RESUMEN

Osteochondrosis (OC) is a developmental orthopaedic disease of significant concern in numerous sport horse breeds, with significant international relevance. Using digital radiographs, we assessed the occurrence of hock (tarsocrural joint) OC in 3 048 Pura Raza Española (PRE) horses which took part in a morpho-functional test, in three specific locations in the tarsus limbs: the Distal Intermediate Ridge of the Tibia (DIRT), the lateral trochlear ridges of the talus (LTT), and the medial trochlear ridges of the talus (MTT). An incidence rate of 13.3% was found for hock OC in the analysed sample, with the highest incidence rate observed in DIRT (10.0%) and the lowest in MTT (0.2%). Estimates of genetic predisposition to hock OC were carried out using three genetic approaches: 1a) a binomial threshold model based on the presence or absence of OC, 1b) a multinomial threshold model, on a scale from 0 (absence) to 3 (maximum), and 2) a linear model. The effects considered in the models included sex, genetic origin and stud class. All the analyses were based on the Bayesian inference methodology, using the THRGIBBS3F90 software. The binomial threshold model yielded the most suitable results, with an estimated heritability for Overall hock OC of 0.71 ± 0.055 on the underlying scale (0.53 on the observed scale), ranging in different locations from 0.48 ± 0.087 (LTT) to 0.66 ± 0.063 (DIRT) on the underlying scale (0.10 and 0.38 on the observed scale, respectively). The highest significative genetic correlation was observed between Overall and DIRT (0.97) for approach 1a, and the lowest significant genetic correlation was between Overall and LTT (0.49), for approach 2. This study contributes valuable insights into the genetic predisposition towards, as well as for the potential for selective breeding against, hock OC in PRE horses, and provides a basis for future research and breeding programmes aimed at minimising the occurrence of hock OC and promoting the overall health of this breed.

Longevity is an economically important trait, since extending the functional life of a doe would allow us to keep the most productive females in the herd as long as possible, and this could result in the increased profitability of dairy farms. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine the most important factors that influence the length of productive life (LPL) of female Florida goats and to estimate its genetic additive variance using a Cox proportional hazards model. The data consisted of 70,695 productive life records from 25,722 Florida females kidding between 2006 and 2020. A total of 19,495 does had completed their productive life while 6227 (24.2%) does had censored information. The pedigree contained information on 56,901 animals. The average censoring age and average failure age after first kidding for LPL were 36 and 47 months respectively. The model included, as time-independent effects, the age at first kidding and the interaction between herd, year and season of birth of the doe, and as time-dependent effects, the age at kidding, the interaction between herd, year and season of kidding, the within-herd class of milk production deviation, and the interaction between the lactation number and the stage of lactation. All fixed effects had a significant effect on LPL (p < 0.05). Does with older ages at the first kidding and an earlier age at kidding were at higher risk of being culled. A large difference among herds was observed in terms of culling risk, which highlighted the importance of adequate management practices. Also, high-producing does were less likely to be culled. The estimate of the additive genetic variance was 1.844 (in genetic standard deviation), with a heritability estimate of 0.58 ± 0.012. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of a genetic model for genetic evaluation of the length of the productive life of Spanish dairy goat breeds.

The aim of this work was to estimate direct and correlated responses in survival rates in an experiment of selection for ovulation rate (OR) and litter size (LS) in a line of rabbits (OR_LS). From generation 0 to 6 (first selection period), females were selected only for second gestation OR estimated by laparoscopy. From generation 7 to 13 (second selection period), a 2-stage selection for OR and LS was performed. In stage 1, females having the greatest OR at second gestation were selected. In stage 2, selection was for the greatest average LS of the first 2 parities of the females selected in stage 1. Total selection pressure in females was about 30%. The line had approximately 17 males and 75 females per generation. Traits recorded were OR estimated as the number of corpora lutea in both ovaries, number of implanted embryos (IE) estimated as the number of implantation sites, LS estimated as total number of rabbits born recorded at each parity, embryo survival (ES) estimated as IE/OR, fetal survival (FS) estimated as LS/IE, and prenatal survival (PS) estimated as LS/OR. Data were analyzed using Bayesian methodology. The estimated heritabilities of LS, OR, IE, ES, FS, and PS were 0.07, 0.21, 0.10, 0.07, 0.12, and 0.16, respectively. Direct and correlated responses from this study were estimated in each period of selection as the difference between the average genetic values of last and first generation. In the first selection period, OR increased 1.36 ova, but no correlated response was observed in LS due to a decrease on FS. Correlated responses for IE, ES, FS, and PS in the first selection period were 1.11, 0.00, -0.04, and -0.01, respectively. After 7 generations of 2-stage selection for OR and LS, OR increased 1.0 ova and response in LS was 0.9 kits. Correlated responses for IE, ES, FS, and PS in the second selection period were 1.14, 0.02, 0.02, and 0.07, respectively. Two-stage selection for OR and LS can be a promising procedure to improve LS in rabbits.
