RESUMEN

The co-extrusion process is widely used to produce composite tire treads with better performance. This study investigated the rubber co-extrusion flow process and quality influencing factors of tri-composite tire tread through numerical simulation and experimental methods. Here, RPA 2000 rubber processing analyzer was used to carry out rheological tests on the three rubber materials, the PTT viscoelastic constitutive model was fitted, and the fitting curves were in good agreement with the test data. Then, a three-dimensional viscoelastic numerical simulation model of the tri-composite tread co-extrusion process was established using Ansys Polyflow software. The parameter evolution technique is adopted in the model establishment to improve the calculation convergence. In addition, a global remeshing function is used to avoid excessive mesh deformation. A co-extrusion experiment is conducted to verify the model's accuracy using a tri-screw extruder. The extruded tread size error rate between the experiment and simulation is less than 6%. The variation of the velocity field, pressure field and shear rate field during extrusion is analyzed, and the formation mechanism of die swell is explained simultaneously. Finally, the influence of process parameters (inflow rate and traction speed) and die structure (convergence angle and thickness) on the extruded tire tread shape and quality was investigated, which can provide theoretical guidance for improving tread quality and production efficiency. Furthermore, the numerical simulation method can assist the design of the die plate in enhancing the efficiency of the die plate design.

OBJECTIVE: To compare minimally invasive and traditional Chevron osteotomy in treating patients with mild to moderate hallux valgus. METHODS: Clinical data of 36 patients (36 feet) with mild to moderate hallux valgus from January 2019 to February 2021 were retrospectively analyzed, and divided into minimally invasive osteotomy(minimally invasive group) and traditional Chevron osteotomy(traditional group). There were 16 patients in minimally invasive group, including 1 male and 15 females, aged from 36 to 60 years old with an average of(49.0±9.5) years old;9 were mild and 7 were moderate according to Mann classification;treated with minimally invasive osteotomy with hollow screw fixation. There were 20 patients(20 feet) in traditional group, including 2 males and 18 females, aged from 38 to 65 years old with an average of(50.0±9.2) years old;11 were mild and 9 were moderate according to Mann classification;treated with traditional Chevron osteotomy. Hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA) before and after operation at 12 months bewteen two groups were observed and compared, and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) forefoot score and visual analogue scale (VAS) before and after operation at 6 weeks and 12 months between two groups were compared. RESULTS: Thirty-six patiens were followed up from 14 to 30 months with an average of (21.00±5.77) months. All incisions were healed well at stageⅠwithout infection. There were no significant differences in HVA, IMA, AOFAS forefoot scores and VAS before and after operation at 12 months between two groups(P>0.05). However, AOFAS forefoot scores and VAS of minimally invasive group was significantly better than that of traditionl group at 6 weeks after operation (P<0.05). Postoperative HVA, IMA, AOFAS forefoot scores and VAS at 12 months bewteen two groups were improved better than that of preoperation(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Compared with traditional Chevron osteotomy, minimally invasive osteotomy has less trauma and quicker recovery. Both of them has similar clinical effects, and could receive satisfactory clinical effects, while treatment of minimally invasive osteotomy should pain attention to learning curve.

Reforestation has been commonly adopted to increase the mangrove areas lost due to developments. A diverse phytoplankton community is critical to mangrove ecosystem functions; however, its compositions in planted mangrove habitats have seldom been reported. The present study, based on the temporal and spatial variations of phytoplankton community and water parameters, evaluated their relationships in a 20-year old artificially planted fringing mangrove in South China. Thirty-one phytoplankton taxa were identified from tidal water collected from three sites along a planted mangrove shoreline: within, and at the edge of mangroves, and at bare shoreline without mangroves. In all three sites, Bacillariophyta (diatom) was the most abundant phylum, dominated by Navicula and Nitzschia at 9.82-83.76% and 2.57-33.97%, respectively. The overall diversity ranged between 0.41 and 1.94. The temporal variations of phytoplankton and water parameters were more obvious than site differences. Higher phytoplankton diversity was found in summer, with increased green algae and cyanobacteria abundance accompanied by riverine discharge. There was site-specific dominance in some phyla between June and January, noticeably Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Dinophyta, and Euglenophyta. A potential toxic dinoflagellate Peridinium sp. was identified during fall and winter, serving as a warning to probable harmful bloom events. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed the abundance of major phytoplankton taxa significantly related to water physiochemical parameters, especially nitrate, ammonium, total phosphorous and orthophosphate. The present study suggests that mangrove vegetation may influence water quality and shape phytoplankton composition, but temporal differences were more significant. Compared with the protected natural mangroves in the National Nature Reserve nearby, this planted fringing mangrove habitat not only had lower nutrients, especially total nitrogen in tidal water, but also had different dominant phytoplankton species and lower species richness. The 20-year old artificially planted mangroves may still not serve the same ecological function as the protected natural mangrove forest.

Microplastic pollution is common in marine and coastal ecosystems, especially in mangrove wetlands. However, factors affecting the distribution of microplastics, such as plants, have not been sufficiently studied. We investigated the effect of different plant species on the distribution of sediment microplastics in two Nature Reserves in South China, viz. Futian Mangrove and Mai Po Mangrove. In Futian Mangrove, the abundance of total microplastics among three monospecific mangrove stands dominated by Sonneratia caseolaris, Kandelia obovata, and Sonneratia apetala was similar. The abundance of microplastics in the mudflat was similar to that in the forest interior, except for the fact that more fiber was found in the mudflat than in the interior of Sonneratia apetala. This suggested that the dense pneumatophores at the fringe prevented fibers from entering the mangrove forest. The significant positive dependence (p < 0.05) between the density of Sonneratia pneumatophores and the abundance of fibers highlighted the importance of pneumatophores. The abundance of total microplastics, predominantly in the form of fibers, in sediments at the forest fringe (2835 ± 713 items/kg d.w. and 2070 ± 224 items/kg d.w. in Futian and Mai Po, respectively) was higher than that in the forest interior and mudflat. There was no difference between the two latter locations in both mangroves, which demonstrated the significance of the fringe effect. This paper reports for the first time that the spatial distribution of microplastics in mangrove sediments was affected by plant species, which provides useful information for environmental processes of microplastics in coastal wetlands.

Mangroves, as a blue carbon reservoir, provide an environment for a variety of microorganisms. Mangroves lie in special locations connecting coastal and estuarine areas and experience fluctuating conditions, which are expected to intensify with climate change, creating a need to better understand the relative roles of stochastic and deterministic processes in shaping microbial community assembly. Here, a study of microbial communities inhabiting mangrove sediments across southeastern China, spanning mangroves in six nature reserves, was conducted. We performed high-throughput DNA sequencing of these samples and compared them with data of 1,370 sediment samples collected from the Earth Microbiome Project (EMP) to compare the microbial diversity of mangroves with that of other biomes. Our results showed that prokaryotic alpha diversity in mangroves was significantly higher than that in other biomes and that microbial beta diversity generally clustered according to biome types. The core operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in mangroves were mostly assigned to Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Euryarchaeota The majority of beta nearest-taxon index values were higher than 2, indicating that community assembly in mangroves was better explained through a deterministic process than through a stochastic process. Mean annual precipitation (MAP) and total organic carbon (TOC) were main deterministic factors explaining variation in the microbial community. This study fills a gap in addressing the unique microbial diversity of mangrove ecosystems and their microbial community assembly mechanisms.IMPORTANCE Understanding the underlying mechanisms of microbial community assembly patterns is a vital issue in microbial ecology. Mangroves, as an important and special ecosystem, provide a unique environment for examining the relative importance of stochastic and deterministic processes. We made the first global-scale comparison and found that microbial diversity was significantly different in mangrove sediments compared to that of other biomes. Furthermore, our results suggest that a deterministic process is more important in shaping microbial community assembly in mangroves.

Mangroves are subject to contamination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) due to waste and wastewater disposal, and aquaculture effluent (AE) from nearby aquaculture activities. However, the response of mangrove plants to these two stresses and their interaction has seldom been reported. A six-month microcosm study, planted with either Kandelia obovata (Ko) or Avicennia marina (Am), the two most dominant species in South China mangrove swamps, was conducted to investigate the effects of BDE-99, and the interactions of BDE-99 (one of the most abundant PBDE congeners) and AE on growth and physiological responses of these plants. In addition to mixed stressors, both stressors were also applied individually. Results showed that Avicennia was more tolerant to BDE-99 contamination than Kandelia, as reflected by the reduced biomass, but increased superoxide radical (O2-⁎) release and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in Kandelia. Addition of AE alleviated toxicity of BDE-99 in Kandelia by promoting biomass but lowering oxidative stress and MDA production. The hormesis model also demonstrated that the interaction between BDE-99 and AE on leaf and root MDA and O2-⁎ content in both Kandelia and Avicennia were mostly antagonistic. Activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) in both leaf and root of Kandelia were reduced by BDE-99. On the contrary, BDE-99 significantly enhanced the three enzyme activities in Avicennia root at month 3. Addition of AE also significantly enhanced root CAT, POD and SOD activities, and leaf SOD in both plant species to remove excess ROS produced under BDE-99 exposure. These results indicated that the tolerance of mangrove plants to oxidative stresses depended on antioxidative enzymes that were inducible.

OBJECTIVE: To study and compare the clinical outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation via extensile L-shape incision and limited open reduction via the sinus tarsi approach using the medial distraction technique for intra-articular calcaneal fractures. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 65 intra-articular calcaneal fractures treated operatively between March 2012 and February 2015. Patients were divided into two groups: 28 were in the sinus tarsi approach group and 37 were in the extensile lateral approach group. All patients were asked to return for a research visit that included radiography and clinical evaluation. The postoperative function was evaluated using the ankle and hindfoot score of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and the visual analogue scale (VAS). RESULTS: No significant difference was found in demographics between the two groups. The corrected value of the calcaneal varus angle between the two groups is statistically significant (P < 0.05). The overall wound complication rate was 3.6% in the minimally invasive group versus 13.5% in the extensile group. Four patients in the extensile lateral approach group had developed hindfoot varus deformity at last follow-up. At the last follow-up, the average AOFAS ankle and the hindfoot score of the minimal group was 88.4 ± 6.6, and the VAS score was 1.9 ± 0.7, while that of the extensile lateral approach group was 83.2 ± 5.6 and 2.3 ± 1.0, respectively. CONCLUSION: Limited open reduction via the sinus tarsi approach for intra-articular calcaneal fractures could reduce the incidence of wound complications effectively, and the medial distraction technique is helpful for correcting the calcaneus varus deformity.

Little is known about polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and planting affect biogeochemical processes, and their impact on microbial nitrogen (N) transformation in soil. A 12-month microcosm experiment was conducted to understand the effects of a mixture of PBDEs at two contamination levels, 2 and 20 mg kg(-1)dry weight representing low and high soil contamination, respectively, using two mangrove plant species, namely Kandelia obovata (Ko) and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (Bg), on nitrification, denitrification and anammox in mangrove soils. No significant changes in these N transformation processes were found at month 3 and at a low level of PBDEs in both plant species, suggesting that short-term exposure to 2 mg kg(-1) contamination did not affect microbial N transformation. At month 12, a high level of PBDE contamination significantly decreased the nitrification potential activity and the copy numbers of archaeal amoA and bacterial amoA gene in Ko soil, but such inhibitory effect was not significant in Bg soil. On the contrary, the denitrification-related parameters, including the activities of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase, potential denitrification activity and copy numbers of nirK, nirS and nosZ gene, were stimulated by a high level of PBDE contamination in both Ko and Bg soils, and the stimulation was higher in the more anaerobic Bg soil. Different from denitrification, a high level of PBDE contamination decreased the copy numbers of anammox bacterial 16S rRNA gene in Bg soil but not in Ko soil; this was possibly related to the lower nitrate concentration in Bg soil that might inhibit the growth of anammox bacteria. These results indicated that the effects of PBDEs on microbial N transformation were plant species-specific, with the nitrifying microorganisms in Ko soil more susceptible to PBDE contamination, while denitrification and anammox in Bg soil were more sensitive.

Effects of nitrogen (N) addition on the microbial degradation and uptake of a mixture of BDE-47 and -209 by Aegiceras corniculatum, a typical mangrove plant species were investigated. At the end of 3-month experiment, a significant dissipation of BDE-47 was observed in the planted soil, and this dissipation, particularly in rhizosphere soil, was significantly accelerated by the frequent addition of N in the form of ammonium chloride. The removal percentage of BDE-47 in the rhizosphere soil without N addition was 47.3% and increased to 58.2% with N. However, the unplanted soil only removed less than 25% BDE-47, irrespective to N supply. The N addition in planted treatments significantly increased soil N content, urease and dehydrogenase activities, and the abundances of total bacteria and dehalogenating bacteria, leading to more microbial degradation of BDE-47. The N addition also enhanced the root uptake and translocation of PBDEs to above-ground tissues of A. corniculatum. These results suggested that N addition could enhance the phytoremediation of BDE-47-contaminated soil within a short period of time. Different from BDE-47, BDE-209 in all contaminated soils was difficult to be removed due to its persistence and low bioavailability.

Tannins from the leaves of a medicinal mangrove plant, Ceriops tagal, were purified and fractionated on Sephadex LH-20 columns. 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR), reversed/normal high performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI MS) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDT-TOF MS) analysis showed that the tannins were predominantly B-type procyanidins with minor A-type linkages, galloyl and glucosyl substitutions, and a degree of polymerization (DP) up to 33. Thirteen subfractions of the procyanidins were successfully obtained by a modified fractionation method, and their antioxidant activities were investigated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging capacity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method. All these subfractions exhibited potent antioxidant activities, and eleven of them showed significantly different mean DP (mDP) ranging from 1.43±0.04 to 31.77±1.15. Regression analysis demonstrated that antioxidant activities were positively correlative with mDP when around mDP <10, while dropped and then remained at a level similar to mDP = 5 with around 95 µg ml(-1) for DPPH scavenging activity and 4 mmol AAE g(-1) for FRAP value.

The structures of the condensed tannins isolated from leaf, fruit, and stem bark of Delonix regia (Bojer ex Hook.) Raf. have been investigated with (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance ((13)C NMR) and high performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS) coupled with thiolysis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analyses. The results showed that these condensed tannins from D. regia possessed structural heterogeneity in monomer units and degree of polymerization. Propelargonidin (PP) and procyanidin (PC) were found in the leaf, fruit, and stem bark of D. regia, while prodelphinidin (PD) was found only in the leaves. The polymer chain lengths of condensed tannins from leaf and fruit organs were detected to be trimers to hexadecamers but from trimers to tridecamers for stem bark. B-type linkages were present in all these compounds. Condensed tannins from different parts of D. regia can be explored as tyrosinase inhibitors and food antioxidants because of their potent antityrosinase and antioxidant activities. The inhibitor concentration leading to 50% enzyme activity (IC(50)) was estimated to be 38 ± 1, 73 ± 2, and 54 ± 1.5 µg/mL for the condensed tannins of leaf, fruit, and stem bark. Condensed tannins extracted from stem bark exhibited the highest antioxidant activity; the DPPH scavenging activity (IC(50)) and the FRAP values were 90 ± 2 µg/mL and 5.42 ± 0.09 mmol AAE/g, respectively.

One new dimeric diterpenoid, 8(14)-enyl-pimar-2'(3')-en-4'(18')-en-15'(16')-endolabr- 16,15,2',3'-oxoan-16-one (1) and five known terpenoids: Tagalsin C (2), Tagalsin I (3), lup-20(29)-ene-3ß,28-diol (4), 3-oxolup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (5) and 28-hydroxylup- 20(29)-en-3-one (6) were isolated from the roots of the mangrove plant Ceriops tagal. Their structures and relative stereochemistry were elucidated by means of extensive NMR, IR and MS analysis. The antifouling activity against larval settlement of the barnacle Balanus albicostatus were evaluated using capsaicin as a positive control. All these terpenoids exhibited antifouling activity against cyprid larvae of the barnacle without significant toxicity. The structure-activity relationship results demonstrated that the order of antifouling activity was diterpenoid (Compound 2) > triterpenoid (Compounds 4, 5 and 6) > dimeric diterpenoid (Compounds 1 and 3). The functional groups on the C-28 position of lupane triterpenoid significantly affect the antifouling activity. The diterpenoid dimmer with two identical diterpenoid subunits might display more potent antifouling activity than one with two different diterpenoid subunits. The stability test showed that Compounds 2, 4, 5 and 6 remained stable over 2-month exposure under filtered seawater.

The polymeric procyanidins extracted from Acacia confusa stem bark were fractionated with a step gradient of water, methanol and acetone on a Sephadex LH-20 column. The antioxidant activity of the collected fractions was investigated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. All fractions possessed potent antioxidant activity with the highest activity observed for fraction F9. The matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) analyses suggested that the collected fractions consisted primarily of oligomeric and polymeric procyanidins, with different polymer ranges and most abundant polymer size. For each fraction, catechin and epicatechin were present as both terminal and extension units, and epicatechin was the major component in the extended chain. The mean degree of polymerization (mDP) of each fraction differed, ranging from 1.68 (fraction F2) to 17.31 (fraction F11). There was a relationship between antioxidant activity (IC50/DPPH and FRAP) and mDP (R(2) (DPPH) = 0.861, P = 0.006 and R(2) (FRAP) = 0.608, P = 0.038), respectively. However, the highest antioxidant activity of fraction (F9) was not coincident with the maximum mDP of fraction (F11).

RESUMEN

The antioxidant activities of 70% acetone extract (70% AE) from the hypocotyls of the mangrove plant Kandelia candel and its fractions of petroleum ether (PF), ethyl acetate (EF), water (WF), and the LF (WF fraction further purified through a Sephadex LH-20 column), were investigated by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The results showed that all the extract and fractions possessed potent antioxidant activity. There was a significant linear correlation between the total phenolics concentration and the ferric reducing power or free radical scavenging activity of the extract and fractions. Among the extract and fractions, the LF fraction exhibits the best antioxidant performance. The MALDT-TOF MS and HPLC analyses revealed that the phenolic compounds associated with the antioxidant activity of the LF fraction contains a large number of procyanidins and a small amount of prodelphinidins, and the epicatechin is the main extension unit.

Structures of condensed tannins from the stem bark and fine root of Casuarina equisetifolia were identified using MALDI-TOF MS and HPLC analyses. The condensed tannins from stem bark and fine root consist predominantly of procyanidin combined with prodelphinidin and propelargonidin, and epicatechin is the main extension unit. The condensed tannins had different polymer chain lengths, varying from trimers to tridecamer for stem bark and to pentadecamer for fine root. The antioxidant activities were measured by two models: 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing/ antioxidant power (FRAP). The condensed tannins extracted from C. equisetifolia showed very good DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing/ antioxidant power, suggesting that these extracts may be considered as new sources of natural antioxidants for food and nutraceutical products.

The structures of the condensed tannins from leaf, stem bark and root bark of Acacia confusa were characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis, and their antioxidant activities were measured using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The structures of condensed tannins isolated from two mangrove species, Kandelia candel and Rhizophora mangle, were characterized by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analyses. Results demonstrate that large heterogeneity occurs in degree of polymerization, pattern of hydroxylation, and substitution with monosaccharides in the structures of the condensed tannins. Condensed tannin oligomers from K. candel and R. mangle were shown to be heterogeneous mixtures consisting of procyanidin and prodelphinidin structural units with the former dominating. The MALDI-TOF mass spectra contained masses corresponding to a distinct oligomeric series of glycosylated heteropoly flavan units. In addition, condensed tannins from two mangrove plants were screened for their potential antioxidant activities using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) model systems.

Seasonal dynamics of total phenolics (TP), extractable condensed tannins (ECT), protein-bound condensed tannins (PBCT), fiber-bound condensed tannins (FBCT), total condensed tannins (TCT), and protein precipitation capacity (PPC) in young, mature and senescent branchlets of Casuarina equisetifolia were studied at Chishan Forestry Center of Dongshan County, Fujian Province, China. In addition, nitrogen contents of branchlets at the different developmental stages were also determined. The contents of TP and ECT, and PPC in young branchlets were significantly higher than those in mature and senescent branchlets through the season. However, PBCT contents were significantly higher in senescent branchlets than those in young and mature branchlets; FBCT fluctuated with season. Young branchlets had the highest N content, which decreased during branch maturity and senescence. The highest contents of TP and the lowest contents of TCT and N in young and mature branchlets were observed in summer. There was a significant negative correlation between TP and N contents. In contrast, TCT contents were positively correlated to N contents. Nutrient resorption during senescence and high TCT:N ratios in senescent branchlets are the important nutrient conservation strategies for C. equisetifolia.
