress were analyzed. The results showed that a total of 869 bZIP TFs were identified in 12 species of Rosaceae and divided into nine subfamilies. Differences in promoter cis-elements between subfamilies vary depending on their role. Species belonging to the same subfamily have a similar number of chromosomes and the number of genes contained on each chromosome. Gene duplication analysis has found segmental duplication to be a prime force in the evolution of Rosaceae species. In addition, nine EjbZIPs were significantly different, including seven up-regulated and two down-regulated in E. japonica under salt stress. Especially, EjbZIP13 was involved in the expression of SA-responsive proteins by binding to the NPR1 gene. EjbZIP27, EjbZIP30, and EjbZIP38 were highly expressed in E. japonica under salt stress, thus improving the salt tolerance capacity of the plants. These results can provide a theoretical basis for exploring the characteristics and functions of the bZIP TF family in more species and breeding salt-tolerant E. japonica varieties. It also provides a reference for resolving the response mechanism of bZIP TF in 12 Rosaceae species under salt stress.

Overuse of enrofloxacin (ENR) has posed a potential threat to ecosystems and public health, so it is critical to sensitive and accurate determination of ENR residues. In this work, a novel ultra-sensitive and specific electrochemical aptasensor was fabricated based on the cobalt diselenide loaded gold and platinum nanoflowers (Au@Pt NFs/ CoSe2) and Exonuclease III (Exo III)-assisted cycle amplification strategy for the detection of ENR. Au@Pt NFs/ CoSe2 nanosheets as the substrate material, with large surface area, accelerate electron transfer and attach more DNA probes on the electrode substrate, have effectively enhanced the electrochemical performance of the electrode. With the existence of Enrofloxacin (ENR), the aptamer recognizes and binds to ENR, thus the signal probe cDNA was released and immobilized onto the electrode surface to hybridized with methylene blue (MB) labelled DNA (MB-DNA), thereby triggering the Exo III-assisted cycle for further signal amplification. As expected, the prepared aptasensor demonstrated excellent sensitivity and selectivity, with a wide linear range from 5.0 × 10-6 ng/mL to 1.0 × 10-2 ng/mL for ENR, a low detection limit of 1.59 × 10-6 ng/mL. Consequently, this strategy provided a promising avenue for ultrasensitive and accurate detection of ENR in milk samples.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the hygroscopic expansion characterization of resin composite dies during thermal cycling, and their influence on the fracture resistance of dental ceramic materials as well as the effect of pre-immersion on these measurements. METHODS: Disc-shaped specimens (φ = 15.0 mm, h = 1.2 mm) and anatomical crown dies of four resin composites (epoxy, Z350, P60, G10) were fabricated. Disc-shaped samples were continuously soaked in distilled water and the volume expansion was measured at different time point by Archimedes method. Disc-shaped samples were pre-immersed for 0, 7, or 30 days, elastic modulus and hardness were measured using Nanoindentation test; thermal cycling (TC) test was performed (5 °C-55 °C, 104 cycles), and volume expansion during TC was measured. Four kinds of resin die with pre-immersion for 0, 7, or 30 days were cemented to 5Y-Z crown, or epoxy dies without pre-immersion were cemented to 5Y-Z, 3Y-Z and lithium disilicate glass (LDG) crowns, and load-to-failure testing was performed before and after TC. Finite element analysis (FEA) and fractography analysis were also conducted. RESULTS: The hygroscopic expansion was in the order: epoxy > Z350 > P60 > G10. Except for G10, the other three resin composites exhibited different degrees of hygroscopic expansion during TC. Only the elastic modulus and hardness of epoxy decreased after water storage. However, only the fracture loads of 5Y-Z and LDG crowns supported by epoxy dies were significantly decreased after TC. FEA showed a stress concentration at the cervical region of the crown after volume expansion of the die, leading to the increase of the peak stress at the crown during loading. SIGNIFICANCE: Only the hygroscopic expansion of epoxy dies caused by TC led to the decrease in the fracture resistance of the 5Y-Z and LDG crown, which may be related to the decrease in the elastic modulus of the epoxy die and the tensile stress caused by it.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary high-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas(pHGNEC) encompassing small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) are clinically aggressive tumors with poor prognosis. The role of surgery and prognostic factors guiding management remain unclear. We aimed to analyze prognosis following resection and identify predictive variables. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 259 patients undergoing pHGNEC resection from 2001-2023. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier curves. Prognostic factors were assessed with Cox regression and visualized using nomogram tools. RESULTS: Minimally invasive surgery was associated with better OS (p = 0.001) and DFS (p = 0.001). Higher T stage predicted worse OS (T2 p = 0.044, T4 p = 0.007) and DFS (T2 p = 0.020, T4 p = 0.004). Advanced TNM stage III (OS p = 0.018; DFS p = 0.015) and IV (OS p < 0.001; DFS p < 0.001) also correlated with poorer prognosis. In the SCLC subgroup, elevated preoperative CEA independently predicted worse OS (p = 0.012) and DFS (p = 0.004). T4 disease (OS p < 0.001; DFS p = 0.002) and advanced TNM staging (stage III OS p = 0.043; DFS p = 0.045; stage IV OS p < 0.001, DFS p < 0.001) were associated with worse outcomes. In LCNEC patients, VATS resection improved OS (p = 0.048) and DFS (p = 0.027) despite conversion. Prior malignancy predicted worse OS (p < 0.001). Advanced TNM disease (stage III OS p = 0.047; stage IV OS p = 0.003, DFS p = 0.005) were also negative prognostic factors. The prognostic nomogram incorporating above variables effectively stratified risk. Calibration plots revealed good correlation between predicted and actual survival. CONCLUSIONS: We identified minimally invasive surgery, early TNM stage, younger age, and normal preoperative CEA as positive prognostic factors following pHGNEC resection. Our study provides an applicable prognostic nomogram to facilitate personalized pHGNEC management.

With the rapid development of implant techniques and digital technology, digital impressions have become a commonly used impression method in implant restoration. At present, the accuracy of intraoral digital impressions directly applied to implant-supported full-arch prostheses remains inadequate, which is due to the high accuracy requirement of full-arch implant impressions, while there are still technical challenges in intraoral digital impressions about recognition and stitching. In this regard, scholars have proposed a variety of scanning strategies to improve the accuracy of intraoral scan, including mucosal modifications, auxiliary devices and novel scan bodies. At the same time photogrammetry, as a new digital impression technique, has been developing steadily and exhibits promising accuracy. This article reviews the research progress on the accuracy of edentulous full-arch implant impressions and techniques which can improve the accuracy of intraoral digital impressions, to provide reference for clinical application.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this research is to pinpoint the top 100 most frequently referenced studies on sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer. METHODS: We identified the top 100 most frequently referenced studies on sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer by searching the Web of Science database. We extracted key information from the selected studies, including the author, journal, impact factor, type of article, year of publication, country, organization, and keyword. RESULTS: To the best of our understanding, this is the inaugural bibliometric study on sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer. The publication years of the top 100 most frequently referenced studies span from 1994 to 2022, with citation counts ranging from 51 to 795. The majority of the included studies are original (93/100) and primarily retrospective studies (82/93). The United States leads in terms of published articles and citations, with the Annals of Thoracic Surgery being the most frequently sourced journal (n = 27). High-density keywords primarily originate from limited resection, lobectomy, survival, carcinoma, recurrence, randomized trial, radiotherapy, lung cancer, outcome, 2 cm, as revealed by CiteSpace analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Our research compiles and analyzes the top 100 most frequently referenced studies in the field of sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer. The United States has the most published and cited works on this topic. Currently, the hot keywords for sublobectomy research are gradually shifting towards prognosis and obtaining better evidence-based medical evidence to demonstrate its value in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer.

It is crucial to discover novel antimicrobial drugs to combat resistance. This study investigated the antibacterial properties of halicin (SU3327), an AI-identified anti-diabetic drug, against 13 kinds of common clinical pathogens of animal origin, including multidrug-resistant strains. Employing minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assessments, halicin demonstrated a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect. Time-killing assays revealed its concentration-dependent bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 (E. coli ATCC 25922), Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 (S. aureus ATCC 29213), and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae S6 (APP S6) after 4 h of treatment at concentrations above the MIC. Halicin exhibited longer post-antibiotic effects (PAEs) and sub-MIC effects (PA-SMEs) for E. coli 25922, S. aureus 29213, and APP S6 compared to ceftiofur and ciprofloxacin, the commonly used veterinary antimicrobial agents, indicating sustained antibacterial action. Additionally, the results of consecutive passaging experiments over 40 d at sub-inhibitory concentrations showed that bacteria exhibited difficulty in developing resistance to halicin. Toxicology studies confirmed that halicin exhibited low acute toxicity, being non-mutagenic, non-reproductive-toxic, and non-genotoxic. Blood biochemical results suggested that halicin has no significant impact on hematological parameters, liver function, and kidney function. Furthermore, halicin effectively treated respiratory A. pleuropneumoniae infections in murine models. These results underscore the potential of halicin as a new antibacterial agent with applications against clinically relevant pathogens in veterinary medicine.
