RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Continuing therapy for aggressive non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after first-line treatment (FLT) is challenging. The clinical efficacy of second-line chemotherapy (SLCT) for progressive NSCLC is limited. In this meta-analysis, we aim to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the combination of I-125 seeds brachytherapy (ISB) and SLCT in progressive NSCLC after FLT. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP databases were screened for relevant publications until September 2021. Meta-analyses are conducted by RevMan 5.3 and Stata 12.0. RESULTS: Our meta-analysis encompassed 6 studies (4 retrospective studies and 2 randomized controlled trials), which included 272 patients that underwent ISB with SLCT (combined group) and 257 patients that received SLCT alone (chemotherapy alone group). The complete response (24.7% vs. 7.0%, P < 0.00001), treatment response (65.7% vs. 38.1%, P = 0.0002), and disease control (95.2% vs. 80.4%, P < 0.00001) rates are markedly elevated for patients receiving combined therapy versus those receiving chemotherapy alone. Moreover, pooled progression-free survival (P = 0.0001) and overall survival (P < 0.00001) were remarkably extended for patients that received the combination therapy, while no obvious differences were detected in the pooled myelosuppression (39.0% vs. 30.6%, P = 0.05) and gastrointestinal response (38.5% vs. 35.9%, P = 0.52) rates between 2 groups. Significant heterogeneity was found in the endpoints of the treatment response and progression-free survival. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis demonstrated that ISB could enhance the clinical efficacy of SLCT in patients with progressive NSCLC after FLT without inducing major toxic side effects.

A silk fibroin silicon-based composite aerogel (SSA) has been modified via a SuFEx reaction for application in the adsorption of anionic pollutants and antimicrobials in water. The tyrosine fragment in the silk fibroin was modified by a high yielding SuFEx click reaction. A quaternary ammonium salt functionality was introduced into the silk fibroin protein and the modified silk fibroin protein was crosslinked with tetraethyl orthosilicate. The aerogel was then prepared by freeze-drying. The aerogel obtained has biocompatibility and biodegradability properties. Four types of dyes (Methyl orange, Rhodamine B, Methylene blue and Acid red) were applied as targets and the saturated adsorption amounts were calculated. The adsorption behavior of the dyes towards SSA was studied by fitting Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. A pseudo-first order kinetic model and a pseudo-second order kinetic model were used to study the kinetics of the adsorption process. After 6 cycles, the removal rate of methyl orange by SSA remained at 81.25%. The adsorption capacity and anti-interference ability of SSA on some other polluting anions such as PO43- and CrO42- were also measured and the efficiency adsorption reached up to 70.94% and 77.91%, respectively. The antibacterial effect of SSA was evaluated with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as representative examples.

RESUMEN

Periodic corrugated metal structure is designed to support and propagate spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) wave in the microwave frequencies. In this paper, firstly a plasmonic waveguide consisting of oval-ring shaped cells is proposed with the performance of high transmission efficiency in a wide frequency range. The coplanar waveguides (CPWs) with 50 Ω impedance are adopted to feed the energies or extract signals at both ends of the plasmonic waveguide. Then a well-isolated power divider is constructed based on the SSPPs waveguides aiming to equally split the energy of the SSPPs wave into two equal parts. The stepped-impedances are co-designed with the three input/output ports of the power divider to achieve the impedance-matching between the SSPPs waveguides and the coplanar waveguides. Besides, a single resistor is placed in the middle of two symmetrical half oval-rings to realize the isolation between the two output ports over the spectrum of 4.5-7.5 GHz. Finally, both plasmonic waveguide and the power divider are fabricated and tested to verify the predicted characteristics.

PURPOSE: To evaluate a nurse-led management model of adolescent acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients and improve their psychological care and quality of life. METHODS: Seventy-three adolescent ALL patients participated in an open, controlled clinical trial and were randomized into a nurse-led management model group (n=36) and a doctor-led management model group (n=37). Two assessment questionnaires were administered to assess and compare the 2 models during a 1.5-year follow-up period: the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) questionnaire was administered at 6 different time points, and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (QLQ-C30) at 3 different time points. RESULTS: There were no differences in anxiety and depression between the groups according to the first-administered questionnaire (the mean anxiety and depression scores of the nurse-led group were 14.2±4.1 and 10.8±2.7, respectively; those of the doctor-led group were 13.8±3.8 and 10.6±2.2, respectively). However, repeated measures analysis of variance detected differences in subsequent HADS-based scores as a function of time between the 2 groups (p<0.05). Moreover, the Holm-Sidak's multiple comparisons tests showed that patients of the nurse-led group had significantly decreased mean anxiety scores compared to those in the doctor-led group at the third and subsequent sessions, as well as in mean depression scores from the second session onwards (all p<0.05). According to the last-administered EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire, there were statistical differences in cognitive, emotional, social, and quality of life scales between the 2 groups (all p<0.05), but not in role and physical scales (all p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to offer unique cognitive, psychological, and behavioral management models to adolescent ALL patients that are tailored toward their age group. Strengthening such management is more conducive to alleviating or even reversing psychological problems, and to improving patients' quality of life while ensuring complication-free follow-up periods.
