RESUMEN

The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays a central role in regulating stomatal movements under drought conditions. The root-derived peptide CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION-RELATED 25 (CLE25) moves from the root to shoot for activating ABA biosynthesis under drought conditions. However, the root-to-shoot translocation of root-derived ABA and its regulation of stomatal movements in the shoot remain to be clarified. Here, we reveal that the ABA transporter ATP-binding cassette subfamily G member 25 (AtABCG25) mediates root-to-shoot translocation of ABA and ABA-glucosyl ester (ABA-GE) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Isotope-labeled ABA tracer experiments and hormone quantification in xylem sap showed that the root-to-shoot translocation of ABA and ABA-GE was substantially impaired in the atabcg25 mutant under nondrought and drought conditions. However, the contents of ABA and ABA-GE in the leaves were lower in the atabcg25 mutant than in the wild type (WT) under nondrought but similar under drought conditions. Consistently, the stomatal closure was suppressed in the atabcg25 mutant under nondrought but not under drought conditions. The transporter activity assays showed that AtABCG25 directly exported ABA and ABA-GE in planta and in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cells. Thus, we proposed a working model in which root-derived ABA transported by AtABCG25 via xylem mediates stomatal movements in the shoot under nondrought conditions but might exhibit little effect on stomatal movements under drought conditions. These findings extend the functions of AtABCG25 and provide insights into the long-distance translocation of ABA and its role in stomatal movements.

Motivated by the growing attention to climate change and the crucial role businesses could play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this study investigates entrepreneurial energy efficiency orientation in the context of carbon footprint reduction initiatives of small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). We enhance understanding of the climate change action of SMEs by taking into account the mediating mechanisms (i.e., identification of green barriers and green networking) through which firm entrepreneurial energy efficiency orientation leads to superior carbon footprint reduction initiatives by overcoming barriers to green practices. A survey of 252 SME owners and top managers in the Tees Valley region, Northeast England, supported the direct impact of entrepreneurial energy efficiency orientation on overcoming barriers to green practices and the mediating role of identification of green barriers and green networking in this focal relationship. These findings reveal the importance of entrepreneurial energy efficiency orientation, identification of green barriers and green networking in helping SMEs overcome barriers to green practices and improving carbon footprint reduction initiatives.

Cytokinins (CKs), primarily trans-zeatin (tZ) and isopentenyladenine (iP) types, play critical roles in plant growth, development, and various stress responses. Long-distance transport of tZ-type CKs meidated by Arabidopsis ATP-binding cassette transporter subfamily G14 (AtABCG14) has been well studied; however, less is known about the biochemical properties of AtABCG14 and its transporter activity toward iP-type CKs. Here we reveal the biochemical properties of AtABCG14 and provide evidence that it is also required for long-distance transport of iP-type CKs. AtABCG14 formed homodimers in human (Homo sapiens) HEK293T, tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), and Arabidopsis cells. Transporter activity assays of AtABCG14 in Arabidopsis, tobacco, and yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) showed that AtABCG14 may directly transport multiple CKs, including iP- and tZ-type species. AtABCG14 expression was induced by iP in a tZ-type CK-deficient double mutant (cypDM) of CYP735A1 and CYP735A2. The atabcg14 cypDM triple mutant exhibited stronger CK-deficiency phenotypes than cypDM. Hormone profiling, reciprocal grafting, and 2H6-iP isotope tracer experiments showed that root-to-shoot and shoot-to-root long-distance transport of iP-type CKs were suppressed in atabcg14 cypDM and atabcg14. These results suggest that AtABCG14 participates in three steps of the circular long-distance transport of iP-type CKs: xylem loading in the root for shootward transport, phloem unloading in the shoot for shoot distribution, and phloem unloading in the root for root distribution. We found that AtABCG14 displays transporter activity toward multiple CK species and revealed its versatile roles in circular long-distance transport of iP-type CKs. These findings provide new insights into the transport mechanisms of CKs and other plant hormones.

It is important to detect thrombin due to its physiological and pathological roles, where rapid and simple analytical approaches are needed. In this study, an aptasensor based on fluorescence attenuation kinetics for the detection of thrombin is presented, which incorporates the features of stilbene and aptamer. We designed and synthesized an aptasensor by one-step coupling of stilbene compound and aptamer, which employed the adaptive binding of the aptamer with thrombin to cause a change in stilbene fluorescence attenuation kinetics. The sensor realized detection of thrombin by monitoring the variation in apparent fluorescence attenuation rate constant (kapp), which could be further used for probing of enzyme-aptamer binding. In comprehensive studies, the developed aptasensor presented satisfactory performance on repeatability, specificity, and regeneration capacity, which realized rapid sensing (10 s) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.205 µM. The strategy was successful across seven variants of thrombin aptasensors, with tunable kapp depending on the SITS (4-Acetamido-4'-isothiocyanato-2,2'-stilbenedisulfonic acid disodium salt hydrate) grafting site. Analyte detection mode was demonstrated in diluted serum, requiring no separation or washing steps. The new sensing mode for thrombin detection paves a way for high-throughput kinetic-based sensors for exploiting aptamers targeted at clinically relevant proteins.

Annular-shaped femtosecond few-cycle pulses are generated by 40fs laser pulses propagating through 6 solid thin plates in numerical simulations as well as in experiments. The generation of such pulses takes advantage of the conical emission caused by plasma effect, which introduces continuously varying off-axis plasma density along the radial direction of the propagating beam. The negative dispersion induced by the plasma causes the pulse at particular radial location to be self-compressed and to form an annular beam of short pulse, which can be extracted simply by spatial filtering. Meanwhile, by adjusting the input pulse energy and position of each thin plate relative to the laser focus, we control the plasma density in thin plates which changes the ratio between ionization and effects providing positive dispersion, and obtain a higher compression ratio indicating that the scheme of solid thin plates has the flexibility to regulate the laser intensity so as to plasma density, thus the negative dispersion the pulse experiences during propagation. Few-cycle pulses as short as 8.8 fs are generated in experiments, meanwhile the shortest pulse duration found in the simulations is 5.0 fs, which corresponds to two optical cycles at its central wavelength 761 nm. This method has great potential in high-power few-cycle pulse generation.

(E)-α,ß-Unsaturated aldehydes were synthesized by the Julia-Kocienski reaction of 2,2-dimethoxyethyl 1-phenyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl (PT) sulfone 3 with various aldehydes, followed by acid hydrolysis. The reaction could be carried out in one pot, and various (E)-α,ß-unsaturated aldehydes were obtained in a short time and with high yields.

The worldwide, extraordinary outbreak of coronavirus pandemic (i.e., COVID-19) and other emerging viral expansions have drawn particular interest to the design and development of novel antiviral, and viricidal, agents, with a broad-spectrum of antiviral activity. The current indispensable challenge lies in the development of universal virus repudiation systems that are reusable, and capable of inactivating pathogens, thus reducing risk of infection and transmission. In this review, science-based methods, mechanisms, and procedures, which are implemented in obtaining resultant antiviral coated substrates, used in the destruction of the strains of the different viruses, are reviewed. The constituent antiviral members are classified into a few broad groups, such as polymeric materials, metal ions/metal oxides, and functional nanomaterials, based on the type of materials used at the virus contamination sites. The action mode against enveloped viruses was depicted to vindicate the antiviral mechanism. We also disclose hypothesized strategies for development of a universal and reusable virus deactivation system against the emerging COVID-19. In the surge of the current, alarming scenario of SARS-CoV-2 infections, there is a great necessity for developing highly-innovative antiviral agents to work against the viruses. We hypothesize that some of the antiviral coatings discussed here could exert an inhibitive effect on COVID-19, indicated by the results that the coatings succeeded in obtaining against other enveloped viruses. Consequently, the coatings need to be tested and authenticated, to fabricate a wide range of coated antiviral products such as masks, gowns, surgical drapes, textiles, high-touch surfaces, and other personal protective equipment, aimed at extrication from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A growing number of developing countries have experienced worsening air pollution, which has been shown to cause significant health problems. However, few studies have explored the impact of air pollution on the mental health of university students, particularly in the Chinese context. In order to address this gap, through a large-scale cross-sectional survey, this study aims to examine the effects of air pollution on final-year Chinese university undergraduates' (due to graduate in 2020) mental health by employing multivariable logistic regression. Our findings show that, first, although normal air quality is not strongly associated with lower levels of negative mental health, there is a strong link between poor air quality and higher levels of negative mental health. More specifically, life satisfaction hedonic unhappiness and depression measured by the Centre for Epidemiological Studies' Depression scale (CES-D) are statistically associated with air pollution. In addition, we also found that gender is a significant factor, as males had more than 1.6 times greater odds of increased mental health problems compared to their female counterparts. Place of birth also plays a significant role in participants' mental health. Moreover, undergraduates with urban household registration experienced significant levels of hedonic unhappiness and depression on the CES-D scale. Finally, we found that there is an association between respondents' economic situation and their mental health too. Overall, this study contributes to the research on air pollution management and mental health intervention, particularly in relation to student groups. The undergraduate curriculum should provide more guidance and suggestions on promoting mental health and establishing positive attitudes to life and academic study of the final year students, under the context of air pollution in China.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are widely utilized to construct highly sensitive biosensors. However, the PSS phase exhibits insulation, weak acidity, and aqueous instability. In this work, we fabricated PEDOT OECT by alternating current electrodeposition in protic ionic liquids. The steady-state characteristics were demonstrated to be stable in long-term tests. In detail, the maximum transconductance, the on/off current ratio, and the hysteresis were stable at 2.79 mS, 504, and 0.12 V, respectively. Though the transient behavior was also stable, the time constant could reach 218.6 ms. Thus, the trade-off between switching speed and stability needs to be considered in applications that require a rapid response.

DESCRIPTION: Two new ruthenium(II) complexes containing guanidinium as ligands, [Ru(dip)2 (L1)]3+ (Ru1) and [Ru(dip)2(L2)]3+ (Ru2) (dip=4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline; L1=1-(4-(1H-imidazo[4,5- f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)phenyl)guanidine cation; L2 = 1-(3-(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl) phenyl)guanidine cation) have been synthesized and characterized. Both complexes display higher cytotoxicity against several cancer cell lines compared to cisplatin and are less cytotoxic on the nontumorigenic cell line LO2. Intracellular distribution studies show that these complexes are selectively localized in the cytoplasm. FINDINGS: Further analysis revealed that Ru1 and Ru2 had no obvious effects on the cell cycle and induced apoptosis in HeLa cells via the mitochondrial pathway, which involved reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and Bcl-2 family member activation. Taken together, the two complexes have the potential to be utilized as anticancer agents.
