RESUMEN

Coreopsis tinctoria (CT) improves energy metabolism. However, the role of CT in alleviating obesity-induced hyperglycemia by targeting the liver remains unknown. Therefore, this article aims to explore the mechanism by which CT improves energy metabolism and resists hyperglycemia. The water and ethanol extracts of CT were administered to high-fat diet-induced (HFD) obese C57BL/6J mice at a dose of 4 g/kg.bw (low-dose water extract, WL; low-dose ethanol extract, EL) or 10 g/kg.bw (high-dose water extract, WH; high-dose ethanol extract, EH). Mice that consumed a maintenance diet (LFD) were included as blank controls. Network pharmacology, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), L02 cell cultivation, and liver transcriptomics were used to examine the mechanism and functional components of CT against obesity-induced hyperglycemia. The results indicated that WL significantly (p < 0.05) alleviated glucose intolerance and insulin resistance in obesity-induced hyperglycemia. Kaempferol is the main active compound of CT, which demonstrated significant (p < 0.05) anti-hyperglycemic effects in obese mice and L02 cells. Finally, kaempferol significantly (p < 0.05; fold change >1.2) shifted the genes involved in carbon metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways toward the trend of LFD, indicating that it exerts an anti-hyperglycemic effect through these molecular mechanisms. Overall, oral intake of CT lowers blood glucose and improves insulin sensitivity in mice with obesity-induced hyperglycemia. Kaempferol is the primary functional component of CT.

RESUMEN

Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common pathogen that colonizes the human upper respiratory tract, causing high morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence status of S. pneumoniae isolated from patients of all ages in Southwest China, including serotype, antibiotic susceptibility and other molecular characteristics, to provide a basis for clinical antibiotic usage and vaccine development. Methods: This study was conducted from January 2018 to March 2022 at West China Hospital, West China Second University Hospital, First People's Hospital of Longquanyi District (West China Longquan Hospital), Meishan Women and Children's Hospital (Alliance Hospital of West China Second University Hospital) and Chengdu Jinjiang Hospital for Women and Children Health. Demographic and clinical characteristics of 263 pneumococcal disease (PD) all-age patients were collected and analyzed. The serotypes, sequence types (STs), and antibiotic resistance of the strains were determined by next-generation sequencing, sequence analysis and the microdilution broth method. Results: The most common pneumococcal serotypes were 19F (17.87%), 19A (11.41%), 3 (8.75%), 23F (6.46%) and 6A (5.70%). Coverage rates for PCV10, PCV13, PCV15, PCV20 and PCV24 were 36.12, 61.98, 61.98, 63.12 and 64.26%, respectively. Prevalent STs were ST271 (12.55%), ST320 (11.79%), ST90 (4.18%), ST876 (4.18%) and ST11972 (3.42%). Penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae (PRSP) accounted for 82.35 and 1.22% of meningitis and nonmeningitis PD cases, respectively. Resistance genes msrD (32.7%), mefA (32.7%), ermB (95.8%), tetM (97.3%) and catTC (7.6%) were found among 263 isolates. Most isolates showed high resistance to erythromycin (96.96%) and tetracycline (79.85%), with more than half being resistant to SXT (58.94%). A few isolates were resistant to AMX (9.89%), CTX (11.03%), MEN (9.13%), OFX (1.14%), LVX (1.14%) and MXF (0.38%). All isolates were susceptible to vancomycin and linezolid. Conclusion: Our study provides reliable information, including the prevalence, molecular characterization and antimicrobial resistance of S. pneumoniae isolates causing pneumococcal diseases in Southwest China. The findings contribute to informed and clinical policy decisions for prevention and treatment.

RESUMEN

Ramie (Boehmeria nivea L.) is an ideal crop for cadmium (Cd) pollution remediation due to its advantages of both remediating and utilizing, however, it is mainly carried out in dry land, whose restoration effect is relatively slow. Previously, we found that the ramie plants cultivated by hydroponics has several tens of times higher Cd absorption capacity than that planted in soil. However, the issue of how to use hydroponic ramie to remediate Cd contaminated paddy fields needs to be addressed. In this study, we innovatively developed the ramie floating island technology and studied its remediation model on simulated Cd contaminated paddy fields. Different ramie varieties were used to compare the remediation effects, and the results showed that there were differences in adaptability among different varieties on floating islands and the remediation ability of the tested ramie varieties was Z2 > Z1 > Z3. Different harvested times were set to analyze the effects of harvested model on remediation, and it was suggested that multiple harvests can be carried out according to the plant growth status of ramie floating island after 30 days of remediation to achieve better remediation effects. Low water level height (5 cm) of paddy field was beneficial for the accumulation of Cd in the roots, but considering the adaptability of various ramie varieties and the effect of long-term restoration, it was recommended that the water level height of 20 cm for the cultivation of ramie floating island was more suitable. Moreover, we found that low concentration of citric acid (≤2 g L-1) or polyaspartic acid (≤3 g L-1) can improve the remediation effects for ramie floating island. Our study opens up a novel approach for ramie to remediate heavy metal pollution and provides a technical reference for water body Cd remediation by plants.

RESUMEN

There are several technical challenges and public issues concerning genome editing applications before they become viable in commercial aquaculture. Recently, we developed a novel strategy to generate all-female (AF) common carp, which exhibited a growth advantage over the control carp, using genetic editing through single gene-targeting manipulation. Here, we found that the body weight of the AF common carp was higher by 22.58% than that of the control common carp. Because the genotype of the AF common carp was cyp17a1+/-;XX, the contents of sex steroids were normally synthesized, as they were comparable to that of the control female carp. To evaluate the food safety of the AF carp, Wistar rats were fed a diet containing control female carp (control, C) or all-female (AF) carp at an incorporation rate of 5, 10 and 20% (w/w) for 90 days. Compared with those fed control carp, the rats fed AF common carp exhibited no significant difference in body weight, food intake, feed conversion ratio, hematology, serum biochemistry, urine test, relative organ weight, gross necropsy, and histopathological examination. This is the first food safety assessment of the farmed fish strain cultured using CRISPR/Cas9, which will further advance the fishery development of genome-edited animals.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute recommends rejecting hemolyzed samples for coagulation tests. Sysmex CS5100 analyzer using an optical method is commonly used in laboratories. The influence of hemolysis on coagulation test has rarely been studied when tested on Sysmex CS5100. Determining this influence is necessary. METHODS: Freshly collected samples were artificially hemolyzed to simulate the hemolysis processes. Coagulation tests were conducted on a Sysmex CS5100 coagulation analyzer. Detection values before and after hemolysis were compared. RESULTS: The results showed that after hemolysis detection, the prothrombin time (PT) statistically decreased, while the partial thromboplastin time (APTT) statistically increased. There were no significant differences in fibrinogen (Fg), thrombin time (TT), D-dimer (DD) or fibrinogen degradation products (FDPs). Antithrombin activity was elevated in hemolyzed samples. CONCLUSIONS: Although differences in PT and APTT were statistically significant, there was no need for rejection of hemolyzed samples due to insufficient clinical effects when tested on Sysmex CS5100 analyzer. Falsely elevated AT result may lead to misdiagnosis in patients with severe diseases, which should be carefully considered.

RESUMEN

Menthol, a widely used natural, active compound, has recently been shown to have anticancer activity. Moreover, it has been found to have a promising future in the treatment of various solid tumors. Therefore, using literature from PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Ovid, ScienceDirect, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases, the present study reviewed the anticancer activity of menthol and the underlying mechanism. Menthol has a good safety profile and exerts its anticancer activity via multiple pathways and targets. As a result, it has gained popularity for significantly inhibiting different types of cancer cells by various mechanisms such as induction of apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, disruption of tubulin polymerization, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis. Owing to the excellent anticancer activity menthol has demonstrated, further research is warranted for developing it as a novel anticancer agent. However, there are limitations and gaps in the current research on menthol, and its antitumor mechanism has not been completely elucidated. It is expected that more basic experimental and clinical studies focusing on menthol and its derivatives will eventually help in its clinical application as a novel anticancer agent.

RESUMEN

Draconis Sanguis is a precious Chinese medicinal material for activating blood and resolving stasis, and its effective components are flavonoids. However, the structural diversity of flavonoids in Draconis Sanguis brings great challenges to the in-depth chara-cterization of its chemical composition profiles. To clarify the substance basis of Draconis Sanguis, ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) was used in this study to acquire MS data of Draconis Sanguis. The molecular weight imprinting(MWI) and mass defect filtering(MDF) were developed for rapid screening of flavonoids in Draconis Sanguis. Full-scan MS and MS~2 were recorded within the mass range m/z 100-1 000 in positive ion mode. Accor-ding to previous literature, MWI was employed to hunt for reported flavonoids in Draconis Sanguis, and the mass tolerance range of [M+H]~+ was set as ±10×10~(-3). A five-point MDF screening frame was further constructed to narrow the screening range of flavonoids from Draconis Sanguis. Combined with diagnostic fragment ions(DFI) and neutral loss(NL) as well as mass fragmentation pathways, 70 compounds were preliminarily identified from the extract of Draconis Sanguis, including 5 flavan oxidized congeners, 12 flavans, 1 dihydrochalcones, 49 flavonoids dimers, 1 flavonoids trimer and 2 flavonoid derivatives. This study clarified the chemical composition of flavonoids in Draconis Sanguis. Moreover, it also showed that high-resolution MS combined with data post-processing methods such as MWI and MDF could achieve rapid characterization of the chemical composition in Chinese medicinal materials.

RESUMEN

The neurocognitive mechanism by which automatic emotion regulation (AER) affects emotion processing remains understudied in the context of psychopathology, such as depression. Participants with sub-clinical depression and healthy controls were randomly assigned to an emotion regulation priming group or a neutral priming group. All participants completed an emotional Go/No-go task by judging the gender of angry or happy faces. During the Go/No-go task, each trial was preceded by subliminal presentation of words describing emotion regulation goals or neutral goals as a manipulation of priming. The behavioral results showed that compared with neutral priming, subliminal priming of regulation goals increased the accuracy in No-go trials with angry faces only for sub-clinically depressed participants. In the ERP results, the main effect of regulation priming was significant in sub-clinically depressed participants, such that showing subliminal priming of regulation goals decreased the amplitude of N2 compared to the neutral priming. Similarly, for the sub-clinically depressed participants, regulation goal priming evoked smaller P3 in response to angry faces than to happy faces. No such pattern was found in neutral goal priming condition or for healthy controls. According to the automotive model of emotion regulation, once goals or norms related to emotion regulations are formed in the mind, a related regulation response could be activated without awareness. Our results suggest that subliminal priming of regulation goals could change the response inhibition to angry faces in sub-clinically depressed participants.

RESUMEN

AIM: To observe the surgical effects of slanted bilateral lateral recession (S-BLR) versus conventional bilateral lateral recession (C-BLR) in convergence insufficiency intermittent exotropia (CI-IXT). METHODS: Using a randomized, double-blind, prospective design, 22 patients with CI-IXT who were admitted to Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from July 2019 to December 2020 were included. Patients were randomly divided into either S-BLR or C-BLR group for their subsequent strabismus surgery. All patients were followed up for 12mo. Near deviation, distant deviation, and near-distance difference (NDD) were measured in all patients. RESULTS: Twelve months after surgery, NDD improvement was 10 (8, 13) prismatic degrees (PD) in S-BLR group and 3 (1, 6) PD in C-BLR group (P=0.011). The near deviation of S-BLR group was 0 (-2, 2) PD, while that of C-BLR group was -4 (-6, -3) PD (P=0.005). Before and after surgery, the difference in the distant deviation between the two groups was not statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference in near stereopsis between the two groups (P=0.380) at 12mo. The success rate at 12mo after operation was 90.91% and 72.73% in the two groups (P=0.280). CONCLUSION: CI-IXT patients treated with S-BLR have better surgical outcomes than those treated with C-BLR, which indicates S-BLR is a safe and effective operation pattern.

RESUMEN

AIM: To investigate the effects of micro-injection of botulinum toxin A (BTXA) on acute acquired comitant esotropia (AACE). METHODS: A total of 33 AACE patients who underwent BTXA micro-injection at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from September 1st, 2019 to July 1st, 2021 were retrospective analyzed. Esotropia, eye alignment, stereopsis, and complications were examined at baseline (except complications), 1wk, 1, 3, and 6mo after injection. RESULTS: The average angle of deviation before injection was (+20.24±6.80)Δ at near and (+24.76±6.43)Δ at distance, while (+5.15±5.85)Δ at near and (+7.30±6.17)Δ at distance 6mo after treatment (P<0.05). Six months after injection, the stereopsis of patients had improved. The number of patients having no stereopsis (>800 seconds of arc) decreased from 11 to 3. The number of patients having peripheral stereopsis (300-800 seconds of arc), macular stereopsis (70-200 seconds of arc) and central concave stereopsis (≤60 seconds of arc) increased from 10 to 11, 10 to 12, and 2 to 7, respectively. At the follow-ups at 1wk, 1, 3, and 6mo after injection, success rates were 96.97%, 96.97%, 93.94% and 87.88%, respectively. One week after injection, two patients (6.07%) showed subconjunctival hemorrhage; three patients (9.09%) showed limited eye movement and one patient (3.03%) showed mild vertical strabismus. All the symptoms disappeared by the final follow-up. CONCLUSION: Micro-injection of BTXA can reduce diplopia and improve binocular vision function of AACE patients. Furthermore, the operation is relatively safe with few complications, making it an ideal treatment modality for AACE.

RESUMEN

A VO2-assisted temperature-controlled multifunctional metamaterial polarization converter with large asymmetric transmission (AT) is proposed by introducing a gold-VO2 grating. The converter can be switched between reflection mode and transmission mode by controlling the phase transition. When VO2 is in the metallic state, the converter works in reflection mode, converting the incident forward/backward linearly/circularly polarized waves into the cross-polarized waves, and the broadband polarization conversion rates (PCRs) can reach 90% with relative bandwidth of up to 91.1% and 87.5%, respectively; when VO2 is in the insulating state, the converter shows giant AT effect for circularly polarized waves at 0.64 THz and 1.28 THz. The multifunctional polarization converter holds great potential in the fields of communication and imaging, which provides a new way to design optical devices such as polarizers, isolators.

RESUMEN

Under normal circumstances, wound healing can be summarized as three processes. These include inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. The vast majority of wounds heal rapidly; however, a large percentage of nonhealing wounds have still not been studied significantly. The factors affecting wound nonhealing are complex and diverse, and identifying an effective solution from nature becomes a key goal of research. This study aimed to highlight and review the mechanisms and targets of natural products (NPs) for treating nonhealing wounds. The results of relevant studies have shown that the effects of NPs are associated with PI3K-AKT, P38MAPK, fibroblast growth factor, MAPK, and ERK signaling pathways and involve tumor growth factor (TNF), vascular endothelial growth factor, TNF-α, interleukin-1ß, and expression of other cytokines and proteins. The 25 NPs that contribute to wound healing were systematically summarized by an inductive collation of the six major classes of compounds, including saponins, polyphenols, flavonoids, anthraquinones, polysaccharides, and others, which will further direct the attention to the active components of NPs and provide research ideas for further development of new products for wound healing.

RESUMEN

Objective: The application of botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) in the treatment of paralytic strabismus has been recognized, but there are few studies on the treatment of acute acquired comitant esotropia (AACE). This study was aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of AACE and compare the therapeutic effects of BTXA and traditional surgery. Methods: 78 patients with AACE in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University between March 2019 and March 2021 were reviewed. The relevant medical records of the patients were collected, and they were divided into surgical group (n = 46) and botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) group (n = 32) according to different treatment approaches. The surgical group was treated with squint correction, whereas the BTXA group was treated with microinjection of BTXA in MR. Eye alignment, esotropia, stereopsis, and complications were examined before and after treatment in both groups. Results: The refractive status of 78 patients with AACE was mostly myopic refractive error. In general, the angle of esotropia at distance was larger than which at near, with a statistically significant difference. At follow-up assessments of 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after treatment, the total effective rates of the surgical group and the BTXA group were 100% and 90.48%, respectively. The residual angle of esotropia of both groups was lower after treatment. Additionally, the incidence rate of complications in the BTXA group was significantly lower than that in the surgical group. Conclusion: AACE occurs mostly in people with myopic refractive errors and is associated with prolonged near work. Besides surgical treatment, micro-injection of BTXA is also an effective and safe treatment for AACE.

RESUMEN

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Acute acquired comitant esotropia (AACE) is characterised by the acute onset of diplopia which affects work and life. BACKGROUND: To describe the clinical characteristics and discuss the aetiology of acute acquired comitant esotropia. METHODS: The medical records of 51 patients with AACE were retrospectively analysed, and their age, occupation, daily average time spent on near work, angle of deviation, refractive error and aetiology were analysed. RESULTS: The age at onset of AACE was eight to 55 years. Thirty-nine patients were aged 12 to 36 years (76.5%), and 42 patients (82.4%) were myopic. The angle of deviation was 20Δ (12Δ to 35Δ) during near fixation and 25Δ (18Δ to 40Δ) during distance fixation. The deviation during distance fixation was larger than that during near fixation, the difference being statistically significant (p < 0.001). The daily average time of near work before onset was 9.0 h (8.0 h to 10.0 h); 35 patients (68.6%) spent more than 8 h performing near work. Their occupations included students, accountants, information technology staff, and those who required electronic use for a long time. There is no correlation between the angle of deviation and the time of near work (p > 0.05). Among the 51 patients, three had intracranial diseases. Diplopia resolved in 47 cases following treatment. The angle of deviation post-treatment was 0Δ (0Δ to 5Δ) during near and 0Δ (0Δ to 3Δ) during distance fixation. CONCLUSION: AACE occurs mostly in myopic older children and adults. The onset of esotropia is related to long-term near work. AACE patients mostly present an angle of deviation that is larger during distance than near fixation. Intracranial disease is an infrequent but important cause of AACE that needs to be excluded in all cases.

RESUMEN

Isomers are widely distributed in Chinese herbal medicines, and can be discriminated by energy-resolved mass spectrometry( ER-MS). However,ER-MS was performed through direct injection of reference compounds with syringe pump, which encountered a significant technical barrier for high-throughput and automated measurements. Herein, online ER-MS was conducted using LC-MS platform, and a pair of isomers, kaempferol vs luteolin, were employed as a case study to illustrate and assess the utility of online ER-MS for isomeric discrimination. High-resolution tandem mass spectrometry data of both flavonoids were acquired on LC-QE-Orbitrap-MS,and the fragmentation pathways responsible for the primary fragment ions were proposed. The primary signal in MS1 occurred at m/z 285( [M-H]-),and the primary signals of either compound generated by retro-Diels-Alder fragmentation were observed at m/z 151 and 133. The spectral information was subsequently transferred onto LC-Qtrap-MS platform to carry out online ER-MS. Two precursor-to-product ion transition candidates were constructed as m/z 285>151 and 285>133,and either afterward derived a set of pseudo-ion transitions( PITs) and so forth, exactly corresponding to a series of progressive collision energies( eg-5,-8,-11 e V,and so on). All PITs were typed into the monitoring list of multiple reaction monitoring program to generate the peak area datasets. Either dataset was normalized using the highest values in the set and imported into Graph Pad Prism software to plot the Gaus-sian-shaped curve that was termed as the break-down graph. The apex of the regressive curve was termed as optimal collision energy( OCE). The OCE values corresponding to m/z 285>151 were calculated as-29. 06 e V and-35. 71 e V for kaempferol and luteolin, respectively. In the case of m/z 285>133,the OCEs were yielded as-44. 15 e V for kaempferol and-49. 01 e V for luteolin. With re-ference to their chemical structures, the location of hydroxyl group was regarded to be responsible for the differences of either m/z 285>151 or 285>133 between the isomers, attributing to their different bond properties. Above all, online ER-MS offers an eligible tool for isomeric discrimination, and provides meaningful information for the accurate chemical composition characterization based on LC-MS,which is not limited to Chinese herbal medicines.

RESUMEN

Quantum key distribution provides secure keys resistant to code-breaking quantum computers. The continuous-variable version of quantum key distribution offers the advantages of higher secret key rates in metropolitan areas, as well as the use of standard telecom components that can operate at room temperature. However, the transmission distance of these systems (compared with discrete-variable systems) are currently limited and considered unsuitable for long-distance distribution. Herein, we report the experimental results of long distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 202.81 km of ultralow-loss optical fiber by suitably controlling the excess noise and employing highly efficient reconciliation procedures. This record-breaking implementation of the continuous-variable quantum key distribution doubles the previous distance record and shows the road for long-distance and large-scale secure quantum key distribution using room-temperature standard telecom components.

RESUMEN

The forced convection (air supply jet) and the natural convection (thermal plume of passenger) co-exist in an aircraft cabin simultaneously. Due to the notable difference of the Reynolds numbers for the two convection processes, the traditional RANS method can hardly simulate the forced/natural convection flows accurately at the same time. In addition, the large geometric ratio between the main air supply inlet and the whole cabin leads to difficulties in grid generation for the cabin space. An efficient computational model based on the standard k-e model is established to solve these problems. The coefficients in the dissipative equation are modified to compensate the enlarged numerical dissipation caused by coarse grid; meanwhile, the piecewise-defined turbulent viscosity is introduced to combine the forced and natural convection. The modified model is validated by available experimental results in a Boeing 737-200 mock-up. Furthermore, the unsteady characteristic of the aircraft cabin environment is obtained and analyzed. According to the frequency analysis, it turns out that the thermal plume is the main factor of the unsteady fluctuation in cabin. RESUMEN

Previous studies have provided evidence that automatic emotion regulation (AER), which is primed by control goals, can change emotion trajectory unconsciously. However, the cognitive mechanism and associated changes in depression remain unclear. The current study aimed to examine whether subliminal goal priming could change the emotional response inhibition among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and their healthy controls. A group of patients with depression and a healthy control group were both primed subliminally by playing control goal related or neutral words for 20 ms each; afterward, they judged the gender of happy or angry faces in an emotional Go/No-Go task. A group of depressed patients and a healthy control group both were both primed subliminally with control goal-related words (20 ms) or neutral words (20 ms), and they judged the gender of happy or angry faces in an emotional Go/No-Go task. Among patients with depression, there were fewer false alarms of the No-Go response to emotional stimulus after priming with control goal rather than neutral words. Meanwhile, patients with MDD in the subliminal regulation goal priming condition reacted faster to happy rather than angry faces; no significant difference was found in the subliminal neutral priming condition. These findings suggest the malleability of inhibitory control in depression using subliminal priming goals.

RESUMEN

By producing high power per unit area and obtaining immediate feedback, lasers offer the potential for high-precision surface processing. However, due to having many complex and nonlinear physiochemical processes, unfitted values of parameters can easily result in undesired cleaning results: the substrate is either damaged or not cleaned. Thus, an accurate, flexible, and automatic image preview method is highly demanded in the cleaning practice. Here, we propose a multi-scale conditional generative adversarial network (MS-CGAN) that allows workers to view what a cleaned version of the surface would look like before actually cleaning, so that it can assist workers in adjusting laser parameters in advance to obtain desired cleaning results for resource saving and efficiency improvement. The advantage of this method is that it requires zero knowledge of the mechanism of a laser, and hence avoids the need for modeling the complex photon-atom interactions that occur in laser cleaning. Extensive experiments show that MS-CGAN can not only visualize the high-fidelity prediction of the laser cleaning effect, but also produce preview images that exactly match the cleaned surfaces. The method provides an option for industry benefits, such as minimizing the risk of wasting resources, sustaining the environment, and cutting the cost of labor.

RESUMEN

Fluorescence sensing of amine in aqueous solution is challenging. The various basicity and chemical structures of amines may lead to poor selectivity in aqueous solution, and selective fluorescence detection of primary aromatic amine is rarely reported. This paper presents design and synthesis of a fluorescent conjugated polymer for rapid and selective sensing of aromatic amines in aqueous solution. The fluorescent conjugated polymer, poly[fluorenyl-alt-p-phenyleneethynylene] with pendant carboxylic acid groups and long alky chains, is synthesized via palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction. The fluorescence of the polymer is selectively quenched by the aromatic amines in aqueous solution, whereas the aliphatic amines enhance the fluorescence of the polymer. The high selectivity to the aromatic amines, particularly to the environmentally important p-phenylenediamine, likely originates from the amplified π-π fluorescence quenching synergized by amine and carboxylic acid interaction. Our results demonstrate an effective material design strategy that may be extended to fluorescence sensing of other aromatic compounds.
