RESUMEN

Active electric-driven droplet manipulation in digital microfluidics constitutes a promising domain owing to the unique and programmable wettability inherent in sessile ionic droplets. The coupling between the electric field and flow field enables precise control over wetting characteristics and droplet morphology. This study delves into the deformation phenomena of ionic sessile ferrofluid droplets in ambient air induced by uniform electric fields. Under the assumption of a pinned mode throughout the process, the deformation is characterized by variations in droplet height and contact angle in response to the applied electric field intensity. A numerical model is formulated to simulate the deformation dynamics of ferrofluid droplets, employing the phase field method for tracking droplet deformation. The fidelity of the numerical outcomes is assessed through the validation process, involving a comparison of droplet geometric deformations with corresponding experimental results. The impact of the electric field on the deformation of dielectric droplets is modulated by parameters such as electric field strength and droplet size. Through meticulously designed experiments, the substantial influence of both field strength and droplet size is empirically verified, elucidating the behavior of ionic sessile droplets. Considering the interplay of electric force, viscous force, and interfacial tension, the heightened field intensity is observed to effectively reduce the contact angle, augment droplet height, and intensify internal droplet flow. Under varying electric field conditions, droplets assume diverse shapes, presenting a versatile approach for microfluidic operations. The outcomes of this research hold significant guiding implications for microfluidic manipulation, droplet handling, and sensing applications.

RESUMEN

Active magnetic regulation is an emerging subject due to the special and programmable wettability of the sessile ferrofluid droplet. The interaction between liquid and externally applied magnetic field gives rise to controllable spreading and thus evaporation. This work reports the experimental and numerical results of the natural evaporation of a ferrofluid droplet under the effect of a nonuniform magnetic field. The evaporation process of droplets is described into two stages in terms of the geometric distortion and the appearance of the deposition pattern. The presence of the magnetic field leads to a transition of droplet drying from the disk shape with a ring to multiple peaks. A numerical model is established to simulate the evaporation process of ferrofluid droplets with the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method for tracking droplet deformation. The increasing magnetic flux could effectively enlarge the contact radius and enhance the internal flow of the ferrofluid droplet, thus promoting the evaporation process. The numerical results are verified by comparing the droplet geometry deformation with the experimental results. In both the numerical and experimental investigations, the externally applied magnetic field shortens the process of ferrofluid droplet evaporation. The design and optimization of the magnetic field play an important role in regulating ferrofluid droplet evaporation, which in turn facilitates technological advances in industries such as evaporative cooling and inkjet printing.

RESUMEN

The magnetic manipulation of droplets is one of the emerging magnetofluidic technologies that integrate multiple disciplines, such as electromagnetics, fluid mechanics and so on. The directly driven droplets are mainly composed of ferrofluid or liquid metal. This kind of magnetically induced droplet manipulation provides a remote, wireless and programmable approach beneficial for research and engineering applications, such as drug synthesis, biochemistry, sample preparation in life sciences, biomedicine, tissue engineering, etc. Based on the significant growth in the study of magneto droplet handling achieved over the past decades, further and more profound explorations in this field gained impetus, raising concentrations on the construction of a comprehensive working mechanism and the commercialization of this technology. Current challenges faced are not limited to the design and fabrication of the magnetic field, the material, the acquisition of precise and stable droplet performance, other constraints in processing speed and so on. The rotational devices or systems could give rise to additional issues on bulky appearance, high cost, low reliability, etc. Various magnetically introduced droplet behaviors, such as deformation, displacement, rotation, levitation, splitting and fusion, are mainly introduced in this work, involving the basic theory, functions and working principles.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Risk stratification for patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) may help clinicians choose appropriate treatments and improve the quality of care. METHODS: A total of 695 patients hospitalized with AECOPD from January 2015 to December 2017 were considered. They were assigned to a death and a survival cohort. The independent prognostic factors were determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Meanwhile, we also compared the new scale with three other scores and tested the new scale internally and externally. RESULTS: A new risk score was created, made up of six independent variables: age, D-dimer, albumin, cardiac troponin I, partial pressure of carbon dioxide and oxygenation index. The area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUROC) for the model was 0.929, and the other three CURB-65, DECAF and BAP-65 models were 0.718, 0.922 and 0.708. The Cohen's kappa coefficient between the new scale and DECAF was calculated to be 0.648, suggesting that there is a substantial consistency between the two. In the internal and external validation cohorts, 490 and 500 patients were recruited with a total mortality rate of 5.15%. The AUROC for in-hospital mortality was 0.937 in the internal cohort and 0.914 in external cohort, which was significantly better than the scores for CURB-65 and BAP-65, but it was not significantly different from the DECAF. CONCLUSIONS: The new scale may help to stratify the risk of in-hospital mortality of AECOPD. The DECAF performed as well as the new instrument, and it appears to be valid in Chinese patients.

RESUMEN

Micro-structure patterned substrates attract our attention due to the special and programmable wettabilities. The interaction between the liquid and micro/nano structures gives rise to controllable spreading and thus evaporation. For exploration of the application versatility, the introduction of nanoparticles in liquid droplet results in interaction among particles, liquid and microstructures. In addition, temperature of the substrates strongly affects the spreading of the contact line and the evaporative property. The evaporation of sessile droplets of nanofluids on a micro-grooved solid surface is investigated in terms of liquid and surface properties. The patterned nickel surface used in the experiments is designed and fabricated with circular and rectangular shaped pillars whose size ratios between interval and pillars is fixed at 5. The behavior is firstly compared between nanofluid and pure liquid on substrates at room temperature. For pure water droplet, the drying time is relatively longer due to the receding of contact line which slows down the liquid evaporation. Higher concentrations of nanoparticles tend to increase the total evaporation time. With varying concentrations of graphite at nano scale from 0.02% to 0.18% with an interval at 0.04% in water droplets and the heating temperature from 22 to 85°C, the wetting and evaporation of the sessile droplets are systematically studied with discussion on the impact parameters and the resulted liquid dynamics as well as the stain. The interaction among the phases together with the heating strongly affects the internal circulation inside the droplet, the evaporative rate and the pattern of particles deposition.

RESUMEN

A significant growth of research on adaptive liquid lens is achieved over the past decades, and the field is still attracting increasing attentions, focusing on the transition from the current stage to the commercialized stage. The challenges faced are not limited to fabrication, material, small tuning range in focal lengths, additional control systems, limitations in special actuation methods and so on. In addition, the use of external driving parts or systems induce extra problem on bulky appearance, high cost, low reliability etc. Therefore, adaptive liquid lens will be an interesting research focus in both microfluidics and optofluidics science. This review attempts to summarize and focus on the droplet profile deformation under different driving mechanisms in tunable liquid microlens as well as the application in cameras, cell phone and so on. The driving techniques are generally categorized in terms of mechanisms and driving sources.

RESUMEN

Fibulin-3, an extracellular glycoprotein, has been suggested as having functions in vessels. In hypertension, extracellular matrix, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) play important roles in cardiovascular remodeling. However, the role of Fibulin-3 as an extracellular glycoprotein in hypertensive vascular remodeling remains unclear. Our study was to determine whether Fibulin-3 and TIMPs/MMPs would affect vascular structure during hypertension and the treatment of Xuezhikang. Thirty spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) aged 8 weeks were randomized to three groups: SHRs control group (SHRs group, n=10), group treated with low dose Xuezhikang (XZK-L, 20 mg/kg/d, n=10) and group treated with high dose Xuezhikang (XZK-H, 200 mg/kg/d, n=10), the normal group was comprised of ten Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats of the same age. We showed that serum nitric oxide (NO) in control group was significantly lower than WKY group (P<0.05). Concomitantly, serum oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) was higher than WKY group (P<0.05). The treatment of high dose Xuezhikang significantly dicreased ox-LDL, left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and Wall-to-lumen area ratio (W/L) of thoracic aorta (P<0.05), while serum NO was significantly increasing (P<0.05). Moreover, the expressions of Fibulin-3 and MMP-2, 9 at both protein and mRNA levels were significantly higher in thoracic aorta of SHRs group compared to WKY group by immunohistochemistry and western blotting (P<0.05). However, the levels of Fibulin-3 and MMP-2, 9 were significantly decreased in XZK-H group compared to control group (P<0.05). The level of TIMP-3 had no significance difference between SHRs and WKY groups (P>0.05). So the levels of Fibulin-3 and MMP-2, 9 in SHRs could be inhibited by Xuezhikang. Furthermore, a strong correlation in transcript expression was established between Fibulin-3, and MMP-2 (r=0.81, P<0.05) and MMP-9 (r=0.92, P<0.05) through immunohistochemistry. In summary, the overexpression of Fibulin-3 and MMP-2, 9 levels were associated with hypertension and vascular remodeling and inhibited by Xuezhikang. Fibulin-3 is a candidate in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular remodeling in hypertension.

RESUMEN

Magnetic manipulation is a promising technique for lab-on-a-chip platforms. The magnetic approach can avoid problems associated with heat, surface charge, ionic concentration and pH level. The present paper investigates the migration of diamagnetic particles in a ferrofluid core stream that is sandwiched between two diamagnetic streams in a uniform magnetic field. The three-layer flow is expanded in a circular chamber for characterisation based on imaging of magnetic nanoparticles and fluorescent microparticles. A custom-made electromagnet generates a uniform magnetic field across the chamber. In a relatively weak uniform magnetic field, the diamagnetic particles in the ferrofluid move and spread across the chamber. Due to the magnetization gradient formed by the ferrofluid, diamagnetic particles undergo negative magnetophoresis and move towards the diamagnetic streams. The effects of magnetic field strength and the concentration of diamagnetic particles are studied in detail.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether testosterone modulates markers of cardiomyocytes aging via its classic androgen receptor (AR)-dependent pathway or conversion to estradiol. METHODS: Male littermates and testicular feminized (Tfm) mice were randomly separated into 4 experimental groups littermate controls (n=8), Tfm mice (n=7), testosterone-treated Tfm mice (n=8), and Tfm mice treated with testosterone in combination with the aromatase inhibitor anastrazole (n=7). Cardiomyocytes were isolated from mouse left ventricles, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and the amount of malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured using colorimetry method, and expression of p16(INK4α) and retinoblastoma (Rb) proteins were detected by Western blotting. RESULTS: The SOD and GSH-Px enzyme activities of cardiomyocytes were decreased, and the MDA levels and the expression of p16(INK4α) and Rb proteins were increased in Tfm mice compared with control mice. An increase was observed in the activities of SOD and GSH-Px enzyme as well as a decrease in MDA levels and the expression of p16(INK4α) and Rb proteins in the testosterone-treated Tfm mice. After co-treatment with anastrazole in Tfm mice, these improvement were partly inhibited. CONCLUSION: Physiological testosterone replacement can delay cardiomyocyte aging in Tfm mice, an effect that is independent of the AR pathway and in part conversion to estradiol.

RESUMEN

This paper reports the investigation of mixing phenomena caused by the interaction between a uniform magnetic field and a magnetic fluid in a microfluidic chamber. The flow system consists of a water-based ferrofluid and a mixture of DI water and glycerol. Under a uniform magnetic field, the mismatch in magnetization of the fluids leads to instability at the interface and subsequent rapid mixing. The mismatch of magnetization is determined by concentration of magnetic nanoparticles. Full mixing at a relatively low magnetic flux density up to 10 mT can be achieved. The paper discusses the impact of key parameters such as magnetic flux density, flow rate ratio and viscosity ratio on the mixing efficiency. Two main mixing regimes are observed. In the improved diffusive mixing regime under low field strength, magnetic particles of the ferrofluid migrate into the diamagnetic fluid. In the bulk transport regime under high field strength, the fluid system is mixed rapidly by magnetically induced secondary flow in the chamber. The mixing concept potentially provides a wireless solution for a lab-on-a-chip system that is low-cost, robust, free of induced heat and independent of pH level or ion concentration.

RESUMEN

This paper reports experimental and numerical results of the deformation of a ferrofluid droplet on a superhydrophobic surface under the effect of a uniform magnetic field. A water-based ferrofluid droplet surrounded by immiscible mineral oil was stretched by a magnetic field parallel to the substrate surface. The results show that an increasing flux density increases the droplet width and decreases the droplet height. A numerical model was established to study the equilibrium shape of the ferrofluid droplet. The governing equations for physical fields, including the magnetic field, are solved by the finite volume method. The interface between the two immiscible liquids was tracked by the level-set method. Nonlinear magnetization was implemented in the model. Comparison between experimental and numerical results shows that the numerical model can predict well the nonlinear deformation of a ferrofluid droplet in a uniform magnetic field.
