RESUMEN

This study presents a comprehensive examination of sex-related differences in resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) data, leveraging two different types of machine learning models to predict an individual's sex. We utilized data from the Two Decades-Brainclinics Research Archive for Insights in Neurophysiology (TDBRAIN) EEG study, affirming that gender prediction can be attained with noteworthy accuracy. The best performing model achieved an accuracy of 85% and an ROC AUC of 89%, surpassing all prior benchmarks set using EEG data and rivaling the top-tier results derived from fMRI studies. A comparative analysis of LightGBM and Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) models revealed DCNN's superior performance, attributed to its ability to learn complex spatial-temporal patterns in the EEG data and handle large volumes of data effectively. Despite this, interpretability remained a challenge for the DCNN model. The LightGBM interpretability analysis revealed that the most important EEG features for accurate sex prediction were related to left fronto-central and parietal EEG connectivity. We also showed the role of both low (delta and theta) and high (beta and gamma) activity in the accurate sex prediction. These results, however, have to be approached with caution, because it was obtained from a dataset comprised largely of participants with various mental health conditions, which limits the generalizability of the results and necessitates further validation in future studies. . Overall, the study illuminates the potential of interpretable machine learning for sex prediction, alongside highlighting the importance of considering individual differences in prediction sex from brain activity.

In this work, we studied lead(II) and cobalt(II) complexation of derivatives [2-B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3]2- and [2-B10H9O(CH2)5N3]2- of the closo-decaborate anion containing pendant azido groups in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridyl. Mononuclear [PbL2{An}] and binuclear [Pb2L4(NO3)2{An}] lead complexes (where {An} is the N3-substituted boron cluster) were isolated and studied by IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The mononuclear lead(II) complex [Pb(phen)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3] and the binuclear lead(II) complex [Pb2(phen)4(NO3)2[B10H9O(CH2)5)N3] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complex [Pb2(phen)4(NO3)2[B10H9O(CH2)5)N3], the boron cluster is coordinated by the metal atom only via the 3c2e MHB bonds. In complex [Pb(phen)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3], the coordination environment of the metal includes BH groups of the boron cluster and the oxygen atom of the exo-polyhedral substituent. When the reaction was performed in a CH3CN/water mixture, the binuclear lead(II) complex [(Pb(bipy)NO3)(Pb(bipy)2NO3)(B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3)]·CH3CN·H2O was isolated, where the boron cluster acts as a bridging ligand between lead atoms coordinated by the boron cage via the O atoms of the substituent and/or the BH groups. In the course of cobalt(II) complexation, the starting compound (Ph4P)2[B10H9O(CH2)5N3] was isolated and its structure was also determined by X-ray diffraction. Although a number of lead(II) complexes with coordinated N3 are known from the literature, no complexes with the boron cluster coordinated by the pendant N3 group involved in the metal coordination have been isolated.

In magnetoencephalography, linear minimum norm inverse methods are commonly employed when a solution with minimal a priori assumptions is desirable. These methods typically produce spatially extended inverse solutions, even when the generating source is focal. Various reasons have been proposed for this effect, including intrisic properties of the minimum norm solution, effects of regularization, noise, and limitations of the sensor array. In this work, we express the lead field in terms of the magnetostatic multipole expansion and develop the minimum-norm inverse in the multipole domain. We demonstrate the close relationship between numerical regularization and explicit suppression of spatial frequencies of the magnetic field. We show that the spatial sampling capabilities of the sensor array and regularization together determine the resolution of the inverse solution. For the purposes of stabilizing the inverse estimate, we propose the multipole transformation of the lead field as an alternative or complementary means to purely numerical regularization.

Objective.Our objective is to formulate the problem of the magnetoencephalographic (MEG) sensor array design as a well-posed engineering problem of accurately measuring the neuronal magnetic fields. This is in contrast to the traditional approach that formulates the sensor array design problem in terms of neurobiological interpretability the sensor array measurements.Approach.We use the vector spherical harmonics (VSH) formalism to define a figure-of-merit for an MEG sensor array. We start with an observation that, under certain reasonable assumptions, any array ofmperfectly noiseless sensors will attain exactly the same performance, regardless of the sensors' locations and orientations (with the exception of a negligible set of singularly bad sensor configurations). We proceed to the conclusion that under the aforementioned assumptions, the only difference between different array configurations is the effect of (sensor) noise on their performance. We then propose a figure-of-merit that quantifies, with a single number, how much the sensor array in question amplifies the sensor noise.Main results.We derive a formula for intuitively meaningful, yet mathematically rigorous figure-of-merit that summarizes how desirable a particular sensor array design is. We demonstrate that this figure-of-merit is well-behaved enough to be used as a cost function for a general-purpose nonlinear optimization methods such as simulated annealing. We also show that sensor array configurations obtained by such optimizations exhibit properties that are typically expected of 'high-quality' MEG sensor arrays, e.g. high channel information capacity.Significance.Our work paves the way toward designing better MEG sensor arrays by isolating the engineering problem of measuring the neuromagnetic fields out of the bigger problem of studying brain function through neuromagnetic measurements.

A comprehensive study focused on the preparation of disubstituted carboxonium derivatives of closo-decaborate anion [2,6-B10H8O2CC6H5]- was carried out. The proposed synthesis of the target product was based on the interaction between the anion [B10H11]- and benzoic acid C6H5COOH. It was shown that the formation of this product proceeds stepwise through the formation of a mono-substituted product [B10H9OC(OH)C6H5]-. In addition, an alternative one-step approach for obtaining the target derivative is postulated. The structure of tetrabutylammonium salts of carboxonium derivative ((C4H9)4N)[2,6-B10H8O2CC6H5] was established with the help of X-ray structure analysis. The reaction pathway for the formation of [2,6-B10H8O2CC6H5]- was investigated with the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This process has an electrophile induced nucleophilic substitution (EINS) mechanism, and intermediate anionic species play a key role. Such intermediates have a structure in which one boron atom coordinates two hydrogen atoms. The regioselectivity for the process of formation for the 2,6-isomer was also proved by theoretical calculations. Generally, in the experimental part, the simple and available approach for producing disubstituted carboxonium derivative was introduced, and the mechanism of this process was investigated with the help of theoretical calculations. The proposed approach can be applicable for the preparation of a wide range of disubstituted derivatives of closo-borate anions.

A new series of compounds based on perbrominated disubstituted sulfonium derivatives of the closo-decaborate anion (n-Bu4N)[2-B10Br9SR2] (R = n-Pr, i-Pr, n-Bu, n-C8H17, n-C12H25, n-C18H37) was obtained, characterised by modern physicochemical methods of analysis. According to the results of an X-ray diffraction study, some of the anions and solvate molecules were disordered. The cations (n-Bu4N)+ and anions [2-B10Br9SR2]- were associated via C-H…Br and H…H contacts. In addition, Br…Br interactions between anions were revealed. The role of these contacts was analysed in terms of Hirshfeld surface analysis, QTAIM theory and the NCI method using quantum chemical calculations. An increase in the size of the alkyl R moiety led to significant strengthening of the total energy of H…H interactions. In the case of R = -n-C18H37, a parallel mutual orientation of alkyl moieties was established that was similar to the packing of salts of fatty acids. The nature of C-H…Br and Br…Br interionic interactions was found to be attractive, in contrast to the repulsive nature of intermolecular Br…Br interactions.

RESUMEN

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) has been recognized as a very promising approach for cancer treatment. In the case of osteosarcoma, boron-containing scaffolds can be a powerful tool to combine boron delivery to the tumor cells and the repair of postoperative bone defects. Here we describe the fabrication and characterization of novel biodegradable polymer composites as films and 3D-printed matrices based on aliphatic polyesters containing closo-borates (CB) for BNCT. Different approaches to the fabrication of composites have been applied, and the mechanical properties of these composites, kinetics of their degradation, and the release of closo-borate have been studied. The most complex scaffold was a 3D-printed poly(ε-caprolactone) matrix filled with CB-containing alginate/gelatin hydrogel to enhance biocompatibility. The results obtained allowed us to confirm the high potential of the developed composite materials for application in BNCT and bone tissue regeneration.

The process of protonation of [2,6-B10H8O2CCH3]- was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The most suitable conditions for protonation of the derivative [2,6-B10H8O2CCH3]- were found. The process of protonation was carried out in the presence of an excess of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid CF3SO3H at room temperature in dichloromethane solution. The structure of the resulting complex [2,6-B10H8O2CCH3*Hfac]0 was established using NMR data and the results of DFT calculations. An additional proton atom Hfac was found to be localized on one of the facets that was opposite the boron atom in a substituted position, and which bonded mainly with one apical boron atom. The main descriptors of the B-Hfac bond were established theoretically using QTAIM and NBO approaches. In addition, the mechanism of [2,6-B10H8O2CCH3]- protonation was investigated.

As a result of our study on the interaction between the octahydrotriborate anion with nucleophiles (Nu = THF, Ph3P, Ph2P-(CH2)2-PPh2 (dppe), Ph3As, Et3N, PhNH2, C5H5N, CH3CN, Ph2CHCN)) in the presence of a wide range of Lewis acids (Ti(IV), Hf(IV), Zr(IV), Al, Cu(I), Zn, Mn(II), Co(II) halides and iodine), a number of substituted derivatives of the octahydrotriborate anion [B3H7Nu] are obtained. It is found that the use of TiCl4, AlCl3, ZrCl4, HfCl4, CuCl and iodine leads to the highest product yields. In this case, it is most likely that the reaction proceeds through the formation of an intermediate [B3H7-HMXnx], which was detected by NMR spectroscopy. The structures of [Ph3P·B3H7] and [PhNH2·B3H7] were determined by X-ray diffraction.

In the present work, a convenient and straightforward approach to the preparation of borylated amidines based on the closo-dodecaborate anion [B12H11NCCH3NHR]-, R=H, Alk, Ar was developed. This method has two stages. A nitrile derivative of the general form [B12H11NCCH3]- was obtained, using a modified technique, in the first stage. On the second stage the resulting molecular system interacted with primary amines to form the target amidine products. This approach is characterised by a simple chemical apparatus, mild conditions and high yields of the final products. The mechanism of the addition of amine to the nitrile derivative of the closo-dodecaborate anion was studied, using quantum-chemical methods. The interaction between NH3 and [B12H11NCCH3]- ammonia was chosen as an example. It was found that the structure of the transition state determines the stereo-selectivity of the process. A study of the biological properties of borylated amidine sodium salts indicated that the substances had low toxicity and could accumulate in cancer cells in significant amounts.

The interaction of hafnium(IV) salts (oxide-dichloride, chloride, and bromide) with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), diethylenetriamminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), 1,2-diaminocyclohexanetetraacetic acid (CDTA), 1,3-dipropylmino-2-hydroxy N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (dpta), and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine triacetic acid (HEDTA) has been studied. The corresponding complexes Na2[Hf(NTA)2]·3H2O (1), Na[HfDTPA]·3H2O (2), [HfCDTA(H2O)2] (3), and Na[Hf2(dpta)2]·7.5H2O·0.5C2H5OH (4) have been isolated and characterized and their structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Biological studies of [HfCDTA(H2O)2] have shown that in 5% glucose solution this complex has low toxicity and good contrasting ability.

This work is devoted to the search for new antiherpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) drugs among synthetic tetrapyrroles and to an investigation of their antiviral properties under nonphotodynamic conditions. In this study, novel amphiphilic 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-(3-pyridyl-n-propanoyl)oxyphenyl)porphyrin tetrabromide (3a), 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-(6-pyridyl-n-hexanoyl)oxyphenyl)porphyrin tetrabromide (3b) and known 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridinio)porphyrin tetraiodide (TMePyP) were synthesized, and their dark antiviral activity in vitro against HSV-1 was studied. The influence of porphyrin's nanosized delivery vehicles based on Pluronic F127 on anti-HSV-1 activity was estimated. All the received compounds 3a, 3b and TMePyP showed virucidal efficiency and had an effect on viral replication stages. The new compound 3b showed the highest antiviral activity, close to 100%, with the lowest concentration, while the maximum TMePyP activity was observed with a high concentration; porphyrin 3a was the least active. The inclusion of the synthesized compounds in Pluronic F-127 polymeric micelles had a noticeable effect on antiviral activity only at higher porphyrin concentrations. Action of the received compounds differs by influence on the early or later reproduction stages. While 3a and TMePyP acted on all stages of the viral replication cycle, porphyrin 3b inhibited viral replication during the early stages of infection. The resulting compounds are promising for the development of utilitarian antiviral agents and, possibly, medical antiviral drugs.

The novel members of the 1,2-diboraoxazoles family have been obtained. In the present work, we have carried out the intramolecular ring-closure reaction of borylated iminols of general type [B10H9N=C(OH)R]- (R = Me, Et, nPr, iPr, tBu, Ph, 4-Cl-Ph). This process is conducted in mild conditions with 83-87% yields. The solid-state structures of two salts of 1,2-diboraoxazoles were additionally investigated by X-ray crystallography. In addition, the phenomena of bonding interactions in the 1,2-diboraoxazole cycles have been theoretically studied by the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules analysis. Several local and integral topological properties of the electron density involved in these interactions have been computed.

Importance: Social and economic costs of depression are exacerbated by prolonged periods spent identifying treatments that would be effective for a particular patient. Thus, a tool that reliably predicts an individual patient's response to treatment could significantly reduce the burden of depression. Objective: To estimate how accurately an outcome of escitalopram treatment can be predicted from electroencephalographic (EEG) data on patients with depression. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prognostic study used a support vector machine classifier to predict treatment outcome using data from the first Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression (CAN-BIND-1) study. The CAN-BIND-1 study comprised 180 patients (aged 18-60 years) diagnosed with major depressive disorder who had completed 8 weeks of treatment. Of this group, 122 patients had EEG data recorded before the treatment; 115 also had EEG data recorded after the first 2 weeks of treatment. Interventions: All participants completed 8 weeks of open-label escitalopram (10-20 mg) treatment. Main Outcomes and Measures: The ability of EEG data to predict treatment outcome, measured as accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity of the classifier at baseline and after the first 2 weeks of treatment. The treatment outcome was defined in terms of change in symptom severity, measured by the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, before and after 8 weeks of treatment. A patient was designated as a responder if the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale score decreased by at least 50% during the 8 weeks and as a nonresponder if the score decrease was less than 50%. Results: Of the 122 participants who completed a baseline EEG recording (mean [SD] age, 36.3 [12.7] years; 76 [62.3%] female), the classifier was able to identify responders with an estimated accuracy of 79.2% (sensitivity, 67.3%; specificity, 91.0%) when using only the baseline EEG data. For a subset of 115 participants who had additional EEG data recorded after the first 2 weeks of treatment, use of these data increased the accuracy to 82.4% (sensitivity, 79.2%; specificity, 85.5%). Conclusions and Relevance: These findings demonstrate the potential utility of EEG as a treatment planning tool for escitalopram therapy. Further development of the classification tools presented in this study holds the promise of expediting the search for optimal treatment for each patient.

RESUMEN

The primary goal of the Helsinki VideoMEG Project is to enable magnetoencephalography (MEG) practitioners to record and analyze the video of the subject during an MEG experiment jointly with the MEG data. The project provides: •Hardware assembly instructions and software for setting up video and audio recordings of the participant synchronized to MEG data acquisition.•Basic software tools for analyzing video and audio together with the MEG data. The resulting setup allows reliable recording of video and audio from the subject in various real-world usage scenarios. The Helsinki VideoMEG Project allowed successful establishment of video-MEG facilities in four different MEG laboratories in Finland, Sweden and the United States.

HYPERSCANNING: Most neuroimaging studies of human social cognition have focused on brain activity of single subjects. More recently, "two-person neuroimaging" has been introduced, with simultaneous recordings of brain signals from two subjects involved in social interaction. These simultaneous "hyperscanning" recordings have already been carried out with a spectrum of neuroimaging modalities, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). DUAL MEG SETUP: We have recently developed a setup for simultaneous magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings of two subjects that communicate in real time over an audio link between two geographically separated MEG laboratories. Here we present an extended version of the setup, where we have added a video connection and replaced the telephone-landline-based link with an Internet connection. Our setup enabled transmission of video and audio streams between the sites with a one-way communication latency of about 130 ms. Our software that allows reproducing the setup is publicly available. VALIDATION: We demonstrate that the audiovisual Internet-based link can mediate real-time interaction between two subjects who try to mirror each others' hand movements that they can see via the video link. All the nine pairs were able to synchronize their behavior. In addition to the video, we captured the subjects' movements with accelerometers attached to their index fingers; we determined from these signals that the average synchronization accuracy was 215 ms. In one subject pair we demonstrate inter-subject coherence patterns of the MEG signals that peak over the sensorimotor areas contralateral to the hand used in the task.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures magnetic fields generated by neuronal currents. MEG is complementary to EEG. Considerable body of evidence indicates that ictal MEG recordings can provide useful information for pre-surgical evaluation of epilepsy patients alongside the more established long-term ictal video-EEG. Ictal MEG is recorded in some epilepsy surgery centers. However, a wider adoption of ictal MEG is hampered by lack of tools for synchronized video-MEG recording similar to those of video-EEG. METHODS: We have augmented MEG with a synchronized behavioral video-recording system. To estimate its additional value in ictal recordings, we retrospectively analyzed recordings of 10 epilepsy patients with and without the video. RESULTS: In six patients out of ten, adding the video substantially changed the resulting interpretations. In all six cases the effect was considerable: the number of detected seizures changed by more than 50%. CONCLUSIONS: Synchronized video and audio recording capabilities are important for effective ictal MEG recordings of epilepsy patients.

Ultra-low-field MRI uses microtesla fields for signal encoding and sensitive superconducting quantum interference devices for signal detection. Similarly, modern magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems use arrays comprising hundreds of superconducting quantum interference device channels to measure the magnetic field generated by neuronal activity. In this article, hybrid MEG-MRI instrumentation based on a commercial whole-head MEG device is described. The combination of ultra-low-field MRI and MEG in a single device is expected to significantly reduce coregistration errors between the two modalities, to simplify MEG analysis, and to improve MEG localization accuracy. The sensor solutions, MRI coils (including a superconducting polarizing coil), an optimized pulse sequence, and a reconstruction method suitable for hybrid MEG-MRI measurements are described. The performance of the device is demonstrated by presenting ultra-low-field-MR images and MEG recordings that are compared with data obtained with a 3T scanner and a commercial MEG device.

In ultra-low-field magnetic resonance imaging, arrays of up to hundreds of highly sensitive superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) can be used to detect the weak magnetic fields emitted by the precessing magnetization. Here, we investigate the noise amplification in sensitivity-encoded ultra-low-field MRI at various acceleration rates using a SQUID array consisting of 102 magnetometers, 102 gradiometers, or 306 magnetometers and gradiometers, to cover the whole head. Our results suggest that SQUID arrays consisting of 102 magnetometers and 102 gradiometers are similar in g-factor distribution. A SQUID array of 306 sensors (102 magnetometers and 204 gradiometers) only marginally improves the g-factor. Corroborating with previous studies, the g-factor in 2D sensitivity-encoded ultra-low-field MRI with 9 to 16-fold 2D accelerations using the SQUID array studied here may be acceptable.
