RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of Guanxin Danshen Dripping Pill (GXDSDP) in treating anxiety and depression in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: A total of 1,428 patients diagnosed with CHD screened for anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QOL) at baseline received 0.4 g of GXDSDP treatment 3 times per day and returned for monthly reassessment. Patients were recruited after stable treatment for CHD and received assessment of General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ) for evaluating anxiety, depression, and QOL. Patients were followed up 3 times, once every 4 weeks, during outpatient visits for 12 weeks. RESULTS: At the third follow-up (F3), the anxiety symptom of 63.79% (673/1,055) of the patients improved to sub-clinical level, and the GAD-7 score improved significantly (8.11 vs. 3.87, P<0.01); 57.52% (585/1,017) patients' depressive symptoms improved to sub-clinical level, with a significant improvement in PHQ-9 score (8.69 vs. 4.41, P<0.01) at F3. All aspects of QOL significantly improved at the end of treatment compared to those at baseline (all P<0.01) as assessed by SAQ: physical limitation (31.17 vs. 34.14), anginal stability (2.74 vs. 4.14), anginal frequency (8.16 vs. 9.10), treatment satisfaction (13.43 vs. 16.29), and disease perception (8.69 vs. 11.02). CONCLUSIONS: A fixed dosage of GXDSDP may be a potential treatment option for CHD patients comorbid with anxiety or depression. (Registration No. ChiCTR2100051523).

RESUMEN

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between kinesin-like family 6 (KIF6) polymorphisms and hypertension in a northeast Chinese cohort. In this study, two single nucleotide polymorphisms of KIF6 (rs20456 and rs6930913) and their haplotype were analyzed in 382 hypertension patients and 378 controls with SHEsis analysis platform, and the gene-environmental interactions were evaluated with logistic regression analysis. After adjusting for confounding factors, significantly lower risk of hypertension was observed in participants with genotype TC (0.416 (CI 0.299-0.578), p < 0.001) and CC (0.577 (0.389-0.857), p=0.007) of rs20456 compared with TT. For rs6930913, allele T (0.522 (0.386-0.704), p < 0.001), genotype TT (0.325 (0.205-0.515), p < 0.001), and genotype CT (0.513 (0.379-0.693), p < 0.001) were significantly associated with lower risk of hypertension than allele C and CC genotype, respectively. Gene-environment analyses confirmed the significant influence on hypertension by the interactions between genotypes distribution in rs20456 (CT: p=0.036, TT: p=0.022) and smoking status. No interactions were found between smoking and rs6930913, except those with dominant or recessive genetic models (both P s =0.006). There were no interactions between KIF6 and overweight (all P s > 0.05). Haplotype analyses showed that CC (p=0.005) and TC (p=0.001) of rs20456 and rs6930913 were significantly associated with a statistically increased risk of hypertension. The false-positive report probability (FPRP) analysis was used to verify significant findings. In conclusions, KIF6 might affect the susceptibility of hypertension. The allele C (rs20456) and allele T (rs690913) were inclined to protect individuals from hypertension both in genotype and haplotype analyses.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Ultrafast ultrasound imaging has been demonstrated to be an effective method to evaluate carotid stiffness through carotid pulse-wave velocity (PWV) with high reproducibility, but a lack of reference values has precluded its widespread use in clinical practice. The aims of this study were to establish reference values of PWV for ultrafast ultrasound imaging in a prospective, multicenter, population-based cohort study and to investigate the main determinants of carotid PWV. METHODS: A total of 1,544 healthy Han Chinese volunteers (581 men [38%]; age range, 18-95 years) were enrolled from 32 collaborating laboratories in China. The participants were categorized by age, blood pressure (BP), and body mass index (BMI). Basic clinical parameters and carotid PWV at the beginning of systole (BS) and at end-systole (ES) were measured using ultrafast ultrasound imaging techniques. RESULTS: PWV at both BS and ES was significantly higher in the left carotid artery than in the right carotid artery. PWV at BS was significantly higher in men than in women; however, no significant difference was noted in PWV at ES between men and women. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that age, BP, and BMI were independently correlated with PWV at both BS and ES. PWV at BS and ES progressively increased with increases in age, BP, and BMI. Furthermore, age- and sex-specific reference values of carotid PWV for ultrafast ultrasound imaging were established. CONCLUSIONS: Reference values of carotid PWV for ultrafast ultrasound imaging, stratified by sex and age, were determined for the first time. Age, BP, and BMI were the dominant determinants of carotid PWV for ultrafast ultrasound imaging, which should be considered in clinical practice for assessing arterial stiffness.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to research the understanding and knowledge of cervical cancer, human papilloma virus (HPV), and HPV vaccination, and the acceptance of HPV vaccination, among a population of women in northeastern China. A cross-sectional survey was carried out by questionnaire to investigate knowledge of cervical cancer, HPV, and HPV vaccination. The 230 female participants were native residents of northeastern China, and their ages ranged between 18 and 65 years. Questionnaires were randomly acquired by the respondents from online and paper questionnaire distribution. The questionnaire included questions on three major aspects to record people's perceptions of cervical cancer, HPV, and vaccines. Of the sample of 230 women surveyed, 80.9% had heard of cervical cancer, but understanding was only 15.7%; 38.3% knew about HPV; 20% knew about HPV vaccine; 39.6% agreed to receive HPV vaccination, and the remainder were mainly concerned about its safety and effectiveness. Data analysis showed that age, family income, and whether there was experience of screening all influenced knowledge of cervical cancer, but this was not statistically significant. The level of education had no obvious effect on the degree of knowledge about cervical cancer; however, with an improvement in education, women's awareness of HPV vaccine improved significantly (p < 0.05). Women who have received cervical cancer screening had significantly greater knowledge about cervical cancer and HPV than those with no screening (p < 0.05). Women in northeastern China have little knowledge of cervical cancer, HPV, and HPV vaccine, lack disease knowledge, and hold a skeptical attitude about HPV vaccination. Medical institutions are the main channel providing information to these women.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to validate MMP1 role in the development of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by bioinformatics methods. METHODS: Gene expression data of 10 GSE series (5 HNSCCs and 5 cSCCs) were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). RESULTS: Higher expression of MMP1 was found rank number one in 9/10 GSE series of SCC. MMP1 was mainly focused on Gene Ontology (GO) terms of collagen catabolic process, extracellular matrix disassembly. The analysis results of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways mainly involved Rheumatoid arthritis, Bladder cancer and Pathways in cancer. Also, MMP1 was identified as a hub protein in the PPI network by using Cytoscape software. In addition, others MMPs members of family were analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that MMP1 may be pivotal to the transition from normal skin to premalignant lesions to SCC, thus representing a potential therapeutic target gene of diagnosis and prevention in SCC.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to identify the potential autophagy-related genes and to explore the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck (cSCCHN) by bioinformatics analysis. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) series GSE86544 was downloaded from the GEO database. The primary data was generated from cSCCHN with clinical perineural invasion (PNI) and cSCCHN without PNI, and was further analyzed in order to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). The results revealed 239 autophagy-related DEGs. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were performed and intersected to investigate the predicted functions of the key DEGs, including hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1A), mitogen-activated protein kinase 8 (MAPK8), mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and B-cell lymphoma 2 like 1 (BCL2L1). Up and downregulated genes shared one pathway, namely 'pathways in cancer'. Next, the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of the autophagy-related DEGs was constructed using Cytoscape 3.30 software. HIF1A, MAPK8, mTOR and BCL2L1 were key nodes in the PPI network. Additionally, RAB23 gene expression was positively correlated with HIF1A, MAPK8 and ADP ribosylation factor GTPase activating protein 1 (ARFGAP1), but negatively correlated with mTOR and BCL2L1. The present results suggested that the genes HIF1A, MAPK8, mTOR, BCL2L1 and RAB23 may be associated with and serve as potential therapeutic targets in cSCCHN with clinical PNI.

RESUMEN

Corins are membrane-bound protease that regulates blood pressure by activating the natriuretic peptides. These pro-atrial natriuretic peptide convertases are essential for sodium homeostasis and normal blood pressure. CORIN variants have been identified in humans and other animals, but no studies of CORIN polymorphisms have been conducted in northeastern China. This study aims to investigate the association of 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CORIN (rs2271037 and rs3749585) with hypertension, as well as their potential interactions with some risk factors of hypertension in a Han population of northeastern China. A case-control study, including 402 patients with hypertension and 406 participants with normal blood pressure, was conducted in Liaoning province. SNP genotyping was carried out by high resolution melting (HRM) after polymerase chain reaction amplifications. Since rs3749585 is located in 3' untranslated region (UTR) of CORIN, in silico analysis was used to predict target micro RNAs on TargetScan, miRanda, and DIANA-microT. As a result, mutant T allele in rs2271037 (odds ratio [OR], 1.693; 95% confidence [CI], 1.528-1.877; p < 0.001) and C allele in rs3749585 (OR, 1.114; 95% CI 1.011-1.227; p = 0.029) increased the risk of hypertension, comparing with wild G allele and T allele, respectively. Patients with genotype TT (OR, 10.209; 95% CI, 6.414-16.250; p < 0.001) and GT (OR, 1.730; 95% CI, 1.226-2.443; p = 0.002) have higher risk of hypertension than those with genotype GG. SNP rs2271037 was significantly associated with susceptibility to hypertension in all genetic models (dominant model: OR, 2.879; 95% CI, 2.080-3.986; p < 0.001; recessive model: OR, 7.159; 95% CI, 4.779-10.724; p < 0.001; additive model: OR, 1.535; 95% CI, 1.163-2.027; p = 0.002). SNP rs3749585 was significantly correlated with hypertension susceptibility only in dominant model (OR, 1.533; 95% CI, 1.073-2.189; p = 0.019), but not in recessive model (OR, 1.220; 95% CI, 0.906-1.644; p = 0.191) or additive model (OR, 0.915; 95% CI, 0.694-1.205; p = 0.527). After adjusting for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), smoking, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and serum sodium level in logistic models, the same statistical results were obtained. Interaction study showed the association between CORIN polymorphisms and hypertension could be changed by overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2). In silico analyses implicated hsa-miR-495 as a target miRNA that potentially interacts with the 3' UTR of CORIN. In conclusion, polymorphisms of rs2271037 and rs3749585 in CORIN were significantly associated with hypertension in a Han population of northeastern China. The mutant-type T allele of rs2271037 and C allele of rs3749585 might increase the susceptibility to hypertension in this population.

RESUMEN

Rab23 has been proven to play a role in membrane trafficking and protein transport in eukaryotic cells. Rab23 is also a negative regulator of the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling pathway in an indirect way. The nonsense mutation and loss of protein of Rab23 has been associated with neural tube defect in mice and aberrant expression in various diseases in human such as neural system, breast, visceral, and cutaneous tumor. In addition, Rab23 may play joint roles in autophagosome formation during anti-infection process against Group A streptococcus. In this review, we give a brief review on the functions of Rab23, summarize the involvement of Rab23 in genetic research, membrane trafficking, and potential autophagy pathway, especially focus on tumor promotion, disease pathogenesis, and discuss the possible underlying mechanisms that are regulated by Rab23.

RESUMEN

Abstract Acute localized exanthematous pustulosis is a localized variant of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, which is characterized by the eruption of multiple scattered pustules following drug administration. A 72-year-old woman presented with multiple erythematous pustules on her face, which had appeared two days after using cefoperazone and sodium sulbactam. Histopathological findings showed subcorneal pustules and mixed inflammatory cell infiltration in the dermis. The pustules resolved within about two weeks after the patient discontinued the antibiotics. This report discusses the case of a woman with a cutaneous drug reaction consistent with acute localized exanthematous pustulosis that occurred after cefoperazone and sodium sulbactam were administered.

RESUMEN

Abstract Onychogryphosis is an acquired nail plate change. It often affects the toenail and is characterized by an opaque, yellow-brownish nail plate that is distorted, grossly thickened, elongated, and partly curved resembling a ram's horn. Tuberous sclerosis complex is a multisystem disorder associated with high rates of mental retardation, autism, cognitive impairment, behavioral problems, or seizures. Nail disease can also be associated, which is a concern to patients due to pain and nail distortion. We reported a typical tuberous sclerosis complex patient with distinctive clinical features of a ram's horn nails, which presented a great challenge to surgical treatment and nail restoration.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The accurate measurement of the femoral anteversion (FA) angle is always a topic of much debate in the orthopedic surgery and radiology research. We aimed to explore a new FA measurement method to acquire accurate results without radiation damage using piglet model. METHODS: A total of thirty piglets were assigned to two groups based on the age. Bilateral femora were imaged with 3.0-T magnetic resonance (MR) and 64-slice computed tomography (CT) examinations on all piglets. FA was measured on MR-three-dimensional (3D) postprocessing software with a four-step method: initial validation of the femoral condylar axis, validation of the condylar plane, validation of the femoral neck axis, and line-plane angle measurement of FA. After MR and CT examinations, all piglets were sacrificed and their degree of FA was measured using their excised, dried femora. MR, CT, and dried-femur measurement results were analyzed statistically; MR and CT measurements were compared for accuracy against each other and against the gold standard dried femur measurement. RESULTS: In both groups, the mean FA value measured by MR was lower than that measured by CT. A statistically significant difference was observed between CT- and dried-femur measurements but not between MR- and dried-femur measurements. A higher correlation (0.783 vs. 0.408) and a higher consistency (0.863 vs. 0.578) with dried-femur measurement results were seen for MR measurements than CT measurements in the 1-week age group. However, in the 8-week age group, similar correlations (0.707 vs. 0.669) and consistencies (0.864 vs. 0.821) were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Noninvasive MR-3D-Cube reconstruction was able to accurately measure FA in piglets. Particularly in the 1-week age group with a larger proportion of cartilaginous structures, the correlation and consistency between MR- and dried-femur measurement results were higher than those between CT- and dried-femur measurements, suggesting that MR may be a new useful examination tool for FA-related diseases in children.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to review the ultrasonographic features of secondary intussusception (SI) in children and assess the value of ultrasound in the diagnosis of pediatric SI. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective analysis on the ultrasound findings of 1977 cases of primary intussusception (PI) and 37 cases of SI in children. The SI cases were diagnosed by ultrasonography and confirmed by laparotomy or histopathologic diagnosis. The clinical and ultrasonographic features were analyzed and compared between these two groups. RESULTS: The age, no flatus or defecation, position, diameter and length of intussusception, the presence of free intraperitoneal liquid, and intestinal dialation at the proximal end present, all contributed to the differentiation between PI and SI (all P < 0.05). Ultrasound was able to demonstrate the pathological lead point (PLP) shadows in all of the 37 SI cases, either in the cervical part or intussusceptum of the intussusception. Among the 37 SI patients, 21 cases (56.8 %) were accurately categorized with lesions, including intestinal polyps, cystic intestinal duplication, intestinal wall lymphoma, and a small part of Meckel's diverticulum. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound can be used as a feasible and effective method to discriminate PI from SI. Once the PLP is detected, a definite diagnosis can be made. KEY POINTS: • The clinical and ultrasonographic features were compared between SI and PI. • The age, location, diameter and length of intussusception, and intestinal dilation were distinguishing features. • The causes of SI were found to be polyps, intestinal duplication, lymphoma, and Meckel's diverticulum. • Ultrasound can be used as an important method to diagnose SI. • Demonstration and confirmation of PLP are vital to diagnosing SI.

RESUMEN

Observational studies have reported inconsistent results on the association between fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of pancreatic cancer. We carried out a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies to summarize available evidence. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases for relevant studies published until the end of January 2015. Fixed-effects and random-effects models were used to estimate the summary relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of pancreatic cancer. A total of 15 case-control studies, eight prospective studies, and one pooled analysis fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The summary RR for the highest versus the lowest intake was 0.73 (95% CI=0.53-1.00) for fruit and vegetables, 0.73 (95% CI=0.63-0.84) for fruit, and 0.76 (95% CI=0.69-0.83) for vegetables, with significant heterogeneities (I=70.5, 55.7, and 43.0%, respectively). Inverse associations were observed in the stratified analysis by study design, although the results of prospective studies showed borderline significance, with corresponding RR=0.90 (95% CI=0.77-1.05) for fruit and vegetable intake, 0.93 (95% CI=0.83-1.03) for fruit intake, and 0.89 (95% CI=0.80-1.00) for vegetable intake. Besides, significant inverse associations were observed in the majority of other subgroup analyses by study quality, geographic location, exposure assessment method, and adjustment for potential confounders. Findings from the present meta-analysis support that fruit and vegetable intake is associated inversely with the risk of pancreatic cancer. However, study design may play a key role in the observed magnitude of the aforementioned association. Future well-designed prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To investigate the expression and clinical significance of zinc finger protein 217 (ZNF217) in human colorectal carcinoma (CRC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expression of ZNF217 in 60 CRC tissues and matched tumor adjacent tissues, collected between January 2013 and June 2014, was assessed immunohistochemically. The relationship between the expression of ZNF217 and clinicopathlogical features was analyzed by Pearson chi-square test. In addition, siRNA was used to down-regulate the expression of ZNF217 in CRC cells. The effects of ZNF217 for cell migration and invasion were measured by wound healing assay and transwell assay, respectively. RESULTS: The expression level of ZNF217 was significantly higher in CRC tissues than in tumor adjacent tissues (p<0.05), positively correlating with tumor size, lymphatic metastasis and advanced TNM stage (p<0.05). Down-regulation of ZNF217 in CRC cells could significantly suppress cell migration and invasion. CONCLUSIONS: ZNF217 is overexpressed in colorectal carcinoma tissues and is associated with tumor malignant clinicopathological features. RESUMEN

Dendritic myxofibrolipoma is a newly described benign soft tissue tumor that could be easily mistaken for sarcoma. It develops primarily in the subcutis or muscular fascia of the head and neck, shoulders, etc. Histologically, the tumor is characterized by an admixture of mature adipose tissue, spindle and stellate cells, and abundant myxoid stroma with prominent collagenization. These neoplasms typically show positive immunoreactivity for CD-34, vimentin and Bcl-2. Herein, we described a rare case presenting with a papule on the nasal tip in a 69-year old patient. Histopathology and immunohistochemical staining confirmed the diagnosis. In short, it brings the attention of clinicians to the importance of proper identification and characterization of this tumor.
