The workforce is becoming increasingly heterogeneous in terms of age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, values, cognition, and culture. Thus, team diversity management is regarded as an important development strategy that organizations can use to gain advantages. However, in the diversity literature, empirical studies investigating the effects of cognitive diversity on creativity have not yielded conclusive findings. This has called into question the importance of team cognitive diversity. To address this, we investigate when and how team cognitive diversity fosters individual creativity. Drawing on the categorization-elaboration model (CEM) and literature on Chaxu climate, we develop a multilevel mediated moderation model in which the team Chaxu climate is treated as the moderator and team knowledge sharing is treated as the mediator. Using two-wave paired data collected from 46 teams and 368 members, we find that Chaxu climate mitigates the positive effect of team cognitive diversity on team knowledge sharing. In turn, team knowledge sharing mediates the interaction effect between team cognitive diversity and Chaxu climate on individual creativity. Our study facilitates a shift from an automatic-oriented lens to a contingent-oriented lens by identifying a new contingent factor and advances research on the underlying mechanisms by identifying a new process factor. Ultimately, this study enriches our knowledge on the function of cognitive diversity in the field of business strategy.

Accurate wind power prediction can increase the utilization rate of wind power generation and maintain the stability of the power system. At present, a large number of wind power prediction studies are based on the mean square error (MSE) loss function, which generates many errors when predicting original data with random fluctuation and non-stationarity. Therefore, a hybrid model for wind power prediction named IVMD-FE-Ad-Informer, which is based on Informer with an adaptive loss function and combines improved variational mode decomposition (IVMD) and fuzzy entropy (FE), is proposed. Firstly, the original data are decomposed into K subsequences by IVMD, which possess distinct frequency domain characteristics. Secondly, the sub-series are reconstructed into new elements using FE. Then, the adaptive and robust Ad-Informer model predicts new elements and the predicted values of each element are superimposed to obtain the final results of wind power. Finally, the model is analyzed and evaluated on two real datasets collected from wind farms in China and Spain. The results demonstrate that the proposed model is superior to other models in the performance and accuracy on different datasets, and this model can effectively meet the demand for actual wind power prediction.

In accordance with the similarity attraction paradigm, this paper investigates when and how proactive employees can be rated as proactive performers by proposing supervisor-subordinate marital status similarity as a relational moderator and leader-member exchange as the mediator. It therefore advances understanding of performance evaluation of proactive employees. Data from a sample of 471 Chinese employees and their 161 supervisors are used to examine the models hypothesized. The results show that LMX mediates the interaction effect between a proactive personality and supervisor-subordinate marital status similarity on supervisors' evaluations of proactive performance. When proactive employees and their supervisors have similar (dissimilar) marital status, the indirect relationship between proactive personality and supervisor-rated proactive performance via LMX is stronger (weaker). Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

As an East-Asian international study, we evaluated erythrocyte alloimmunity by gender and history of transfusion or pregnancy. In total, data from more than 1,826,000 patients were analyzed, from whom 26,170 irregular erythrocyte antibodies were detected in 22,653 cases. Antibody frequencies in these cases were as follows: anti-E, 26.8%; anti-Lea, 20.0%; anti-P1, 7.1%; anti-M, 6.4%; anti-Mia, 5.6%; anti-c + E, 5.6%; anti-Leb, 4.6%; anti-D, 2.8%; anti-Fyb, 2.6%; anti-Lea+Leb, 2.5%; anti-Dia, 2.0%; and others. For pregnant patients, anti-D (12.7%) was statistically more frequent. For transfused patients, anti-E (37.3%), anti-c + E (9.5%), anti-C + e (3.3%) and anti-Jka (3.1%) were significantly more frequent.

Background: Fluoroscopy-guided blockade of the greater occipital nerve (GON) is an accepted method for treating the symptoms of cervicogenic headaches (CGHs). However, the spread patterns among different injectate volumes of fluoroscopy-guided GON blocks are not well defined. Objective: A cadaveric study was established to determine the spread patterns of different volumes of dye injectate within a fluoroscopic GON block. Study Design. Cadaveric study. Setting. Xingtai Institute of Orthopaedics; Orthopaedic Hospital of Xingtai. Methods: 15 formalin-fixed cadavers with intact cervical spines were randomized in a 1 : 1 : 1 ratio to receive a fluoroscopy-guided GON injection of a 2, 3.5, or 5 ml volume of methylene blue. The suboccipital regions were dissected to investigate nerve involvement. Results: The suboccipital triangle regions, including the suboccipital nerves and GONs, were deeply stained in all cadavers. The third occipital nerve (TON) was stained in 7 of 10 administered 2 ml injections and in all the 3.5 ml and 5 ml injections. Compared to the 3 ml injectate group, the 5 mL cohort consistently saw injectate spreading to both superficial and distant muscles. Limitations. Given that cadavers were used in this study, cadaveric soft tissue composition and architecture can potentially become distorted and consequently affect injectate diffusion. Conclusions: A 3.5 or 5 mL fluoroscopy-guided GON injection of methylene blue successfully stains the GON, TON, and suboccipital nerves. This suggests that such an injection would generate blockade of all three nerve groups, which may contribute to the efficacy of the block for CGH. A volume of 3.5 ml may be enough for the performance of a fluoroscopy-guided GON block for therapeutic purposes.

Although substantive research has devoted increasing attention to variability in human resource practices at the organization, group, and individual levels, the critical role of line managers' leadership in predicting this variability in the human resource management delivery and implementation process has been overlooked. Drawing from social information processing theory and human resource (HR) attributions theory, this study proposes that authentic leadership moderates the positive relationship between department-level high-performance work systems and employee-perceived high-performance work systems. Moreover, employee-perceived high-performance work systems can enhance employees' thriving at work through commitment-focused HR attributions (well-being and performance). Analyzing the matched data from 145 departments and 834 employees, we found that the extent to which department-level high-performance work systems are positively related to employee-perceived high-performance work systems depends on authentic leadership within departments. We also found that employee-perceived high-performance work systems will result in commitment-focused HR attributions (well-being and performance), which in turn motivate employees to thrive at work. This study sheds light on whether and how line managers' leadership influences the HR management process.

Conventional storage conditions of erythrocytes cause storage lesions. We propose that hypoxic storage conditions, involving removal of oxygen and replacement with helium, the changes in stored erythrocytes under hypoxic condition were observed and assessed. Erythrocytes were divided into two equal parts, then stored in conventional and hypoxic conditions, separately. Blood gas analysis, hemorheology, and hemolysis were performed once a week. Energy metabolism and membrane damage were monitored by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Phosphatidylserine exposure was measured by flow cytometry. P50 was measured and the oxygen dissociation curve (ODC) plotted accordingly. Erythrocyte morphology was observed microscopically. In the 9th week of storage, the hemolysis of the hypoxia group was 0.7%; lower (p < .05) than that of the control group and still below the threshold of quality requirements. The dissolved oxygen and pO2 were only 1/4 of that in the control group (p < .01); the adenosine triphosphate, glucose, and lactic acid levels were decreased (p < .05), while the 2,3-diphosphoglycerate levels were increased relative to that in the control group (p < .01). There were no statistically significant differences in membrane damage, deformability, and aggregation between the two groups. In addition, the ODC of the two groups was shifted to the left but this difference was not statistically different. Basically similar to the effect of completely anaerobic conditions. Erythrocytes stored under hypoxic conditions could maintain a relatively stable state with a significant decrease in hemolysis, reduction of storage lesions, and an increase in shelf-life.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) is causing serious harm to human health worldwide. The aim of this research was to assess the prevalence and influencing factors of TTIs in Southwest China. METHODS: A retrospective study of blood donor records from January 2008 to December 2015 was conducted. All samples were screened for HBV, HCV, HIV and syphilis. The donor's data was recorded and analyzed statistically using SPSS software. RESULTS: We revealed that the prevalence of TTIs showed a decreasing trend from 2.39 to 1.98%, and this was slightly lower than that in other regions of China. Syphilis infection was the most serious issue among blood donors in Southwest China, which demonstrated a significantly higher rate than that in other areas of China. The high infection rate of the female and farmer groups in rural regions is worth noting. The logistic regression model showed that age, occupation and donor category was the influential factors for TTIs. CONCLUSIONS: The overall prevalence of TTIs demonstrated a decreasing trend from 2008 to 2015 in Southwest China, but there is still a sufficient threat to blood safety, and more efforts are needed to further guarantee blood safety in China.

Cryopreservation can slow down the metabolism and decrease the risk of bacterial contamination. But, chilled platelets (PLTs) show a reduced period in circulation due to the rapid clearance by hepatic cells or spleen macrophages after transfusion. The deleterious changes that PLTs undergo are mainly considered the result of PLT protein variation. However, the basis for proteomic variation of stored PLTs remains poorly understood. Besides count, activation markers (CD62P and Annexin V), and aggregation, we used quantitative mass spectrometry to create the first comprehensive and quantitative human PLT proteome of samples stored at different temperatures (22°C, 10°C and -80°C). We found different conditions caused different platelet storage lesion (PSL). PLT count was decreased no matter at what temperature stored. PLTs viability at low temperature dropped by 21.78% and 11.21%, respectively, as compared 10.26% at room temperature, there were no significant differences between the storage methods. Membrane expression of CD62P gradually increased in all groups especially stored at 22°C up to 40% and 10°C up to 30%. However, exposure of PS on the PLT membrane was below 1% in every group. The PLT proteome showed there were 575 and 454 potential proteins identified by general iTRAQ analysis and phosphorylation iTRAQ a nalysis, respectively, among them, 33 common differentially expressed proteins caused by storage time and 44 caused by storage temperature Especially, membrane-bound proteins (such as FERMT3, STX4, MYL9 and TAGLN2) played key roles in PLT storage lesion. The pathways "Endocytosis", "Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis" and "Regulation of actin cytoskeleton" were affected predominantly by storage time. And the pathways "SNARE interactions in vesicular transport" and "Vasopressin-regulated water reabsorption" were affected by cold storage in our study. Proteomic results can help us to understand PLT biochemistry and physiology and thus unravel the mechanisms of PSL in time and space for more successful PLT transfusion therapy.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to present a novel treatment strategy for Bennett fractures using a tension-band wiring technique performed through a small incision with loupes and a headlight. Additionally, this study compared this technique with the conventional percutaneous pinning technique. METHODS: Between January 2014 and January 2017, the tension-band wiring technique was used in 37 patients with Bennett fractures (study group). The range of motion, pinch and grip strengths, and hand function were assessed at the final follow-up. A control group comprising 35 patients treated with the percutaneous pinning technique was included in the study for comparison. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. (Clinical Trial Registration number: ISRCTN64894535 at http://www.isrctn.com/ISRCTN64894535 ) Results: No fixation failure or infection occurred in either group. Radiographic fracture healing was achieved in all cases. Follow-up lasted over 1 year. The mean Kapandji opposition score was 9.31 (range 8-10) points in the study group and 8.45 (range 7-10) points in the control group (p < 0.05). The mean Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand score was 1.06 (range 0-2) in the study group and 1.77 (range 0-3) in the control group (p < 0.05). The mean Smith and Cooney Score were 90 (range 80-100) in the study group and 85 (range 75-100) in the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The tension-band wiring technique using loupes and headlights enables reduction and fixation of Bennett fractures under direct visualization of the deep operative field. Restoration of thumb function using the tension-band wiring technique is significantly better than that observed with the conventional percutaneous pinning technique.

Bombay phenotype, H partially deficient non secretor phenotype and Para-Bombay phenotype are rare blood groups with deficiency or absence of H antigen. A 52-year-old female with Chronic suppurative otitis media was referred to our hospital. The primary serologic results of ABO blood typing were discrepant in forward and reverse grouping. Further, the saliva secretion tests, the pedigree studies and the sequence analysis were performed to confirm the rare phenotype. The patient was diagnosed as a variant H-deficient phenotype, secretor (para-bombay). Red cells of the patient have no H antigens, and it's a very interesting thing that there were two opposite results in the saliva test by using different anti-H. The test showed that H substances were present in the saliva by using anti-H from Libo Biotechnology Co, while which were absent by using anti-H from Shanghai blood center. The patient's Lewis phenotype was Le (a-b+). Anti-HI was present in the sera of her. The sequence of the ABO gene of the patient was 261delG and 467C>T heterozygote by direct DNA sequencing and was assigned as A102/O01. There were two mutations of the patient's FUT1, 328G/A and 658C/T, which were identified by DNA sequencing compared with the reference sequence (GenBank, NG_007510.2). In this case, we report a patient with particular H-deficient phenotype, secretor, which showed opposite results in the saliva test by using anti-H from different sources. We suspect that it is a variant of para-Bombay phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and reliable blood grouping is essential for safe blood transfusion. However, conventional methods are qualitative and use only single-antigen detection. We overcame these limitations by developing a simple, quantitative, and multiplexed detection method for blood grouping using quantum dots (QDs) and magnetic beads. METHODS: In the QD fluorescence assay (QFA), blood group A and B antigens were quantified using QD labeling and magnetic beads, and the blood groups were identified according to the R value (the value was calculated with the fluorescence intensity from dual QD labeling) of A and B antigens. The optimized performance of QFA was established by blood typing 791 clinical samples. RESULTS: Quantitative and multiplexed detection for blood group antigens can be completed within 35 min with more than 105 red blood cells. When conditions are optimized, the assay performance is satisfactory for weak samples. The coefficients of variation between and within days were less than 10% and the reproducibility was good. The ABO blood groups of 791 clinical samples were identified by QFA, and the accuracy obtained was 100% compared with the tube test. Receiver-operating characteristic curves revealed that the QFA has high sensitivity and specificity toward clinical samples, and the cutoff points of the R value of A and B antigens were 1.483 and 1.576, respectively. CONCLUSION: In this study, we reported a novel quantitative and multiplexed method for the identification of ABO blood groups and presented an effective alternative for quantitative blood typing. This method can be used as an effective tool to improve blood typing and further guarantee clinical transfusion safety.

Alterations in the morphologic and mechanical properties of red blood cells (RBCs) are considered direct indicators of blood quality. Current measures of characterizing these properties in vivo are limited by the complicated hemodynamic environment. To better evaluate the quality of fresh and stored blood, a new research platform was constructed to evaluate the hemodynamic characteristics of RBCs. The research platform consists mostly of a microfluidic chip, microscope, and ultrahigh-speed simultaneous framing optical electronic camera (USFOEC). The microfluidic chip was designed to simplify the complicated hemodynamic environment. The RBCs were diluted in erythrocyte preservative fluid and infused into the microfluidic channels. After approximately 600× magnification of using the microscope and camera, the RBCs' dynamic images were captured by the USFOEC. Eight sequential and blur-free images were simultaneously captured by the USFOEC system. Results showed that RBC deformation changed with flow velocity and stored RBCs were less sensitive to deformation (Kfresh < Kstored ). The frozen-stored RBCs were better able to sustain hydrodynamic stress (DI49day = 0.128 vs. DIfrozen = 0.118) than cold-stored RBCs but more sensitive to variations in flow speed (K49day = 1626.2 vs. Kfrozen = 1318.2). Results showed that the stored RBCs had worse deformability than fresh RBCs, but frozen-stored RBCs may incur less damage during storage than those stored at merely cold temperatures. This USFOEC imaging system can serve as a platform for direct observation of cell morphological and mechanical properties in a medium similar to a physiologic environment. © 2016 International Society for Advancement of Cytometry.

Diverse Streptococcus species including Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Sanguis, Gordonii, Mitis and Mutans cause life-threatening conditions including pneumonia, bacteremia and meningitis. These diseases bear a high morbidity and mortality and for this reason, understanding the key events in the pathogenesis of these infections have a great significance in their prevention and/or treatment. Here, we describe as how the activation of the platelets and their affinity to bind to bacterial proteins act as early key events in the pathogenesis of Streptococcal infections.

BACKGROUND: The induction of hematopoietic stem cells to produce mass numbers of platelets (PLTs) in vitro is an effective method to address a lack of PLTs and PLT transfusion resistance in the clinic. However, the design of a low-cost and sustainable culture system is currently problematic. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Here, the thrombopoietin, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-11 genes, three regulatory factors important for thrombopoiesis, were used to construct self-splicing fusion genes linked by foot and mouth disease (F2A) and Theiler's murine encephalitis (T2A) viruses. Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) transduced with the fusion gene acted as nourishing cells and induced cord blood mononuclear cells (MNCs) to generate PLTs in vitro. We counted these cells; determined the percentage of cells expressing specific cell surface markers (CD41); and measured their ability to aggregate via flow cytometry, immunohistochemical staining, and aggregation remote analyzer. RESULTS: BMSCs transduced with the fusion gene successfully induced cord blood MNCs to generate PLT-sized fragments in the absence of exogenous cytokines. The output was higher than that of the control groups, and the PLT-sized fragments were similar to endogenous PLTs in terms of shape, CD41 expression, and aggregation function. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that our method could be used to develop a low-cost sustainable cultivation system that generates PLTs in vitro by enhancing the autocrine production of related cytokines through the nourishment provided by cells transduced with a syncretic gene.

Trehalose is widely used as a cryoprotective reagent to preserve various cells. Platelet additive solution-III (PAS) has been used to maintain platelet function, benefit the virus inactivation, and extend the storage period. PAS with trehalose (PAS-III M + T) may effectively protect platelets (PLTs) at a relatively low temperature (10 °C). The apheresis PLTs from six donors were divided into two groups. Group A was stored in PAS-III M + T at 10 °C as experimental group and group B in plasma at 22 °C as control group. The samples were collected on different storage dates, and multiple parameters were determined or investigated for in vitro studies. The in vivo recovery and survival of rabbit PLTs stored in the same conditions, and then labeled with (51)Cr were measured and evaluated using a rabbit model of thrombocytopenia. Over 9 days, P-selectin expression increased significantly in a time-dependent manner in both groups (n = 6). The levels of the hypotonic shock reaction and PLT aggregation rate decreased in both groups and were significantly higher in group A than B after 1 day of storage. The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and glucose (GLU) consumption increased similarly, but the levels were significantly lower in group A than B. The pH decreased significantly after 5 days of storage in group B but did not change in group A. After 5 days, the morphology of the PLTs in group B maintained a more normal shape than that of group A. The recovery and survival of PLTs stored in both groups were not significantly different (p > 0.05). The bacteria growth was not examined out in both groups for up to 5 (group A) and 9 (group B) days. Storage of PLTs in the modified PAS at low temperature was more effective in protecting PLT functions than that of standard storage method and may have the potential to decrease the risk of PLT activation and bacterial contamination.

Background. The use of plasma frozen within 24 hrs is likely to increase. Whole blood (WB) and buffy coats (BCs) can be held for a few hrs or overnight before processing. Methods. Twenty-four bags of WB for plasma and 12 bags for platelet (PLT) concentrates were collected. The fresh frozen plasma (FFP) was prepared within 6 hrs. I-FP24 and II-FP24 samples were prepared either from leukodepleted WB that was held overnight or from WB that was held overnight before leukodepletion. The PLT concentrates (PCs) were prepared from BCs within 6 hrs (PC1) and within 18 to 24 hrs (PC2). The typical coagulation factors and some biochemical parameters were determined. Results. Compared to the FFP samples, the levels of FVII and FVIII in the I-FP24 and II-FP24 samples decreased significantly. The pH, Na(+), LDH, and FHb levels differed significantly between II-FP24 and FFP. Compared to PC1, PC2 exhibited lower pH, pO2, and Na(+) levels, a higher PLT count, and increased pCO2, K(+), Lac, and CD62P expression levels. Conclusion. FP24 is best prepared from WB that was stored overnight at 4°C and then leukodepleted and separated within 24 hrs. PCs are best produced from BCs derived from WB that was held overnight at room temperature.

RESUMEN

Five purine and carboline alkaloids were isolated from the methanol extract of the ascidian Symplegma oceania. Classic chromatographies including preparative HPLC were used for isolation and purification of the compounds. The structures were established as 6-methoxy-7-methyl-8-oxoguanine (1), 2-methylimino-3-methyl-6-methylamino- 9H-purine (2), 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-betacarboline (3), 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-methyl-beta-carboline (4) and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acid (5) by comparison the spectroscopic data (MS, 1H, 13C-NMR) with those reported in the literatures. Compounds 2-5 were reported from the the genus Symplegma for the first time. The purine and carboline were the major alkaloid types of S. oceania.

BACKGROUND: Despite their wide occurrence, cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis are considered neglected diseases by the World Health Organization. The epidemiology of these diseases and microsporidiosis in humans in developing countries is poorly understood. The high concentration of pathogens in raw sewage makes the characterization of the transmission of these pathogens simple through the genotype and subtype analysis of a small number of samples. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The distribution of genotypes and subtypes of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi in 386 samples of combined sewer systems from Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan and the sewer system in Qingdao in China was determined using PCR-sequencing tools. Eimeria spp. were also genotyped to assess the contribution of domestic animals to Cryptosporidium spp., G. duodenalis, and E. bieneusi in wastewater. The high occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. (56.2%), G. duodenalis (82.6%), E. bieneusi (87.6%), and Eimeria/Cyclospora (80.3%) made the source attribution possible. As expected, several human-pathogenic species/genotypes, including Cryptosporidium hominis, Cryptosporidium meleagridis, G. duodenalis sub-assemblage A-II, and E. bieneusi genotype D, were the dominant parasites in wastewater. In addition to humans, the common presence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Eimeria spp. from rodents indicated that rodents might have contributed to the occurrence of E. bieneusi genotype D in samples. Likewise, the finding of Eimeria spp. and Cryptosporidium baileyi from birds indicated that C. meleagridis might be of both human and bird origins. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The distribution of Cryptosporidium species, G. duodenalis genotypes and subtypes, and E. bieneusi genotypes in urban wastewater indicates that anthroponotic transmission appeared to be important in epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and microsporidiosis in the study areas. The finding of different distributions of subtypes between Shanghai and Wuhan was indicative of possible differences in the source of C. hominis among different areas in China.

AIM: CD26 is a type II transmembrane protein with dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) activity expressed on a variety of cell types. Recent studies have indicated that CD26 or enzymatic activity levels were previously associated with immune-mediated disorders. As immunoregulation is very important for a successful pregnancy, we hypothesize that CD26 may play an important role during pregnancy, and herein, we sought to determine the association between circulating levels of soluble CD26 (sCD26) and pregnancy outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, a stable hybridoma cell line 1F1 was produced by fusion of murine splenocytes and myeloma cells. An indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA) was developed for the detection of the maternal plasma sCD26. We measured the plasma levels of sCD26 in 80 normal pregnant women and 45 non-pregnant women. RESULTS: Our results indicated that the plasma level of sCD26 was significantly higher in the pregnant group (P < 0.001) than that in the non-pregnant group. CONCLUSION: These findings hinted that CD26 may play a role in successful pregnancy and it is not an absolute surrogate marker for the Th1-type immunity as the dominant Th2-type immunity during pregnancy.
